We're finally getting robot vacuums that support a wider array of ecosystems. The new Ecovacs X Series has finally launched, and it not only offers support for Apple HomeKit but also for Matter, the universal smart home standard that allows the vacuum to work with any major smart home platform.
Easily the most interesting model in that lineup, however, is the X8 Pro Omni. This is the flagship vacuum in the Ecovacs X series, and it goes far beyond simply offering Matter and Apple HomeKit control.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Evenflo's SensorySoothe smart car seat is a calming backseat baby rave Powerful moppingEasily the best thing about the Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni is its new mopping system. The mop in the vacuum a roller mop that rotates 200 times per minute, the while cleaning itself with 16 water nozzles inside the device as it rotates. The idea is that the mop pad remains clean even with dirt. According to Ecovacs, it applies 4,000 Pa of force as it cleans.
The Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni before mopping. Credit: MashableI was able to see the mopping system action, albeit in a highly contained conducted by an EcoVac representative. In the demo, the representative painted the floor in front of the X8 Pro Omni and a competitor's vacuum with rotating mops. The X8 Pro Omni did a better clean. Hopefully, this will actually translate to real-world use, though that, of course, remains be seen.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: The Eufy E20 is a robot and stick vacuum all in oneThankfully, it goes far beyond just a high-end mopping system with a high-end vacuum system as well. The vacuum offers an impressive 18,000Pa of suction power and has an anti-tangled brush that's designed to prevent hair from getting tangled in the brush as it cleans.
And it has the Ecovacs TrueEdge 3D sensor that's designed to help it adapt to different kinds of baseboards and edges, ensuring a better clean in those hard-to-reach areas.
Smart home versatilityAs mentioned, the X8 Pro Omni is also one of the first robotic vacuums to support standards like Matter and Apple HomeKit.
Credit: MashableTo be clear, you'll still need the Vac's app, though. Matter and HomeKit will allow you to start and stop the vacuum and select cleaning modes, but you won't get advanced features like mapping and zone control. It's unlikely we'll get access to those kinds of features within the Matter spec anytime soon. So while Matter will be helpful for some day-to-day use cases, again, you're still going to want to use the dedicated app.
Cleaning innovationRobot vacuum innovation was generally front and center at CES, at least when it comes to smart home tech. On top of products like the X8 Pro Omni, other companies showed off tech like a robotic arm that can clean up things like your dirty clothes as it washes your floor. That's not to mention the likes of Eufy, which unveiled a vacuum that can be used as a robo vac or a handheld stick vacuum, simply by moving the motor from one accessory to another. It's exciting to see. Robotic vacuums have already gotten so good, but clearly, there's still a lot of room for them to grow.

What if your keyboard could be a little more versatile than it currently is? The AutoKeybo is designed to allow you to switch between traditional keyboard keys, a number pad, and a touchpad as needed with a simple gesture. That’s right – the “keyboard” houses all those components in one, large device.
The Auto Key boat was on view at CES 2025, and I had a chance to check it out for myself. I have to say, it's pretty cool, but in a weird way – and it’s probably not something I would ever use.
A split designThe auto-key bow is essentially split into two different halves, with the right half offering the right side of a traditional keyboard along with the touchpad, and the left half having the number pad and the left side of a typical keyboard. There's also a version of the AutoKeybo that has a mouse built into it instead of a touchpad.
Credit: Christian de LooperYou can only use one of those components on each side at a time, but you can switch between them quickly and easily as needed with a simple movement of your hands that's viewed by an AI camera to know when to make the switch. I tried making the keyboard switch a few times, and it worked decently well, though there was a bit of a learning curve, and I did find it to fail more often than I would have liked.
SEE ALSO: Lenovo's 'rollable' display laptop can expand with a simple hand gestureThe idea behind the keyboard is interesting. Essentially, it's built to prevent you from having to move your hands between your keyboard, mouse, and any number pad.
Much more than a keyboardBut the AutoKeybo is actually much more than a keyboard and touchpad. In fact, it's an entire computer built into one device. Under the hood is a Linux computer with a mini HDMI port on the left side and a USB-C port on the right side. That's right, with the AutoKeybo, you don't actually need another computer; you can simply use it as is.
Credit: Christian de LooperThe only problem with the AutoKeybo is that it's relatively expensive at $700, and with all those mechanical movements, I can't imagine it would last long without needing some kind of repair.
Regardless, I did like seeing a device like this on the show floor. Weird things like the AutoKeybo are exactly what makes CES more interesting.
What does life look like when you're the closest planet to the sun?
New images of the Mercury taken by a robotic spacecraft have just been released — and they show the scorched planet in fascinating up-close detail.
SEE ALSO: Is Mercury in retrograde? Yes, but there's a catch. The photos were released by the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of BepiColombo, a mission in partnership with Japan to send a spacecraft to Mercury. This latest round of photos comes via the spacecraft's sixth flyby of the solar system's smallest planet, taking it less than 300km above Mercury's surface.

Credit: ESA/BepiColombo/MTM“BepiColombo's main mission phase may only start two years from now, but all six of its flybys of Mercury have given us invaluable new information about the little-explored planet," said BepiColombo's Project Scientist at ESA, Geraint Jones, in a statement. "In the next few weeks, the BepiColombo team will work hard to unravel as many of Mercury's mysteries with the data from this flyby as we can."
BepiColombo launched in 2018, and is due to land on Mercury's surface in late 2026. The spacecraft will then split into two orbiters that will spend the next year travelling the planet to gather data.
You can visit the ESA's site for a more detailed breakdown of those images, or read about previous flybys here.

CES 2025 was the year of the smart glasses. AR / VR headsets were everywhere. Just when we thought we covered them all – check out our coverage so far on the XREAL One Pro and Chamelo – we'd come across yet another new pair of smart glasses.
Each had their own draws and features, things like AR glasses that focused on projecting your computer monitor or smartphone screen and devices made for AI transcription and translation.
However, one thing became very clear after seeing all these smart glasses: The smart glass space finally figured out how to make smart glasses look like actual conventional glasses.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Evenflo's SensorySoothe smart car seat is a calming backseat baby raveGone are the bulky, thick frames of even just last year. Smart glasses are finally sleek and inconspicuous. We've come a long way from even the geeky design of Google Glasses. The smart glasses of today look stylish.
On top of that, these new smart glasses are focusing on more practical use cases.
Two great examples of this were the Even Realities G1 and Halliday smart glasses. Both of these products focus on practical AI features like transcription and translation built into AR functionality, even though the way they pull it off are very different.
Halliday smart glasses feature lensless display option See that little green dot on the frame, right above the lens on the right? That's the Halliday smart glasses' screen. Credit: MashableHalliday, for example, has created a new type of AR smart glasses that doesn't project the augmented reality imagery from the lenses.
SEE ALSO: The Solos AirGo Vision smart glasses give you access to ChatGPT whenever you need itIn fact, you can just pop out the lenses completely and go lensless and the AR functionality will still work. Halliday pulls this off by embedding a little circular screen into the frame, right above the right lens. That way, the user can just wear the glasses as normal and just take a glance over at the screen when they need to utilize the AI transcription or translation features in the screen.

Credit: MashableWhile the Halliday certainly has some issues – I personally struggled with going cross-eyed every time my right eye tried to glance up at the screen – the company has managed to pack all this AR AI smart glasses functionality into a pretty everyday looking pair of glasses.
Even Realities G1 is conventional in look only You'd never know that the Even Realities G1 were smart glasses by the looks of them. Credit: MashableThe Even Realities G1 may even look more like an ordinary pair of everyday glasses than even the Halliday. Unlike the Halliday, the G1 takes a more conventional smart glasses route with the AR functionality built into the lenses. Both devices were comfortable to wear but the G1 was much more comfortable to use as there was no tiny screen to focus on. The AI translations and transcriptions just naturally appear imposed over the real-world as you view through your glasses.

The No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions will face off in the semi finals of the College Football Playoff (CFP). The Orange Bowl will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Notre Dame is 13-1 overall and coming off back-to-back wins in the CFP. The Fighting Irish had an affirming 27-17 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in the first round. Notre Dame followed it up with a 23-10 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. The elimination of the Bulldogs leaves the Texas Longhorns as the only SEC team left in the CFP, which was controversial after a non-targeting call in the team's victory over Arizona State. Texas will face Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on Friday.
Penn State is 13-2 overall, and also coming off back-to-back wins in the CFP. The Nittany Lions defeated the SMU Mustangs, then the Boise State Broncos. The Lions won both games by at least 17 points, but still considered less impressive victories than say Notre Dame's win over Georgia.

The Los Angeles wildfires continue to rage, with over 100,000 residents forced to evacuate, at least five dead, and 2000 structures damaged or destroyed. Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Jamie Lee Curtis started the interview with an emotional speech about her Pacific Palisades home, an area that has been devastated by the fire.
"As you know, where I live is on fire right now. Literally the entire city of the Pacific Palisades is burning. I flew here last night, I was on a plane, started getting texts, and it's ****ing gnarly you guys, it's just a catastrophe," says Curtis in the clip. "This is literally where I live. Everything. The market I shop in, the schools my kids go to, friends – many, many, many, many, many friends now – have lost their homes. So it is a really awful situation. I am obviously going to go home first thing tomorrow and be with my family and try to help my friends. But just so I can tell you, if you know anybody on the West Coast, or not — the American Red Cross, support them, they will come in and help people. Do anything you can."
