Segway Xyber is a wickedly quick e-bike

Mashable - Wed, 01/08/2025 - 08:55

Segway brought some serious e-power to this year's CES.

The company launched several new products at CES 2025, all of them electric powered, including e-bikes, scooters, and a lawnmower.

The one that caught our eye is the Segway Xyber. a rugged-looking e-bike that looks like a serious racing machine, with massive tires, hydraulic brakes, and an imposing suspension system.

It looks fast, and it is. In Race Mode, it goes from 0 to 20 miles per hour in just 2.7 seconds, powered by Segway's 175Nm, 6,000 watt direct-drive motor. It's paired with a hefty, 2,880Wh dual-battery system, which should be enough for 112 miles of range. But it is, in fact, an e-bicycle, because it has pedals and 12-levels of pedal assistance. You can, however, completely rest your feet and operate it in throttle-only mode.

That's one mean-looking electric machine. Credit: Segway

Other features include hydraulically damped front and rear suspension (with 110mm and 100mm of travel, respectively), Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, and those 20 x 5.0-inch tires with flat-resistant inserts.

SEE ALSO: CES 2025 highlights: What we've seen so far

The Xyber might not be road-legal in all jurisdictions (at least not without a permit), but Segway says a second version is coming, and that one will conform to class 2 e-bike requirements. It should launch in late spring or early summer of 2025.

If you're up for something more...well, bicycley, Segway also brought the Segway Xafari to Las Vegas. It's described as an "all-terrain electric cruiser," and it has 88 miles of range thanks to the included 936Wh battery. Other features of note are the dual suspension (80mm of travel in the front, 70mm in the rear), and 26 x 3.0-inch all-terrain tires.

Segway Xafari is more of a commuter, but it's also pretty smart. Credit: Segway

Both bikes come with Segway's Intelligent Ride System, which is a suite of smart tech features such as Apple Find My support, remote monitoring via GPS, real-time health and fitness data syncing, and more. Both bikes have a multi-color, high-res (so says Segway, we don't have the exact resolution figures), 2.4-inch smart TFT display.

Now, for the prices. The Segway Xyber will cost $2,999.99), while the Xafari will retail for $2,399.99) when they hit the market, and pre-orders are open now at store.segway.com.

At CES 2025, Segway also brought seven new electric scooters. Perhaps the most interesting among the bunch is the top-of-the-line Segway Ninebot Max G3. It boasts a 28mph top speed, a 50-mile range, and a 0-15 mile acceleration of 2.4 seconds. Dual hydraulic shock absorbers are here to smooth out the road bumps, and most of Segway's Intelligent Ride System features are here, including a multi-function TFT display. Price is unknown at this time, and availability starts in the spring of 2025.

Another interesting new addition to Segway's e-scooter lineup is the GT3 Pro, which can go from 0 to 30mph in 3.9 seconds in Ultra Boost Mode, with a top speed of 49.7 miles per hour, and a range of up to 86 miles. It's powered by dual 3,500 watt motors, and has a massive, 2,160mAh battery. Other features of note include the dual-piston, hydraulic disc breaks, a dual coil-suspension, and 11-inch, self-healing tires. We also don't know the price for the GT3 Pro, but we do know it will launch in the spring.

The company also refreshed its lineup with the F3 and F3 Pro commuters, and the ER and E3 Pro scooters, with focus on portability. All of the new scooters will be available in the spring or summer of 2025.

It even trims the edges! Credit: Segway

Finally, Segway also launched the Segway Navimow X3, a robotic lawn mower which can cover up to 5,000 square meters of lawn in 24 hours. It can conquer slopes up to 27 degrees, and can also trim your lawn's edges so you can have a nice lawn without putting in nearly any work.

Netflixs Mo returns for Season 2 with Mo stuck across the border

Mashable - Wed, 01/08/2025 - 08:00

One of the most important TV shows of 2022, comedian Mo Amer's lauded Netflix series Mo returns for a second season at the end of January.

Created by Amer with Ramy Youssef, and directed by Solvan "Slick" Naim, Season 1 focused on protagonist Mo Najjar (played by Amer), a Palestinian refugee living in Houston with his family, awaiting the result of his asylum case.

Season 2 picks up with Mo, who's been stranded in Mexico for six months, without a passport and a way to get back to his family in the United States. Though he's continually questioned over his yearning to cross the border, Mo keeps on keeping on, finding levity even after learning that his girlfriend Maria (Teresa Ruiz) has started dating someone else, and when he's threatened with deportation after a border crossing goes awry.

This season, Farah Bsieso returns as Yusra, Mo's mother, alongside Omar Elba as Sameer, Mo's brother, and Hannibal Buress, Liza Koshy, Matt Rife, Ralph Barbosa, and Slim Thug join the cast in guest roles.

More timely than ever, Mo's return examines his experiences as a Palestinian refugee, the hypocrisies of the U.S. immigration system, and the institutional dehumanisation of people just trying to achieve citizenship — all while being a particularly hilarious, poignant, superbly written comedy show about a man just trying to get by.

Mo Season 2 is streaming on Netflix from Jan 30.

Seth Meyers has strong words for Trump over his threat to take Greenland

Mashable - Wed, 01/08/2025 - 07:06

Donald Trump wants to go after Greenland, and Seth Meyers has a message for him.

"I'd like to say something to Donald Trump about his threat to take Greenland by military force that might take some of our viewers by surprise," says Meyers in the Late Night clip above, before issue the incoming President with a direct challenge: "Do it! Do it, you coward! Go get Greenland, you coward! Fix my shower and get me Greenland, or don't show me your face ever again! I'm calling your bluff, bro. Stop making these crazy promises. Do it. I want it. Go get it. Why won't you get it, you afraid of Denmark, bro? You starting to remember they've got those big ass dogs?"

Meyers goes on to say that this is how he knows Trump isn't going to take on China. "He talked a big game but now he's backing down and threatening Greenland instead. He's going to keep downgrading to smaller and smaller countries. Russia's going to do whatever it wants while he, like, threatens Peru."

Ankers solar beach umbrella is a must have for the ultimate geek summer

Mashable - Wed, 01/08/2025 - 06:10

Anker brought a solar beach umbrella to CES 2025, making us instantly want something we never knew existed before: A solar beach umbrella.

Yes, it's a large parasol that protects you from sunlight, while at the same time charging a mobile (well, sort of) electric cooler with solar panels. The umbrella can be collapsed just like any beach umbrella, as the solar panels on top are flexible. The cooler on the bottom packs a detachable 288Wh battery, and has small wheels for lugging around easily, though we don't advise trying to carry this thing to a remote beach with no car access.

And it's not just regular panels Anker is using here. The company says it's using perovskite solar cells, which should offer a 30 percent better performance than the typically used silicon cells. In reality, you can expect solar power of up to 100W total.

What's important is that you can bring a number of battery-powered gadgets to the beach and charge them with Anker's solar umbrella, without worrying you'll run out of power (OK, maybe don't try Bitcoin mining).

Oh, and if it suddenly starts raining, this thing will also protect you from the rain, as it has an IP67 dust- and water-resistance rating.

Unfortunately, Anker didn't share the price for the Solix Solar Beach Umbrella. The only thing we know is (a vague) availability date, as the device should become available either in the spring or summer of 2025.

Do you really need that umbrella, though? Credit: Anker

The cooler is called the Solix EverFrost Electric Cooler, and can be bought on its own, without the solar umbrella. It's available in three capacities: 23L, 40L, and 58L, in case you really need to cool down a lot of booze refreshing drinks. Its battery should provide 52 hours on one charge, but you can also buy more batteries and swap them out if you need more power (and if you haven't opted for the solar umbrella). The Solix EverFrost Electric Cooler goes on sale on February 21, starting at $699.

The Daily Show has a lot to say about Trumps bonkers Canada and Greenland plans

Mashable - Wed, 01/08/2025 - 05:04

"We have been so concerned about all the scary things Trump's gonna do that we forgot he's also gonna do some really stupid things."

This is Daily Show host Desi Lydic's lead in to Trump's recent foreign policy comments, which seems to largely consist of a list of places that he wants to become part of the U.S.

In the footage above Lydic responds to Trump's suggestion Canada merge with the US ("Canada can't become part of America, that's the country I pretend to be from when I'm travelling abroad!"), taking over the Panama Canal ("Because why stop at just controlling birth canals") and saying the US needs Greenland for national security.

"Of course we do! Greenland is vital for our national security," Lydic said. "It's the only way to stop Santa Claus from waltzing on down from the North Pole and ****ing our wives."

NASA asked for cheaper ways to get Mars samples. It had one all along.

Mashable - Wed, 01/08/2025 - 05:00

NASA will investigate two new approaches to bring its Mars samples to Earth through a mission proposal that is less expensive and technically complicated.

The space agency will flesh out options that could either involve using a commercial lander, possibly supplied by SpaceX or Blue Origin, to get to the surface of the Red Planet, or incorporate the tried-and-true sky crane, the landing system that brought the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers to the Martian surface in the first place.

Either change in the mission's design could reduce the estimated $11 billion cost to under $8 billion, said administrator Bill Nelson, who will be leaving his post when former President Donald Trump is inaugurated again later this month. These options could also shorten the timeline to bring the samples home by one to five years, making the earliest possible touchdown in 2035, he said.

"The very reason that we pulled the plug was this thing had gotten out of control," Nelson said. "What our wizards at NASA have figured out is that they've come up now with a solution to get the successful outcome we want, and that is, we want to return 30 titanium tubes as soon as possible at the cheapest price."

NASA plans to finalize the mission design in the second half of 2026.

Recent exceptional rock discoveries have only mounted pressure on NASA to solve the problems facing its Mars Sample Return mission, its plan to fly bits of rock, dust, and air collected by Perseverance back to Earth.

The mission has been in limbo since a review found it would cost upward of $11 billion and take nearly two decades to achieve. NASA engaged the greater aerospace industry for input on how to wrangle in spending and development last year. Several companies suggested a variety of ideas, which Mashable reported, including repurposing Artemis moon landers and rethinking the last leg of the journey.

Mashable's review of the proposal summaries in August 2024 showed many of the ideas focused on the Mars Ascent Vehicle, the rocket that would blast the samples off Mars and into space — a sign that insiders had identified the MAV as a key sticking point.

This mission would mark humanity's first attempt at launching off another planet. Aerojet Rocketdyne, Whittinghill Aerospace, and Northrop Grumman's proposals all pitched finding ways to make that rocket — and the lander bringing it down to the surface — lighter and smaller. Aerojet Rocketdyne went a step farther, urging NASA to reduce the mass of the Mars rocket to reuse its sky crane

A Mars rover descends to the surface of the planet with the help of the sky crane system. Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech illustration

For both new approaches, the mission’s landing system would carry a smaller version of the MAV. The platform’s solar panels would be swapped for a radioisotope power system that can provide power and heat through the dust storm season.

NASA officials struggled to articulate Tuesday why the sky crane hadn't been integrated into the mission's architecture from the start.

"Why, when this was originally being designed, was it being designed with a much larger lander so they could not employ the already existing and successful sky crane?" Nelson asked rhetorically. "Of course, if you build a bigger and better mouse trap, it's going to be more complicated and it's going to get more costly."

Since landing on Mars in 2021, Perseverance has filled sample tubes with rocks and dirt. NASA's goal has been to retrieve at least some of them and get them to Earth in the 2030s.

To do that, the agency planned for the rover to deliver the samples to a robotic lander equipped with a rocket. If the rover couldn't make the drive, drones similar to the recently deceased Ingenuity helicopter would pick them up and fly them to a lander. Once the tubes were in space, an orbiter built by the European Space Agency would bring them some 140 million miles back to Earth.

Over the summer, Perseverance discovered a spotted rock with the most compelling signs of ancient Martian life yet, though a sample would need to be shipped back to Earth for confirmation. Casey Dreier, senior space policy adviser for The Planetary Society, told Mashable last year he hopes the recent accomplishments on Mars will galvanize the political support to bring samples home.

"It's kind of a reminder that no one is going to care if it costs $6 billion or $11 billion if we discover evidence of life beyond Earth for the first time in human history," he said then.

Nelson told reporters Tuesday it will be up to the Trump administration to make the final decision on the path forward for the sample return mission. NASA will spend the next year working on engineering plans for either new approach. When asked if Nelson had an idea of whether the new administration wants to continue the mission, he said he didn't know.

"I can't imagine that they don't," he said. "I don't think we want the only sample return coming back on a Chinese spacecraft."

Nvidia vs. AMD: Putting the GPU giants side-by-side

The most anticipated keynote of CES 2025 came from Nvidia, where the brand announced its highly anticipated GeForce RTX 50 series. However, Nvidia isn't alone in the GPU market. AMD, with its Radeon series of graphics cards, gives Nvidia a run for its money. While AMD didn't join Nvidia in making a GPU announcement at CES, instead focusing on its Ryzen CPUs, the two giants dominate the graphics field.

Whether you're browsing gaming laptops and PCs, or are hoping to build your own, you need to get familiar with GPUs, specifically the ones from Nvidia and AMD. As the leaders in the market, you don't need to look further than these two, but which one is better? Well, the answer isn't that simple.

Here's what you need to know about AMD and Nvidia when putting the brands head to head.

AMD vs. Nvidia: Price

On price alone, AMD has a leg up on Nvidia. AMD offers more affordable graphics card options, focusing on the budget and midrange options. AMD's flagship GPUs, the AMD Radeon RX 70 series, start as low as $269.99, with the upper range peaking at $999.

Meanwhile, Nvidia's existing GeForce 40 series starts at $399.99 with the GeForce RTX 4060 TI, while its most advanced unit, the GeForce RTX 4090, starts at $1,599. However, the 40 series is old news at CES 2025, as the Nvidia 50 series, coming Jan. 30 will range in price from $549 to $1,999.

So if you're shopping on price alone, AMD is going to be the most affordable option. However, it's important to note that AMD has reportedly stopped producing some of its Radeon RX series to make way for the RNDA 4 GPUs. Based on AMDs historical prices, we still expect the latest GPUs to fall below Nvidia's prices.

AMD vs. Nvidia: Performance

The competition gets tougher when considering the performance of AMD and Nvidia GPUs. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 is regarded as the best GPU on the market, beating out most of AMD's units. Not only is the 4090 exceptional for 4K gaming, it's the best option if you plan on creating games or working with AI. The 4090 is soon to be replaced by the 5090, which is built with and for AI, enhancing graphics for superior clarity and realistic dimensions.

Generally, Nvidia is going to offer better ray tracing, the mechanic that simulates lights, creating those realistic displays that the brand is known for. However, when you're not looking at the high-end GPUs from each brand, AMD can compete when you get into midrange and budget options. For example, the midrange AMD Radeon 7700 XT can easily compete with the Nvidia GeForce 4060.

It should be noted that our favorite gaming laptop, the Alienware m16, is loaded with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. Plus, Alienware is doubling down on Nvidia's new 50 series, as its Area-51 line will come loaded with the new graphics cards.

Alienware m16 laptop $1,349.99 at Dell
Shop Now AMD vs. Nvidia: Beyond gaming

Most of the time, we're discussing GPUs in terms of gaming and how the processors render games. However, GPUs are crucial outside of this realm. AMD keeps its priorities focused on gaming, updating its technology to compete in the growing market of 4K gaming. Its GPUs are generally more user-friendly, not requiring its own software to be exclusively used on the cards — you can even use AMD software on Nvidia graphic cards.

However, if you're building a computer for more than just gaming, planning on doing some heavy-duty video editing, or working with AI, Nvidia is going to be the better choice as its GPUs are already incorporating AI into its devices. The Nvidia GeForce 50 series comes with the Nvidia Studio, a program to assist in video editing, 3D rendering, and graphic design, maximizing your graphics beyond just gaming.

AMD vs. Nvidia: Which is better?

There really isn't a definitive answer on which GPU maker is superior. The answer is far more nuanced and depends on user needs — and budget.

If you're just getting started, playing around with building your first PC, AMD is the most accessible GPU. Budget-wise, it can't be beat, and its midrange options remain friendly on your wallet while managing to compete with Nvidia's performance. However, it should be noted that AMD GPUs seem to be taking a backseat with the brand. The Radeon series is currently out of stock, and we're waiting to hear more on the brand's new AMD line-up.

But for the more experienced users, investing in Nvidia's GPUs is a worthwhile endeavor. If you plan on working on massive tasks from video game creation to AI, the Nvidia graphics cards are built to handle these jobs, and while you're going to pay nearly $2,000 for a GPU, you are getting the best the market has to offer.

For the latest tech, Nvidia's GeForce 50 series is coming on Jan. 30, and while it's currently unavailable for preorder, you can shop the 40 series now.

A film about the selection of a new pope hardly sounds like an exciting premise. And yet, Conclave is one of the best movies of 2024. Directed by Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) and set amid the halls of the Vatican, the psychological thriller is now a Golden Globe winner and is expected to score some Oscar nods.

Two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes leads the star-studded cast, which includes Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes. As Mashable's film editor, Kristy Puchko, writes in her review, "These talents are so rightfully heralded for their stirring gravitas that what they're doing on-screen together is almost beside the point. However, the secrets at the center of this Vatican-set tale are rich with intrigue, sharp humor, and provocative plot twists."

Take a peek at one of the Catholic church's most secretive traditions and see what all the fuss is about with Conclave, which is now streaming. Here's everything you need to know to watch it at home.

What is Conclave about?

Based on Robert Harris's bestselling novel of the same name, Conclave follows Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes), the Dean of the College of Cardinals, as he oversees one of the world's most secretive and ancient events: the selection of the next pope. Within the sacred halls of the Vatican, the Catholic church's most respected leaders gather for a series of secret votes. Cardinal Lawrence's job is to keep things running smoothly and with dignity, but as shocking details about his brethren come to light, this proves much more challenging than you could imagine.

Check out the full trailer for a glimpse behind the velvet curtain:

Is Conclave worth watching?

Currently holding a 93 percent critic rating and 86 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it goes without saying that Conclave is a hit. It may not hold the box office numbers of major motion pictures at $60.5 million, but it certainly made its mark in the indie world.

Puchko praised the film in her TIFF review as a "sophisticated and sharply enthralling thriller" and it made our list of the top 25 best films of 2024. "This is a movie that understands the complications of Catholicism, where reason collides with belief and human nature with divinity," she writes in her review.
