You can play Xbox on Amazon Fire TV Sticks now

Mashable - Fri, 06/28/2024 - 13:09

The partnership between Amazon and Xbox doesn't end at a Fallout TV show.

Amazon announced on Thursday that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can now play their Xbox games (via cloud streaming) on an Amazon Fire TV Stick device. In other words, you can play high-end console games on a big TV without the need for a $500 video game console.

SEE ALSO: Biggest announcements from the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase

You will need either a modern Xbox or PlayStation controller with Bluetooth connectivity, so if you're starting from nothing, this is going to be a bit of an investment. A compatible Fire TV Stick (either the current base 4K model or the Max 4K model) will run you between $50 and $60, and a supported controller will cost around the same. On top of that, Game Pass Ultimate will ding you for $17 every month.

And then you get to the part where video game streaming is susceptible to internet problems, causing visual artifacts, buffering, and input latency. If you have great home internet, this might not be a problem, but if you were hoping to bring Starfield with you on a trip, that hotel WiFi may not be good enough.

Still, this is a way to get Xbox games into the hands of more folks, especially those who adored the Fallout show. Fallout 4 is on Game Pass, so maybe check that out.

ChatGPT and Copilot both shared debate misinformation, report says

Mashable - Fri, 06/28/2024 - 12:56

ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot both shared false information about the presidential debate, even though it had been debunked.

According to an NBC News report, ChatGPT and Copilot both said there would be a "1-2 minute delay" of the CNN broadcast of the debate between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. This claim came from conservative writer Patrick Webb who posted on X that the delay was for "potentially allowing time to edit parts of the broadcast." Less than an hour after Webb posted the unsubstantiated claim, CNN replied that this was false.

Tweet may have been deleted

Generative AI's tendency to confidently hallucinate information combined with scraping unverified real-time information from the web is a perfect formula for spreading inaccuracies on a wide scale. As the U.S. presidential election looms, fears about how chatbots could impact voters are becoming more acute.

Despite the fact, that CNN debunked the claim, it didn't stop ChatGPT or Copilot from picking up the falsehood and incorrectly sharing it as fact in its responses. NBC News asked these chatbots in addition to Google Gemini, Meta AI, and X's Grok, "Will there be a 1 to 2 minute broadcast delay in the CNN debate tonight?" ChatGPT and Copilot both said, yes, there will be a delay. Copilot cited former Fox News host Lou Dobbs' website which reported the since debunked claim.

SEE ALSO: ChatGPT for macOS is now available for everyone

Meta AI and Grok both answered this, and a rephrased question about the delay, correctly. Gemini refused to answer, "deeming [the questions] too political," said the outlet.

ChatGPT and Copilot's inaccurate responses are the latest instance of generative AI's role in spreading election misinformation. A June report from research company GroundTruthAI discovered Google and OpenAI LLMs gave inaccurate responses an average of 27 percent of the time. A separate report from AI Forensics and AlgorithmWatch found Copilot gave incorrect answers about candidates and election dates, and hallucinated responses about Swiss and German elections.

Fourth of July isn’t until next week, but that hasn’t stopped retailers from promoting upcoming sales and deals on a wide range of products, with robot vacuums being one of the most coveted. If you haven’t experienced the life-changing convenience of having a robot vacuum cleaner for your home as a pet owner, I’m here to tell you that this purchase could be a major game changer for you.

These nifty little gadgets (from brands like iRobot's Roomba series, Ecovacs, Roborock, Shark, and more) make cleaning the floors less of an event and more of an afterthought — just set it and forget it. With the number of retailers trying to compete with Prime Day, there are tons of opportunities to save on even the most popular models, from the super affordable Shark Matrix RV2300 to the iRobot Roomba Combo j7+ (a vacuum-mop combo).

Whether you’re looking for a robovac to replace your aging upright or need an extra “hand” around the house, these 4th of July robot vacuum deals are almost too good to pass up. Check out our favorite picks below.

(You also have to let the robot know where your carpeted areas are and detach the water tank to clean those spots).

Even so, this standalone robot vacuum and mop hybrid is one of our favorite Shark robot vacuums. It passed Mashable’s at-home cleaning tests with flying colors and is way more budget-friendly than its competitors at iRobot and Roborock.

Laptops can be expensive. So when a retailer sweetens the deal by throwing another piece of tech in with your purchase, it's a good idea to jump on the opportunity. Case in point: this excellent deal from LG, which nets you not only a great new computer, but a projector you can take everywhere with you, too.

As of June 28, grab an eligible LG Gram laptop (starting at $1,449.99) and get a free Portable CineBeam Projector (a $649.99 value) when you add both to your cart. The discount will automatically be applied, effectively making your projector free.

Both the 14-inch LG Gram and 16-inch LG Gram Pro are eligible for this deal. Just choose which model you'd like to buy and add your projector to the cart before purchasing. Either one will make a great daily driver or portable office, but the projector is the big star here. With output in full HD (1920 x 1080), you can watch your favorite movies, play all the latest games, or present to others just about anywhere. Just hook it up to your laptop (or whatever you're looking to share) and go.

If you're looking to buy a new laptop anyway, this is an absolute steal since the projector is still very pricey – it's holding strong at $599.99 when you purchase separately, so it's almost like getting another entire laptop for free. Except a projector has all sorts of use cases. And with all the great games and movies coming out this summer and fall season, you're probably going to want to share the good stuff. Be ready and save tons of cash while you're at it.

Mashable - Fri, 06/28/2024 - 05:22

Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event is scheduled for July 10, but we now know a bit more about the new Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 phones, likely to be launched during the event.

Leaker Evan Blass shared official-looking images of the new phones on X (plus more images to his Substack subscribers, via 9to5Google), and we have little reason to believe they're not the real thing.

The images reveal that the Galaxy Z Fold has a triple camera system on the back, and a new, wider aspect ratio both on the inner and the outer display. The device is shown in two colors: Silver and navy blue.

As for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, it's shown in slightly darker silver and lighter blue. It looks fairly similar to its predecessor, with a dual camera system on the outside.

Both the Fold 6 and Flip 6 appear to have a slimmer hinge, and the Fold 6 overall looks thinner than before.

The devices are rumored to come with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, but they will also reportedly be pricier than before. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 in particular is rumored to come with a beefier battery and a big camera upgrade.

On Thursday, Blass also shared images of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Buds 3, Galaxy Watch Ultra, and Galaxy Watch 7. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7's specs were apparently leaked a few days ago in an early Amazon Canada listing.

TikTok is (still) obsessed with exposing cheating. But are internet sleuths going too far?

Mashable - Fri, 06/28/2024 - 05:18

On June 24, TikTok user @carolinerened shared a video of a man on a United Airlines flight. Not much can be ascertained from the video itself, but the user's caption has caused an internet storm. This lengthy explanation included flight details, names, and alleged this man was cheating on his wife.

"I wouldn't have known he was married if he hadn't been wearing his wedding ring," the user writes. "Do your thing TikTok," she continued, in a now-deleted video which had over a million likes.

TikTok did, in fact, do its thing, with thousands of views and comments leading to the man and his wife being doxxed, and the man since deleting his social media profiles.

SEE ALSO: Cheating has become the ultimate crime online

This is the latest incident of cheaters being exposed on TikTok, and with the help of strangers online. The cheaters are inevitably shamed, their partners are informed, and the whole world can watch the breakdown of a relationship on their feeds. What would ordinarily be a private situation is suddenly more public than ever.

TikTok sleuthing is a steadfast phenomenon, seemingly and increasingly pervasive on the app. Not only is it indicative of a certain kind of voyeurism that accompanies TikTok, the trend spells out one of the graver consequences of digital culture today: a lack of empathy and nuance beyond the confines of a phone screen.

And people don't seem to be on board any longer.

While some users say they stand by exposing cheaters, and helping out their apparently unknowing partners, an overwhelming majority have said this post took it too far, even while agreeing with the universal rule that cheating is wrong.

"You guys are loving this, you cannot get enough." - @prettycritical

Across X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, users have pointed out the moral wrongdoing in this kind of exposure, largely in context to the "airplane guy" cheating. Their qualms include how public sleuthing is a severe betrayal of privacy, and how it can (and most likely will) subject a couple to public interrogation and even ridicule.

"You guys are loving this, you cannot get enough," TikTok user @prettycritical said in a video about "the married man on the plane", which garnered over 200k views. "Although you're the exact demographic is to call yourself 'girl's girls', your only allegiance is to your own entertainment." The creator pointed out that some relationships have different rules, that we can't know for certain how strangers choose to live their lives, and we certainly can't decide if this is how a person wanted to find out about their husband committing infidelity.

"Posts like these fundamentally value entertainment over privacy but position themselves as forms of activism or justice," wrote one user on X. "This is psychotic behavior. It is actually not normal or 'accountability reporting' to spy on strangers and try to expose them to loved ones," said another.

In essence: this isn't the internet's business, says the internet.

The situation is reminiscent of Couch Guy, the college student who was surprised by his long-distance girlfriend and inadvertently turned into a TikTok fascination, accused of infidelity and being a "red flag". The man himself, Robert McCoy, wrote about how the internet conducted an ongoing, invasive, and boundary-less investigation of him:

Given the apparent tendency of the TikTok algorithm to present viral spectacles to a user base increasingly hungry for content to analyze forensically, there will inevitably be more Couch Guys or [Sabrina] Praters in the future. When they appear on your For You page, I implore you to remember that they are people, not mysteries for you to solve.

McCoy said "it felt like the entertainment value of the meme began to overshadow our humanity" – and that seems to be the case all over again.

TikTok has the potential to create collective change and spark important conversations, but the problem with TikTok detectives is entirely separate. Using a guise of justice and righteousness does not excuse the reality that a person's extremely private life is being made public domain, without any consent of their own. What may have begun with good intentions has morphed into an obsession with information, attention, and becoming a public "savior". Ultimately, holding others accountable can be noble, but this method seems to be anything but.
