Tech has, in many ways, migrated away from gadgetry — just look at everything AI — but CES 2025 has already shown there is still room for odd, physical pieces of tech. Case in point: Look at the all the weird, fun robots at this year's version of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The massive event kicks off this week and we've already gotten a look at some of the, well, WTF-inducing robots. Here's a rundown of all the odd and neat robots thus far.
Mi-Mo: A walking stool, lamp thingThe Mi-Mo robot from Japanese robotics company Jizai looks like a Pixar creation. It looks a wooden stool with a desk lamp for a head.
As Mashable's Haley Henschel, who is on the ground in Vegas, phrased it: "I'd describe it as the love child of a mid-century modern table and one of Sid from Toy Story's mutant toys. (Affectionately!)"
Tweet may have been deletedAs far as practical applications, however, Mi-Mo did little more than greet passersby and look cute.
R2D3: A super-charged domestic robotMashable's Chance Townsend described xOpenDroids’ R2D3 as an early standout of CES 2025. It's a domestic robot aimed at doing your chores, things like folding clothes or washing dishes. And frankly, it does look like a robot you'd spot in some futuristic movie.
Tweet may have been deleted Saros Z70: A vacuum that also grabs stuffRobot vacuums aren't anything new or weird. We here at Mashable cover the latest in robot vacuums on a daily basis.
But the new Roborock Saros Z70, debuted at CES 2025, isn't just any robot vac. It's a robot vacuum with a grabby, arm thing. That robotic arm means it can tidy your home even better than before by performing tasks like picking up stray socks. It won't just avoid objects, it'll clean them. Though, as Henschel writes, while the robot vacuum is neat, the real WTF moment is the price-tag: it's likely to sell for around $2,000.
Mirumi: A little furry monster thingYukai Engineering showed off it's cute little robot monster called the Mirumi at CES 2025. Its whole purpose is to be tiny, cute, and to turn its head to look cute at passersby. Mashable's Matt Binder wrote his immediate reaction was, "Damn, people are going to love this."
The concept is to give folks a cute, robotic companion "designed to recreate people's joyful experiences of noticing a human baby as he/she tries to interact with them," Yukai Engineering noted. And, to be fair, the Mirumi does look adorable.
Tweet may have been deleted Nékojita FuFu: A little cat to cool off your beverageHere's another one from Yukai Engineering: a tiny robotic cat that'll cool your coffee. The kitty-shaped robot hangs off the side of a mug and blows air at algorithmically determined intervals to cool your hot drink, TechCrunch noted. Dubbed the Nékojita FuFu, it is both cute and a truly strange product.
Tweet may have been deleted Ballie: A rolling projectorSamsung's BB-8-looking robot will soon be an actual product you can purchase. Ballie first made headlines at CES 2020, but as CNET noted Samsung used CES 2025 to announce the rolling home robot will actually start shipping this year. (Full disclosure, CNET is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as Mashable.)
Ballie will apparently be able to roll around your home, do voice-command tasks, and project media onto various surfaces.

There was one booth at CES Unveiled, the first big annual event at the Consumer Electronics Expo, that was busy the entire night. And rightfully so. The booth had easily one of the weirdest products, if not the weirdest product you'll see at this year's CES.
That product is Kirin's Electric Salt Spoon.
What is an Electric Salt Spoon, you ask? Good question! I didn't have the slightest clue myself and neither did all the other people lining up to check it out.
SEE ALSO: How to watch the CES 2025 Nvidia keynote livestream todayThe Electric Salt Spoon is a spoon that makes your low-sodium food taste saltier without adding any extra salt. How? By sending an electric current through the spoon to your tongue.
It sounds absurd. So, naturally, I had to try it out.
The Electric Salt Spoon taste testKirin is a Japanese company that currently sells the Electric Salt Spoon in Japan. Unfortunately, it's currently unavailable in the U.S. Fortunately, Kirin brought some for CES attendees to test.
First, I took a sip of some soup that Kirin provided without the spoon. It wasn't too salty.
SEE ALSO: This little furry animatronic monster Mirumi might be the cutest thing at CES 2025Next, I was handed the Electric Salt Spoon, which is actually made up of two separate pieces. The bowl of the spoon is detachable from the handle. The handle is where the product's power and menu buttons reside.
Users can choose their saltiness level out of a potential four different modes.
From there, comes the unexpected weird part. You need to hold the handle of the spoon with a fist, like you're a big baby who still doesn't know how to correctly hold a spoon. If you don't hold it correctly, the Electric Salt Spoon does not work. The blue light on the Electric Spoon Handle turns white only when you take a sip from the spoon and you're holding it correctly. The light mocked me numerous times just as I attempted to put the spoon in my mouth.
That was the biggest drawback of the Electric Salt Spoon. I had more trouble holding a spoon with my fist than I could have possibly imagined. I literally looked like a giant toddler, dribbling soup down my chin.
SEE ALSO: CES Unveiled 2025: This walking stool waved at meAnyway, does the Electric Salt Spoon work? The soup did taste a bit saltier when I was correctly using the spoon. But, I questioned: Was this just a placebo effect? Did I just think that the food tasted saltier because the product said it was going to do that?
This is where my inability to hold the spoon with my fist actually worked in my favor. As I tried to get the soup into my mouth again, my fingers slipped, disabling the device mid-sip. My tastebuds experienced a soup transform from salty to not-so-salty in a moment like magic.
It appears the Electric Salt Spoon does work!
Kirin's mission is certainly a noble one: Get people to eat less salt. We'll see if they succeed at doing so. But, mission accomplished at being the weirdest thing Mashable has seen at CES 2025 so far.

After kicking off the 2025 Golden Globes with a roast-filled monologue, Nikki Glaser marked the halfway point with a giant scoreboard.
"So much has already happened in the first half, and the acceptance speeches have been on fire. Who got shouted out the most? Let's look at the numbers," she says in the clip above, before the screen at the back of the arena changes into a scoreboard.
"Alright, cast and crew are leading the way with 11 mentions," says Glaser. "Moms are holding strong with three shoutouts. God, creator of the universe, zero mentions. And Mario Lopez, host of Access Hollywood, one. Alright. No surprise in this godless town."
See here for the full list of Golden Globes 2025 winners, and see here for Glaser's self-sabotaged Pope-themed musical number.

Nikki Glaser's Golden Globes 2025 hosting wasn't just about the brutal opening monologue — there was also a (very brief) Pope-themed musical number.
In the clip above Glaser dons a mitre and starts to sing before suddenly turning her back to the audience and touching her ear piece.
"Oh sorry, what? Wait, this sucks?" she whispers. "This whole thing sucks? I'm embarrassing myself in front of Elton John? OK let's skip to the next song, the TV one about The Penguin. Er, 'Insane in the Peng-wayne'? That sucks too? And no-one says 'Penguin' that way?"

NVIDIA’s taking center stage at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, kicking off what could be another blockbuster year for the chip powerhouse. After a monumental 2024 — fueled by deals with OpenAI and Meta that solidified its role as the backbone of the AI boom — NVIDIA is ready to set the tone for what’s next. And it all starts at CES.
While the trade show officially opens on Jan. 7, NVIDIA is making an early splash with a keynote on Jan. 6, led by its charismatic founder and CEO, Jensen Huang. Here's what to expect and how you can tune in to watch from home.
What to Expect at NVIDIA CES 2025 KeynoteThe most anticipated reveal from NVIDIA at CES 2025 is widely expected to be the RTX 5000 series GPU. Outside of CES' automotive showcases, this could be the headlining tech announcement of the event. We already got a glimpse of the RTX 5000's potential earlier this month during the Game Awards, where CD Projekt RED debuted the cinematic trailer for The Witcher IV.
Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed a telling detail at the bottom of the screen during the trailer: "pre-rendered in Unreal Engine 5 on an unannounced RTX GPU."
Beyond the GPU buzz, NVIDIA’s blog hints at announcements that will focus on advancements in AI and robotics
How to watch NVIDIA CES 2025 KeynoteHuang's keynote will officially kick off CES 2025 on January 6 at 6:30 PM PST. You can catch the livestream on NVIDIA’s YouTube channel or directly on the company’s website.
Listen, when you go to CES, sometimes you're going to find some products that make you marvel at the complicated, intricate technological innovations that are being showcased before you.
And, then, sometimes you're going to just find some cute little furry robot that makes you say, "Damn, people are going to love this."
Yukai Engineering's Mirumi falls comfortably in that last category.
SEE ALSO: CES Unveiled 2025: OpenDroids' R2D3 domestic robot is 'Roomba on crack'Mashable came across the Mirumi at CES Unveiled, the show's annual first big event where usually some startups vie for attention by offering up products that make attendees stop in their tracks and say "what the heck am I looking at."
The Mirumi has basically one major function as its selling point to consumers: To do just that. It's a cute, furry little robot that spontaneously turns its head towards passerbyes. As Yukai Engineering describes it, the Mirumi is a "mascot robot…designed to recreate people’s joyful experiences of noticing a human baby as he/she tries to interact with them."
Mashable's Matt Binder with a Mirumi Credit: MashableBasically, Mirumi's arms act as a clasp that you can attach to your arm, bag, or anything else and the Mirumi automatically detects movement and turns its head in that direction. Users can also gently tap the back of the Mirumi to manually get some of that movement.
If you get the appeal from this off the bat, you just get it. If you don't, let me provide you with this story.
SEE ALSO: CES Unveiled 2025: This walking stool waved at meI took my kids, 9 and 5, to Disney World this past summer. At Galaxy's Edge, the Star Wars-themed part of Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Mandalorian character walks around greeting guests. At his side is a completely animatronic Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda, hanging out of the Mandalorian's bag. It interacts with guests by turning its head, opening its mouth, and making sounds. Kids, my own included, were absolutely enamored with this animatronic Baby Yoda and treated it like it was a live human character.
The Mirumi is going to sell like hot cakes if Yukai Engineering pulls it off correctly. (And can you imagine if they get the licensing for beloved characters, like, say Baby Yoda in the future?!) The company is planning on launching a crowdfunding campaign this year and currently intends to sell the Mirumi at $70, which is a whole lot cheaper than a one-day ticket to Disney's Hollywood Studios.
If you spend a little time on TikTok, you might have come across this viral portable battery-powered television from LG called the StanByMe.
This 27" LED touchscreen has become a must-have for road tripping influencers. The popularity of this $999 device seems to have even surprised LG based on what Mashable heard from the company at this year's CES. In order to adapt to how the StanByMe was being used, LG launched the StanByMe Go in 2023, which basically put the StanByMe in a briefcase with easy pop-out access for those travelling content creators.
SEE ALSO: CES Unveiled 2025: This walking stool waved at meNow, at CES 2025, LG has launched a brand new model, the StanByMe 2, as well as three new accessories to help display this portable touch screen television.
Credit: Mashable Meet StanByMe 2The new StanByMe 2 introduces some small, but important upgrades.
The biggest change gives the StanByMe 2 a resolution bump over the previous model. The StanByMe 2 offers a 1440p picture resolution as opposed to the 1080p of the previous models.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Roborock's grabby new robot vacuum is a huge flexThe battery on the StanByMe 2 has also been upgraded and now offers 4 hours of battery life on a charge. The previous model offered 3 hours of battery life. In addition, the StanByMe 2's remote offers a magnet attachment to the portable TV, making it harder to misplace.
Credit: MashableA smaller improvement is that there’s now a magnetic hub to attach the remote. There’s a USB-C port up here so you can attach a webcam for video conferencing, too. Not that you’re getting this TV if picture quality is your top priority, but the resolution offers a welcome improvement from 1080p to 1440p. Perhaps more importantly, the battery life is improved by one hour for 4 total hours of playback on one charge.
StanByMe accessories help display the TVWith the previous StanByMe model, the only real "official" way to display the device was via LG's rolling stand, which acted as an easy-to-move tripod so users could simply roll the TV to whichever room they preferred.
At CES 2025, LG not only introduced the aforementioned entirely new StanByMe model, but it also unveiled three new accessories to help display the portable TV.
Credit: MashableLG is taking a page out of Apple's book for the iPad by introducing its own Smart Folio for the StanByMe 2. This case allows users to fold a screen cover case over into a stand for the StanByMe. In addition to that, another new StanByMe 2 accessory provide a photo frame type stand for those who want to display the device vertically.
Finally, a new harness-like accessory provides an easy way for users to hang the StanByMe 2 on their wall. LG was showcasing a cafe menu on the StanByMe2 display using this accessory, which honestly felt like a pretty great use case.
SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Lili for Life unveils dyslexia-friendly monitorLG seems to have a real winner on their hands with the StanByMe, and the StanByMe 2 seems like an obvious progression. The company did not yet have a release date or price for the latest model.
