The best sexting apps

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 23:35

This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience.

In a world where online dating and casual hookups have become the norm, dating can still feel exhausting. Sometimes, just the thought of putting on proper clothes, coming up with witty conversation starters, and commuting to the actual meetup spot can be tiring.

No matter what kind of encounter you plan, when it comes to dating, there'll always be some sort of physical effort required. The good news? There is a loophole: Sexting.

What is sexting?

Sexting is the art of sending sexually explicit photos or messages to one or more people via text. Thanks to its recent rise in popularity, there are now apps for sexting and new sexting features in apps that are otherwise for dating in person.

What do you need to know about sexting?

Whether you're interested in giving sexting a try or you're a seasoned pro, there are a few things to keep in mind when downloading and using a new dating app to sext. Sure, there are fewer inhibitions when scoring a new sexting partner when compared to finding a long-term lover, but there are rules you should follow in order for all parties to feel at ease. Here are three big ones:

  • Mutual respect Assess the situation and know your audience. Usually, it doesn't take much more than a few pre-sext texts (or pre-sexts) to gauge whether or not someone is interested in doing the cyber-dirty with you. Take the time to figure that out before you lead with something raunchy and uncalled-for. AKA, don't just start throwing dick pics at people left and right if they didn't ask.

  • Mutual trust Be respectful: Privacy is sacred. The internet has the scary ability to make fleeting moments very permanent. If someone asks you to keep something to yourself, do it. While sexting can be light and fun, it also requires a serious level of trust. If you betray that trust, you're ruining it for everybody.

  • Privacy No app can completely protect your privacy for you — that's your job. Though there are apps that have certain features that are designed to protect your identity/content, they don't rule out all scenarios. For example, someone doesn't need to take a screenshot to capture a picture you send. They could easily use another phone or device to snap or record your photos and/or videos. You should always keep this in mind before sending anything that could be compromising, and do your best to make sure you trust the person who's receiving your messages.

Keep these points in mind when engaging in NSFW messaging.

Should you engage in sexting?

Real-life dating is obviously the best way to get to know somebody long-term, especially if you're looking for any kind of serious, in-person relationship. And real sex will always be better than sexting. However, sexting is an alternative that may help you out in ways you didn't even think about.

  • Convenience — Whether you plan to wine and dine on your date or just meet to hook up, it always requires some extra effort. For those with super hectic schedules or those who just don't have room in their life (for whatever reason) for a steady in-person relationship, sexting is practically a saving grace. After all, your sex drive doesn't go away just because you're busy. Sexting allows you to take care of your sexual needs without putting yourself out.

  • Exploring trust and intimacy — Getting comfortable with another person in close quarters doesn’t always come naturally for everyone — but opting for sexting gives way to a new level of exploration in terms of intimacy and trust. You don’t ever have to meet the person behind the screen if you don’t want to, but being able to practice feeling vulnerable without any strings attached can be a great lesson in being more open.

  • Freedom As is the case with most behind-the-screen activities, with sexting, you can let go of your inhibitions and get comfortable exploring your sexual side. Knowing there's a certain barrier between you and the other person may allow you to experiment with language and ideas that you wouldn't otherwise explore in person.

  • Fun — A little honesty, please. A night of sexting is always going to be a lot more fun than endlessly swiping right on a dating app and starting the same conversation over and over. Having the option of opening an app on your phone and engaging in a little virtual foreplay offers instant gratification and (almost) guaranteed pleasure.

  • Safety We've touched on the reasons why sexting might not be completely safe in terms of privacy, but to its credit, sexting offers an element of safety that in-person meetings don't. Sexting allows you to interact with both people you know and total strangers without putting yourself in dangerous or unwanted physical situations. Your experience should always be what you want it to be, and with sexting, if it's not going in the direction you want, it's just a matter of closing an app.

The benefits are clear for all to see, so not give it a try?

What makes an app good for sexting?

You'll want to look for certain features in an app if you're planning on sexting:

  • Ease of use You don’t want to find yourself in a hot and steamy conversation trying to figure out how to attach an image or a voice note. When it comes to sexting, the more user-friendly the platform is, the better. You’ll want something that’s efficient and fast.

  • Privacy features — What happens in a sexting app doesn’t always stay in a sexting app; there are no guarantees that your conversations or selfies won’t wind up a screenshot on someone’s phone. That said, certain apps include instant self-destruction features that delete photos and conversations after a certain amount of time.

  • Safety — If you’re looking for a night of no-strings-attached fun online, it doesn’t really matter if the person on the other end of your conversation has been verified — but if you do want to ensure you’re not being catfished or chatting with a bot, consider using an app that links social media or verifies users.

  • Subscription pricing versus free features How much are you willing to pay for bells and whistles? There are several free apps out there, but if you're looking for something a little fancier, you can pay a few pounds a month for premium features.

With these features in mind, you should be ready to select an app and start sexting. You've got this.

What is the best app for sexting?

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and Sam Altman again after dropping his previous lawsuit

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 17:52

Five months ago, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming the company breached its contract and it should once again revert to a non-profit.

Just two months ago, Musk dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI.

Today, Elon Musk has filed a new lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming he was "manipulated" into co-founding the non-profit organization that has since become the for-profit OpenAI. This new lawsuit includes much of the same as Musk's previously dropped suit.

SEE ALSO: OpenAI has a '99% effective' ChatGPT-detection tool ready. So why aren't they releasing it?

The new suit reads, "Elon Musk’s case against Sam Altman and OpenAl is a textbook tale of altruism versus greed... Altman, in concert with other Defendants, intentionally courted and deceived Musk, preying on Musk’s humanitarian concern about the existential dangers posed by artificial intelligence (AI)."

"Altman and his long-time associate Brockman assiduously manipulated Musk into co-founding their spurious non-profit venture, OpenAI Inc., by promising that it would chart a safer, more open course than profit-driven tech giants," Musk's lawsuit continues.

Musk was one of the original co-founders of OpenAI and has become one of the company's biggest critics in recent years. Musk has publicly voiced his opposition to OpenAI becoming a more closed, traditional business instead of the open-source project it originally claimed it aspired to be. Musk has cited the potential dangers of AI as the main factor driving his concerns about an OpenAI motivated by profit.

However, Musk himself has also started his own AI competitor, xAI, and raised billions since OpenAI became the biggest company in the AI industry following the success of its AI chatbot ChatGPT.

As for why Musk chose to drop the previous suit and file a new one, Musk's lawyer, Marc Toberoff, told The New York Times that "the previous suit lacked teeth — and I don’t believe in the tooth fairy."

“This is a much more forceful lawsuit," Musk's lawyer confirmed.

Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis took home Olympic gold — and the internet's hearts

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 17:39

Armond "Mondo" Duplantis has officially set the bar higher than anyone else in the world.

The Swedish-American pole vaulter took home gold and then some at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After remaining entirely unbothered throughout the event, he secured the medal and the Olympic record. Then, he continued to compete against himself and his previous world record. On his third attempt, he cleared 6.25 meters, setting a new world record.

He did it all with a coy smile and the best hair we've seen at these Olympics since Kim Yeji's severe bob.

The Louisiana-born athlete competes for his mother's country, Sweden, and is coached by his father, Greg Duplantis. He's won 19 straight competitions and set the world record in pole vaulting nine times. He's unsurprisingly the crowd's and the internet's favorite of the day. As one X user wrote, "Today’s Olympic crush is Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis."

The pole vaulter didn't need to compete at all the heights at the event, so he spent a couple of hours sitting around—foam rolling and checking his watch—while the others competed. When it was finally his turn, he easily clinched his second gold medal.

People recognized Duplantis' undeniable greatness and appreciated his laidback and confident approach to the sport. One user posted an image of a sleeping woman with the caption, "everyone fighting for their lives duplantis:" It currently has over 2,000 likes.

After his world record-breaking performance, the fan cams and love came pouring in, but according to Duplantis, he was already getting "mobbed" in Sweden before he left for the Olympic Games. In recent years, he's gained a teen following thanks to his high-profile relationship with Swedish model and influencer Desire Inglander. It's safe to say his fame just got a lot more intense — and global.

Thanks to his deep-set green eyes and face-framing curls, X users began comparing him to internet boyfriends like The Bear star Jeremy Allen White and Timothée Chalamet, but he's got that world record swag they could never have. One person jokingly wrote, "What’s most impressive about Mondo Duplantis is how he turned his family’s humble Chicago sandwich place into a fine-dining restaurant."

He also got involved in some Olympic lore with a celebratory gunshot pose that fans perceived as a callback to the Turkish silver medalist, Yusuf Dikec.

What’s Next in the U.S. Antitrust Cases Against Amazon, Apple, Google and Meta

NYT Technology - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 16:29
The federal government has more lawsuits in the pipeline trying to rein in the tech giants, including another antitrust case against Google that goes to trial next month.

'Google is a monopolist’: Google loses huge antitrust case over search

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 16:22

Google has just lost a massive antitrust lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice that has huge ramifications for big tech companies and Google Search users.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google had indeed violated federal antitrust law in order to make sure Google Search was the dominant search product online.

"Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," wrote Judge Mehta in the opinion.

How did Google get itself into this predicament?

The main issue at hand here in this case was the financial agreements that Google had with other companies in order to make sure Google Search was the default search engine in products such as Apple's Safari web browser.

Google pays Apple a whopping $20 billion a year in order to maintain its position as the default search engine on Safari for iOS, for example. Most users do not change those default settings. As a result, Google is able to serve search advertising to a large portion of Apple iPhone's user base.

The federal judge ruled that Google's practices were anticompetitive. Although the exact repercussions for the industry remain unclear, and the judge has yet to determine the penalties Google will face, it is apparent that Google's $20 billion payment to Apple to remain the default search engine on iOS is likely to come to an end.

Mashable will follow this breaking story and update readers as we learn more.

See South Carolina webcams as Tropical Storm Debby looms

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 15:25

Tropical Storm Debby threatens to bring historic rains over parts of the Southeast.

The National Weather service expects southeast Georgia and eastern South Carolina will receive extreme downpours as the downgraded hurricane (but still potent storm) stalls over these regions.

"Nothing good can come of a slower storm," National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist James Kossin previously told Mashable.

SEE ALSO: A violent event occurred on Alaska's fat bear livestream

"Slow-moving Debby is likely to generate catastrophic flooding from northern FL and along the GA/SC coasts," the agency said on Aug. 5. "Up to 30 inches of rainfall in an already flood-prone region will lead to widespread impacts. Have a plan to get to safety if and when floodwaters rise."

If you're interested in following the effects from the tropical storm, several live webcams are shown below. For those in these regions, stay tuned to local officials for guidance and updates.

Climate change is impacting hurricanes. Some of these impacts are clear, particularly more serious rainfall and historic flooding, along with higher storm surges. Other impacts, like how the relentless warming oceans are affecting how strong these storms grow, are an intensive and ongoing area of research.

OpenAI has a '99% effective' ChatGPT-detection tool ready. So why aren't they releasing it?

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 13:07

Thanks to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft-backed OpenAI has admitted to having a tool that can watermark ChatGPT-generated text. According to OpenAI, the system has been ready for over a year now; however, there's been debate on whether or not to release it.

SEE ALSO: OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT's new Voice AI (without Scarlett Johansson mode)

The admission comes in the form of an update to a May blog post from OpenAI titled "Understanding the source of what we see and hear online." According to the WSJ report, the system works by changing the way ChatGPT generates its words. Thus, the changes made by the system would leave a pattern or watermark that can be detected by the anti-cheating tool.

Internal documents obtained by WSJ show that the watermark system is 99.9 percent effective "when enough new text is created by ChatGPT."

The tool would be a godsend for teachers and educators across the country who are struggling with students using ChatGPT to cheat on assignments and essays. And despite how effective internal tests of the tool have shown — as high as 99 percent effective — OpenAI has been reluctant to release it.

The reasoning behind this, according to a statement to the WSJ from a company spokesperson, is OpenAI's belief that "the tool could disproportionately affect groups such as non-native English speakers." However, another primary reason could be an April 2023 survey that revealed that 30 percent of ChatGPT said they'd stop using the generative AI if watermarking was deployed.

This internal debate on releasing the tool has raged on for two years at OpenAI, with one source in the company telling WSJ, "It’s just a matter of pressing a button."

Apple will upgrade every Mac model to M4

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 12:53

Waiting to see if your favorite Mac model will get the latest M4 chip upgrade before buying a new computer?

Good news: Whether you're a MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, or even a Mac Pro user, the M4 will soon be coming to your favorite Mac.

According to a new report from Bloomberg's Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to roll its M4 Silicon chipset out to every single Mac computer model.

Ever since Apple released its first M4 product earlier this year with the iPad Pro, Mac users have been speculating not only when Apple's new most powerful chipset would come to their Mac desktop or laptop of choice – but also if the M4 was coming to their favorite Mac model.

Apple seemingly skipped out on upgrading some of its Mac models, such as the Mac Mini and Mac Studio, with the M3 chip. The most recent models currently available in those Mac lines are powered by the M2 chip.

When will the new M4 Macs come out?

Consumers looking to buy a new MacBook Pro, Mac mini, or iMac will be the first to score a new M4 Mac. According to Gurman, Apple is planning on releasing the M4 models for each of those Mac lines later this year.

Current MacBook Pro, Mac mini, or iMac users looking to upgrade should likely wait before doing so if they're looking to get their hands on the latest model. Last year, Apple held a rare October event just before Halloween to launch the M3 MacBook Pros and iMacs. It wouldn't be surprising to see Apple run a similar event this year to launch the first M4 Macs just before the 2024 holiday season.

SEE ALSO: Apple started paying out its $50 million settlement over MacBook's defective butterfly keyboards SEE ALSO: Score an affordable MacBook Air for your college-bound student

MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro users will have to wait a little bit longer for the M4 chip. Those models will be upgraded to M4 in 2025.

With the latest MacBook Air refresh happening just earlier this year, the release date for the M4 version makes sense. Apple launched the M3 MacBook Air line in March.

According to Gurman, Apple will focus on the benefits of the new M4 chip in its marketing for the new M4 Mac lines. Apple says that the M4 is its most powerful neural engine yet and was designed to provide the processing power necessary for the company's new upcoming AI features.

However, Gurman adds that there is "at least one Mac model that will get more dramatic changes" than just the M4 upgrade. With the M4 Mac release gossip now satiated, It looks like Apple fans have something new to speculate about.

Save $100: As of Aug. 5, you can grab the Dyson Supersonic Origin on Dyson's website for $299.99, netting you a 25% discount on the $399.99 hair dryer. Plus, you'll get two free attachments with your purchase.

From the Dyson Airwrap to the Supersonic, I've had my fair share of experience with Dyson beauty products (and their dupes). The question that leads my testing is basically always, "Is this price tag worth it?"

This question is what made me not the biggest fan of the Dyson Supersonic Origin when it was announced last August, but I can admit when a good deal is a good deal. And folks, Dyson's Aug. 5 offering of the Supersonic Origin for $299.99 with two free attachments is a good deal.

As I wrote in my initial post about the hair dryer, the list price of $400 is simply too much for the Origin, considering it comes with only one attachment. The regular Supersonic is $29 more and comes with five, and as I wrote last year, Dyson sells the attachments separately starting at $40 a pop, meaning "If the math was actually mathing, the Supersonic Origin would be retailing for $160 less, coming out to $269.99, which absolutely feels like a better deal."

While this sale price doesn't quite match up, it does offer the some of the best value I've seen on this hair dryer to date. Before you get too excited, I do have to mention that you don't get your pick of free attachment — in addition to the styling concentrator that comes with the dryer, the two offerings are the flyaway attachment and gentle air attachment, which are usually priced $39.99 each.

I also have to take this opportunity to paraphrase my Supersonic review once more and say that Dyson would make bank if they allowed folks to bundle the attachments they actually wanted.

My free business ideas aside, if you've been looking to get the Dyson Supersonic, this is likely one of the best deals you can grab, especially if you don't want to buy refurbished, and if you don't want any attachments that cater to drying hair with natural texture.

The week of August 5, there are a decent amount of discounts on tablets across retailers and brands. Are these life-changing prices? Not really. But there are some highlights, including the lowest price ever on the iPad Mini. Here are the best tablet deals to shop this week.

Among the iPads we've tested, the iPad Mini is the best for reading. It comes in the most compact size, just 8.3-inches, making it more comfortable to handle. Plus, it will take up less space in your carry-on. While the iPad Mini doesn't have the power of the M-series of Apple chips, its A15 Bionic chip has plenty of speed and performance for you to read, stream, and work on the go.

It's currently down to its lowest price ever. At $379.99, we've yet to see a better price. This week's savings knock $119.01 off the price for a discount of 24%.

The Google Pixel 8 wasn't last fall's most exciting phone upgrade, but it was still a solid one. Google didn't mess with features that didn't need fixing (which isn't always a given in the tech world), offering the same great camera, all-day battery life, and a 120Hz refresh rate. While these features might not have been worth an upgrade at their full price, at $200, or 29%, off the phone's list price, now may just be the time to buy. Though the Pixel 8 is available in five different colors, you'll only be able to score this deal on the obsidian colorway.

So, uh, why did everyone keep falling off the balance beam at the Olympics? The internet wants to know.

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 11:58

The balance beam at the 2024 Paris Olympics made more than a few enemies today.

Monday's Women's Balance Beam Finals — the second to last gymnastics event Team USA competed in — featured not one but four athletes falling, including Team USA's beloved all-around champs Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee. After their falls both Biles and Lee were shut out of medaling, much to commentator and fan dismay. Biles, the most decorated gymnast of all time, received a 13.1 placing her in fifth, while Lee, the Olympic all-around-champion in Tokyo, finished sixth.

"It was just crazy to kind of see how everybody was going down like that," Lee told the New York Times. "I think it’s just because there’s just so much pressure, you could feel the tension in the room."

Many fans echoed her sentiment on X / Twitter. One user wrote, "That balance beam final was….insane? 6 gymnasts falling including suni and Simone, two gymnasts who fell making podium, and Rebecca, Suni and Simone all falling off the podium? Whack asf" The post garnered nearly 6,000 likes.

Commentator and former Team USA gymnast Laurie Hernandez felt similarly. During the broadcast, she made an offhand remark, "Not to be a silly goose, but can someone check the beam." One user pointed out that they all fell on a similar part of the beam, inciting conspiracy theories about a loose beam.

Fans of Lee were particularly upset by the outcome as it was her last chance to earn another medal because she didn't qualify for Floor Finals. One wrote, "god take suni lee’s pain from falling off the beam and give it to ME." Another posted a video of an angry woman captioned, "Me and the beam that made suni fall."

There's always the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for a balance beam comeback. Do you think Biles has one more Olympics in her?

Vanguard, Fidelity, Charles Schwab and other trading sites crash after stock market drop

Mashable - Mon, 08/05/2024 - 11:58

Several online trading sites are down after the U.S. stock market took a nosedive on Monday morning.

After the Nasdaq, Dow Jones, and S&P 500 indexes all sharply dropped, Downdetector (which shares Mashable's parent company Ziff Davis) reported outages with financial sites. Currently, major outages on Downdetector include Charles Schwab, Vanguard, Ameritrade, and Fidelity. Bloomberg also reported that Robinhood and E-Trade are experiencing issues.

The Charles Schwab site is completely down and says it is "experiencing technical difficulties." On the Fidelity site, users have reported that they can't access their account balances.

Following last week's report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics that showed unemployment rising to 4.3 percent and fewer-than-expected 114,000 jobs added, a major selloff occurred. Major tech stocks Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Tesla all opened at lower valuation, resulting in a $1.2 trillion loss in market value (per Forbes). The market has regained some ground although tech stocks still remain negative.

Downdetector outage reports spiked around 10 a.m. ET, but have been decreasing.
