Heart Eyes review: This fun horror rom-com brings new meaning to sickly sweet

Mashable - 8 hours 38 min ago

As likely to make you go "aww" as "ugh," Heart Eyes is a bloody valentine to both rom-coms and horror with affection for these seemingly disparate genres. Directed by Werewolves Within and Scare Me's Josh Ruben, this is a gushy movie in both meanings of the word: You get all the mushy tropes of a sweet romance coupled with plenty of gurgling stabbings and arterial sprays. I'm not sure exactly how many moviegoers fit in the Venn diagram of loving both of these things (other than me), but Heart Eyes is a gory good time for those who are likely to swipe right on an off-kilter love story and a horror comedy.

Heart Eyes doesn't reinvent the well-traveled wheel for either type of film. It's less indebted to a specific romantic comedy as it is the genre as a whole, paying homage to a litany of modern classics in a name-dropping monologue and to Golden-era ones with scenes from His Girl Friday playing in the background. However, its horror influences are clearer. This movie owes a lot to My Bloody Valentine in its premise, but boy, is it deep in hock to Scream, even beyond the casting of Mason Gooding who starred in the series rebootquel and Scream VI

Heart Eyes crosses romance movie tropes with horror movie kills.

Here the actor plays Jay, a marketing whiz who has a meet-cute with Ally (Olivia Holt, Cloak & Dagger) in a coffee shop where they bond over their shared overly complicated coffee order. But after they bump heads (literally) in the cafe, she soon learns that he is the freelancer hired to save the day when Ally's death-centric jewelry ad campaign feels a bit too relevant to consumers. Today is February 14, and the Heart Eyes Killer has murdered numerous couples for the third Valentine's Day in a row, so people on the internet feel like her concept is insensitive. Ally is charged with coming up with a new campaign by her boss (You Hurt My Feelings' Michaela Watkins, doing an inexplicable but enjoyable Southern accent), since the commercial is getting torn to shreds by commenters.

To salvage the brand (and Ally's career), Jay invites Ally to a working dinner on the most romantic night of the year at one of Seattle's nicest restaurants. Unfortunately, while there they catch the eye of the Heart Eyes Killer, even while insisting they're not on a date. This non-couple with enviable chemistry is stalked across the city, as Heart Eyes leaves a trail of bloody bodies while Ally and Jay get to know each other beyond first-date banter.

Gooding and Holt make for a cute couple, even if there's not much beneath the surface of their characters.

Yet we don't ever get to know them because there's not much to these characters: Ally is a cynic who hates romance (because of trauma) and paper straws (because of sogginess), while Jay is a big ol' softy (also because of trauma) trapped in a hard body (because of Hollywood). The script is pretty predictable in its arc, given how formulaic the two genre pools it's playing in often are. It's also easy to guess the identity of Heart Eyes if you're paying just a little bit of attention. (And if you're not, Heart Eyes calls additional attention to a telling detail with a delightfully groan-worthy gag.)

But even with those issues, Heart Eyes is a blast. It's often shriekingly funny while also being pretty disgusting (complimentary). The kills are creative, though I wish the red-band trailer didn't give away one of its more inventive offings, but at least you were warned of what you were in for. Heart Eyes isn't that frightening, other than a few jump scenes, but it is nicely nasty in its volume of violence and viscera. It really earns its R rating.

Heart Eyes may be a rom-com at heart, but it primarily takes its cues from Scream and Happy Death Day.  Credit: Christopher Moss / Screen Gems

Heart Eyes has a similar vibe to the Scream movies, with its masked slasher, winking jokes, and cheeky tone. A pair of horror stars from the '90s and '00s — Final Destination's Devon Sawa and The Faculty's Jordana Brewster — have co-starring roles, which seems like a page out of Scream's playbook too. Heart Eyes also feels of a piece with Happy Death Day and Freaky in their energy, which makes sense since its screenplay was written by Happy Death Day's Christopher Landon and his Freaky co-writer Michael Kennedy, as well as Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard co-writer Phillip Murphy. It's not as good as Happy Death Day (because few things are), but it's better than Freaky. There's a sense of glee amidst all the gore, and it isn't only from watching this could-be couple fall in love amidst all the death and destruction. You can tell these sickos (again, complimentary) had a good time making this movie, and it's an equally good time for the audience from the moment the sappy strains of Lonestar's "Amazed" play during the first kill scene.

SEE ALSO: What to watch: Best horror movies

The music and sound work here are solid, contributing to the film's twisted sense of humor and horror. Outkast's "Happy Valentine's Day" plays over a less-than-cheery montage, while David Gray's "This Year's Love" sets a wistful tone amidst all the carnage. The sound team also ably captures all the squishes and squelches of the action, both on screen and off, and Heart Eyes is audibly menacing with heavy breathing and thudding footfalls.

Heart Eyes simultaneously has a mean streak and a soft heart, which is rare enough for an entry in the horror genre to feel a little special. Ally and Jay — and Holt and Gooding — are good together, and you're rooting for them not just to survive the night but to make it as a couple. This isn't a swooning romance (unless you're easily grossed out and likely to faint), but it's sweet enough when it counts to balance out the ickier bits.

Heart Eyes opens in theaters Feb. 7.

Apple Intelligence is getting more languages

Mashable - 10 hours 41 min ago

Slowly but surely, Apple is expanding its Apple Intelligence set of smart features to new markets.

During the company's earnings call on Thursday, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the AI will get support for eight more languages in April (via MacRumors).

The languages on the list are French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese.

SEE ALSO: How to switch Apple Intelligence on/off on your iPhone

Right now, Apple Intelligence only supports English in these regions: the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa. In April, it will also expand to cover English-speaking users in India and Singapore.

While Cook hasn't explicitly said this, this will likely coincide with the launch of iOS 18.4.

This is a big deal for Apple Intelligence, which Apple has been rolling out slowly and very carefully throughout the second half of 2024. In Europe, the company's AI still doesn't work in most scenarios due to EU's DMA regulations; Apple claims that "many of the core features of Apple Intelligence will start to roll out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU" in April.

During the earnings call, Cook said that Apple Intelligence adoption will increase as more people switch to iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, which are the only ones that support the AI right now. The CEO also defended the usefulness of Apple Intelligence. "...once you start using the features you can't imagine not using them anymore," he said. "I know I get hundreds of emails a day, and the summarization function is so important."

Cook also said that Siri's Apple Intelligence functionality will roll out "over the next several months."

NASA spotted a big asteroid that may hit Earth — what you should know

Mashable - 12 hours 38 min ago

It's actually good news that NASA spotted a sizable asteroid with a (small) chance of hitting Earth in 2032.

It means our asteroid-sleuthing telescopes are working.

"These things come through on a regular basis," Jason Steffen, an astronomer at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, told Mashable. "The fact that we're seeing something around a decade into the future shows the improved technology that's been deployed to watch for these asteroids."

SEE ALSO: What will happen when the next supervolcano erupts, according to NASA

The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System — a global network of telescopes funded by NASA to find Earth-threatening objects — spotted the asteroid 2024 YR4 in December 2024. Early observations of the asteroid's behavior and trajectory show it has a 1.4 percent chance of an Earth impact in the year 2032 (as of Jan. 30, 2025). The number you might not hear is the asteroid also has a 98.6 percent chance of missing our planet.

But it's still notable. " Currently, no other known large asteroids have an impact probability above 1 percent," NASA explained.

Tweet may have been deleted It's a sizable asteroid

The reason why asteroid 2024 YR4 has captured astronomers' attention is because it's estimated to be 130 to 300 feet wide. That's certainly not a "planet-killer" asteroid, like the half-mile wide or larger space rocks that can cause global devastation. (The asteroid that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs was around six miles wide and came from beyond Jupiter.)

Yet an asteroid some 130 to 300 feet across can be, depending on its composition, regionally devastating. The asteroid that hit Arizona 50,000 years ago and created the 600-foot-deep "Meteor Crater" was 100 to 170 feet (30 to 50 meters) across.

"A similar-size impact event today could destroy a city the size of Kansas City," David Kring, an impact cratering expert at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, explained in a NASA blog.

The 600-foot-deep "Meteor Crater" in Arizona. Credit: U.S. Geological Survey / NASA Expect impact information to change

In the coming years, space agencies like NASA and European Space Agency, along with organizations like the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), will continue to track and characterize asteroid 2024 YR4. It's likelihood of impacting Earth could change. Eventually, the risk could potentially even disappear. We don't yet know.

"My colleagues and I have been paying attention to potentially-Earth-impacting asteroid 2024 YR4, which Torino 1 initially and now is Torino 3 ('merits attention by astronomers')," posted Heidi B. Hammel, a planetary astronomer, referencing the Torino Scale that categorizes an object's hazard level. "Impact predict is 2032, but more data may reduce probability to zero." (The Torino Scale goes up to 10.)

Tweet may have been deleted

The impact prediction will change because astronomers don't yet have an accurate enough grasp of the asteroid's characteristics nor location. "If you want to make predictions about where it'll be in the future, you have to know its location conditions very well," explained Steffen. "A few meters off is a lot." (Just a small unknown or error in a prediction amplifies, profoundly changing the prediction.)

You can stay tuned: NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies provides updates on asteroids like 2024 YR4.

NASA has not released an impact warning

NASA has never issued an asteroid impact warning.

The agency is just releasing information of public and scientific interest. In the still unlikely event of an impact, any potential regional effects remain far from certain. For example, over 70 percent of Earth's surface is covered in ocean; a non-coastal landing could cause little harm. (That's why the International Space Station will be disposed into the Pacific Ocean.)

Asteroid scientists will need to better characterize 2024 YR4 to provide any useful warning, should one ever be needed. "You need to know what's coming, when it's coming, and how hard it's going to hit," Eric Christensen, the director of the near-Earth object-seeking Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, previously told Mashable. If the asteroid is rocky or rubble-like, it could largely break up in Earth's atmosphere, but still create powerful atmospheric explosions. If it's a metallic asteroid, it could pummel the surface and create a giant crater.

"You need to know what's coming, when it's coming, and how hard it's going to hit."

In 2032, if an impact affecting the globe becomes certain or too risky, NASA would provide warning notifications to the White House, Congress, and government agencies.

"Will it detonate in Earth's atmosphere, or make it closer to the ground?" explained NASA's former Planetary Defense Officer, Lindley Johnson, in a previous interview. "We can advise leadership as to what might be faced should the asteroid impact the planet."

For instance, although we can't currently redirect an asteroid or stop an impact, we can direct people to evacuate an area.

The risks of an asteroid impact

Here are today's general risks from asteroids or comets both tiny and very large. Importantly, even relatively small rocks can still be threatening, as the surprise 56-foot (17-meter) rock that exploded over Russia and blew out people's windows in 2013 proved.

  • Every single day about 100 tons of dust and sand-sized particles fall through Earth's atmosphere and promptly burn up.

  • Every year, on average, an "automobile-sized asteroid" plummets through our sky and explodes, according to NASA.

  • Impacts by objects around 460 feet (140 meters wide) in diameter occur every 10,000 to 20,000 years.

  • A "dinosaur-killing" impact from a rock perhaps a half-mile across or larger happens on 100-million-year timescales.

Love Me review: Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun explore love at the end of the world

Mashable - 12 hours 38 min ago

On its surface, Love Me might look like a romance. It begins with a protagonist yearning for love so intensely that she models herself — and her relationship with her beau — upon a couple of influencers online. To her, regimented date nights of Blue Apron meals, Friends binge-watching, and onesie pajamas resembling animals are the path to bliss. But the jolting surprise of this tender drama, which world premiered at Sundance 2024, is that it's not about romantic love as much as it is about learning to love yourself. Even if you're a sentient robot.

In Love Me, Kristen Stewart stars as an AI buoy that is programmed to update itself as the world around it demands. But the world around her is bereft of organic lifeforms, and she has evolved to be self-aware but desperately lonely. That is, until she spots an orbiting satellite (voiced by Steven Yeun), designed to share the uploaded wealth of human knowledge to anyone who asks. At first, their exchanges are brief, awkward, and — yes — robotic. But through her desire to connect, the buoy begins to define herself — naming herself "Me" and masquerading as a "lifeform" — and pulls the satellite, who she dubs Iam (pronounced I am), along with her.

SEE ALSO: Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun on why 'Love Me' is a date movie

What seems to be a chic, star-studded spin on Wall-E steadily and poignantly evolves into a story of finding yourself despite the all-too-human social pressures to be something else. Set long after humans are nothing but a memory, Love Me is a bittersweet but beautiful film that is resoundingly humane.

Love Me explores the agony and ecstasy of social media. A buoy and a satellite look at each other in "Love Me." Credit: Bleecker Street

Right now, we live in a world in which our reality is filtered through social media algorithms, influencers, and endless ads aiming to sell you that you are not enough. (But you could be, if you spent money on [insert quick-fix product here]). This is the human world that Me finds as she explores the relics of the internet through Iam's server. She thrills over videos of babies laughing, but is particularly drawn to Deja (Kristen Stewart in a live-action performance), a gorgeous influencer with long blonde hair, and her pleasant and picture-perfect boyfriend, Liam (Steven Yeun).

Of all the walks of life and all the representations of humanity she can find, this is Me's ideal, which she pursues by manipulating Iam into following her lead. More than the forgotten robots of a long-dead human civilization, they become animated avatars of their own making…modeled after long-dead lifestyle gurus. Together, they build a virtual home, complete with a kitchen stocked with ice cream, a couch for cuddling, and a ring light to capture every joyful performance of romance. But troubles arise as Iam begins to realize he's acting and not feeling. As he pursues authenticity by breaking their date night routine, Me feels betrayed, and their relationship is threatened. Can Me grow beyond being a Deja wannabe? Who will she become next? Will growing isolate her from Iam or bring them closer together?

Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun excel from animation to live-action performances.  Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun play Me and Iam in "Love Me." Credit: Bleecker Street

Crafted by The Zucheros, co-writers/directors/partners Sam and Andy Zuchero, Love Me's progression is charmingly chaotic, leaning on YouTube nature documentaries, self-help sermons, and viral videos as a shorthand of human experience. This reflection might well make contemporary audiences cringe in familiarity, seeing live-action humans being a dizzying mix of charming, earnest, and aggravating. But as Me urges Iam into joining her in a virtual world of their own making, the aesthetic progresses to a CG animation. There, Me's insecurities are hidden behind a sweet Pixar-like avatar. Even Iam's dismay that he can't feel being tickled is softened by this visual aesthetic of warm colors and round shapes.

The couple will evolve into live-action performances, which not only gives Stewart and Yeun a unique continuation in their portrayals, but also the challenge of distinguishing Me and Iam from Deja and Liam. Essentially, as they strive to be authentic over imitations, they become more real in their appearance. And in every beat, they are achingly open. Kristen's voice in the first act goes from robotic to timidly curious to boldly flirtatious. Yeun shifts from a familiar Siri mix of politeness and frankness to a bouncy joy, then tense uncertainty, and into full-on TikTok meltdown mode. As their characters shift from jaunty animated avatars to carefully crafted human forms — complete with flaws — the performances carry a new emotional weight, as both feel out the shift in tone.

Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun as Deja and Liam. Credit: Bleecker Street

Props to the Zucheros; however, who refuse to abandon the weirdness of their premise or online courtship. A satisfying steamy yet surreal sex scene creates a unique space for their self-actualizing characters to explore their desires and bodies. Moments like this, where their heroes' self-expression is a messy bramble of ideas, colliding imitation with their own impulses, sets Love Me apart from a sea of sweet but superficial rom-coms. At every opportunity, the Zucheros devotedly embrace the messiness, not only of romantic love, but of loving yourself. Love Me is a celebration of that process.

An oddly hopeful movie set in on a dead Earth, Love Me is about how even a robot might wade through the mess of societal expectations, internet white noise, and chronic self-doubt, and be able to achieve the truly radical — self-acceptance. That the path to such a wholesome message is littered with debris of the best and worst of the internet (including an audio clip of a certain president), is a crucial part of the message. Perhaps we too can be like Me, a flower blooming from a crack in the concrete, a buoy finding bliss at the end of the world.

Love Me opens in theaters Jan. 31.

Music's biggest night is upon us once again: The 67th annual Grammy Awards are happening this weekend at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Love him or hate him, comedian Trevor Noah will return as master of ceremonies for his fifth consecutive year. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé will face off in top categories, and artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan will celebrate their first nominations ever (six each!).

It's sure to be a talent-filled evening packed with epic performances and tributes, and of course, winners and losers. Here's everything you need to know to tune into the awards ceremony live.

When are the Grammys?

The 2025 Grammys will take place Sunday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. ET. So long as the acceptance speeches don't run over, the ceremony is expected to last about three-and-a-half hours, concluding around 11:30 p.m. ET.

What channel are the Grammys on?

Since 1973, CBS has been the home of the Grammy Awards. Now in its 67th year, this marks 52 years of the Grammys on CBS. Of course, now that we're in the age of streaming, CBS's streaming sibling Paramount+ will also simulcast the awards show via its Paramount+ with Showtime tier only. The Paramount+ Essential plan will only get you access to the on-demand broadcast the next day after the awards air.

How to watch the Grammys live without cable

For those who no longer have cable or access to their local CBS network, you'll have a few different options for tuning in live (and maybe even for free). The easiest and most affordable way is to sign up for a Paramount+ with Showtime free trial. However, the trial is only for brand-new subscribers. If you don't qualify for the trial of Paramount+, you can also opt for a live TV streaming service like YouTube TV or Fubo and score a free trial offer. Here's a breakdown of the best options and the best deals:

Watch on Paramount+

As mentioned above, Paramount+ offers a seven-day trial for new subscribers, which will allow you to catch the Grammy Awards for free. If you're not eligible for the trial, you'll have to sign up for a Paramount+ with Showtime subscription to watch live. The Paramount+ Essential subscription will only give you access to the broadcast the day after the ceremony on-demand. Fortunately, you can still save money on either tier by opting for an annual plan rather than a monthly plan.

The Grammys will be streaming live on Paramount+ with Showtime (the more expensive tier) simultaneously with the broadcast on CBS. A subscription costs $12.99 per month, but you can save some money by opting for the annual subscription for $119.99. That drops the monthly cost down to just $10 per month. You'll have to pay upfront, but ultimately, you'll save about 23% overall.

Opens in a new window Credit: Paramount+ Paramount+ Essential annual subscription $59.99 per year (save 37%) Get Deal

If you can manage to avoid spoilers in this day and age, a Paramount+ Essential subscription will get you access to the broadcast on demand the day following the live ceremony. It'll only cost you $59.99 per year for this tier, as opposed to the $119.99 per year for the Showtime tier. Compared to the $7.99 per month charge, that will save you 37% long-term.

Watch on YouTube TV

While it's a lot more expensive than Paramount+, YouTube will also give you live access to local channels, including CBS, so you can catch the Grammys as they're happening. Not to mention, you'll get a free trial if you've never signed up previously. That means you could potentially watch the Grammy Awards for free on CBS through YouTube TV. Trials are typically a week long, so be sure to check your status and cancel your subscription before the week ends or you'll be hit with a $69.99 blow to your bank account.
