Dating app Hinge is releasing its first-ever audiobook, The Bookseller reported. It features writing and narration from Rufi Thorpe, author of Margo's Got Money Troubles, Curtis Garner, Tembe Denton-Hurst, Nicola Dinan, and Raven Smith. Each author wrote about a real-life couple that met on Hinge, and the couples contribute epilogues with their own reflections.

The audiobook expands the app's "No Ordinary Love" ad campaign of as-told-to love stories. It first launched in 2024 with six stories by writers such as Roxane Gay. No Ordinary Love continued last year with five additional stories published weekly on Substack. They were penned by five new writers, including Hunter Harris, who wrote the audiobook's foreword.

The audios are available now on Substack, Spotify, Libro.fm, Apple Audiobooks, Barnes & Noble Audiobooks, and the library app Libby. You can also read the written companions on Substack.

"Hinge continues to find inspiration in the rise of book-focused conversations on social media and how it deeply resonates with Gen Z," the company told The Bookseller. "Romance is the most popular genre read by 18 to 29-year-olds, and audiobooks are growing in popularity with readers, who listen as they go about their daily lives."

Mashable attended this year's BookCon, and it was such a success that next year's conference is set to be even bigger.

Hinge's chief marketing and communications officer, Tamika Young, told The Bookseller that the campaign has always celebrated the real stories behind relationships, and that this year, the team focused on the conversations that moved those relationships forward, "the moments where someone asks the question, sends the text, or finally says the hard thing out loud."

"These stories were meant to be heard, and an audiobook gave us the opportunity to bring listeners into those moments — to hear the pauses, the hesitation, and everything that happens just before someone finally says it," Young said.

In Hinge's latest report, it found that the majority of LGBTQ daters said that consistent communication from someone they're starting to date makes them feel less anxious. Its latest feature, Friend's Take, lets a user's loved ones contribute something in writing (or audio, or an image) to their profile.

Admittedly, this is a steep price for a personal fan, when Amazon does have plenty of options under $25. While it did the trick, she did mention that the shape could be bulky while holding it, the tank on the misting head was small, and higher speeds could get loud. Furious is heating up with episode 5, "Pick a Sticker."

FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) is on the hunt for Catherine (Lola Petticrew), a serial killer on a quest of vengeance. But Alice's pursuit is being threatened by her abusive ex, Marshall (Jake Lacy), who reported that she pulled a gun on him.

Alice's boss, Nora Washington (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), tells her to straighten it out, or else she'll be pulled from the investigation. Digging into the antihero-ness of it all, Alice decides to invite Marshall to her apartment, where she seduces him and gets him drunk to break his sobriety.

In an interview with Mashable Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko, Rossum spoke to this scene in particular.

"We called that the whiskey waterboarding scene," Rossum explained. "It's a really intense scene on a number of levels."

She said, "You have my character [Alice] who's really been pushed into a corner in her job, who is having her job threatened because she tried to protect herself, because she pulled a gun on him to basically tell him [the abuse is] not going to happen again. He's used that against her to gain an upper hand in this case — and again, to kind of control her. And you have her understanding that unless she does something, she's sidelined [in the investigation]. And she knows that she has to make him fall back on his sobriety, because that's the only way to make people question the veracity of his potential statement against her." 

Speaking to how the scene was shot, Rossum, who is also a producer on Furious, shared, "We knew how complicated it would be emotionally for us as actors, physically for us as actors. We obviously had an intimacy coordinator and a fight coordinator. And we spent a day or two after work in the days leading up to it, blocking, rehearsing, and working through the beats of the scene, understanding the scene in the space, and really talking about all the ways in which these scenes can bring things up for you that can be vulnerable.

"And at the same time," Rossum added, "When you're in the great hands of [Furious creator and showrunner] Liz Meriwether, and you have a trusted crew around you, and another actor who is as brilliant and as professional as Jake [Lacy] is — I mean, we shot that scene, that section for about two days. It was really interesting and complicated. And I think once we started getting into the blocking of it, we felt like we knew it was going to work."

Furious is now streaming on Hulu, with new episodes every Monday through Aug. 31.

Spotify has rolled out a feature that lets some users skip past podcast ads not sold directly by the platform, per an exclusive report from Semafor.

In the report, Spotify frames the change as a streamlined version of its existing skip button, but publishers say it could gut their ad revenue. According to Semafor, Podnews called the update a "significant threat" to ad-funded shows, while Crooked Media co-founder Tommy Vietor was more direct, writing on social media that it was "very cool" of Spotify to "try and destroy the podcast industry."

Semafor reported that several major audio networks contacted Spotify directly after the announcement to raise concerns about their monetization. Privately, the company has argued that the feature actually helps publishers by keeping people listening longer overall, citing internal engagement data, while also stressing that the button is still in early testing and could be pulled back.

A Spotify spokesperson confirmed to Semafor that the rollout is limited to certain paid subscribers and only appears when the app is open in the foreground, describing it as part of routine product testing aimed at making podcast listening "more intuitive" for Premium users.

The move lands as the podcast industry is already contending with a broader shift toward video platforms like YouTube, Semafor noted, and it isn't the first time Spotify has drawn pushback from publishers — the company partially reversed a podcast play-count rollout last year after similar complaints.

Meta thinks the next front in the AI race may be sitting on your desk.

On Aug. 10, Meta released Muse Glimmer, a 30-billion-parameter AI model designed to run locally on a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU. Its weights are available to download from Hugging Face under a permissive Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to use, modify, and build products with the model for free.

That means Muse Glimmer can operate without sending every request to a distant data center. It can also work without an internet connection, provided the computer running it has enough memory and processing power.

For anyone ready to open an app and start chatting, however, there is a catch: Muse Glimmer is a developer release. Meta is supplying the model that can power an AI agent, rather than a consumer product that immediately manages your inbox or reorganizes your desktop.

What can Muse Glimmer actually do?

Meta built Muse Glimmer for "agentic" work, meaning it can take a goal, divide it into steps, and use connected tools to complete parts of the task. The company imagines local agents that could manage schedules, draft messages, organize files, and write or debug code.

The model can process images alongside text, perform multi-step tasks, and attempt recovery when a tool fails. Meta says it was trained on data from more than 100 languages.

Fitting those abilities onto one computer required some downsizing. At full precision, Muse Glimmer would need more than 55 GB of memory. Meta compressed the model to below 20 GB, leaving additional room for its working memory and image-processing system.

Even so, "runs on your laptop" is doing some work here. Meta designed the compressed version to fit within a 24 GB or 32 GB memory envelope and tested it on hardware, including Apple’s M4 Max and M5 Max chips and Nvidia’s RTX 5090. Your average work laptop may sit this one out.

For people with the right hardware, local processing offers some clear advantages. The model can work offline, developers can avoid paying for every request to a cloud service, and personal information does not necessarily have to leave the device. The level of privacy will still depend on how each application is built and which outside services it can access.

In Meta's own benchmark tests, Muse Glimmer performed competitively against similarly sized models from Google and Alibaba, although those results have not yet been independently verified.

Zuckerberg takes aim at closed AI

Meta describes Muse Glimmer as open source, although "open weight" is the more precise term. The calculations the model learned during training are public, but the release does not expose all the data and infrastructure used to create it.

Still, the Apache 2.0 license gives developers considerably more freedom than they receive from closed models available only through a company’s app or paid API.

Muse Glimmer is also the smaller opening act. Mark Zuckerberg said Meta will soon release the weights for Muse Spark 1.2, its more powerful foundation model. Muse Glimmer was distilled from Spark, meaning it was trained partly by learning from the larger model’s outputs.

Zuckerberg expanded his case for open AI in an essay titled "The Future Is for Everyone." He argued that the United States should loosen restrictions around training data and distillation so American companies can better compete with open models from Chinese developers, including DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Moonshot AI.

He also took a thinly veiled swipe at companies that warn about AI’s dangers while keeping their most capable models under tight control.

"The notion that AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems inherently problematic," Zuckerberg wrote.

He did not name OpenAI or Anthropic, but the contrast was clear. Both companies keep their leading model weights private, while their executives have repeatedly warned about the economic and societal risks of more powerful AI. Zuckerberg instead argued that advanced AI should be widely distributed, with each person eventually controlling an agent that understands their goals and personal context.

Releasing Muse Glimmer gives developers another option outside the paid APIs of Meta’s rivals. It also gives Meta a way to influence the AI market even when people are not using one of its apps.

Whether ordinary users are ready to give a local agent access to their schedules, messages, and files remains an open question. The more immediate hurdle may be finding a laptop muscular enough to run it.

Foldable phones have been around for a while, but I still regularly get people asking me whether they're going to break in half.

On Sunday, YouTuber JerryRigEverything tried to do just that to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8...and couldn't.

JerryRigEverything put Samsung's foldable through his typically rough set of tests to see how it'll hold up. This included scratching the display with a utility knife and burning it with a lighter. The damage was there, of course, but it wasn't fatal.

Then, JerryRigEverything tried the ultimate test by bending the phone in the direction opposite of its folding mechanism. Again, there was significant damage to the phone's hinge, and this is something that you should never do to your phone. At the end of it, however, the phone was still alive and kicking, and there was barely any damage to its display.

Being limited to one device only, the test obviously isn't perfect, but it's a testament to how far Samsung has progressed in building its foldable phones to last. As a reminder, check out what the same YouTuber's tests did to the original Samsung Galaxy Fold a few years back.

American filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun loves fucked-up horror stories. In 2021, they broke through with We're All Going to the World's Fair, a gnarly coming-of-age story with a creepypasta vibe. Three years later, Schoenbrun delivered the critically heralded I Saw the TV Glow, which used a fictional Buffy the Vampire Slayer-like series to explore emerging trans identity. Now, with Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Schoenbrun offers a tale of queer joy in the mold of a slasher comedy.

Hacks' Hannah Einbinder stars as Kris, a queer indie filmmaker entrusted with resurrection the "zombie IP" that is Camp Miasma. The iconic slasher film begat eight increasingly deranged sequels and immortalized its Southern-fried Final Girl, played by Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson). To get the reboot right, Kris travels to the abandoned summer camp where the first movie was shot so she can meet Presley, who's now an eccentric recluse. Together, they talk fried chicken, desire, and Little Death (Jack Haven), the slasher who rises from the lake to wreak havoc on Camp Miasma counselors.

To dive into the depths of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Schoenbrun and Einbinder visited Mashable's Say More studio to speak with Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko. Together, they explored the inspiration points for this surreal and silly slasher, celebrated the return of horny movies, and (naturally!) compared gummies and talked Counting Crows.

Exoskeletons are having a moment, and Ascentiz just gave everyday walkers, hikers, and cyclists a reason to pay attention. The company, which created the world's first modular exoskeleton, has launched its H Series, now available for purchase: the H Pro and the H Ultra.

Both are built around hip-level assistance that syncs with your natural gait rather than overriding it, stepping in to help during key phases of a stride, like lifting your leg or pushing off the ground. The idea is to cut down on effort, not replace how you move.

The H Pro is the lighter, more everyday option, built for walking, fitness, and lighter outdoor activity, with up to 25 kilometers of assisted range. Ascentiz says it delivers up to 1,000W of peak boost, making strides feel about 40% lighter, and it weighs just 5.5 pounds.

The H Ultra is the heavier-duty version, with a carbon-fiber and titanium-alloy frame, a dual-battery setup that extends range to 50 kilometers, and higher power output for longer trips. Both are IP54-rated for weather resistance and designed to run quietly.

The H Pro normally runs $1,499 but is currently $1,199, a $300 discount. The H Ultra normally costs $1,999 and is down to $1,599, a $400 discount. Both are available online at Ascentiz, and Ascentiz plans to display the lineup at IFA Berlin starting Sept. 4.

We’ve seen plenty of Scene Boxes add flair to Magic: The Gathering expansions like Marvel Super Heroes for a fair price, and now, the bad guy-focused collection is under $30 on Amazon for the first time. 

As of Aug. 10, Amazon has cut the price of the Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes Villains Unleashed Scene Box to $29.98. Knocking $12.01 off the $41.99 list price, this is a 29% discount on a listing sold by third-party seller Collectors Expedition but shipped from Amazon directly — with free delivery for Aug. 15 at the time of writing, or sooner for Prime members. 

This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for the Villains Unleashed Box at the retailer (confirmed by price tracker camelcamelcamel), making it very hard not to want to jump on it if you’re a keen Magic player who’s eager to see more of the superhero-themed expansion.

On the other hand, TCGplayer is still cheaper if getting the lowest possible price matters most. Complete, unopened boxes are listed at $24, including shipping, while the trading card platform’s current market price for unopened boxes is $18.96. Just watch out for the cheaper-looking listings on the page, as some are only for the art cards or other parts of the box rather than the fully sealed version.
