Mashable came across the Mirumi at CES Unveiled, the show's annual first big event where usually some startups vie for attention by offering up products that make attendees stop in their tracks and say "what the heck am I looking at."

The Mirumi has basically one major function as its selling point to consumers: To do just that. It's a cute, furry little robot that spontaneously turns its head towards passerbyes. As Yukai Engineering describes it, the Mirumi is a "mascot robot…designed to recreate people’s joyful experiences of noticing a human baby as he/she tries to interact with them."

Basically, Mirumi's arms act as a clasp that you can attach to your arm, bag, or anything else and the Mirumi automatically detects movement and turns its head in that direction. Users can also gently tap the back of the Mirumi to manually get some of that movement.

I took my kids, 9 and 5, to Disney World this past summer. At Galaxy's Edge, the Star Wars-themed part of Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Mandalorian character walks around greeting guests. At his side is a completely animatronic Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda, hanging out of the Mandalorian's bag. It interacts with guests by turning its head, opening its mouth, and making sounds. Kids, my own included, were absolutely enamored with this animatronic Baby Yoda and treated it like it was a live human character.

The Mirumi is going to sell like hot cakes if Yukai Engineering pulls it off correctly. (And can you imagine if they get the licensing for beloved characters, like, say Baby Yoda in the future?!) The company is planning on launching a crowdfunding campaign this year and currently intends to sell the Mirumi at $70, which is a whole lot cheaper than a one-day ticket to Disney's Hollywood Studios.

If you spend a little time on TikTok, you might have come across this viral portable battery-powered television from LG called the StanByMe.

This 27" LED touchscreen has become a must-have for road tripping influencers. The popularity of this $999 device seems to have even surprised LG based on what Mashable heard from the company at this year's CES. In order to adapt to how the StanByMe was being used, LG launched the StanByMe Go in 2023, which basically put the StanByMe in a briefcase with easy pop-out access for those travelling content creators.

Now, at CES 2025, LG has launched a brand new model, the StanByMe 2, as well as three new accessories to help display this portable touch screen television.

The new StanByMe 2 introduces some small, but important upgrades. 

The biggest change gives the StanByMe 2 a resolution bump over the previous model. The StanByMe 2 offers a 1440p picture resolution as opposed to the 1080p of the previous models.

The battery on the StanByMe 2 has also been upgraded and now offers 4 hours of battery life on a charge. The previous model offered 3 hours of battery life. In addition, the StanByMe 2's remote offers a magnet attachment to the portable TV, making it harder to misplace.

A smaller improvement is that there’s now a magnetic hub to attach the remote. There’s a USB-C port up here so you can attach a webcam for video conferencing, too. Not that you’re getting this TV if picture quality is your top priority, but the resolution offers a welcome improvement from 1080p to 1440p. Perhaps more importantly, the battery life is improved by one hour for 4 total hours of playback on one charge.

StanByMe accessories help display the TV

With the previous StanByMe model, the only real "official" way to display the device was via LG's rolling stand, which acted as an easy-to-move tripod so users could simply roll the TV to whichever room they preferred.

At CES 2025, LG not only introduced the aforementioned entirely new StanByMe model, but it also unveiled three new accessories to help display the portable TV.

LG is taking a page out of Apple's book for the iPad by introducing its own Smart Folio for the StanByMe 2. This case allows users to fold a screen cover case over into a stand for the StanByMe. In addition to that, another new StanByMe 2 accessory provide a photo frame type stand for those who want to display the device vertically.

Finally, a new harness-like accessory provides an easy way for users to hang the StanByMe 2 on their wall. LG was showcasing a cafe menu on the StanByMe2 display using this accessory, which honestly felt like a pretty great use case.

LG seems to have a real winner on their hands with the StanByMe, and the StanByMe 2 seems like an obvious progression. The company did not yet have a release date or price for the latest model.

Wonder thinks you should know your backyard like the back of your hand.

The new company from the creators of the popular Bird Buddy smart bird feeder introduced an AI-powered nature camera called the Petal at CES' Unveiled media event Sunday night. Inspired by community feedback, the device is designed to get users on a "first-name basis" with their local nature, said Franci Zidar, CEO of Wonder and co-founder of Bird Buddy.

The Petal is a colorful cup-shaped camera that can be installed a couple different ways: You can wrap its bendable stem around an object (like a branch or a fencepost), or attach it to the side of a planter using its universal clip. It's designed to blend in well with its natural surroundings either way, a notion that's hammered home by its optional solar panel attachment, which is shaped like leaf. As a complete set, it looks a lot like a minimalist, bionic flower.

The Petal captures photos and livestreams of its surroundings (and identifies its inhabitants), sending the footage to the user's smartphone so they can get a more intimate look at the goings-on in their yard or garden. Zidar told Mashable that its built-in "Nature Intelligence" AI gets involved to identify any outliers — say, a dried-up leaf, an abnormal number of aphids, or the chirps of freshly hatched bluebird chicks — balancing actionable care alerts with personalized "check out this cool thing!" insights.

Zidar said a forthcoming chat feature will give Petal users the ability to "converse" with nature. For instance, asking a flower if it's lonely will prompt recommendations for other plants that thrive in similar conditions.

For those with less-than-lively backyards, Wonder has also launched a "Wonder Block" modular system of wildlife habitats — think seed trays, bug hotels, and butterfly feeders. You know the saying: If you build it, they (the birds and the bees) will come.

Zidar said the Petal will launch on Kickstarter sometime this spring and retail for less than $100, with shipping targeted for early 2026. The release of Wonder Blocks is still to be determined.

French tech startup Lili for Life made quite the impression at CES 2025's Unveiled showcase with its latest innovation, aimed at supporting individuals with dyslexia.

Known for its flagship product, the Lili lamp, the Rouen-based startup has now introduced the Lili screen, a 27-inch monitor specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by dyslexic users.

According to the team we spoke to at CES, the Lili screen features an intelligent setup that automatically activates a dyslexia-friendly mode when connected to a compatible PC.

The Lili screen, developed by French physicists Albert Le Floch and Guy Ropars, is based on their research showing that dyslexic individuals have two dominant eyes. The condition causes overlapping "mirror" images in the brain during reading, according to the company.

The Lili screen emits nearly imperceptible light flashes that correct this overlap by creating a shift in visual perception. This innovation makes reading smoother, faster, and less tiring, enhancing text comprehension and making the experience more enjoyable for the reader, according to the company.

According to the National Institutes of Health, dyslexia impacts 5-10% of the global population, often bringing challenges like low self-confidence and cognitive strain for many schoolchildren and working adults. While not a cure, Lili for Life hopes its Lili screen can provide a practical solution that empowers those affected, according to the company.

As of now, the Lili screen is available for purchase across Europe and in the UK, and the company hopes to bring the screen to the United States sometime in the future.

Don't be alarmed if a stool with a lamp on it strolls up to you at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). That's just my pal Mi-Mo.

A model of the AI-powered robot made its debut at the trade show's Unveiled media event on Sunday night, hitting the floor on six wood-capped metal legs and greeting bystanders with gentle waves. It's made by the Japanese robotics company Jizai, which bills it as the first-ever "customizable General-Purpose AI robot." I'd describe it as the love child of a mid-century modern table and one of Sid from Toy Story's mutant toys. (Affectionately!)

Jizai CEO and creator Yuki Ishikawa told Mashable that Mi-Mo is made up of multiple AI models that give it the ability to think, act, and adapt on its own using visual, audio, and movement cues. Software engineers will be able to modify these models and develop apps for it to expand its capabilities, he added.

On the aesthetic front, Ishikawa explained that Mi-Mo is supposed to look like a piece of furniture — its wood is real, no IKEA particle board here — while moving "like a living creature." Hardware add-ons and attachments like sensors are in the works, according to a media handout.

Mi-Mo did little more than work the crowd at Unveiled, shimmying around and nodding its lit-up lampy "head," but Ishikawa hypothesized one futuristic situation where it could fetch a cup for its owner.

The preorder waitlist for Mi-Mo is now live, but you have to sign up in person at CES. (More information will be online soon.) Ishikawa said a tabletop version of Mi-Mo will retail for about $3,500, while the full-sized model will go for around $30,000. A small price to pay for your very own dystopian Pixar lamp servant, perhaps.

Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón made a brief but powerful speech at the 82nd Golden Globes on Sunday, giving a message of freedom for identity and resilience through discrimination and abuse.

The Spanish-born actor made Golden Globes history as the first transgender woman nominated for Best Female Actor (Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy) for her performance in the titular role. (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez became the first trans actor to win a Golden Globe in 2002, taking Best Actress — Television Series Drama for Pose.)

Although Gascón didn't win her category — Demi Moore took home the gold for The Substance — she was handed the microphone by director Jacques Adiard when Emilia Pérez won Best Picture (Musical/Comedy).

Gascón drew attention to the colour of her dress, a bright orange Saint Laurent gown designed by Anthony Vaccarello.

"I chose this colour tonight, the Buddhist colour, because I have a message for you: the light always wins over darkness," Gascón said.

"You can put us in jail, you can beat us up, but you never can take away our soul, our existence, our identity. I want to say to you, raise your voice, freedom, and say 'I am who I am, not who you want.'"

Emilia Pérez led in the film categories with 10 nominations, winning both Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) and Best Picture (Non-English Language). Zoe Saldaña won the award for Best Supporting Female Actor (Motion Picture), a category in which her co-star Selena Gomez was also nominated. The film also won Best Original Song (Motion Picture) for "El Mal."
