Ask anyone to name the greatest team in international football and chances are they'll say Brazil. But can Brazil back it up by winning the 2024 Copa America? A victory this year for Brazil would mark their 10th win in the tournament's history. Paraguay probably aren't the toughest competition in Group D, but they're not the weakest either. It's essentially a must-win game for both Paraguay and Brazil if they want to advance from the group and enter the knockout rounds.

TL;DR: Watch Colombia vs. Costa Rica in the 2024 Copa America for free on Sportitalia. Access this free streaming platform from anywhere in the world with ExpressVPN.

We all love an underdog. That's exactly what Costa Rica will be when they play Colombia in Group D of the 2024 Copa America. A victory here for either team could have significant implications for determining who advances out of the group.

It has been eight years since Costa Rica played at the tournament. Costa Rica aren't part of the South American football confederation, which means they don't always get invited to the tournament. In the five times they've entered, Costa Rica have only reached the quarter finals once. Is 2024 the year they improve on this record?

Colombia will prove very tough competition. They have a strong history at the Copa America and will be looking to repeat their tournament win of 2001.

If you just want to be told today's word, you can jump to the bottom of this article for June 28's Wordle solution revealed. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

What's the best Wordle starting word?

The best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to you. Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 21:00

Connections is the latest New York Times word game that's captured the public's attention. The game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for June 28's Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections?

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Tweet may have been deleted

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Tweet may have been deleted

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Here's a hint for today's Connections categories

Want a hit about the categories without being told the categories? Then give these a try:

  • Yellow: A type of purse

  • Green: I need some space

  • Blue: Give me a hint

  • Purple: Boys underwear

Does the cat die? Your top 'A Quiet Place: Day One' question answered

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 19:00

A Quiet Place: Day One ushers audiences back into the horror franchise, where extraterrestrial monsters who hunt by sound chase down any human who makes a peep. For the first two installments, writer/director/actor John Krasinski centered on rural parents, desperately and determinedly protecting their defenseless children against ravenous extraterrestrial monsters. But in this prequel, new to the franchise helmer/scribe Michael Sarnoski offers a pet parent named Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) and her cuddly cat, Frodo.

As their Lord of the Rings names tease, they are tightly connected as they make their own dangerous quest through a Manhattan terrorized by "Death Angels," who chase any sound like it's a dinner bell. And this has some animal-lovers nervous.

"Does the cat die?" has become a common question since the first trailers revealed Sam's feline sidekick. Sure, the first two movies put the Abbott children — including a newborn — in danger. But that doesn't mean cat people are ready to witness a fleeing feline be gobbled up like so much little brother Beau. (He just wanted to play with a rocket!)

So, for those of you that absolutely need to know before you go, we'll answer the biggest question about this new horror offering:

Does Frodo the cat survive A Quiet Place: Day One?  Eric, Sam, and Frodo dodge monsters in "A Quiet Place: Day One." Credit: Paramount Pictures

Deep breaths, animal lovers: Frodo the cat lives — as do the native rodents scurrying around Manhattan. It seems the Death Angels aren't much for snacking. Or perhaps they're targeting humans not for nourishment so much as taking down the dominant species for swift conquering? But that's a topic for another time. For now, rest easy-ish knowing that for all those who will fall prey to A Quiet Place: Day One's Death Angels, sweet, fluffy Frodo will keep her nine lives intact.

A Quiet Place: Day One is now playing in theaters.

What you need to know about Adobe Lightroom's new AI feature

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 18:48

Adobe has rolled out a new addition to its Lightroom photo editing platform called Generative Remove. It leverages Firefly, Adobe's generative AI model, to enable novice and hobbyist photo editors alike to select and erase elements from pictures, where the replacement content seamlessly fits in with its surroundings.

With the recent arrival of Generative Remove, three major reasons emerge that make Lightroom a powerful photo editing suite for non-pros:

Easy clean-up

With Generative Remove, Lightroom users can simply mouse or swipe over objects, people — whatever is interfering with their otherwise well-composed photo, and the tool will automatically recognize the thing that doesn’t belong and wipe it from the image. You don’t need to define the element by outlining it. Generative Remove just knows what you’re pointing out and how to get rid of it.

Plus, the AI engine can generate ultra-realistic backgrounds or mimic complex patterns like paisley based on a photo’s visual information.

Studio-level lens effects

Lightroom comes with Lens Blur, a tool for adding professional-grade lens effects to your photos in post-production. With this feature, you can achieve the soft focus and macro-lens look and feel associated with studio shooting with the output of any camera or smartphone.

There are also seven presets to choose from, giving novices an easy way to apply these dreamy effects to their photos.

Mobile-friendly workflow Credit: Adobe

Adobe knows that so much of today's photography is captured and viewed by smartphones. The company has built out a truly mobile-optimized UI for its Lightroom app so that creators can manage their photo production from start to finish, all in the mobile app. This includes Generative Remove.

If you're ready to try your hand at the latest AI-enhanced Lightroom, Adobe is offering a seven-day free trial. Get started here.

Reddit is cracking down on AI bots

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 15:55

In May, Reddit announced it would allow OpenAI to train its models on Reddit content for a price. Now, according to The Verge, Reddit will block most automated bots from accessing, learning from, and profiting from its data without a similar licensing agreement.

Reddit plans to do this by updating its robots.txt file, the "basic social contract of the web" that determines how web crawlers can access the site. Most nascent AI companies (including, at one point, OpenAI) train their models on content they've scraped from across the web without considering copyright or the Terms of Service of individual sites.

SEE ALSO: Reddit's traffic is way up – but why? It's Google.

Per The Verge's Alex Heath, search engines like Google got away with this form of scraping thanks to the "give-and-take" of Google sending traffic back to individual sites in exchange for the ability to crawl them for information. Now, AI companies are tipping the balance by taking that same information and providing it to users without sending them back to the sites the information came from.

Reddit's chief legal officer, Ben Lee, told The Verge that the parameters of robots.txt are not legally enforceable but that publicizing Reddit's intention to enforce its content policy is "a signal to those who don’t have an agreement with us that they shouldn’t be accessing Reddit data."

In a blog post about the change, Reddit noted that "good faith actors – like researchers and organizations... will continue to have access to Reddit content for non-commercial use." These include the Internet Archive, home to the Wayback Machine.

TikTok's Instagram competitor that no one's heard of is flopping

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 14:48

Instagram wants to be TikTok with Reels, and now TikTok wants to be Instagram with Whee.

Like Instagram, Whee allows users to post and edit photos and message other users. It launched earlier this month in some countries to little fanfare. According to TechCrunch, as of Tuesday, the app was only downloaded on 13,000 iOS devices and a little over 10,000 times on Android devices. It has yet to breach the Top Free Apps chart in Apple's App Store or become one of the Top 500 Social apps in the countries it's available in.

SEE ALSO: Here's how the TikTok ban will likely play out in the courts

The app has yet to launch in the U.S. So far, it's most popular in Malaysia, where it's been downloaded 2,400 times. TechCrunch also found that ByteDance, TikTok and Whee's parent company, has yet to advertise the app via Apple's Search Ads, which boosts apps' ranking in the App Store's search. ByteDance's strategy remains unclear.

Whee's launch is reminiscent of one of ByteDance's other ventures, Lemon8, a Pinterest-esque photo-sharing platform that got off to a slow start but now boasts millions of downloads.

The public first heard of TikTok's potential Instagram dupe, which was initially known as TikTok Photos, back in March.

Lemon8 launched in the middle of TikTok's battle against the potential ban in the U.S., and now that the ban is written into law, ByteDance pushed Whee forward. But the ban will likely take all ByteDance apps down with TikTok.

Hawk Tuah girl's merch is already raking in lots of cash

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 14:17

If Hawk Tuah Girl was hesitant about her sudden overnight fame, maybe things are starting to shift now that the cash is rolling in. The viral star, real name Hailey Welch, has reportedly begun making good money via merchandise.

Rolling Stone contacted Fathead Threads, a local Tennessee apparel brand working with Welch to sell shirts and hats. Jason Poteete from Fathead told Rolling Stone that they'd sold about 2,000 hats already, which, via back-of-the-napkin math, equates to roughly $65,000 in revenue. Welch reportedly gets an undisclosed percentage of sales, but it stands to reason she's made a decent chunk of change from the merch.

Tweet may have been deleted

In case you missed the mega-viral video, Hawk Tuah Girl first surfaced in a Tim & Dee TV video where she was asked to give a "move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time?"

She, quite funnily, answered: "Aw, you gotta give 'em that 'hawk tuah' and spit on that thang! You get me?" That has since become a big-time meme and clip over TikTok, X, and just about any other social media platform.

SEE ALSO: Who is the 'Hawk Tuah' girl, and what does it mean?

However, going viral does not always guarantee making money from it. With that in mind, Poteete wanted to assist Welch — who has not done any interviews in the wake of the viral clip — in monetizing her moment.

"Of course, she hasn't gotten a dime from the first viral video that went out," Poteete told Rolling Stone, while nothing he's known Welch for years. "Nobody was asking permission for her to do nothing, neither. I just wanted her to get some profit off of this deal."

Here's hoping Welch can squeeze every cent out of the video. Page Six reported that major talent agencies were in talks with Welch, which hopefully means more cash for the viral star.

Massive authentication vulnerability risks compromising much of the internet

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 13:43

Another day, another newly discovered exploit. But this vulnerability has the potential to be a really big problem.

This week, Progress Software announced that it had discovered two new items for the common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVE) list of the enterprise product MOVEit Transfer, a popular way for businesses to securely transfer and exchange sensitive files and data.

SEE ALSO: Two MIT students charged for exploiting Ethereum blockchain bug, stole $25 million in crypto

This most recent MOVEit vulnerability, known as CVE-2024-5806, allows hackers to bypass authentication protocols and access the potentially sensitive information being transferred.

While many readers may not be familiar with Progress Software or MOVEit, this vulnerability could result in serious consequences. As Ars Technica points out, a MOVEit vulnerability affected millions of people last year. Thousands of organizations, including the US Department of Energy and Shell, were compromised. The 2023 exploit's effects on the Canadian province of Ontario’s government birth registry alone left 3.4 million people compromised.

Currently, MOVEit is installed on as many as 2,700 networks globally. Bad actors, such as at least one ransomware gang, have already made attempts to exploit this most recent vulnerability, according to cybersecurity researchers with The Shadowserver Foundation and the security firm Censys.

Progress Software has since released a patch to close the exploit, which can be found here.

It's also glare-free, so reading in the sun won't be an issue. Amazon also mentions the Scribe gets the longest battery life out of any Kindle, getting weeks of use on a single charge. Plus, the pen doesn't require a battery so you'll never need to set it down to re-charge.

In Mashable's review of every Kindle device, the team rated the Scribe as the best model for those who like to take notes. "If you haven't been able to get on board with e-readers because you like to jot down notes in the margins of your books, the Amazon Kindle Scribe just might convert you," says the review.

If you love reading and taking notes, today's deal on the Kindle Scribe could be a great investment when it comes to the enjoyment category of life. Rabbit R1 has a major security flaw in its code

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 11:50

"All [Rabbit] R1 responses ever given can be downloaded," according to an R1 research group called Rabbitude.

Rabbit and its R1 AI device has already been dunked on for being nothing more than an Android app wrapped up in a hardware gadget, but something much more alarming is afoot.

SEE ALSO: I tested Rabbit R1 vs. Meta AI: The winning AI assistant will surprise you

The report (via The Verge) said Rabbitude gained access to the codebase and discovered API keys were hardwired into its code. That means anyone with these keys could "read every response every r1 has ever given, including ones containing personal information, brick all r1s, alter the responses of all r1s [and] replace every r1’s voice." The investigation discovered that these API keys are what provided access to ElevenLabs and Azure for text-to-speech generation, Yelp for reviews, and Google Maps for location data.

What's worse, Rabbitude said it identified the security flaw on May 16 and that Rabbit was aware of the issue. But "the API keys continue to be valid as of writing," on June 25. Continued access to the API keys means bad actors could potentially access sensitive data, crash the entire rabbitOS system, and add custom text.

The following day (June 26) Rabbit issued a statement on its Discord server saying that the four API keys Rabbitude identified have been revoked. "As of right now, we are not aware of any customer data being leaked or any compromise to our systems," said the company.

But the plot thickens. Rabbitude also found a fifth API key that was hardwired in the code, but not publicly disclosed in its investigation. This one is called sendgrid, which provides access to all emails to the r1.rabbit.tech subdomain. At the time Rabbitude published its follow-up report, the sendgrid API key was still active. Access to this API key meant Rabbitude could access additional user information within the R1's spreadsheet functions and even send emails from rabbit.tech email addresses.

If you were already skeptical of the R1's half-baked capabilities that Mashable Tech Editor Kimberly Gedeon blamed on "rushed innovation, disillusionment, and impetuousness" in her review, this might be your sign that Rabbit is at best, not worth the money, and at worst, incapable of keeping your data private.

Just in time for Prime Day, Target's Circle Week is back July 7 through 13

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 11:43

Prime Day 2024 finally released its July dates, and with them come an avalanche of competing sales. Target is among the rival retailers to launch their summer sales with the return of Circle Week, coming July 7 through 13. While other retailers require a paid membership to shop the deals, Target's Circle membership is free and gains you full access to all the deals. Target claims this is their "biggest sale of the season", so we're locked in to see if that's actually true, especially when it's competing against the behemoth of Amazon.

Ahead of the sale, Target has released some sneak peak deals. The focus of Circle Week is deals for the whole family with markdowns on toys, kitchen, home, and food and beverage. Here's what we know so far.

When is Target Circle Week?

Target Circle Week kicks off July 7 at 2 a.m. CT and runs through July 13 on Target.com. While most of the deals will arrive on July 7, Target is bringing back deals of the day — some of which you can shop in-person, including a Starbucks Buy a Beverage, Get One 50% off.

If you like to compare prices like us, these deals fall inconveniently right before Prime Day, which runs July 16th and 17th.

Can you shop Target Circle Week without being a Target Circle member?

As the name implies, Circle Week is for Circle members. The good news? Unlike Prime or Walmart+ membership, Circle Membership is totally free. It's more of a rewards program than a paid service, however, members get to enjoy daily Circle deals and cash back bonuses. So if you're not a member of any retailers membership program, Target Circle is the one to join — it quite literally costs nothing.

In addition to the base membership program, Target also offers Target Circle 360, a paid membership program that gets your orders to you faster. 360 members enjoy unlimited same day delivery and free two-day shipping, similar to the delivery benefits of Amazon Prime.

Best deal to shop during Target Circle week?

Prime Day deals span every category, and we expect to see the same during Target Circle Week. However, according to the company's press release, there will be a focus on toys, kitchen, and back-to-school items.

Plus, there are opportunities to spend and save. When Circle members spend $50 on home care products, they'll receive a $15 Target gift card, and when they spend $40 on select products from Ulta Beauty at Target, they'll receive a $10 gift card.

Additionally, expect to see 50% off toys and up to 40% on kitchen and floor care tools. While the deals aren't officially coming until July 7, here are the deals you can start shopping now.

Valve launched a native game recorder app for Steam Deck

Mashable - Thu, 06/27/2024 - 11:25

It's kind of a dire time for social clip sharing features on game consoles, but the Steam Deck soldiers on.

Valve revealed on Wednesday that Steam is getting a native app called Steam Game Recording, which does exactly what you think it does: records videos of your gameplay and allows you to edit and share them online. It's available on Steam on PC, of course, but Valve clarified it's also verified to work on Steam Deck.

To be perfectly clear, this feature is in beta at the moment. You'll have to go to the Settings menu, find the Interface section, and go to Beta Participation to opt into the Game Recording beta. Once you do, though, you should be good to go.

Valve's take on game recording on Steam Deck seems like a solid effort, at least if the website advertising all the features is to be believed. You can set it to record when you press a hotkey or constantly record in the background while you play. Clips can be exported to a PC or the Steam mobile app for sharing purposes, and a replay feature will let you watch what just happened to you in a game so you can hopefully avoid it a second time.

The Steam Deck is already one of the best gaming devices out there, and Valve just keeps making it a little better.
