NYT Connections today: See hints and answers for March 19

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 21:00

Connections is the latest New York Times word game that's captured the public's attention. The game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for March 19's Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections?

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Ayo Edebiri's Instagram Story with Paul Mescal stokes rom-com rumors

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 17:16

There are few certainties in this life, but one is that if two gorgeous actors pose for a photo together, Film Twitter will beg for a rom-com. Such is what happened yesterday when Ayo Edebiri posted an Instagram Story with Paul Mescal in celebration of St. Patrick's Day.

Ever since the internet caught wind that the Irish actor is interested making a rom-com with Edebiri, it hasn't let it go.

SEE ALSO: Why the internet stans Ireland

Last November Mescal told Awards Watch, "In the next five years I'm going to set myself a challenge to do maybe a rom-com with Ayo, or something like that would be cool." The publication followed up with Edebiri asking what she thought of his proposal. And she's down. "If somebody writes us a good script. It has to be in an About Time vibe. Something that’s got, like, a heart, so he can still flex his drama muscles where it’s like, the covert rom-com. Like, still a rom-com, but we got to get something inventive," she said.

The Instagram story was the latest in what fans hope is a series of clues indicating their next venture. One X user wrote, "the paul mescal and ayo edebiri rom com is imminent." Another was aghast that a rom-com has yet to materialize, writing, "hollywood really doesn't know how to exploit duos anymore. jennifer lawrence and bradley cooper had 4 movies together within 3 years, yet ayo edebiri and paul mescal can't get the one romcom??"

Others said, "on my hands and knees BEGGING for a paul mescal/ayo edebiri romcom." And "sooooo paul mescal and ayo edebiri in a romcom together when."

The plot thickened when romance novelist Emily Henry reposted the St. Patrick's Day photo of the duo to her Instagram Story. Adaptations of three of Henry's wildly popular novels are in the works. Some fans took the repost as a sign that Edebiri and Mescal might star in one of those adaptations. One user sarcastically captioned a screenshot of Henry's Instagram Story with, "which could mean nothing."

Tweet may have been deleted

These conspiracy-minded individuals became even more convinced when Yulin Kuang, the screenwriter of the film version of Henry's Beach Read, also reposted the photo.

An X user posted screenshots of Henry and Kuang's Instagram Stories as well as the Beach Read script saying, "oh bitch it's happening." A quote tweet said, "just sat UPPPP."

Let's just say there's a huge opportunity to make a lot of people happy, myself included.

On the hunt for a cheap 4K TV? You have a ton of options at Amazon's Big Spring Sale.

Spring is one of the best times of year to buy a TV. It's a great time to snag a previous year's flagship TVs as they go on sale to make room for this year's models, which typically become available for public purchase in March or April. For those whose TV shopping is geared more toward budget-friendly TVs than premium ones, Amazon's Big Spring Sale has you covered.

SEE ALSO: Verizon will give you a free Nintendo Switch (and more) just for switching to Verizon Home Internet in March

While there are some 2022 and 2023 QLEDs and QNEDs from Samsung and LG thrown into this mix, the main attention grabbers at Amazon's spring event are cheap 55-inch to 75-inch QLEDs from brands like TCL and Hisense, as well as smaller options around the $200 mark. Barring a few Prime-exclusive stragglers, almost all deals in this sale are open to anyone, Prime member or not.

We're tracking the best TV deals from Amazon's Big Spring Sale below, broken down by size and ordered by price within each size bracket. Be sure to check back throughout the week — the sale officially runs between March 20 and 25, so this list is bound to grow.

If price has been the only factor deterring you from upgrading to an XL screen, check out this 75-inch QLED TV from TCL that has dropped to a new record low price of $599.99 (according to Amazon price tracker Camelcamelcamel). The Q6 is one of TCL's cheapest models to utilize quantum dots: an extra layer of nanoparticles between the screen and direct backlighting. This creates the brightness necessary for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ compatibility to be worthwhile — brightness that a regular LED TV just can't compete with.

TCL has also loaded the Q6 series with Motion Rate 240 motion smoothing technology and three HDMI ports, making it a super solid budget gaming TV.

What is Hubbl? Inside the new TV technology changing how we watch

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 15:03

By now, you’ve likely seen some advertisements popping up around the place for Hubbl. It’s some kind of entertainment product, but it’s not a new streaming service. What exactly is it?

Hubbl is both a new line of hardware, as well as advanced operating system designed to combine your streaming services and free-to-air TV together. But is that all marketing hype, or is there some truth to that branding? Let’s start with the very basics:

What does it do?

Simply put, Hubbl is a TV and streaming aggregator. Hubbl combines your streaming subscriptions onto one interface, and merges that with existing free-to-air TV channels. With this, it allows you to create personalised watchlists that factor in your streaming services, and ‘Continue Watching’ functionality that is consistent across everything you watch. The hope is that Hubbl will simplify how you search for and watch content, as well as provide the ability to manage your eligible subscriptions in one place.

Doesn’t my smart TV do this?

In varying degrees, yes. But Hubbl is more than just a homepage to access your existing apps on. The first thing you notice when using Hubbl is how it seamlessly integrates streaming apps with live TV.

Do you ever stumble upon a reality show (or otherwise) on free-to-air channels that immediately gets you hooked? Well, Hubbl automatically informs you of which streaming service you can find more of that show on, meaning you can immediately go back to the first season for context, or you can add it to your multi-app watchlist and start watching at your own pace.

What streaming services work on Hubbl?

At the time of release, alongside native apps Binge, Kayo Sports, LifeStyle and Flash, you’ll also find Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV+, iView and ABC Kids, SBS On Demand, 7plus, 9Now and 10 Play.

Stan, Optus Sport, and Paramount+ are slated to join the Hubbl platform soon.

Getting your hands on Hubbl

If you’re interested in getting started with Hubbl, you have two choices. The first is the A$99 Hubbl “puck” device (just called Hubbl). It’s a small device which you connect to your existing TV via HDMI. It’s relatively simple to set up, and the remote functions well with most existing TVs. This will likely be the most popular entry point into Hubbl.

Additionally, there is also the Hubbl Glass smart TV, with a built-in sound bar and Hubbl preinstalled. Starting at A$1,595 and available in both 55” and 65”, Hubbl Glass features a 4K Ultra HD Quantum Dot Display with 8.2 million pixels, hands-free voice control, and six powerful speakers built-in for 360° Dolby Atmos surround sound. Hubbl Glass is available in two sizes and five colours (Anthracite Black, Ocean Blue, Racing Green, Dusky Pink and Ceramic White)

If you’re in the market to buy, Hubbl Glass is currently exclusive to Harvey Norman and Hubbl.com.au, while the Hubbl puck is available at JB HI-FI, Harvey Norman and Hubbl’s website.

How much does Hubbl cost?

The standalone Hubbl device has a launch price of A$99. For the Hubbl Glass, there are two different size options available:

  • Hubbl Glass 55” – A$1,595

  • Hubbl Glass 65” – A$1,995

There is no monthly subscription cost for Hubbl, as it’s just a portal through which you access your existing services (both paid and free). However, separate app subscriptions are still needed for some services.

Hubbl Glass Credit: Hubbl How does Hubbl subscription bundling work?

A strong selling point for Hubbl is “Stack & Save”, which lets you stack eligibale streaming services Binge, Kayo, Netflix, Flash, and Lifestyle. Essentially, the more streaming apps that you connect to through Hubbl, you earn a stacking discount on your monthly bill.

At launch, if you stack 3 apps through Hubbl, you save $5 a month. If you stack 4 apps, you save $10 per month. If you add all 5 eligible apps, you can save $15.

Is Hubbl Worth It?

The Hubbl interface is surprisingly snappy, intuitive, and seamlessly integrates traditional free-to-air broadcasts into its streaming offering. Many people these days will set up a TV and never even connect to an aerial for free to air TV. In recent years the TV watching experience has boiled down to frustrated scrolling through number of apps, being blasted with content but still never finding anything to watch. With its combined watchlists and TV guide, Hubbl does a good job of changing up that routine. The ability to connect to free-to-air TV without an aerial is also a feature that will likely push a few people into trying it out, and if you’re a prolific streamer, you can save some good money on your monthly content costs.

Learn more or purchase either device on the Hubbl website, here.

We're still two days out from the start of Amazon's Big Spring Sale, but we've already found some great deals on headphones and speakers. Here are some of our favorites as of March 18:

Amazon's Big Spring Sale isn't due to start for another two days, but the retailer has already dropped tons of deals on headphones and speakers.

If you're feeling like you missed when Amazon added yet another sale to its roster, you didn't — 2024 marks the first time they'll be running a sale this time of year. Though it won't quite be another Prime Day in access or in scope (non-Prime members can participate and we don't expect to see as many deals as the other shopping holidays), there are still deals worth checking out — including early ones on headphones and speakers.

SEE ALSO: The best headphones for 2024 (and why they made our list)

The sale officially runs from March 20 to 25, but already, we've seen the AirPods Pro go back down to their all-time low price, the Bose QuietComfort line get nice price cuts, and Sony headphones get discounts of up to $100. More budget-friendly brands like JBL and Anker Soundcore are also on sale, giving you plenty of options no matter your price point.

In typical Amazon sale fashion, we've also seen other retailers like Best Buy offering competitive pricing. We'll be rounding up all the best deals on this list, so be sure to check back throughout the sale. For now, check out all the best headphone deals below, along with our top picks so far.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones are our favorite headphones for travel and some of the best headphones on the market overall. Why? They're beyond comfortable, have top-of-the-line active noise cancellation, and have excellent (immersive) audio. The fact that they're some of the best is reflected in these headphones' price, so we recommend taking advantage of sales to score them for slightly cheaper. If you're looking for a pair that's still premium but just a little easier on your wallet, we'd go for the Sony WH-1000XM4s.

The USB-C AirPods Pro came onto the scene last year, offering a much-needed upgrade with its charging port, while keeping the features we loved on the Lightning Pros. With these earbuds, you get maximum portability, great functionality with Apple devices, and some of the best ANC you can find on a pair of earbuds. At $189, these buds have returned to their lowest price ever, making now a great time to buy.

We're not going to lie, it can be a little tricky to find more-than-decent ANC on a pair of budget earbuds. At their full price of $119, the Echo Buds already offer a fairly enticing price point for that criteria, but at $54.99, that's nearly unbeatable. Mashable Tech Reporter Alex Perry wrote in his Echo Buds review, "Considering how much cheaper these are than other big-name ANC-enabled earbuds, it's pretty incredible that the ANC works as well as it does." You shouldn't expect Bose-standard noise cancellation, the touch panels can be a little too sensitive, and the battery life is just okay, but these are fair trade-offs for the money you're saving.

With spring comes warmer weather, and more chances to get outdoors for a nice hike or a trip to the beach. For a speaker that's got you covered for both, we recommend the JBL Clip 4. Its IP67 water- and dust-proof rating means it's safe from the elements, while the built-in carabiner that lets you attach it to your bag keeps it safe from your forgetful mind. Despite being so compact and portable, it still boasts decently robust sound that only starts to muddy at its higher volumes.

'Mama, kudos for saying that' is the internet's new favorite reaction

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 13:43

Did you hear that? It's the sound of a new meme taking the internet by storm.

Users over on X / Twitter are tirelessly replacing the dialogue of pivotal pop culture moments with a singular phrase: "Mama, kudos for saying that, for spilling."

SEE ALSO: 'RuPaul's Drag Race's shorter episodes have made a great show...meh

The mantra comes from the latest season of RuPaul's Drag Race. In the most recent episode that aired on Friday (March 15), one contestant, Q, revealed she was HIV-positive. Another contestant, Plane Jane, replied to Q's honesty with, "Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling." The disjointed response immediately stirred conversation among Drag Race fans online.

One user posted a screenshot of the scene to the reality TV show's subreddit on Friday with the caption, "Plane's response is so unserious 🤣." The post received over 2,500 upvotes and 184 comments.

By Sunday, the phrase reached a wider audience on X and morphed into a meme. Users replicated Plane Jane's odd reply by adding the dialogue over emotionally resonant scenes from popular TV shows and movies. It's used on scenes that have already been endlessly analyzed and meme-d before, from the types of media the Extremely Online obsesses over.

One user replaced the dialogue in the Fleabag scene in which the Hot Priest tells Fleabag "I love you" ("It will pass") with "Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling." Another added it to a screenshot of the scene in Call Me By Your Name where Elio's father accepts his sexuality and encourages him to feel his pain deeply.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

Others changed the phrasing up a bit to fit with the scene at hand. For example, one user wrote, "I just wanna give you some kudos for spilling" over the "I just want to take one more look at you" screenshot of A Star is Born.

Barbie, Little Women, Titanic, Midsommar, Oppenheimer, Mad Men, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Brokeback Mountain also received the "Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling" treatment.

Supreme Court Wary of States’ Bid to Limit Federal Contact With Social Media Companies

Spring cleaning just got easier with a ton of robot vacuums on sale at Amazon's Big Spring Sale

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 12:51
A quick look at the best early Big Spring Sale robot vacuum deals at Amazon Best budget deal iRobot Roomba j7 $299.99 at Amazon (save $300) Get Deal Best self-emptying deal Shark AI AV2501AE $349.99 at Amazon (save $300) Get Deal Best robot vacuum/mop deal Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1 $415 at Amazon (save $284.99) Get Deal

With big Amazon sale events happening in summer, fall, and winter, Spring was the odd season out until Amazon announced a Big Spring Sale running March 20 to 25. While we don't expect Prime Day-level savings across the board, there is one core category that's already seeing a healthy handful of deals: robot vacuums.

SEE ALSO: Tons of robot vacuums claim to mop, but only these 4 hybrids actually do the job

Conveniently timed with the first week of spring, you can cross floor care off of your spring cleaning list with up to 50% off some of the most popular robot vacuums from big brands like iRobot, Shark, Roborock, and eufy. And unlike Prime Day, you don't have to be a Prime member to shop most of these deals.

There are several options with smart mapping for under $200, self-emptying models under $400, and even some noteworthy chunks off of flagship 2-in-1s that not only empty themselves, but wash and dry their own mopping pads. We've categorized our top picks below by price, and will be updating the list on a daily basis during the week of the sale.

We're not not going to sound the alarm when a 50% discount is spotted on a Roomba. Even without mopping or self-emptying capabilities, the Roomba j7 is still one of the most solid Roombas — and robot vacuums in general — that you could bring home, and that's all due to small obstacle avoidance. On top of room-to-room smart mapping, any j series Roomba steers clear of things like phone chargers, pet waste, and socks.

This capability, which we first experienced when testing the Combo j7+, is an absolute game changer if your previous gripe with robot vacuums was that you had to clean up the room before sending them out to clean.

Copilot is plugging into Windows 11's File Explorer

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 12:41

File Explorer will soon be another Windows 11 feature getting the Copilot treatment.

It's still in unofficial testing mode, but the change, first spotted by leaker PhantomOfEarth on X, and confirmed by Windows Latest shows a Copilot option in the context menu.

SEE ALSO: 7 new Windows 11 features coming soon, including phone-as-a-webcam perk Tweet may have been deleted

Screenshots from Windows Latest show Copilot as an option when you right-click on a file in Windows 11 Build 26080. From there, you can select actions like "Send to Copilot" or "Summarize." Sending to Copilot enables the user to ask questions or send requests about the file within the Copilot interface and using the summarize feature also sends the file to Copilot, but with bullet-pointed overview of the document.

Microsoft has committed hard to adding Copilot, its AI-powered assistant to everything. The tech giant has added Copilot to the Windows 11 taskbar, Microsoft 365, and integration across various apps like Paint and Photos. Microsoft has even announced that it will be building Windows 11 PCs with a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard.

Copilot's underlying technology is large language models (LLMs) that when combined with Microsoft products perform tasks like summarizing information, generating text and images, writing and editing code, and generally automating various tedious actions.

Since it's still in testing mode, Copilot in File Explorer doesn't work yet, so we don't know what file summaries look like. But we can see it being a helpful tool for getting a quick glimpse at the contents of a document. Windows Latest also says more actions might be coming to this feature such as "rewrite" and editing images when you send them to Copilot like removing a background or upscaling the image resolution.

Suffice to say, prepare to see a lot more Copilot in the future.

'Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver' trailer promises a big space war

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 12:11

The second part of Zack Snyder's Star Wars Rebel Moon is almost here and there's an action-packed trailer from Netflix to go with it.

Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver will pick up exactly where Part One: A Child of Fire left off on the planet Veldt, following the battle between Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein) and his Imperium troops and the newly established band of rebels Kora (Sofia Boutella), Nemesis (Doona Bae), Titus (Djimon Hounsou), Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), Tarak (Staz Nair), Milius (E Duffy), and Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher), who sacrificed himself in the battle with that giant leap.

They were all betrayed by seemingly cool guy Kai (Charlie Hunnam), so he's gonna want to punch it and get the hell away from there. But rather than making sure Noble was good and dead, the team left, meaning Imperial military politician and Kora's former father figure Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) was able to piece him back together. Meanwhile, we saw JC-1435 or "Jimmy" the robot warrior (voiced by Anthony Hopkins) traversing the plains of Veldt in his daisy crown, but in the trailer they're in the thick of the fight.

In the trailer, you'll see plenty of battle scenes and lightsabers light swords...

Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire is now streaming on Netflix.

Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver premieres on Netflix Apr. 19.

Hackers cause EA to postpone Apex Legends pro gamer tournament

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 11:51

The North American finals of the Apex Legends tournament have been postponed after hackers attacked two gamers on professional-level teams over the weekend

"Due to the competitive integrity of this series being compromised, we have made the decision to postpone the NA finals at this time," Respawn Entertainment, the EA-owned studio that developed Apex Legends, announced in a post on X. "We will share more information soon."

Tweet may have been deleted

Twitch viewers could see the hacks deployed in real-time, as well as the surprised reactions from the pro gamers who realized they were being hacked. Clips have since been shared throughout social media.

In one clip, DarkZero Esports' Noyan Ozkose, known as "Genburten," notices a window pop up on his screen as he's playing the game. Suddenly, a message reading “Apex hacking global series by Destroyer2009 & R4ndom” starts spamming the chat repeatedly.

"Wait, what the fuck?" Genburten says, "I'm getting hacked."

Tweet may have been deleted

"It's cheating…I can see everyone," he explains to his teammates, with the video showing how the game is displaying other players behind walls that he shouldn't be able to see.

Genburten promptly leaves the game.

In another video, TSM's Phillip Dosen, aka “ImperialHal," starts shooting at another player when he realizes that he's been hacked.

"I'm cheating, I'm cheating," he shouts once he realizes what's going on. "I have aimbot."

Aimbot is a cheating software that helps players accurately shoot in a game by automatically aiming at a target.

"Oh no…you've got to leave the game," his teammates responded.

Tweet may have been deleted

As Engadget noted, EA has struggled with cheaters in its games, causing backlash from fans who feel like the company has prioritized the issue. In addition, EA laid off hundreds of employees just last month. The company also canceled a Star Wars first-person shooter that Respawn Entertainment was working on.

The decision to postpone the North American finals for Apex Legends was made on Sunday night. As of publishing time on Monday, no further announcements regarding the tournament or the hacks have been made.

Netflix's 'Scoop' trailer delves into the BBC's notorious Prince Andrew interview

Mashable - Mon, 03/18/2024 - 10:59

In 2019, BBC Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis interviewed Prince Andrew, making history with international headlines about the Duke of York's connection to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The story is now coming to Netflix, taking viewers behind-the-scenes of a crucial moment in journalism, politics, and storytelling.

After a first glimpse in February, Netflix has just released the full trailer for Scoop, which stars Gillian Anderson as Maitlis and Billie Piper as Sam McAlister, the producer who negotiated the interview with Buckingham Palace. Rufus Sewell plays the Prince.

The dramatised version of the crucial interview is based on McAlister's book, which recounts the gruelling process of securing the interview and everything that happened along the way. The one hour-long interview resulted in Prince Andrew stepping away from his royal duties and later being stripped of his military titles and patronages.

Scoop comes to Netflix on April 5.
