'The Apprentice' review: Donald Trump biopic's secret weapon is Roy Cohn

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 05:00

The first thing you notice about Sebastian Stan’s performance as Donald Trump in The Apprentice is the voice — or rather, the lack thereof. By now, years of listening to speeches and sound bites (not to mention multiple SNL impressions) have accustomed us to Trump’s exaggerated intonations and speech patterns. So when Stan’s Trump first speaks, meekly and with few traces of the voice we’ve come to know so well (minus the slightest hint of a “‘uge” or “peoPLE” here or there), it’s a shock to the system.

SEE ALSO: 42 movies you'll want to see this fall

For director Ali Abbasi's biopic, that’s the point. Trump didn't just become the bloviating, corrupt egomaniac we're all far too aware of overnight. No, someone molded him to that point, and according to the film, that someone was notorious lawyer Roy Cohn (Succession's Jeremy Strong). Cohn and Trump's mentor-apprentice relationship kickstarts The Apprentice's propulsive, if not always effective, dissection of the making of Donald Trump.

What's The Apprentice about? Maria Bakalova and Sebastian Stan in "The Apprentice." Credit: Pief Weyman

The Apprentice frames Cohn and Trump's first meeting as that of an ingenue making a deal with the devil. As Trump sits awkward and alone in an elite New York City club, Cohn locks eyes with him from across the room. Strong's unbreaking gaze and some foreboding synths courtesy of composer Martin Dirkov drive home the fact that this man is the baddest of bad news. But after one conversation about how Trump and his father (Martin Donovan) can beat a federal lawsuit concerning racial discrimination against tenants, Trump takes Cohn on as his lawyer. In turn, Cohn takes Trump on as his protégé.

SEE ALSO: 'Hard Truths' review: Mike Leigh explores deep-seated anguish through darkly funny realism

Cohn teaches Trump his three major rules for winning at all costs. One: "Attack, attack, attack." Two: "Admit nothing, deny everything." Three: "No matter what happens, you claim victory, and never admit defeat." If you pay even an ounce of attention to American politics, it's not hard to read any of these tactics onto Trump's presidency and re-election campaign. But in The Apprentice, we get to see Trump try these strategies out for the very first time, using them in his efforts to build a real estate empire and even court his first wife Ivana (Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm).

Sebastian Stan makes a solid Donald Trump, but Jeremy Strong's Roy Cohn is the standout. Jeremy Strong and Roy Cohn in "The Apprentice." Credit: Pief Weyman

As Trump embraces Cohn’s teachings and grows into a ruthless businessman, Stan’s performance changes too. He takes on many of the mannerisms we associate with Trump today, from his exaggerated hand movements to the rambling quality of his speech — the latter also comes courtesy of screenwriter and journalist Gabriel Sherman.

But even while Stan becomes “Trumpier,” his performance never veers into caricature. As horrifying as many of the things Trump does in this movie are — including an upsetting scene of marital rape — it’s clear The Apprentice doesn’t wish to ridicule outright. Instead, it lays out its version of events and the man who caused them and lets their absurdity and evil speak for themselves.

SEE ALSO: Watch Sebastian Stan become Donald Trump in 'The Apprentice' trailer

Central to this absurdity and evil is Cohn, played with scene-stealing intensity by Strong. Each focused stare demands your fullest attention, to the point that you feel like you're under a microscope alongside Trump or the other men Cohn sizes up. But Strong's Cohn isn't just all extreme evil, all the time. He finds some humor in his performance, often accentuating Cohn's tirades with a turkey-like neck bob that may just be the most mesmerizing thing in the film.

Since Strong's Cohn is such a magnetic presence, it makes sense that The Apprentice's best scenes are the ones Cohn and Trump share. Here, Abbasi's vision is clearest, showing us the genesis of a monster and the man who created him. It feels almost like a '70s-tinged Frankenstein story, with a graphic late scene of Trump undergoing liposuction and surgical treatment for his bald spot furthering the connection.

What can The Apprentice say about Donald Trump that hasn't already been said? Maria Bakalova and Sebastian Stan in "The Apprentice." Credit: Pief Weyman

Unfortunately, once The Apprentice jumps from the '70s to the '80s — a change accompanied by a visual shift from warm, grainy film to the cooler wobble of VHS — Cohn and Trump's scenes dwindle. By this point, Trump is rampaging through the real estate world, on a quest to go higher and higher. Meanwhile, out of sight, Cohn is dealing with his AIDS diagnosis. His absence throughout this portion of the film speaks louder than a hundred long-winded Trump speeches. Not only are we missing out on The Apprentice's best performance, we're also missing the twisted friendship that makes it tick.

Without Cohn around as much, The Apprentice throws us into a stretch that might as well be summarized as "Trump's greatest hits from the '80s." This includes several moments that gesture at Trump's future in politics, including Trump taking in Ronald Reagan's campaign slogan, "Let's Make America Great Again." (Earlier footage of Richard Nixon saying "I'm not a crook" also points to Trump's own criminal activity.) Yet these nods to the future fall flat, playing like dull historical Easter eggs instead of knowing comedic beats.

The latter sections of The Apprentice also hit us over the head as much as possible with things we already know about Trump: his lies, his affairs, his willingness to shove others under the bus so he comes out on top. These elements are all deeply ingrained in the current political moment, and you would hope that in an election year, a Donald Trump biopic might have more to add beyond rehashing his worst qualities. (Although that may be a useful reminder for some voters.)

The Apprentice almost transcends its rehashing of history thanks to Cohn and Trump's dynamic, which brings to the screen a genuinely fascinating relationship that may not currently be the most general knowledge. Sure, Trump is a showy figure, but it's his relationship with Cohn that makes for The Apprentice's dark, oozing heart.

The Apprentice was reviewed out of Fantastic Fest. It hits theaters Oct. 11.

Shudder's best horror comedies to scare you AND make you laugh

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 05:00

Horror and comedy are sometimes thought of as being at opposing ends of the genre spectrum — but it doesn't have to be that way.

Alongside its original movies and truly scary movies, horror streaming platform Shudder has a nice little section reserved for horror comedy. Think parodies, tongue-in-cheek gore fests, and the type of films that can make you laugh even while they're grossing you out or putting your nerves on edge.

SEE ALSO: The scariest horror movies on Shudder to keep you up at night

I've combed through the archives to track down the best horror comedies on Shudder, from Josh Ruben's highly entertaining Scare Me to Lee Min-Jae's very silly Zombie for Sale...

Zombie For Sale Credit: Christine Rampage / AMC Networks

What's it about?

A family finds a way to profit from a zombie.

Why should you watch it?

What if zombie bites weren’t all bad? More specifically, what if a nip from the undead would give the impotent new life below the belt? That’s the preposterous premise that kicks off this gleefully bonkers South Korean comedy. The Park family is scraping by running a battered gas station when their fortunes are turned by a zombie (Jung Ga-ram) with a rejuvenating bite. That’s just the first act of director Lee Min-jae’s playful horror-comedy. Family hijinks, ghoulish action, gross-out gags, and absurdly earnest romance also pop up, making for a movie that is chaotically charming and pleasantly unpredictable.* — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

How to watch: Zombie for Sale is now streaming on Shudder.

Nina Forever

What's it about?

A grief-stricken man starts up a relationship with his colleague, only to be haunted by his dead ex-girlfriend whenever they have sex.

Why should you watch it?

Yearning for a dark comedy that’s bloody fun? You’ll fall hard for Nina Forever. Co-writers/co-directors Ben Blaine and Chris Blaine have dreamed up a truly deranged tale of love and letting go, and it all begins with a macabre crush. Grocery clerk Holly (Abigail Hardingham) hopes she can help mournful motorcyclist Rob (Cian Barry) forget his last girlfriend, who died in a grisly accident. But every time these new lovers crawl into bed, Nina (Fiona O'Shaughnessy) intrudes. Or more specifically, her broken and bloody corpse crashes the party with snarky one-liners and withering eye-rolls. Full of gore, sex, and jaw-droppingly outrageous gags, this horror-comedy earns its hard-R, yet delivers a surprisingly tender tale.* — K.P.

How to watch: Nina Forever is now streaming on Shudder.

Deadstream Credit: Shudder

What's it about?

A "cancelled" YouTube prankster livestreams a tour of a haunted house in an attempt to redeem himself.

Why should you watch it?

"Full of sick thrills and dark humor, it feels like a real find," wrote Mashable's Kristy Puchko in her review. "It doesn't need a big budget, an established horror franchise, or big names to stand out. Briskly paced, wildly fun, and surprisingly smart, Deadstream is a bloody terrific good time. So, keep an eye out for it."

How to watch: Deadstream is streaming now on Shudder.

Scare Me

What's it about?

Two writers take turns telling each other scary stories after the cabins they're staying in lose power.

Why should you watch it?

Scare Me is a great example of a very simple premise being executed perfectly. Josh Ruben's tale of an amateur writer growing increasingly jealous of his professional author cabin neighbor is brilliantly written and directed, splicing witty exchanges with cleverly conjured campfire vignettes that take on a life of their own when they're performed. And this one really is all about the performances — as well as writing and directing, Ruben also stars in Scare Me alongside The Boys' Aya Cash and Saturday Night Live's Chris Redd, and the focus on storytelling means the trio have to break out their full range of (very impressive) acting talents.

There's laughter, there's tension, and although the actual scares are few, there's a creeping sense of unease that twists into something more in the film's final act.

How to watch: Scare Me is streaming now on Shudder.

One Cut of the Dead

What's it about?

A film crew attempts to shoot a low budget zombie movie in an abandoned factory.

Why should you watch it?

I can safely say that I've never seen a film quite like One Cut of the Dead. Shin'ichirô Ueda's (recently remade) comedy horror (which is far more heavy on the comedy than the horror) is essentially a movie within a movie within a movie — a Russian doll-style story about a crew making a shoestring zombie flick.

We spend the first half of the run time watching the zombie film itself, but things really get interesting in the movie's second half, when we zoom out (and back in time) to watch the director and the production crew putting the whole thing together.

If that explanation has left you feeling slightly confused, it might be for the best — One Cut of the Dead is the sort of film that's hard to explain in words, but is probably more entertaining the less you know going in.

How to watch: One Cut of the Dead is streaming now on Shudder.

Boar

What's it about?

A small town in Australia is stalked by a man-eating boar.

Why should you watch it?

Boar may not appear in the comedy category on Shudder, but let's be honest here — any film that features a hippo-sized monster pig going up against a former WWE wrestler has to be a little bit tongue-in-cheek.

Fortunately, Chris Sun's Boar is exactly that: a light-hearted popcorn-muncher that mixes some entertainingly crude dialogue with some truly ridiculous fight sequences.

The perfect film to watch with a group of friends and a few beers.

How to watch: Boar is streaming now on Shudder.

Slaxx Credit: Bertrand Calmeau/Shudder

What's it about?

A killer pair of jeans. Yep, jeans that can kill people.

Why should you watch it?

Have a passion for fashion and slashers? This midnight movie about killer jeans will be a perfect fit. Director Elza Kephart bleeds political commentary into this outlandish premise by weaving a subtext about the human cost of fast fashion. Wide-eyed ingenue Romane Denis stars as the naive new employee of a hip clothing corporation’s flagship store. Locked in overnight to prep for the hotly anticipated debut of “super shaper” denim, she and her co-workers must fight for their lives once they learn some clothes can kill. Studded with gory slaughter, goofy characters, and cutting one-liners, this stylish movie is riotous fun.* — K.P.

How to watch: Slaxx is now streaming on Shudder.

SEE ALSO: The best movies on Shudder that you can't stream anywhere else Scare Package

What's it about?

A video store owner takes on a new member of staff, who quickly gets an education in the fine art of horror movies.

Why should you watch it?

Scare Package is essentially seven miniature horror films for the price of one, an entertaining anthology from seven different directors that parodies every horror movie stereotype you can possibly imagine. Ridiculous gory deaths? Cheesy one-liners? The serial killer who won't stay dead? Each trope gets its own moment to shine in this delightful mish-mash, which is as much Cabin in the Woods-style satire as it is a love letter to the genre.

How to watch: Scare Package is streaming now on Shudder.

Glorious Credit: Shudder

What's it about?

After separating from his partner, a troubled man stops at a rest stop and strikes up a conversation with an unseen figure in a bathroom stall who claims to be a god.

Why should you watch it?

You might think a movie set almost entirely in a rest stop bathroom would be a hard sell, but the combination of a well-written script, Rebekah McKendry's creative direction and some top acting from Ryan Kwanten, J.K. Simmons, and André Lamar helps keep the pace of this one going. Extra points for the creativeness of the idea and the weird genre mish-mash, which combines silly humour, tension and Lovecraftian horror.

Amazon has one pretty good deal on a 2-in-1 laptop on October Prime Day

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 04:56

Combining the oomph of a PC with the creative functionality of a tablet, 2-in-1 laptops make solid buys for shoppers who prioritize versatility and value.

In the lead-up to Prime Big Deal Days, Amazon's "October Prime Day" sale on Oct. 8 and 9, the retail giant isn't offering a ton of great deals on 2-in-1 machines — but that's no surprise. During such sitewide sales, Amazon usually saves its best laptop deals for the exact windows of the event, forcing eager shoppers to be patient.

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Amazon's October Prime Day sale: Start time, the competition, and more

That said, there's one noteworthy 2-in-1 laptop deal up for grabs there outside of the official Prime Big Deal Days programming (i.e., its not featured on its event page), and it's a $105 discount on the Mashable Choice Award-winning Asus Zenbook Duo, our favorite dual-screener.

According to the price-tracking site camelcamelcamel.com, this isn't some new deal Amazon just whipped out; the Zenbook Duo has been sitting at the same price since late September. Knowing that, we think there's a good chance it could get even cheaper once Prime Big Deal Days formally starts. Up to you if you want to wait to find out, but it may help to know that this is its current all-time low.

The Mashable Shopping team will be closely monitoring Prime Big Deal Days deals, and we'll update this story if we find any other, better doorbusters on 2-in-1s. In the meantime, you can learn more about the Zenbook Duo below.

After reviewing the Zenbook Duo, tech editor Kim Gedeon declared that "[single]-screen laptops are now cancelled." She gave it a near-perfect 4.8/5 rating for its slick, made-for-multitasking design, gorgeous displays, solid battery life, and extremely reasonable price point. Note that it includes a built-in kickstand, a stylus, and a detachable keyboard — no need to purchase accessories separately.

The base configuration (our testing unit) comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, Intel Arc graphics, 16GB of memory, 1TB of storage, and dual 1920 x 1200 displays — and at $1,394.99, or $105 off its $1,499.99 MSRP, this is its best price on Amazon since launch. For comparison's sake, it's currently selling for $1,410.99 at Best Buy and full price on the Asus website.

For about $109 more, you can upgrade to a model with an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU, 32GB of RAM, and 2880 x 1800 displays.

Amazon has dropped a new Fire HD 8 tablet — and it's already 45% off for October Prime Day

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 04:54

UPDATE: Oct. 8, 2024, 5:00 a.m. EDT This story has been updated with current pricing and availability.

Amazon has released another wave of official offers for Prime Big Deal Days, its members-only "October Prime Day" sale (set for Oct. 8 and 9) — and among its selection of tablet deals is a heavily discounted new Fire HD 8.

Quietly announced in an Oct. 2 post on the About Amazon blog, the refreshed 8-inch tablet features more RAM and a better camera than the previous model from 2022. Amazon has also equipped it with several new generative AI features, which "all compatible Fire tablets" will start supporting later this month. It starts at $99.99 with 32GB of storage, a $30 drop from its predecessors' sticker price, but it's on sale for just $54.99 through the end of Prime Big Deal Days.

The new Fire HD 8 is one of nine Fire tablets that are currently sitting at all-time lows in the lead-up to the 48-hour savings event. That includes four of Amazon's flagship tablets and five models that are specially designed for kids. (These come with age-appropriate content, parental controls, a protective case, a two-year worry-free guarantee, and at least six months' worth of Amazon Kids+.)

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Amazon's October Prime Day sale: Official dates, the competition, and more

Elsewhere, we've also spotted record lows on two Apple iPads, including the new 13-inch, M4-powered iPad Pro. These deals aren't technically included in Amazon's formal pre-Prime Big Deal Days programming, but the size of their discounts makes them worth mentioning.

Amazon's live discounts across the Samsung Galaxy Tab line-up are far less exciting — none of them were close to their previous record lows at the time of writing — and there were zero Google Pixel tablets on sale there when we last checked. As such, we don't recommend buying any of those models at present, but we'll still be keeping a close eye on them: They'll probably get much cheaper once Prime Big Deal Days begins next week.

Below, we've gone into more detail on the early October Prime Day tablet deals that are actually worth it. Note: Deals marked with a 🔥 have dropped to an all-time low price.

The new Fire HD 8 has the same display, processor, 13-hour battery life, and storage options as the older model, but Amazon's added a gig of extra RAM for "enhanced performance while streaming, gaming, browsing, or downloading photos and videos." (Don't expect it to be super powerful, but more memory never anyone.) Its rear camera has also gotten a bump from 2MP to 5MP, which should translate to slightly better shots. On the software side, its newly added generative AI features include Writing Assist, Webpage Summaries, and a Wallpaper Creator.

No need to upgrade if you already own the previous model, but those in need of a new portable, affordable tablet should consider short-listing this guy. The 32GB base model is on sale for $54.99 through Oct. 9 (the second half of Prime Big Deal Days), which works out to a 45% savings.

The latest iPad Pro is a beefy tablet for creative professionals that's powered by the lightning-fast M4 chip, which Apple hasn't used in any MacBooks yet (though that's rumored to be changing later this fall). Mashable tech editor Kim Gedeon gave it a 4.5/5 rating, which nabbed it a Mashable Choice Award, praising its "power efficiency, striking [tandem OLED] display, and breakneck performance." Note that it lasted more than six hours longer than its rated battery life in our testing.

At $1,198, or $101 off, this is the 256GB base configuration's lowest price on Amazon since launch.

The best Chromebook deals available on October Prime Day aren't on Amazon

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 04:48

Let's get this out of the way first: Amazon isn't offering any good Chromebook deals in the lead-up to Prime Big Deal Days, its "October Prime Day" sale (set for Oct. 8 and 9). Not a single one.

In fact, the retail giant's laptop deals are currently scant across the board. A few configurations of the M3-powered Apple MacBook Pro have dipped to their previous all-time lows there. But aside from that, the one Windows model that Amazon previously featured in a "limited-time deal" ahead of the event has since returned to its full sticker price. It's slim pickings.

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Amazon's October Prime Day sale: Start time, the competition, and more

With that in mind, anyone hunting for a good deal on a Chromebook has two options at present. One, of course, is to simply wait for Prime Big Deal Days to start; Amazon could be reserving some doorbusters for the kickoff. For less patient shoppers, the other option is defecting to another retailer like Best Buy, or to OEMs like Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo, where Chromebook deals are more plentiful at the time of writing.

Keep in mind that these alternatives might also roll out better deals when Prime Big Deal Days goes live, in order to compete with it. (For its part, Best Buy has a 48-Hour Flash Sale planned for Oct. 8 and 9.) But if time is of the essence, keep reading: We're keeping a running list of the best early October Prime Day Chromebook deals across the web, none of which you'll see on Amazon right now.

Amazon is home to good MacBooks deals year-round (more so than any other kind of laptop), but its selection sees especially deep discounts during certain sitewide savings events. Next up is Prime Big Deal Days, the retailer's members-only "October Prime Day" sale on Oct. 8 and 9, which will likely bring dramatic price drops across Apple's lineup ahead of a possible M4 refresh.

In the lead-up to the event, things are panning out as expected: Amazon has discounted most MacBooks across the M2 and M3 generations, and two of our favorite models are currently sitting at record-low prices. That would be the M2 MacBook Air and the M3 MacBook Pro; we think they're the best budget MacBook and the best MacBook for video editing, respectively.

It's difficult to see these variants getting any cheaper once Prime Big Deal Days formally begins, but cautious shoppers may want to hold their purchase until then in the off-chance Amazon decides to drop its prices even further. At any rate, we'll be keeping an eye on them over the next few days while closely monitoring competing deals at other retailers. (For its part, Best Buy will be running a 48-Hour Flash Sale during Prime Big Deal Days.)

The 13-inch MacBook Air from mid-2022 is a Mashable Choice Award winner that combines "[rock]-solid battery life" with "a keyboard that’s to die for, and enough horsepower to handle everyday tasks with ease," wrote tech and games reporter Alex Perry. It's our current favorite "budget" MacBook, and it's now cheaper than ever before.

You can snag the base configuration with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for $749, or $250 off its $999 MSRP. If it sells out on Amazon, check Best Buy: It was matching the deal at the time of writing.

The latest 14-inch MacBook Pro features an M3 chip that supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing for rendering lifelike lighting, plus a bright 120Hz mini-LED display, tons of ports (including an SDXC card slot), and a battery that lasted over 16 hours per charge in our testing. It's another Mashable Choice Award winner.

All configurations of the 14-inch M3 Pro are now on sale at all-time lows on Amazon (including the base model, which is now just $1,299). However, we're partial to the bumped-up version with 16GB of memory and 1TB of SSD storage: That extra RAM is necessary if you're going to be using it for multitasking and/or creative work. Normally $1,999, it's now just $1,699 — a 15% savings. Note that it's technically $100 cheaper at Best Buy, but only for paid members of its My Best Buy program.

Amazon's Prime Day laptop deals are finally ramping up: Shop record lows on Apple, LG, and Acer

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 04:42

UPDATE: Oct. 8, 2024, 4:40 a.m. EDT This story has been updated with new deals and current availability.

The best October Prime Day laptop deals at a glance: Best MacBook deal Apple MacBook Air, 13-inch (M2, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $749 at Amazon (save $250) Get Deal Best Windows laptop deal LG gram 14 2in1 (Intel Core Ultra 5 125H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) $799.99 at Amazon (save $500 with Prime) Get Deal Best gaming laptop deal Acer Nitro 16 (AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) $734.99 at Amazon (save $265) Get Deal

Amazon isn't usually loaded with great laptop deals on any given day (especially compared to the competition), but things tend to pick up a bit during the retailer's major sitewide sales.

With Prime Big Deal Days starting — that would be Amazon's members-only "October Prime Day" sale, set for Oct. 8 and 9 — the Mashable Shopping team is on the lookout for the best, most worth-it discounts there starring Apple MacBooks, Windows PCs, Chromebooks, and beyond.

Amazon didn't release a ton of great laptop deals in the lead-up to the sale, but the floodgates are finally starting to crack open in the eleventh hour: Three Acer laptops and a pair of LG gram convertibles have fallen to all-time lows. Note that the latter are Prime exclusives; if you're not a member, you can get around the paywall by signing up for a free 30-day trial.

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Amazon's October Prime Day sale: Start time, the competition, and more

Amazon also has some MacBook Pros and Airs on sale separately from its pre-Prime Big Deal Days programming. That includes the 13-inch M2 Air and the 14-inch M3 Pro, two of our favorite MacBooks, which have fallen to their own record-low prices at the time of writing. They may not appear on the sale's official event page, but we encourage shoppers to consider these deals, too.

We'll couch these recs with a warning that anything on sale now could theoretically get even cheaper when Prime Big Deal Days officially starts at 3 a.m. ET Tuesday. (That's when we're expecting the bulk of Amazon's best laptop offers to arrive.) But if you need to upgrade ASAP and can't wait until then, these are great deals as things currently stand. Below, we go deeper on specs and pricing.

Note: Deals marked with a 🔥 have dropped to an all-time low price.

The previous-generation MacBook Air from mid-2022 earned a 4.6/5 rating from Tech and Games Reporter Alex Perry, who commended its "[rock]-solid battery life," "dreamy keyboard," and peppy M2 chip. It has "enough horsepower to handle everyday tasks with ease," he wrote. It's a Mashable Choice Award winner and the MacBook we recommend for shoppers on a budget — especially now.

It normally retails for $999, but Amazon has it on sale for just $749 (or $250 off) ahead of Prime Big Deal Days, which is its lowest price since launch. As far as we can tell, the only other time it's gotten that cheap was over Labor Day weekend at Best Buy, and it was limited to paid My Best Buy members.

Portability and versatility are the names of the game for this 14-inch hybrid laptop, which weighs about the same as a 13-inch M3 MacBook Air. This particular configuration packs a newer Intel Core Ultra 5 155H processor with 16GB of memory, which are solid specs for multitasking. It also comes with a compatible LG Stylus Pen for drawing and taking notes on its IPS touchscreen.

Amazon currently has it priced at $799.99 for Prime members, which is a whopping 38% off its $1,299.99 MSRP and its lowest price to date. (Before now, it's never dipped below $999.99.) For comparison's sake, it was stuck at full price on the LG website when we last checked.

The Nitro 16 is a big-screened budget gaming laptop that's equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS CPU from early 2023, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 graphics, a flashy RGB backlit keyboard, and a 165Hz display. Its measly 8GB of memory is a drawback, but that's totally workable if you only plan on playing lower-end games like Fortnite and Minecraft. (Otherwise, you can put your savings towards a memory upgrade.)

At $734.99, or 27% off, this is its own all-time low on Amazon. Meanwhile, Best Buy and the Acer website are still selling it for full price.

The best Fitbit deals this October Prime Day

UPDATE: Oct. 8, 2024, 4:15 a.m. EDT This article has been updated to reflect the best October Prime Day Fitbit deals available.

Prime Day part two, October Prime Day, Prime Big Deal Days, or whatever you choose to call it is here, but deals have been flooding in for a couple weeks. Amazon is well known for dropping deals in the days leading up to their big shopping events. One particular brand, however, chooses to wait until the official Prime Day kickoff to cut its prices: Fitbit.

While other fitness tracker and smartwatch deals are already pretty impressive, Fitbit cannot be bothered to give shoppers an early taste of Amazon Prime Day. The only Fitbit deals you'll find at Amazon ahead of the big day are from sketchy third-party sellers and we don't recommend grabbing those. Instead, we scoured the web for any reputable deals on Fitbit models we could find and came out with....two. But hey, two is better than none, right?

Here are the best (and only) early Prime Day Fitbit deals we could find. We'll be updating this list throughout the official Prime Big Deal Days shopping extravaganza, so check back if you don't see the model you're looking for just yet.

Check out our full review of the Fitbit Sense.

The Fitbit Sense, originally released in 2020, is built for wellness-focused users. The EDA Scan app detects electrodermal activity (aka a stress meter). The ECG app, which is only available in certain countries and intended for people who are 22 or older, checks heart rhythm for signs of atrial fibrillation, and the built-in GPS lets you track your runs without your phone. The battery lasts six days on a full charge, and the fast-charge function gives you a full day's worth of use after just 12 minutes of charging (up to 12 hours with GPS mode on). It's since been replaced by the Sense 2, but is still a pretty solid smartwatch — especially for this price. Save 44% ahead of Prime Big Deal Days at Woot!

Just released this past spring, the Fitbit Ace LTE by Google is a smartwatch built just for kids. It helps gamify getting active by encouraging and rewarding movement and play throughout the day. Plus, it swaps screen time for physical activity, which is certainly a plus. Parents can keep tabs on their little ones by calling, texting, and voice messaging, seeing real-time locations, controlling the contact list, and restricting game access during specific times (school, homework, etc.). It's regularly $229.95, but Woot! has it on sale for only $169.99. That's 26% in savings and the lowest price we've seen.

Or you might decide to get ahead of New Year's resolutions and start heading to the gym. Whatever you're planning, there are plenty of smartwatch and fitness tracker deals already available to help you get going — with brands like Apple, Garmin and Samsung running the show. Fitbit deals are currently MIA, but we're not surprised. The brand typically waits until closer to the official event to join the party, though a couple of Google Pixel deals have popped up already.

When a new generation makes its debut, we often see ultra-low prices on the previous one. Such is the case with the Galaxy Watch 6. With the arrival of the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra over the summer, the Watch 6 is now steadily sitting below $200. Ahead of Prime Big Deal Days, you can grab the 40mm version with Bluetooth for only $195.30, which is 35% in savings and a new record-low (by about $1). Only a year old, the sixth generation is still a very good smartwatch. It includes a nuanced breakdown of sleep habits, sleep coaching, personalized heart rate zones, irregular heart rate notifications, and a better battery life over its predecessor, which led Mashable's Alex Perry to dub it "the king of the Android smartwatch mountain."

Ideal for smaller wrists, the Garmin Venu 3S is about .2 inches smaller in diameter and .3 oz lighter than the standard Venu 3. It still offers the same advanced features, like a built-in speaker and microphone to take calls, the ability to store music, and an abundance of health and fitness tools and insights. The only real difference besides the size is that the 3S has a slightly shorter battery life (about 10 days in smartwatch mode versus the 3's 14 days), but it still blows the Apple Watch battery out of the water. It's usually $449.99, but you can save $50 ahead of the October Prime event and get it for only $399.99. That's just a few bucks away from its all-time low.

The Google Pixel Watch 3 just dropped in Aug., which makes this discount at Amazon ahead of Prime Big Deal Days its biggest one yet. This is the first Pixel Watch to offer a larger size case, which Mashable Tech Editor Kim Gedeon says is "a visual stunner." Its battery life largely remains the same as its predecessor, but the Pixel Watch 3's dynamic refresh rate might allow you to squeeze out a little more. It also features a whole lot of software upgrades, including enhanced running features, AI-driven form tracking, a new Morning Brief feature via Fitbit, and updated media controls.

Regardless of the colorway you choose, you'll get a discount between 10% and 22% off. For instance, the stealth and brushed titanium models are 22% off, coming in at $349 (down from $449). The gold and rose gold models, on the other end of the price spectrum, are $449 after a 10% discount. The third-generation ring is a low-profile fitness tracker that offers in-depth info about sleep, workouts, recovery, mindfulness, and more through a variety of sensors, though sleep tracking is truly where it shines.

We're probably due for a new iPad mini soon, but this 2021 model still holds up as a great portable option from Apple. With the M4 Pro line just released this year, Apple is still struggling to get its tablets to be legitimate laptop replacements for most people. In the case that you're mainly using a tablet to watch videos, read books, and play games, the iPad mini is an excellent choice. At $379.99, it's back to the record-low price we saw it hit last month, making it one of the best iPad deals to grab ahead of Prime Big Deal Days.

If you still feel a little overwhelmed by the fact that October Prime Day (aka Prime Big Deal Days) exists, and that the holiday shopping season starts in October, we see you and we understand.

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Amazon's October Prime Day sale: Official dates, the competition, and more

We will say, though, that the major advantage of having a few sitewide shopping events pre-November and not post-Thanksgiving is that you can stock up on any holiday travel essentials like Apple AirTags. Bluetooth trackers may not feel like an essential, but finding yourself the last person standing at baggage claim can certainly make you change your tune.

AirTags are especially great for Apple users, as they're easy to set up, and give you more range thanks to the way the tracker uses any Apple device with Find My to calibrate its location, even when it's far away from your particular device.

SEE ALSO: Amazon just dropped a new Fire HD 8 tablet — and it's already 45% off for October Prime Day

We do want to note there many people had concerns that these devices could easily (and quietly) track people without their knowledge, but Apple has worked with Google to make sure that anyone — AirTag user or not — is notified via their device that an unrecognized AirTag is traveling with them.

Obviously, these safety concerns aren't limited to just AirTag users, but we always think it's best to go in with as much knowledge about a product as possible before buying. With that said, here are the best AirTag deals live ahead of Prime Big Deal Days.

Best AirTags deal overall Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple AirTags (4-pack) $79.99 at Best Buy

While typically Amazon has the best deals ahead of their sale, they actually sold out of this four-pack of AirTags. They had it priced at $79.98, but if paying one cent more isn't a dealbreaker for you, Best Buy still has the set in stock. The price of $79.99 puts each AirTag at about $20, netting you about $5 in savings per AirTag if you were to buy them individually instead. Plus, having multiple AirTags gives you the flexibility to use them on your luggage, your keys, your pets — basically, your options open up.

Best individual AirTag deal Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Apple AirTag $24.99 at Amazon

You might already own several AirTags and just want one more, or you might have never owned a Bluetooth tracker before and want to try one out before you invest in four of them. Whatever your reason, $5 off an AirTag is a nice bonus, if not a huge markdown. We typically don't see them fall much lower than $25, even in the midst of shopping holidays, so buying one now before the Prime Day madness begins isn't a bad idea.

AirPods deals have landed for October Prime Day, here's what's on sale

Apple's AirPods are notoriously expensive — but they're popular for a reason. If you want to see what all the fuss is about without (completely) breaking the bank, shopping events like Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days can be a great time to pick up a pair of the headphones.

Though the October Prime-member exclusive sale doesn't officially kick off until Tuesday, Oct. 8, the AirPod deals are already rolling in — even on the newly released AirPods 4.

SEE ALSO: Everything you need to know about Amazon's October Prime Day sale: Official dates, the competition, and more

Last week, we saw deals on the AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with noise cancellation that have since jumped back up in price. (The Pros drop to $199 so often that we don't really consider that a decent deal.) It's not uncommon to see products hit their full prices ahead of a sitewide sale, so with Prime Big Deal Days just seven days away, this isn't unexpected.

Even so, there are still savings to be had, if sparse. The AirPods Max are $120 off, putting them down at $429. It's not their lowest price ever — that honor would go to their $395 price tag we saw them hit earlier this summer — but if you really don't want to wait until Prime Day, this is a decent price to grab them at. If you don't need noise-cancelling, you can also save $10 on the newly released AirPods 4.

Below, you'll find our complete list of the best AirPod deals ahead of Prime Day. For folks who aren't married to the fruit brand, you'll also find plenty of more deals on headphones ahead of Prime Day here.

There are two differences between the Lightning port AirPods Max from 2020 and the USB-C AirPods Max from 2024 — not two main differences, but two differences, period. One, they have different charging ports. Two, they have different color ways. Performance wise, you'll be enjoying the same excellent active noise cancellation and sound profile on this 2020 model that you would on the new model. The third difference, at the time of writing, is that you can grab the AirPods Max for $120 off at just $429 (if you're cool with the pink colorway), while the lowest price on the USB-C Max headphones is $540.99, an $8 markdown on their $549 price tag.

Prime Big Deal Days (aka Prime Day part two) is back again, officially kicking off on Oct. 8. As in years past, Amazon came through with early price drops on major categories, including Apple Watches, weeks ahead of the big day.

With the sale just hours away, we're seeing price cuts on the Series 9, Ultra 2, and even the brand-new Series 10. Last week, we did see a nice $30 markdown on the 42mm Series 10, but we're expecting that we might have to wait until Prime Day officially starts to see a price drop that big again. In the meantime, the $100 price cut on the Series 9 watches is welcome, and we'll likely see them get phased out after this fall shopping season, making it a good time to pick one up.

We'll be updating this page throughout the shopping event, so be sure to check back if you're interested in grabbing the best Apple Watch deals of October's Prime Day. And in the meantime, check out our full list of early Prime Day deals (and even more Apple deals).

Check out our full review of the Apple Watch Series 9.

At just one year old, the Series 9 is hardly outdated. It comes with the same 18 hours of battery life as the Series 10 and many of the same fitness features. While you'll get a slightly larger display with the newer Apple Watch and a sleep apnea sensor, you'll save $100 on the Series 9 because it's the "old" Apple Watch. Both watches have the same 2,000-nit max brightness, which Mashable Senior Editor Stan Schroeder said was one of the best reasons to grab the watch. Overall, if you've never bought into the Apple Watch ecosystem and want to save some cash, this Series 9 deal is a decent bang for your buck.

Hurricane Milton is almost here. Here's how to get help evacuating.

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 04:00

Hurricane Milton is fast approaching Florida, with the historic storm expected to make landfall on Wednesday. If you are in its path, you need to leave immediately.

Speaking to CNN, Tampa mayor Jane Castor urged people in the evacuation zones to get out, warning that it won't be possible to simply ride out Hurricane Milton.

"There's never been one like this," said Castor. "This is literally catastrophic, and I can say without any dramatisation whatsoever [that] if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you're going to die."

SEE ALSO: Space footage shows Hurricane Milton explode into monster storm Credit: National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center

While it may be tempting to stay in your home, you need to get out right now. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Hurricane Milton is on track to become the worst storm to hit the Tampa area in over 100 years, and is unlike any previous storms residents may have weathered. Milton "explosively" intensified from Category 1 to 5 in less than 24 hours, becoming the second fastest hurricane to ever do so, hitting wind speeds of 180 mph

Hurricane Milton's storm surge is expected to reach over 10ft in some areas as well. In comparison, last month's Hurricane Helene reached over 6ft and incurred a confirmed death toll of over 200, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since Katrina killed over 1,800 people in 2005.

The NWS has warned that you should plan to be in a safe place outside the evacuation zones by Tuesday night. You may not even have to travel very far, with the difference of just a few dozen miles potentially enough to save your life. You should prepare to be more patient than usual on the roads though, with traffic more congested than usual due to hordes of people trying to leave the area. Florida has suspended road tolls and opened roadway shoulders to assist the evacuation.

"HEED EVACUATION ORDERS," NWS posted to X on Monday night (emphasis original). "RUN FROM THE WATER, HIDE FROM THE WIND."

Unfortunately, evacuating is much more difficult for people who are older or have mobility issues. The Tampa Bay Times reports that many of those killed by Hurricane Helene were contending with such challenges, and ultimately did not leave the mandatory evacuation zones.

How to get help evacuating ahead of Hurricane Milton Credit: National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) has set up a helpline for anyone who needs evacuation assistance. Simply call 800-729-3413 at any time between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Note that this is a separate service from the State Assistance Information Line (SAIL), which has also been activated and is available 24/7. SAIL provides information such as road closures, available shelters, and what you should do to prepare, and is contactable on 1-800-342-3557.

A free shuttle and shelter system is running to help people in some areas which have been ordered to evacuate. Running on Tuesday, the shuttle service will cover Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough Counties, and requires no reservation. Its schedule can currently be found on the FDEM website.

FDEM has partnered with Uber to provide free rides for people travelling to and from storm shelters in evacuating counties as well. To use this service, just add promo code "MILTONRELIEF" in your Uber app's Wallet.

As of writing, mandatory evacuation orders are in place in Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Volusia Counties, with Hernando County expected to join that list on Tuesday morning. Voluntary evacuation orders have been issued for low-lying areas and mobile homes in Glades and Okeechobee Counties, while those in Sarasota County have been instructed to implement their storm plan.

Those in Florida should refer to their local officials for more evacuation information.

A list of storm shelters and whether they're open can be found on the FDEM website. This includes special needs shelters which are better able to care for people with health conditions.

"This will be one of the largest evacuations along our state’s west coast," the Saratosa County Government wrote in a Facebook post on Monday. "Check on your neighbor — work together to prepare."

Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days event is back. Scheduled a little under three months after the retail giant's flagship summer Prime Day sale, this 48-hour "October Prime Day" will present shoppers with an opportunity to get an extra-early start on their holiday shopping before the chaos of Black Friday.

Amazon started rolling out early Prime Big Deal Days doorbusters in mid-September, and we'll be keeping track of them right here in the lead-up to its official start.

When is October Prime Day?

Prime Big Deal Days will run from Tuesday, Oct. 8 (starting at 3 a.m. ET) through Wednesday, Oct. 9 this year. Many of the sale's best deals won't go live until that exact start time, but again, certain doorbusters are up for grabs already — they're basically appetizers for the main event.

What deals will we see during the sale?

Amazon previewed a selection of its top Prime Big Deal Days deals in a press release Thursday (Oct. 3), noting that new offers will drop "as often as every five minutes during select periods throughout the event." These offers include "some of its lowest prices of the year so far" on products from brands like Dyson and Lego (to the tune of up to 40 and 30 percent off, respectively), plus hefty discounts across the following categories:

Once Prime Big Deal Days begins, we'll also be keeping an especially close eye on tech from big-leaguers like Apple, iRobot, and Samsung. Based on our experience covering past Prime events, we expect many of their products to fall to new or year-round lows on Amazon during the event.

As a reminder, you don't need to buy something just because it's on sale. For more tips on how to shop smart, check out Mashable's guides to finding the best deals and what not to buy.

What are the best October Prime Day deals that are already live?

So far, Amazon is reserving most of the best deals for itself: Select devices across its Echo, Fire, Kindle, Blink, and eero brands are on sale for up to 58% off ahead of Prime Big Deal Days. (For the record, its Blink home security bundles and dirt-cheap Fire tablets feel the most worth-it at this point.)

These deals were open to all shoppers at the time of writing, but we've spotted some others that are Team Prime exclusives. Members can snag four free months of Amazon Music Unlimited, three free months of Kindle Unlimited, and a $10 discount on one GrubHub order of $15 or more; don't forget to use the coupon code PRIME10 at checkout.

Beyond that, we've seen a slew of TVs, laptops, tablets, robot vacuums, headphones, and fitness trackers go on sale on Amazon ahead of Prime Big Deal Days. We're keeping a running list of the best early deals below — just keep in mind that things can (and probably will) get cheaper once the event formally begins.

"With a super bright mini-LED display, a good amount of useful, creative-friendly ports, gorgeous-sounding speakers, and an M3 chip that supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, the current-gen MacBook Pro is our No. 1 laptop for photo and video editing (regardless of operating system). It's also the longest-lasting MacBook we've tested to date, clocking in at over 16 hours in our battery life test. It's another Mashable Choice Award winner that earned a 4.5/5 rating.

We highly recommend bumping up to the 1TB variant with 16GB of memory, which is currently marked down to $1,699 (down $300 from $1,999), but the base configuration with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is also on sale for $1,299 (down $300 from $1,599). As Amazon's most basic in-house Fire TV, the 4-Series would be best suited for people who aren't super picky about saturation or brightness levels as long as it's a step up from their old LED TV — and this definitely will be. With the intuitive Fire TV platform built-in, the 4-Series can access all of your favorite streaming apps, which you can arrange in whatever layout makes sense to you." — Leah Stodart, Senior Shopping Reporter

Having tested the Amazon Fire Stick TV, set-up is easy, as simple as plugging it into an HDMI port in the back of your TV.
