There's a new AI player in town, and you might want to pay attention to this one.

On Monday, Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek launched a new, open-source large language model called DeepSeek R1.

According to DeepSeek, R1 wins over other popular LLMs (large language models) such as OpenAI in several important benchmarks, and it's especially good with mathematical, coding, and reasoning tasks.

DeepSeek R1 is actually a refinement of DeepSeek R1 Zero, which is an LLM that was trained without a conventionally used method called supervised fine-tuning. This made it very capable in certain tasks, but as DeepSeek itself puts it, Zero had "poor readability and language mixing." Enter R1, which fixes these issues by incorporating "multi-stage training and cold-start data" before it was trained with reinforcement learning.

Arcane technical language aside (the details are online if you're interested), there are several key things you should know about DeepSeek R1. First, it's open source, meaning it's up for scrutiny from experts, which should alleviate concerns about privacy and security. Second, it's free to use as a web app, while API access is very cheap ($0.14 for one million input tokens, compared to OpenAI's $7.5 for its most powerful reasoning model, o1).

Most importantly, this thing is very, very capable. To test it out, I immediately threw it into deep waters, asking it to code a fairly complex web app which needed to parse publicly available data, and create a dynamic website with travel and weather information for tourists. Amazingly, DeepSeek produced completely acceptable HTML code right away, and was able to further refine the site based on my input while improving and optimizing the code on its own along the way.

I also asked it to improve my chess skills in five minutes, to which it replied with a number of neatly organized and very useful tips (my chess skills did not improve, but only because I was too lazy to actually go through with DeepSeek's suggestions).

I then asked DeepSeek to prove how smart it is in exactly three sentences. Bad move by me, as I, the human, am not nearly smart enough to verify or even fully understand any of the three sentences. Notice, in the screenshot below, that you can see DeepSeek's "thought process" as it figures out the answer, which is perhaps even more fascinating than the answer itself.

It's impressive to use. But as ZDnet noted, in the background of all this are training costs which are orders of magnitude lower than for some competing models, as well as chips which aren't as powerful as the chips that are on disposal for U.S. AI companies. DeepSeek thus shows that extremely clever AI with reasoning ability doesn't have to be extremely expensive to train — or to use.

Jon Stewart has already made his feelings clear on Donald Trump's inauguration, but in the Daily Show video above host Ronny Chieng gives a running commentary on some of the day's more ridiculous moments.

If you're on the fence about Apple Intelligence features on your iPhone, just know they'll be automatically installed with the next iOS update.

According to Apple's beta developer notes, Apple Intelligence will automatically be switched on when you install iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, or macOS 15.3, all expected late January.

"For users new or upgrading to iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during iPhone onboarding," the notes read. "Users will have access to Apple Intelligence features after setting up their devices." The same goes for macOS 15.3.

Modern dating horror gets a Groundhog Day-style twist in the trailer for The Death Thing, Shudder's upcoming movie from writer/director Elric Kane.

In the clip above we see Alex (Blu Hunt) doomswiping on a dating app before she meets a man (Ben Smith-Petersen) she has an instant connection with. The problem? The next time she meets him, he appears to have no recollection of their first date.

Katherine Hughes and John Karna also star in what looks like a creepy and psychological take on modern dating app culture.

The next Mars rovers may traverse the Red Planet with futuristic tires.

NASA's Glenn Research Center released imagery and footage from testing of a novel tire, called a shape memory alloy spring tire, that would be capable of incurring significant deformation on rugged terrain, before springing back to its original shape.

"We can actually deform this all the way down to the axle, and have it return to shape, which we could never even contemplate in a conventional metal system," Santo Padula, a materials research engineer at NASA Glenn, explained in a new agency video.

The space agency recently tested the tires on Martian-simulated terrain at Airbus Defence and Space in the United Kingdom. The engineers reported the tires passed testing on the rocky and slippery artificial topography — an encouraging endorsement of the technology.

The springy metal is composed of nickel-titanium, a material that can withstand intense stresses. (Previous NASA spring tire designs used steel, which more easily leads to irreversible deformation.) The current rovers on Mars, Perseverance and Curiosity, are built with tires made of aluminum and have grown battered and punctured as they crunch over the wild Martian desert.

Future extraterrestrial rovers — especially if they're crewed vehicles on Mars or the moon — would certainly benefit from damage-resistant tires. It won't be easy to fix a flat or punctured tire on another world.

Such a self-repairing material might be vital for structures, too. The moon, for example, has almost no protective atmosphere, meaning its surface is often pelted with speeding micrometeorites. "We need new materials for extreme environments that can provide energy absorption for micrometeorite strikes that happen on the moon to enable things like habitat structures for large numbers of astronauts and scientists to do work on the moon and Mars," Padula said.

Who knows — perhaps future Mars rovers, moon bases, and even moon railroad cars will contain springy metal, designed for the extremes of other worlds.

As for what to expect from the newest edition of Samsung Galaxy Unpacked, this is more than likely going to be a very phone-centric presentation this year. Leaks and rumors have indicated that Samsung will roll out the Galaxy S25 line (base, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra), with a heightened focus on AI features, some of which have already been leaked.

Other announcements are also possible, but expect the phones (and their AI gimmicks) to be the stars of the show.

Astronomers discovered the huge planet WASP-127b nearly a decade ago. Now, they've found this world harbors winds of some 20,500 mph, or 33,000 km/h.

That's nearly 19 times faster than the strongest planetary winds in our solar system — the 1,100 mph gusts on Neptune. The robust supersonic winds whipping around this distant gas giant's equator are spinning six times faster than the planet itself, which is a little bigger than Jupiter.

"This is something we haven’t seen before," Lisa Nortmann, a scientist at the University of Göttingen who led the new research, said in a statement.

Astronomers used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope facility — located in the remote and profoundly dry Chilean mountains at some 8,645 feet — to observe these extreme winds. Specifically, an instrument called the CRyogenic high-resolution InfraRed Echelle Spectrograph, or CRIRES+, which is used to look for super-Earths and the composition of other exoplanets, made the observation possible. The planet's nearby star illuminated the molecules in WASP-127b's atmosphere, allowing the instrument to reveal that one side of the atmosphere moved away from us at high speed, while the other side moved toward us at high speed.

"This signal shows us that there is a very fast, supersonic jet wind around the planet’s equator," Nortmann said.

Earth along with some other planets in our solar system have jet streams too. They're like rivers of high-speed atmospheric air, and have major implications for our Earthly weather as they separate cold and warm air masses.

Exoplanets, which are planets beyond our solar system, are often much too small and faint for space or Earth-based telescopes to capture an actual image — though there are exceptions. We can't actually see this extreme jet stream on WASP-127b, so you'll have to live with the conceptual views above.

"This is something we haven’t seen before."

But even without a direct image, astronomers can learn a lot about a world like WASP-127b based on the starlight traveling through its atmosphere and how it impacts its parent star. From the recent observations, astronomers confirmed this gas giant harbors water vapor and carbon dioxide gases, and has cooler poles and different temperatures, suggesting a complex weather system.

In the coming years, with an ever bigger telescope dubbed the Extremely Large Telescope — which hosts a huge 128-foot (39-meter) primary mirror — astronomers will be able to detect weather on much smaller, rocky worlds, perhaps similar to Earth.

But behind the goofy laugh and the signature gray suit, the late Paul Reubens was himself mysterious...until now. Pee-wee as Himself, a two-part HBO docuseries from director Matt Wolf, takes audiences behind the scenes of Pee-wee's Playhouse and into Reubens' home and personal life to create the fullest portrait ever seen of this fascinating figure.  

Through extensive interviews with the man himself and his loved ones — including Debi Mazar, David Arquette, and Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) — Pee-wee as Himself charts Reuben's youth through his rise to fame as Pee-wee, including the tabloid-fodder scandals that threatened to derail his career, his Buffy the Vampire Slayer return, and beyond. While rich with intriguing personal stories and funny anecdotes, the most fascinating element of this doc is how Reubens himself interacts with Wolf, vying for control of the project and its perspective, even though he is its subject. If you're addicted to true crime, you'll want to catch Zodiac Killer Project, a self-reflexive documentary that calls the genre's tropes into question even as it relishes in them. 

Curiously, this is less a movie about a criminal case, and more a doc about a movie that was not made. Director Charlie Shackleton set out to make an epic true crime documentary about a cop who spent decades trying to convince the world that he'd identified the true Zodiac Killer. But before production began on this would-be film, the late officer's family declined to sell the required rights. So Shackleton pivoted, making a doc that's essentially a salty pitch of what his film would have been. Over "evocative b-roll" of desolate landscapes and eerie interiors, Shackleton delivers his own narration on what he would have done, describing production design, graphic treatments, and shot choices. He'll note how these decisions have been influenced by the standards of true crime docs, unfurling unnerving montages that show no matter how different the stories are, their onscreen tellings are eerily similar. It's enough to send a chill of recognition down the spine of this true-crime addict. Through it all, Shackleton forces his audience to question what it is we expect — or even demand — from this genre, and how "truth" factors in.

Zodiac Killer Project premieres in the Next section of Sundance on Jan. 27.

You might know that Sally Ride was the first American woman to be launched into space. But do you know who she was beyond the NASA poster girl and role model to millions? Documentarian Cristina Costantini, who previously helmed Science Fair and Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado, explores the life, loves, and times of the groundbreaking astronaut in Sally.

Interviewing the late physicist's mother, sister, friends, ex-husband, former colleagues, and lesbian partner of 27 years, Costantini pieces together the path that led Ride to space, and to becoming a reluctant LGBTQ+ icon. Archival interviews of Ride clearly show the sexist approach the media took to female astronauts, asking about their beauty routines, how often they cry, and if they plan to have children — all topics Ride discouraged or insisted they ask of her male coworkers. However, the personal interviews with her loved ones reveal a side of Sally that was fiercely private, showing why that was, and how it changed. Informative, heartfelt, and occasionally funny, Sally is a compelling portrait of an American pioneer who proved the stars are for everyone.

You might think you know the story of Cinderella, her evil stepmother, and her ugly stepsisters. But we live in a post-Wicked age, and The Ugly Stepsister is here to hold space for the vilified girl who just wanted a prince of her own.

Writer/director Emilie Blichfeldt takes a hard look at this classic fairytale, re-imagining what Cinderella's story might have been like for her elder stepsister Elvira (Lea Myren), who isn't as naturally pretty, graceful, or confident as the future princess. With a mother determined to marry her off to a wealthy man, poor Elvira will be subjected to an array of brutal beauty treatments, from a medieval nose job to a stomach-churning diet hack. Relishing the chance to satirize a beauty industry that thrives on telling girls they're not enough (or are too much), Blichfeldt employs blistering gore to make her audience not only gag but also really feel Elvira's pain as if it were their own.

With a dizzying mix of fairy tale fantasy and body horror, it's little wonder The Ugly Stepsister has secured the coveted Opening Night spot of the Midnight section.

Virtual reality is the neon-lit world that binds two stories of parent-child estrangement in LUZ. Written and directed by Flora Lau, this intriguing drama travels from the streets of Chongqing to the art galleries of Paris, chasing the heartache of two very different people.

Wei (Xiao Dong Guo) is a formerly incarcerated family man, looking to get his life back together — including reconnecting with his lost daughter (Enxi Deng), who works as a cam girl. Ren (Sandrine Pinna) is the mournful daughter of a renowned but deceased painter, who pines for him and her far-flung stepmother (Isabelle Huppert). Dealing with regret, grief, and resentment, these families find face-to-face conversation too real. So could the virtual world, where an iridescent deer is endlessly hunted, be their salvation? Pensive and poetic, this family drama is sure to find devotees enchanted by Lau's unique vision.

If you miss the chaotic and caustic comedy of Difficult People, you'll cherish Touch Me.
Playing in the Midnight section, this sci-fi comedy involves an invading alien who's all about hooking up with human hotties — in ways that veer swiftly into tentacle porn territory. And yes, because his sexual touch is basically a drug for his Earthling lovers, the visuals get all trippy in the erotica of it all. But at its core, Touch Me is about two codependent friends who bring out the best and worst in each other.

Joey (Olivia Taylor Dudley) and Craig (Lou Taylor Pucci) are roommates and besties; they are deeply devoted to each other but also live for cheap thrills and drama. So, on one hand, they are totally committed to breaking ties with Joey's man-bunned and muscular ex, who besides being a literal shape-shifting extraterrestrial is also cringingly into self-care spiritualism. But they also want to take advantage of his lush pad, its amenities, and that sensual touch that is basically "heroin." Gloppy, gory, and goofy as hell, Touch Me is a sublime Midnight Movie, made to be cackled over with friends and give way too-vivid nightmares (or sex dreams?).

One of the most intriguing titles of Sundance 2025 is undoubtedly Bill Condon's return to cinema. The director behind such heralded dramas as Gods and Monsters, Kinsey, and Dreamgirls, as well as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 & 2, offers a fascinating adaptation of Kiss of the Spider-Woman, a Tony-sweeping Broadway musical based on Manuel Puig's 1967 novel.

Set in Argentina’s Dirty War of the 1980s, this musical centers on a pair of prisoners, one held on political grounds, the other arrested for indecent exposure. They bond as the latter recounts the plot of his favorite musical, painting a world beyond their grim walls. Featuring a star-studded cast of Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, and Jennifer Lopez, Kiss of the Spider Woman is a tale of art and politics that could hit hard in 2025.
