The State Department announced on Wednesday its entering the late 20th century and immediately making its new online passport renewal system fully available to the public.
Tweet may have been deletedThe new offering replaces the former method — printing out a paper application and mailing it with a check. The State Department declares the online renewal system "secure" and says it will save travelers time and headaches.
SEE ALSO: How to file taxes for free onlineClicking through to the online portal (Travel.State.Gov/renewonline) leads users to the seven-step process (eight-step if you choose to enroll in email updates). One of the highlights of the new process is the option to upload a digital photo (no more coughing up money at a pharmacy or post office!), but no selfies allowed.
Another important note: Renewing online can only be done if your international travel is more than eight weeks away. If a trip is planned between three and eight weeks in the future, renewal by mail is the preferred method, while in-person service is required if a passport is needed in three weeks or less.
Moving the renewal process online follows other bureaucratic overhauls at the State Department that promise more efficiency for travelers.
"Thanks to increased staffing, technological advancements, and a host of other improvements, the average routine passport is being processed today in roughly one-third the time as at the same point last summer, and well under the advertised six to eight weeks processing times," according to a statement from State.
A peculiar bug has appeared in iOS 18.
The new Apple software update, which goes live for everyone on Friday, has already become home to a weird little glitch that has potentially catastrophic consequences. According to 9to5Mac, if you reply with a threaded message when someone shares an Apple Watch face with you over Messages, you run the risk of losing your entire text history with that person.
SEE ALSO: Apple iOS 18 release date today: When you can download it9to5Mac went a little deeper into what exactly happens when you reply to an Apple Watch face. Apparently, once it happens, the Messages app will repeatedly crash if you try to open the conversation. Harrowingly, this affects both users in the conversation, not just the person who replied in the first place. As far as anyone can tell, the quickest solution is to delete the chat history between you and the other person.
Obviously, that's not great. The simple act of replying to a watch face shouldn't run the risk of losing years of chats with a loved one. Do not be surprised if Apple fixes this with haste.
Your favorite third-party apps and devices may soon become more integrated with Apple's iOS mobile operating system then ever before – at least if you're in the EU.
On Thursday, the European Commission began its first proceedings in order "to assist Apple in complying with its interoperability obligations" that are enforced under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The first proceedings are actually two specific proceedings. One proceeding is in regard to how iOS devices work alongside other connected devices such as wearables. The other addresses interoperability with iOS devices and third-party developers' products.
"Today is the first time we use specification proceedings under the DMA to guide Apple towards effective compliance with its interoperability obligations through constructive dialogue," said European Commission Executive Vice-President in charge of competition policy Margrethe Vestager in a statement. "We are focused on ensuring fair and open digital markets. Effective interoperability, for example with smartphones and their operating systems, plays an important role in this."
SEE ALSO: Apple's iPadOS 18 is causing big problems for some iPad owners"This process will provide clarity for developers, third parties and Apple" Vestager continued. "We will continue our dialogue with Apple and consult third parties to ensure that the proposed measures work in practice and meet the needs of businesses."
Apple has to open up iOSThe DMA is an EU regulation meant to ensure that Big Tech companies are providing open and fair platforms in order to spur competition within the marketplace.
According to the Commission's latest proceedings, Apple is failing to abide by the DMA in two major ways.
The first proceeding addresses "iOS connectivity features and functionalities, predominantly used for and by connected devices." These devices are described as essentially wearables such as smartwatches, headphones, and virtual reality headsets. It appears that the EU wants Apple to be more open with the interoperability between iOS devices such as iPhone and non-Apple wearables. The Commissions specifically mentions that iOS functionalities like notifications, device pairing, and connectivity with these third-party devices need to be improved upon by Apple.
SEE ALSO: Is Apple Intelligence only on iPhone 16? We have the answersThe second proceeding takes aim at Apple over interoperability requests from third-party developers on iOS and iPadOS. According to the Commission, the request process needs to be "transparent, timely, and fair." It appears that the EU wants Apple to provide more developer access to app makers looking to integrate iOS features like Siri and Apple Pay into their software. Today, third-party developer access to some of these features is either severely limited or completely restricted.
Under the DMA, Apple will have six months to address these issues from the European Commission. If the company does not comply, the EU can fine Apple a whopping 10 percent of its annual global turnover.
These fairly new tech regulations in the EU have already impacted Apple in a number of major ways. Most notably, Apple was forced to allow third-party app stores on its iOS devices, like iPhone, which would compete with its own official App Store.
Will these DMA-spurred changes affect Apple users in the United States? In the case of alternative app stores, Apple only makes those available in the EU. However, EU regulations have had broader effects on the company outside of the territory. For example, EU regulation is what spurred Apple's move from lightning cables to USB-C for its charging cables.

Well, well, well... another retailer is entering the October Prime Day arena. Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days runs October 8 and 9, with fellow retailers joining in. Target has announced the return of Circle Week from October 6 through 12, and Best Buy dropped an entire calendar of fall savings that runs from September 25 to October 25, and hidden in that month is a 48-hour sale spanning October 8 and 9.
The next retailer to join in on the fall sales is Walmart, which just announced its holiday plan. You'll be unsurprised to hear that these savings start on... October 8. Walmart's fall savings won't require a membership to shop the deals, but members of the Walmart+ program do get early access. Here's what we know so far about Walmart's holiday sale.
When is Walmart's holiday sale?Walmart's holiday sale starts on October 8 at midnight ET exclusively online for Walmart+ members. All customers can begin shopping the holiday savings on October 8 at noon ET online, with in-store savings kicking off on October 9. The deals run through October 13, providing savings on toys, electronics, home goods, and more.
Additionally from October 14 through December 25, Walmart is offering discounts on holiday meals. Plus, the company is making it easy to give back during the holiday season. In collaboration with the Salvation Army, Walmart customers can donate the equivalent cost of a holiday meal for a local family.
What is Walmart's holiday sale?Walmart is launching six days of holiday savings. Unlike Prime Day, you don't need a membership to shop the savings. Walmart+ members do get early access to the sales event and can start shopping 12 hours earlier than everyone else, but all customers can join in on the savings starting at noon ET on October 8.
The deals encompass popular gifts and Walmart-exclusive products, and the retailer has even shared the products and savings that consumers will find come October 8. While some of these products are available now, the savings won't arrive until the sale officially kicks off next month. Here are the deals to anticipate:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Pizza Fire Delivery Van — $29 $49.15 (save $20.15)
LEGO Disney Stitch Toy Building Kit — $51.95 $64.99 (save $13.04)
Bissell Little Green Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner — $109 $153 (save $44)
Walmart+ is the retailer's membership program, in the same vein as Amazon Prime. Walmart has offered members savings events in the past, but to be honest, we found Walmart+ Week to be a flop with few deals to shop. We're already anticipating Walmart's holiday savings to be better, and members score early access to the savings.
For frequent Walmart shoppers, the $98 a year (or $12.95 a month) membership may be worth it. Here are the perks you receive when joining Walmart+:
Unlimited free delivery: All $35+ orders from Walmart stores will be delivered free of charge.
Fast shipping: Next-day and two-day shipping is free for Walmart+ members with no minimum required.
Easy returns: If you need to return something, Walmart will pick it up for you. You won't need to print any labels or repackage any products.
Savings on fuel: Walmart+ members save 10 cents per gallon at participating fueling stations like Exxon, Mobil, Walmart, Sam's Club, and more.
Auto care: Visit any Walmart Auto Care center for free flat tire repair and road hazard warranty.
Mobile scan and go: Shopping at a physical Walmart location? Use your smartphone to scan and pay for your items to make the checkout process faster.
Paramount+: Gain access to Paramount+ for no additional fee and enjoy the catalog of movies and TV shows.
Early access: Members will get first dibs on special product releases and big sale events, including Black Friday.
Walmart+ travel: Enjoy up to 5% in Walmart Cash when booking hotels, car rentals, tours, and more with Expedia, and up to 2% on flights.
Burger King savings: Treat yourself with 25% off Burger King every day & get a free Whopper with any purchase every 3 months.

Fans of The Sims have been creating imaginative relationship dynamics and Jerry Springer dramas on their computer screens for years. Now, making your Sims polyamorous is easier than ever as EA have added ethical non-monogamy to The Sims 4 Lovestruck Expansion Pack.
Non-monogamy in its many forms seems to be everywhere right now. Hundreds of articles have been talking about non-monogamy and polyamory. Some are calling it a fad, others are pointing out that it’s always been around. Trainwreck TV show Couple to Throuple presented an absolute masterclass in how not to do it, while other shows such as BBC mini-series Trigonometry got closer to good representation. And now, your Sims can be poly too.
The Lovestruck Expansion pack for Sims 4 includes new WooHoo (aka sex) spots, new interactions including a new kiss and dance, and most interestingly of all, new ways to adjust your Sims' boundaries and allow for multiple relationships.
As a polyamorous person myself (I’m in a throuple, a three-person relationship) I’m all for greater representation of different relationship structures. Polyamory being more widely talked about is, on the whole, a good thing. My partners and I certainly encounter fewer shocked responses now than we did when we first formed our throuple four years ago. More people have heard of polyamory and, for polyamorous folks, that’s a positive step towards acceptance. According to dating app Feeld, which is for folks looking for alternative relationship structures including polyamory, the app has seen a 150 percent increase in sign-ups, with users specifically looking for polyamorous and ethically non-monogamous set ups.
But there are a lot of misconceptions and often representation of polyamory gets things seriously wrong. And when it comes to polyamory in The Sims, I’m sorry to say I have more bad things to say than good.
One of the major changes in the expansion pack is the Romantic Boundaries system, which allows players to adjust their Sims' experience of jealousy. This was the first thing that leapt out at me when I heard about poly Sims. I rolled my eyes at just how obvious (but incorrect) this detail is. One of the first questions I get asked when I tell people I’m in a polyamorous relationship is "but don’t you get jealous?" And although it might seem like common sense that a very jealous person would struggle with polyamory, there’s something quite messed up in this way of thinking.
Jealousy is just an emotion like any other. Polyamorous people are not somehow immune to feeling jealous. The difference is how you choose to act on those feelings, as well as how you communicate them to your partners. A better way of representing polyamory might have been by ramping up communication and honesty, not by tuning down jealousy. This contributes to the misconception that polyamorous people are somehow shut off from our emotions, or that we are only able to be poly because we feel things less strongly than monogamous folks.
To give an example from my own relationship, when I first got into a throuple, I had already been with one of my partners, Paul, for eight years. One night, I was away for work and Paul went on a dinner date with Andrea, who we had met a few months before. It was the first time they had been on a date without me, and you better believe I felt jealous. I sat in my hotel room panicking that they were having more fun without me. But rather than keeping this feeling a secret, and letting it eat away at me, I talked about it with them. They said they had a nice evening, but it would have been just as much fun if we’d all been there. I realised that my feeling of jealousy came from a place of insecurity — I was worried they were going to decide they like each other better and ditch me. But why would they, when nobody is asking them to choose? In polyamory, you get different things from different partners, a bit like how a monogamous person might get different things from different friends. A mate who’s interested in football, for example. Or a pal who’s better at giving career advice. People often assume there will always be a favourite in polyamory, but it just doesn’t work that way. Once you learn that, you think about jealousy differently, but being a non-jealous person isn’t a prerequisite of polyamory. Being willing to communicate openly is.
The EA Games blog post about the expansion pack also seems to imply that relationships between Sims will still be as couples, but that a Sim can be in multiple unconnected couples at the same time. New Relationship Dynamics, which include Wholesome, Steamy, Strained, and Unpredictable, reflect what the Sims’ relationships are like. But the blog specifies that these will only apply to the interactions between two Sims. The blog says, for example: "Wholesome refers to two Sims who genuinely love each other and show it through their actions, both friendly and romantic." There is no mention of throuples, quads, or larger groups of polyamorous people (often called polycules).
This is a very limited view of polyamory and not at all representative of what most polyamory looks like. In fact, there are so many different types of polyamory it can be hard to keep up with. There’s kitchen table polyamory, where a group might be friendly but not necessarily all involved, there’s hierarchical polyamory, where a person might have a partner they live with and a more casual partner they see less often, there’s relationship anarchy, which holds that all relationships (romantic and otherwise) are of equal value and importance. That’s to name just a few.
The type of polyamory portrayed in The Sims seems to be a mixture of solo polyamory and parallel polyamory. This might typically look like one person dating multiple people, but those people not being involved with one another. This is a totally valid form of polyamory that works for lots of people. But it’s certainly not the only type and suggesting otherwise reinforces the idea that the only truly valid romantic relationship is between two people.
Although EA has got a lot wrong, there are a couple of things I like. The new turn-offs are relatable AF (Sims can get turned off by fishing) and there’s also a new way to measure satisfaction in relationships. Research into non-monogamy conducted by Dr. Heath Schechinger, co-founder of the Modern Family Institute and the Polyamory Legal Advocacy Coalition, found that greater satisfaction for a variety of personal needs was one of the main reasons people enjoyed being polyamorous. In this sense, polyamorous Sims are able to seek out genuine connections and that’s refreshing to see. Too often, people assume polyamory is mostly about sex. In fact, according to Schechinger’s research, this was only the 8th most mentioned reason.
In the past, The Sims has done great things for visibility around sexual and relationship diversity. In 2022, they added more sexual orientations, and in 2023 gender affirming clothing and details such as top surgery scars were added. What makes polyamory so difficult to get right is that it’s so, well, complicated. Polyamorous people sometimes compare their relationships to a "choose your own adventure". We kind of make the rules up as we go along. And no two polyamorous relationships are alike. From the perspective of a games designer, that makes for a daunting task. But as polyamory becomes more widely understood, companies should be seeking out input from people who are really experiencing these dynamics IRL, rather than going off assumptions and stereotypes.

On the island of Númenor, Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been one long test of the inhabitants' faith in the Elves and the divine Valar.
SEE ALSO: Kemen from 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' is the most punchable villain in Middle-earthSome, like new King Ar-Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle) and his slimy son Kemen (Leon Wadham), are failing spectacularly, even going so far as to desecrate the oldest Valar shrine in Númenor. A small few, like former Queen Tar-Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and former Sea Guard captain Elendil (Lloyd Owen), hold strong to their beliefs. That steadfastness has landed them in hot water, with Elendil in prison and poised to be executed. However, in episode 6, Pharazôn and his crony Lord Belzagar (Will Keen) decide that Elendil can undergo "trial by abyss," as is customary for the ways of the Valar.
The sea trial is still as good as a death sentence. After all, the process involves forcing the accused into the ocean to face off against a massive sea worm. There's likely no coming back from that, and Elendil knows it. If he dies, Pharazôn reaps not only the reward of wiping one of his detractors off the board, but also gets to further discredit the Valar by saying they abandon their followers in their time of need.
What Pharazôn couldn't predict was that Míriel would volunteer herself in Elendil's place. It's a massive moment for Míriel, an attempt to take back some control after being at her lowest point all season long. "There was definitely an excitement of getting to put her in a position where there was going to be that show of strength," Addai-Robinson told Mashable.

The same goes for Elendil when he accepts the trial by abyss, so Addai-Robinson and Owen had lots of discussion about their characters' relation to faith. Should they blindly accept Pharazôn's rule as the way things are meant to be? Is there any way his rise to power could be the will of the Valar? Or should they listen to their hearts, which tell them that what Pharazôn is doing is fundamentally wrong? Both choose the latter and stand tall in the face of Pharazôn, even if it means their lives are on the line.
For Míriel, there's another layer to her choice: that of sacrificing herself for Elendil. The decision marks a new turning point in their relationship, which initially started as a perfunctory leader-and-subject dynamic before evolving into something greater. The two are bound by their shared faith and love of Númenor, but also by the trauma they experienced in The Rings of Power's first season, when they journeyed to Middle-earth to defend the Southlands from invading Orcs. In that battle and the subsequent explosion of Mount Doom, Míriel lost her vision, and Elendil believes he lost his son Isildur (Maxim Baldry). Now, the two are each other's greatest allies.
"There's obviously a deep love there," Addai-Robinson said. "There's a lovely moment during a conversation after the debacle of the coronation [in episode 3] where she puts her hand on Elendil's chest. It shifts the dynamic, because that's not a leader-subject gesture, but it transcends the romantic. It's really more about the respect and admiration and care and love between them that doesn't necessarily lend itself to a label."

If there's shipping, we're all about it."
That deep connection to Elendil is what pushes Míriel to take on the trial of the abyss. Of course there's some doubt in her mind as she enters the water. But Addai-Robinson believes the "serenity" of Míriel's decision outweighs the very human flicker of doubt.
"If it is a sacrifice for the greater good, if it is a sacrifice for her people, if it is a sacrifice for Elendil, then it is a sacrifice worth making," Addai-Robinson said.
The Rings of Power shot the lead-up to Míriel's trial on location in Tenerife. Months before, Addai-Robinson filmed the underwater portion of the scene in a tank at Pinewood Studios, under careful supervision from a dedicated water safety team. And while the elements of Tenerife posed their own challenges, with choppy water and big waves, the tank work held some fascinating parallels to Míriel's predicament. Just like a nervous Míriel had to believe that the Valar would see her through, Addai-Robinson tempered her own worries about the scene with her faith in the people overseeing her.
"I was absolutely terrified to be underwater. It's not my comfort zone," Addai-Robinson explained. "You spend a long day in the water and it's draining psychologically, as is the case with things that we have deep fear around. In a lot of ways, you're facing your own mortality. Every minute I was down there, I had the panic response of, 'I'm going to drown. I need to come up.' So settling my mind and trusting people was, to me, the real exercise."
In the end, both Addai-Robinson and Míriel made it through the trial by abyss. The resulting scene is one of The Rings of Power's most gripping, as Míriel faces down a massive sea monster that would leave any hero quaking in their boots. Thankfully, the sea worm spares Míriel's life — much to Pharazôn's disappointment — leading Elrond to dub her "Queen of the Sea."
"If people understood all of the people that have to come together to pull some of these things off, it really is an impressive feat," Addai-Robinson said. "So I'm proud that we all managed to have this particular sequence be not just a moment of triumph for Míriel, but a moment of triumph for all of us who put this sequence together."
