DeepSeek, a Chinese AI chatbot similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, is the most downloaded free app in the U.S. — but its swift rise to the top of the app store charts has raised potent privacy concerns at a time when the U.S. is banning TikTok over its ties to the Chinese government.
Like most apps, DeepSeek requires you to agree to its privacy policy when you sign up to access it — but you probably don't read it.
SEE ALSO: What AI experts are saying about DeepSeek R1In summary, "DeepSeek’s privacy policy, which can be found in English, makes it clear: user data, including conversations and generated responses, is stored on servers in China," Adrianus Warmenhoven, a cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, said in a statement. "This raises concerns because of data collection outlined — ranging from user-shared information to data from external sources — which falls under the potential risks associated with storing such data in a jurisdiction with different privacy and security standards."
Here's the TL;DR from DeepSeek's privacy policy:It collects "Information You Provide"
Profile information like date of birth, username, email address, telephone number, password
The text, audio, prompt, feedback, chat history, uploaded files, and other content you provide to DeepSeek
Information when you contact them, like proof of identity or age and feedback or inquiries
It collects "Automatically Collected Information"
Internet and other network activity information like your IP address, device identifier, and cookies
Technical information like your device model, operating system, keystroke patterns or rhythms, IP address, system language, diagnostic and performance information, and an automatically assigned device ID and user ID
Usage information like the features you use
Payment information, which is self-explanatory
It collects "Information from Other Sources"
Log-in, sign-up, or linked services and accounts, like if you sign up using Google or Apple
Advertising measurement and other partners share user information with DeepSeek, such as what you've bought at their stores
DeepSeek's privacy policy states that it collects "keystroke patterns or rhythms," which might seem unusual but not completely uncommon. For instance, TikTok collects the same information, while Instagram does not.
DeepSeek didn't immediately respond to a request for clarification from Mashable, but there's a bit unknown regarding its keystroke data collection. We don't know what DeepSeek will do with the information. For its part, TikTok has said that collecting "keystroke patterns or rhythms" specifically refers to the timing of when keys are pressed — not the specific keys that are pressed. This creates a form of biometric identification that makes one user different from another. TikTok told Snopes that this practice is "fundamentally" different from keylogging, a type of monitoring originally developed in the mid-1970s by the Soviet Union that's still used today by hundreds of popular sites.
SEE ALSO: Could Trump ban DeepSeek? What the TikTok ban saga tells us.Nicky Watson, the co-founder and chief architect of consent management platform Syrenis, told Mashable that "the biometrics space is growing rapidly, and the accuracy [at which] it can verify identities is unmatched."
"However, with more companies collecting biometrics, a whole new set of data privacy and security risks need to be addressed, including security breaches, identity theft, impersonation, and fraud. Biometrics' inability to be revoked or reset, unlike compromised passwords, makes it a much higher-stakes form of identification," Watson said.
What does DeepSeek do with my data?It uses all this information for various purposes, like ensuring it sends users relevant advertising and notifying them about changes to its services, which is pretty typical. But it will also "comply with our legal obligations, or as necessary to perform tasks in the public interest, or to protect the vital interests of our users and other people." Moreover, its "corporate group" can access its data and share information with law enforcement agencies.
Many companies include that blanket statement in their privacy policies, but DeepSeek's data is stored "in secure servers located in the People's Republic of China." China has some notable legal requirements under its cybersecurity and privacy laws, including laws that demand tech companies cooperate with national intelligence efforts. This, combined with the current TikTok ban, leads to propaganda fears. For example, you can't ask DeepSeek questions about the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
SEE ALSO: DeepSeek AI: What you need to know about the ChatGPT rival"DeepSeek’s privacy policy openly states that the wide array of user data they collect goes to servers in China," Watson said. "This alone raises big questions about how that data could be used beyond just running the app. It’s so easy to get swept up in the hype of a new trending AI tool and accept the terms of use without thinking twice, but this privacy policy should make users stop and ask: Am I giving away private details like my location, browsing activity, or even personal messages without realizing it?"
WIRED reviewed the website's activity and found that DeepSeek sends data to the Chinese tech giant Baidu and the Chinese internet infrastructure firm Volces. And, as WIRED pointed out, the policy suggests that DeepSeek might also use user prompts to develop new models.
Why should an average user be concerned? It's easy to ignore the importance of data security. At its core, reading through the fine print of privacy terms and conditions can be remarkably boring, which is precisely what makes it so dangerous. DeepSeek is subject to government access under China's cybersecurity laws, which mandate that companies provide access whenever the Chinese government demands it. We don't know how many AI models are trained or how they operate, and that's concerning, too, especially if your data could be misused or maliciously exploited.
SEE ALSO: Apple opens up about Siri privacy in wake of lawsuitPlus, you don't want your identity stolen. You don't want your bank account information in the wrong hands. Let's say you give an abundant amount of personal information to a chatbot or use a credit card to pay for it, and that data is stored by the company and later hacked or improperly shared — you could be in trouble. In a situation like that, at best, it's really annoying to change your passwords; at worst, you're out of your life's savings. A company like DeepSeek, or even Meta or OpenAI, might not actively steal your information to take your identity. Still, cyberattacks happen — and if they're hosting your data, your data can be taken. Just yesterday, DeepSeek faced "large-scale malicious attacks," which forced the company to temporarily limit new registrations.
"There is always the risk of cyberattacks," Warmenhoven said. "As AI platforms become more sophisticated, they also become prime targets for hackers looking to exploit user data or the AI itself. With the rise of deepfakes and other AI-driven tools, the stakes are higher than ever."
What can an average user do? Is this worse than what all the other tech giants do?"It shouldn’t take a panic over Chinese AI to remind people that most companies in the business set the terms for how they use your private data," John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, told WIRED. "And that when you use their services, you’re doing work for them, not the other way around."
Safeguarding your data from DeepSeek is probably a good idea — but experts urge users not to stop there.
"To mitigate these risks, users should adopt a proactive approach to their cybersecurity," Warmenhoven suggested. "This includes scrutinizing the terms and conditions of any platform they engage with, understanding where their data is stored and who has access to it."
However, ultimately, it shouldn't be up to an individual. As F. Mario Trujillo, a staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told Mashable, "When you type intimate thoughts and questions to a chatbot or search engine, that content should be protected and not be unnecessarily used or shared. The best way to do that is to enact strong data privacy laws that apply to all companies, whether it be Google, OpenAI, TikTok, or DeepSeek."
Protecting your privacy shouldn’t be up to you alone. Stronger data privacy laws would help everyone, whether it concerns apps located in China or apps with similarly questionable data privacy laws in the U.S., like Meta and OpenAI.
The James Webb Space Telescope is peering into distant worlds and rewriting our grasp of the cosmos.
And in 2025, its budget is on track to get slashed.
At January's Meeting of the American Astronomical Society, Tom Brown, who heads Webb's mission at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), showcased the observatory's achievements, while also revealing the institute has been asked to consider around 20 percent in cuts to its science and mission operations. (The institute operates major telescopes for NASA, like Webb and the Hubble Space Telescope.)
The budget shortfall would begin in October 2025, the start of the federal fiscal year. The telescope, orbiting about 1 million miles from Earth, has a team of scientists and engineers choosing the the most valuable targets, calibrating its observations, and fixing problems. Budget cuts would hit these jobs, and significantly diminish Webb's productivity, Brown said.
"The operations work at STScI, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, and other NASA contractors is funded by the operational budget for Webb, so the funding cuts would incur reductions in staff working in these areas," Brown, who also researches star and galaxy formation, told Mashable.
SEE ALSO: NASA scientist viewed first Voyager images. What he saw gave him chills."One could see reductions in observing efficiency, anomaly response, calibration cadence and fidelity, support for instrument modes, and even the number of observing modes available for science," he added.
In 2025, NASA's budget request for Webb was $187 million, which included $60 million in grants that enable scientists at other institutions to plan and pursue investigations with the telescope. Yet Brown noted, in his presentation, that Webb's operations costs were "set idealistically low in 2011," and the operations budget must now contend with higher-than-anticipated inflation and a tight NASA budget. The space agency has a lot of ambitions and investments spread across a budget of some $25.4 billion, such as $7.6 billion in annual costs for the looming exploration of the moon, and eventually Mars. For example, NASA's new megarocket, the Space Launch System, was afforded over $2.4 billion in the 2025 fiscal year.
"If the budget cuts were to happen, the cuts would impact all aspects of operations."Should Webb's operations budget be cut, meaning a drop of some $37 million compared with 2025 levels, little would be immune.
"If the budget cuts were to happen, the cuts would impact all aspects of operations," Brown said. "This includes solicitation and peer-reviewed selection of observing programs, observation planning and scheduling, flight operations and commanding, systems engineering, anomaly response, data calibration, data analysis tools, science data products, data processing and archiving, management of research grants, and public outreach."
The Webb telescope, which came online in 2022, is currently in its prime five-year mission. But it's performing excellently, and NASA suspects it could run for two decades, if not more. Its productivity over this span, however, could be hampered.

Credit: NASA / ESA / CSA / STScI Tweet may have been deleted The Webb telescope's powerful abilitiesThe Webb telescope — a scientific collaboration between NASA, ESA, and the Canadian Space Agency — is designed to peer into the deepest cosmos and reveal new insights about the early universe. It's also examining intriguing planets in our galaxy, along with the planets and moons in our solar system.
Here's how Webb is achieving unparalleled feats, and likely will for years to come:
- Giant mirror: Webb's mirror, which captures light, is over 21 feet across. That's over two-and-a-half times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope's mirror, meaning Webb has six times the light collecting area. Capturing more light allows Webb to see more distant, ancient objects. The telescope is peering at stars and galaxies that formed over 13 billion years ago, just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. "We're going to see the very first stars and galaxies that ever formed," Jean Creighton, an astronomer and the director of the Manfred Olson Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, told Mashable in 2021.
- Infrared view: Unlike Hubble, which largely views light that's visible to us, Webb is primarily an infrared telescope, meaning it views light in the infrared spectrum. This allows us to see far more of the universe. Infrared has longer wavelengths than visible light, so the light waves more efficiently slip through cosmic clouds; the light doesn't as often collide with and get scattered by these densely packed particles. Ultimately, Webb's infrared eyesight can penetrate places Hubble can't.
"It lifts the veil," said Creighton.
- Peering into distant exoplanets: The Webb telescope carries specialized equipment called spectrographs that will revolutionize our understanding of these far-off worlds. The instruments can decipher what molecules (such as water, carbon dioxide, and methane) exist in the atmospheres of distant exoplanets — be they gas giants or smaller rocky worlds. Webb looks at exoplanets in the Milky Way galaxy. Who knows what we'll find?
"We might learn things we never thought about," Mercedes López-Morales, an exoplanet researcher and astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics-Harvard & Smithsonian, told Mashable in 2021.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has reportedly rushed to wipe the metadata from some of its memos after the embedded information indicated that they were written by people associated with Project 2025. While many members of President Donald Trump's administration have links to The Heritage Foundation's controversial movement, questions have been raised regarding whether some of these authors are even part of the OPM.
SEE ALSO: Did Trump's executive order just make everyone in the U.S. female?Spotted by Reddit user r/AdeptGreen, several memos issued by the OPM since Trump's inauguration have had metadata showing them to be written by people linked to Project 2025. Metadata is information about another set of information, such as its author, the date it was created, and the file's size. It is frequently embedded within the file.
For example, the OPM states that Jan. 22 memo Guidance on Presidential Memorandum: Return to In-Person Work is from its Acting Director Charles Ezell. However, the document's metadata indicates that it was actually created by Noah Peters, an attorney linked to Project 2025. Mashable downloaded the memo on Tuesday prior to its alteration, and was able to view the original metadata.
While Peters' name was in the metadata of some OPM memos, others were apparently penned by James Sherk, who Trump has announced will serve on the White House Domestic Policy Council. He has also been linked to Project 2025, previously working for The Heritage Foundation for over a decade. According to the metadata, Sherk authored two joint memos with the OPM and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
While the OPM has reportedly removed the metadata and reuploaded its memos, Mashable was unable to access them at all at time of writing on Wednesday, the links to each one now failing to load. Tech researcher Molly White has archived the original documents.
It's common practice for managers to have employees draft documents which they subsequently sign off on. However, it's much less common for people to write memos for departments that they aren't a part of. Though Peters' LinkedIn page now lists him as a full-time Senior Advisor at OPM, Mashable was unable to find any information suggesting Sherk has any role with either this department or the OMB.
Peters' and Sherk's apparent work on the OPM's memos appear to be the product of Trump's increasing politicisation of the federal workforce. Last week Trump issued an executive order reinstating Schedule F, a policy from his first term which reclassified thousands of federal workers as political appointees. This reclassification granted Trump's administration the authority to hire, dismiss, or otherwise manage people in these roles — including installing workers who adhere to the president's politics.
Such consolidation of power was also a goal for Project 2025, which stated in its policy agenda that a conservative U.S president must have the "boldness to bend or break the bureaucracy to the presidential will."
Regardless of its appropriateness, it wouldn't be surprising to see more federal documents with surprising authors in the future — especially considering Trump's plans to shrink the U.S. government. Almost all federal employees were offered buyouts on Tuesday, with promises of around eight months of wages on the condition that they voluntarily leave their jobs by Feb. 6. Over two million workers reportedly received the offer.
Though the Trump administration likely doesn't expect everyone to accept its offer, doing so looks like a smart move right now. Trump has made no secret of his intent to eliminate millions of government jobs via the newly-created, Elon Musk-led U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The organisation had been planned to be co-led by Vivek Ramaswamy, who previously expressed an intention to reduce the federal workforce by 75 percent, including firing one million people in 2025.
While Ramaswamy is no longer involved with the project, DOGE's goal to execute drastic cuts amongst federal personnel appears to remain in place.
What is Project 2025?Organised by conservative think-tank The Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 is a political movement which aims to swiftly and decisively steer the U.S. toward the right.
In its policy agenda "Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise," Project 2025 lays out a lengthy set of proposals and plans for a right-wing U.S. administration, spanning over 900 pages. These plans include significantly downsizing the Department of Education, criminalising pornography, eliminating gender-affirming healthcare, and abolishing federal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.
Initially published in 2023, Project 2025's policy agenda has garnered the condemnation of Democratic politicians while becoming a guiding force for Republicans.
Trump previously distanced himself from Project 2025 in 2024, stating that he had "no idea who is behind it."
"I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social last July. "Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them."
Even so, Trump's slew of executive actions since his inauguration have closely mirrored Project 2025's wishlist. The president has also appointed individuals involved with the document to key roles in his administration. Such appointees include Russell Vought, one of the authors of Project 2025's policy agenda and Trump's pick to head the OBM after having taken on the role during the president's first term. Vought was the previously quoted Project 2025 author who called for federal agencies to "bend or break" to Trump's demands.

Shopping for a new speaker is no longer about music. Well, not entirely. Because finding a speaker with excellent sound is fairly straightforward. The top audio brands all produce high-end speakers. But you have to think beyond that. You have to think smart. Because this is the age of the smart home.
It might seem like a daunting task because smart speakers are everywhere. It's hard to know which speaker is the smartest, or which models have the right kind of smarts to suit your home and lifestyle. You can spend all day combing over product descriptions and review sections to find the best fit for your smart home.
But you don't need to go to all that hassle. We've done some of the hard work for you and compiled a list of some of the best smart speakers around. First off, here's some helpful information to help you make that final decision.
What is a smart speaker?Smart speakers usually come with built-in voice assistants and can be found in almost any home at this point. If you have a bunch of smart devices in your home — smart lights, a smart thermostat, smart home security, a smart robot vacuum, or even a smart toaster (yes, that's a real thing) — a smart speaker can act as a hub that keeps them connected and controls your smart home overall. In short, a smart speaker is what makes your home truly smart. It's the smart home nucleus.
Are smart speakers worth the money?Although smart speakers aren't always the best way to listen to your audio and aren't usually prioritised for music, they're absolutely worth having if you have the budget. (And you might not even notice the audio downgrade unless you have a finely-tuned audiophile ear.) Plus, smart speakers don't always have to break the bank — there are plenty of budget options out there, including the fantastic Echo Dot.
Why do you need a smart speaker? The real reason to get a smart speaker is convenience. Hands-free voice assistants are the name of the game when it comes to smart speakers. Being able to plan your day, catch up on news, play music, and control most of your smart tech just by talking to your a speaker is truly excellent. It's a great way to maximise your day by doing less.
What's the best voice assistant? The three best-known voice assistants are Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Siri. Out of those three, most would put Siri at the bottom. That's not to say that Siri is a bad voice assistant, but Apple is just way too exclusive about their propriety operating systems, and Siri is only available to Apple devices. Then we get to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It comes down to personal choice. Both Amazon and Google have their specialist skills. You can't really lose with either choice here — just think about what features you want most, and go for the one that fits that vision best. It's fair to say Alexa is more popular of the two, though.
What skills does Alexa have?If you're an online shopper and have an arsenal of smart devices throughout your home, Alexa will probably be your best bet. Amazon's smart speakers recognise more devices than Google's Assistant, so you're more likely to have a better time with an Echo if you really want to go for a true smart home. Alexa's direct connection to the Amazon store also makes online shopping easy, allowing you to add things to your cart and check out solely through voice commands. If you get lots of goods from Amazon, Amazon's smart speakers are a no-brainer.
What can Google Assistant do?Google Assistant tends to be better at things like general knowledge, location services, and other real-world information that you might need at a moment's notice. Google Assistant is also great for those with Android phones, enabling easy exchanges of information between your smartphone and smart speaker when using Google-supported apps. Google speakers also tend to be better at networking, so if you're looking to buy more than one smart speaker and connect them, Google is a good start.
What is the best smart speaker? That's something that only you can decide. But we've tried to make your life easier by lining up a selection of the best smart speakers from top brands. There's something for everyone on this list, not to mention every budget — because these speakers don't always come cheap. You just need to consider the options, and then pick the speaker that best matches up with your smart home and lifestyle needs.
These are the best smart speakers in 2025.

Playing music out loud from your smartphone is a crime against music. Good sound is one of the few things that smartphone tech brands have never quite mastered. For the best audio experience from your phone or smart device it comes down to one of two options: great headphones or a great Bluetooth speaker.
If you're more inclined towards the communal listening experience, or you don't like having to rely on headphones, the range of portable Bluetooth speakers is getting better all the time. Wired speakers were once considered to go-to option for audiophile-quality sound, but that isn't necessarily the case anymore. Though it's true that the real appeal of Bluetooth speaker is the convenience of listening anywhere.
Indeed, there are lots of high-quality portable Bluetooth speakers. These are great for taking out on a picnic, or when you're travelling away and you want tunes in the hotel or at the poolside. Or even for just moving from room to room around the home. But what should you look for when buying a portable Bluetooth speaker? What's the difference between a great-sounding and under-performing Bluetooth speaker? Here's a quick guide and a selection of the best available Bluetooth speakers.
How good is Bluetooth speaker sound quality? It's as good as you need it to be. So ask yourself the following questions: Will you be using your speakers solely for music? For podcasts? Maybe a bit of both? This factors into what kind of audio power you need, whether that's surround sound, Dolby Atmos, or traditional stereo. Not all speakers produce the same kind of sound quality, so it's important to know exactly what kind of listening experience you're looking to get out of it before you make the purchase. Typically, smaller speakers are more portable, but their sound quality isn't quite as strong as larger devices.
How many speakers do you need?Always choose quality over quantity. Having two amazing speakers, for instance, will always ensure better results than multiple average speakers. However, having too many speakers around is just going to take up an unnecessary amount of space. Indeed, two speakers is a sweet spot, and certainly an ideal set-up if you listen to a lot of music. That's because music is normally recorded for a stereo setting. Having a left and right channel will do you wonders. Fortunately several of the options below can be connected to other speakers for stereo sound. If you have a smaller space, however, one good speaker is perfectly adequate.
What smart features do Bluetooth speakers have?As with everything in life, it's a case of getting what you pay for. Some low-price Bluetooth speakers are good at just pumping out lively tunes. Others will include smart features such as voice assistant, EQ customisation, app control, and other advanced tech. Ask yourself if you want to integrate your speaker into a system of smart devices. Several of the below options have smart functions and access to Alexa.
Are portable speakers waterproof?Finding a waterproof speaker is not absolutely necessary, but plenty of portable speakers are waterproof or water resistant — the portability means they'll see a lot of poolside and party action, which means lots of splashing and spillages. It would be a shame if a rogue glass of water ended up being the demise of your new speaker, so if you have the option to go waterproof, do it.
What is the best portable Bluetooth speaker? If you're not much of an audiophile and simply keen on stepping away from using your smartphone's built-in speaker, don't get too stressed over whether the bass is strong and the mids are crisp. Go with the type that suits you best, and you'll be satisfied regardless. We've tried to make the buying process a little easier by handpicking some standout speakers from top brands. There should be something for everyone in this roundup of the best portable speakers, with a speaker for every budget.
These are the best portable Bluetooth speakers in 2025.
