Kamala Harris deepfakes are going viral on TikTok and Elon Musk's X

Mashable - Tue, 07/23/2024 - 18:08

The internet has been full of reactions and memes ever since Joe Biden announced he wasn't running for reelection on Sunday and proceeded to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee.

Harris' supporters on social media have focused on funny moments and offbeat speeches delivered by the Vice President over the past few years. Like "Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?", for example.

Some supporters of the Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump, however, have chosen a different path: Sharing manipulated media on social media showcasing a fake speech that Kamala Harris never delivered.

The video, which has gone viral on TikTok and Twitter, features Kamala Harris speaking in front of a live crowd. However, the clip is a deepfake. The video has been edited and the audio has been replaced with what appears to be an AI-generated clone voice.

Media Matters for America released a report on Monday concerning the deepfake going viral on TikTok, where it received millions of views. Shortly after the report, TikTok removed the posts as well as the fake audio from the platform.

"TikTok has firm policies against harmful AI-generated content and misleadingly edited media, and is aggressively removing this content while partnering with fact-checkers to assess the accuracy of content on TikTok in real time," a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement provided to Mashable.

Kamala Harris deepfake resurges after candidacy for president

This is not the first time that this specific Kamala Harris deepfake has been spread online. Multiple outlets debunked the deepfake video of Harris when it was first posted last year.

The deepfake clip features a bonafide video of Harris speaking in front of an audience at Howard University in 2023. However, the video has been digitally altered.

"Today is today and yesterday was today yesterday," Kamala Harris appears to say while slurring her words in the viral video. "Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So, live today so the future today will be as the past today, as it is tomorrow."

However, Harris never said that quote

The full video of the live event does not feature the moment seen in the viral deepfake clip. Experts have pointed out that there is digital noise around her mouth in the video, an attempt to edit the clip to match the fake audio. In addition, the fake audio doesn't feature any background noise nor audio from the crowd.

Regardless, more than a year after the Harris deepfake was debunked, it went viral on Elon Musk's X after a right-wing user uploaded the clip to the platform last week. The post still exists on X, where it has received more than 3.4 million views. Based on its policies, X does not remove this type of content. However, X users did manage to add a user-generated Community Note to the post, letting others know that the video is fake.

Unlike X, AI-generated misinformation does break TikTok's platform rules. TikTok says it proactively removes 98 percent of content violating its policies. However, according to the Media Matters report, one of the viral uploads of the Harris deepfake received more than 4.1 million views before it was removed. TikTok says it is working to detect other uploads of the Harris deepfake in order to remove it.

Deepfake videos have long been a concern for political campaigns. Now, with AI-generated audio and video tools so freely available and accessible by the public, deepfakes will likely be a bigger issue in 2024 than ever before.

'Deadpool and Wolverine' review: Can Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman save the MCU?

Mashable - Tue, 07/23/2024 - 18:00

Deadpool & Wolverine has come to save us (and Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe) from superhero fatigue. After flops like The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, that is not just the studio's hope but an actual plot point in this Deadpool 2 sequel.

In act one, the Merc with a Mouth proudly proclaims himself the MCU's messiah or "Marvel Jesus," destined to return this formerly world-conquering franchise to unquestionable glory. But can a sequel saturated with IP and blatant fan service truly shake off the baggage Kevin Feige's MCU has accumulated across 30-plus films and assorted TV shows?

To its credit, Deadpool & Wolverine does a lot to claw Disney's expanded MCU library back into fans' hearts. Reuniting the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine brings scads of satisfying spectacle and welcome surprises to the big screen, along with a gleeful barrage of cameos, an avalanche of action, and a slew of R-rated jokes and f-bombs. Plus, it's just really fucking fun. But past all the pomp and fourth-wall-breaking is Disney's creeping influence on Marvel's most outrageous movie hero.

Deadpool & Wolverine cherry-picks Marvel movies for a new adventure.  Hugh Jackman as Wolverine/Logan and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool/Wade Wilson in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Credit: Jay Maidment / 20th Century Studios / MARVEL

Superhero sequels mean retconning, and Deadpool & Wolverine uses this handy storytelling device to situate its narrative after the events of Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan. So, when an overstepping Time Variance Authority agent dubbed Mr. Paradox (a deliciously deranged Matthew Macfadyen) threatens the existence of Wade "Deadpool" Wilson's universe, the quick-witted vigilante (Reynolds) hijacks TVA tech to seek out a non-dead Wolverine (Jackman) to save the day.

SEE ALSO: You can now relive that awful 220-second 'Succession' argument all over again

This leads to a wonderfully bonkers montage in which Jackman reprises the role of Wolverine over and over, bringing to life a variety of comic incarnations not previously seen onscreen. But things go from team-up to trouble when Deadpool and his kidnapped Wolverine are pitched into the TVA's wasteland. There, forgotten variants fight for survival, a clever means of resurrecting a terrific series of past Marvel characters, from the goofy to the iconic. But it also means the oft-brawling buds have to face off against Charles Xavier's evil twin sister, Cassandra Nova (a wonderfully wicked and slinky Emma Corrin). Cassandra Nova has all kinds of deadly telekinetic powers, but she truly relishes probing her long, slender fingers INTO the brains of her lessers. And to her, everyone is a lesser.

Through this setup, the fleet of screenwriters — which is comprised of Reynolds, Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, as well as Zeb Wells and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy — has seemingly free reign to loop in Marvel heroes and villains for a zany and convoluted adventure that actually has a budget.

Deadpool & Wolverine delivers on fan service and brutal violence.  Credit: Jay Maidment / 20th Century Studios / MARVEL

Levy, who previously helmed the Reynolds-led, video game-inspired action-comedy Free Guy, realizes what audiences want most out Deadpool & Wolverine and delivers plenty of it. Reynolds is as comfortable as ever in the snug-fitting supersuit of his wise-cracking antihero, firing off snarky asides as freely and frequently as bullets. But while Reynolds' reliable schtick will please Deadpool fans, Jackman steadily runs away with this movie — sometimes on all fours!

Over the course of nearly 30 years, Jackman has satisfyingly flexed and glowered and gone battle-mode berserk as Wolverine, finding fresh textures of rage, regret, and tenderness along the way. That he didn't get an Oscar nomination for Logan remains a cinematic injustice. But there's a fresh victory in seeing the 55-year-old action star unsheathe those adamantium claws once again, as gruff and lovable as ever.

The comic sharpness to their interplay is classic vaudeville, with Deadpool as the buffoon and Wolverine the straight man. But far more intense than the slapstick between such a comedic duo are the fights; this pugnacious pair repeatedly full-on brawls with each other. Freed from the constraints of a PG-13 rating, these heroes hit hard, blood and brain matter spraying and spattering in R-rated gouts. There's some great exchanges here, both verbally and violently. At times, the packed theater whooped in child-like anticipation as they squared off. Their intense interplay alone will likely put a big dumb grin on your face, as it did mine.

But while the opening action scene is a gruesome delight, blending the best bits of Deadpool's irreverence and ultra-violence, Levy runs out of ideas as the movie goes along — and the action suffers. For instance, the running gag from past Deadpool movies where brutal actions scenes are set to femme pop songs (Juice Newton's "Angel of the Morning," for instance) becomes tired. Levy's choices — which include bangers like Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" and Avril Lavigne's "I'm with You" — feel disconnected not because of their tone or lyrics (though they are) but because the choreography and edit have no shared musicality. It feels like any millennial-beloved pop jam could have served just as well.

Beyond the titular twosome, a bevy of exciting characters do battle in this sequel, though the success in execution is wildly uneven. Some will get hero moments, where their signature weapon gets its big boom. Others will get a close-up savoring a smirk or a sneer. However, the actual action sequences lack vision and cohesion, so they become a barrage of blows with diminishing returns. Some of it is hard to follow; some of it is just repetitive. At one point, when a flood of variant Deadpools do battle, it's difficult to make out where our Deadpool is in the fray. The action begins to actually undermine the experience as Levy gets in over his head.

Was Deadpool & Wolverine neutered by Disney? This is Dogpool. Credit: Jay Maidment / 20th Century Studios / MARVEL

Logan and Deadpool — which were both rated R — pushed the superhero genre out of its comfort zone by embracing elements intended only for "mature" audiences, including sex, gore, drug use, and curse words. Their similarly R-rated team-up features a lot of these same taboo elements. And yet, upon reflection, I marvel less at what they got away with and more at what they shied away from.

For instance, as teased in trailers, there will be jokes about cocaine — Blind Al's vice of choice — but no drug use will be done onscreen save for Wolverine chugging Jim Beam. (Birds of Prey scoffs in Disney's general direction.) There's plenty of cursing, with the word "fuck" thrown around so much it starts to feel jarringly juvenile. But amid all the violence and cursing, there's a noticeable absence of sex. Deadpool offered a whole hilarious montage with Wade and Vanessa engaging in holiday-themed sex acts. Deadpool 2 dabbled in cheeky jokes that hinted at the character being pansexual, as he was in the comics. But Deadpool & Wolverine has tamped down on the dirty jokes with a few mild exceptions, while also sidelining its other established queer characters. (Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her girlfriend Yukio are little more than cameos this time around.)

SEE ALSO: 'Deadpool 2' is the gayest superhero movie yet. That's not saying much.

The subtle squeamishness over sex and sexuality is one thing. But considered in conjunction with half-assed punchlines about Deadpool fearing being "canceled by the woke mob" or being over "Gen Z's trauma-dumping," it seems Disney is moving the Merc with a Mouth toward conservatism. Perhaps a movie meant to to placate the same audience that gnashed their teeth over the last Star Wars trilogy's — and The Acolyte's focus on marginalized characters over the previously predominantly white, straight, and male heroes. The jokes at the expense of Disney, Marvel, and Kevin Feige play the same way in effect. Sure, they seem initially provocative, with Deadpool calling out Marvel's missteps or Feige's rules for MCU movies. But consider how notoriously controlling these studios are over this IP. Consider Disney and Marvel's history of squelching queer representation on-screen. And you can see how Wade, who is supposed to titillate us with his unapologetic hot takes, feels less like he's breaking fresh ground and more like he's parroting the well-worn gripes of Twitter trolls.

It seems without a big studio franchise to fight against or parody, Deadpool becomes another cog in the Marvel machine.

Deadpool & Wolverine is great fun — if you don't look too closely.  Credit: Jay Maidment / 20th Century Studios / MARVEL

Don't misunderstand me: I had an absolute blast watching this sequel.

Like its predecessors, it shoulders a convoluted plot that shifts from settings, timelines, and characters with a feral lack of focus. But Levy and his team pack so much entertainment into this chaotic movie that it's easy to overlook its rough bits as you're watching. If you're once more beguiled by Reynold's caustic comic persona or in awe of Jackman's burly bravado or giddy over the live-action showdown you may have imagined for decades, you won't be alone. There's pleasures aplenty in Deadpool & Wolverine, chief among them the absolutely outstanding casting that not only loops in crowd-pleasing cameos but also two — count 'em, two! — Marvel villains who are genuinely unnerving and wild fun, making the most out of every line. Honestly, Macfadyen and Corrin are reason enough to see this in theaters.

As a Deadpool movie, Deadpool & Wolverine is satisfying — it proves to be propulsive, often hilarious, and rife with thrills and surprises. But as the film that, by its own hyperbolic admission, is intended to save superhero movies from themselves, it's just okay. The action has nothing as jaw-dropping or instantly iconic as early Marvel or even the first Deadpool, which is no small matter. But more damning is that Deadpool & Wolverine doesn't feel like a course correction or a rebellion as much as another brick in the wall, building a shrine to fan service. And so expands a franchise that once offered carefree thrill rides but now requires a timeline graphic and an open wiki to follow along. (Don't do that in the theater, we beg you.

While Deadpool & Wolverine is a wild ride that's sure to elate audiences and send fans happily down rabbit holes of lore, allusions, and showbiz news, it is also a bit of a disappointment. Once the buzz of giggling wears off, it's clear: Deadpool & Wolverine isn't here to save superhero movies. It's here to show off Disney's newly acquired IP.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26.

Google has changed its mind about 'killing' third-party tracking cookies

Mashable - Tue, 07/23/2024 - 15:29

Four years ago, Google made a surprising announcement: It was going to "phase out" cookies, which allow third parties to track users on Google Chrome.

Even though Google shared it was going to take a few years to find a new middle ground to avoid a total disruption of the online advertising industry, this was seen as a pretty big win for user privacy advocates.

Well, Google just announced on Monday that it was scrapping its cookie-ditching plans.

According to Google, the search giant will not kill third-party cookies. Instead, Google plans on introducing a new feature in Chrome that allows users to make an informed decision that affects their entire web browsing experience.

Google backtracks on cookies

Google originally shared its intent to depreciate third-party cookies back in 2020. Cookies are breadcrumbs of data stored on users' devices that store logins, website preferences, and – most notably – allow third parties to track users for targeted advertising purposes.

However, while Google shared its intent to kill cookies, the company made it clear that it would take a few years as they worked out solutions with the ad industry. Regulators in the UK and EU also shared concerns with Google regarding expediting the removal of cookies as it could be unfair to competitors.

However, there was some movement on Google's goal to end cookies earlier this year. In January 2024, Google began rolling out the Privacy Sandbox to a very small percentage of Google Chrome users. Google's Privacy Sandbox is essentially its answer to cookies.

The user privacy-focused product replaces cookies with an Ad Topics API, which sorts users into ad categories that third parties use to serve ads. It seemed like a good common ground that Google was searching for. Companies can still advertise to targeted consumers and individual users aren't tracked by third parties.

However, on Monday, Google shared that it's reversing course on killing off cookies outright in a post titled "A new path for Privacy Sandbox on the web." Google said it received feedback from developers, publishers, regulators, and the ad industry — and decided to go with an alternative solution.

Google did not share the details of exactly what this "new experience in Chrome that lets people make an informed choice that applies across their web browsing" will be. The announcement post was authored by Anthony Chavez, the VP of Google's Privacy Sandbox, who discussed the success of the product in achieving its privacy-focused goals.

But based on Google's announcement, it appears the pivot here is that Google will still allow third-party cookies by default and potentially provide a Privacy Sandbox-powered user privacy mode as an alternative option.

Whatever Google's "new experience" is, cookies aren't going anywhere. The search giant may provide users with more privacy-focused choices, but a more advertiser-friendly clearly won out.

It’s 4 days later and Delta is still affected by CrowdStrike. Here’s why.

Mashable - Tue, 07/23/2024 - 13:31

Most of the world has slowly recovered from the devastating CrowdStrike and Microsoft outages that hamstrung countless businesses and industries last Friday. One airline, however, is still struggling early this week.

Delta Airlines is still dealing with numerous cancelled flights and delays. It's become clear the airline has had a much more difficult time getting back on its feet than other companies across nearly all sectors of the economy.

Around midday Tuesday, more than 455 Delta flights had been cancelled, far outpacing any other airline, according to data from FlightAware. It also had more than 650 delays.

Why is Delta so slow on getting back on its feet?

Computer systems in airports, at airlines, and pretty much everywhere else went down Friday, but Delta has had unique struggles trying to recover. The issue with Delta largely stems from a crew-tracking tool that relies on Windows, leaving the airline in a difficult position as it tried to manage the overwhelming schedule changes caused by the outages.

“The technology issue occurred on the busiest travel weekend of the summer, with our booked loads exceeding 90%, limiting our re-accommodation capabilities,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian wrote in a letter to customers.

He added later in the letter:

"Specifically, the issue impacted the Microsoft Windows operating system. Delta has a significant number of applications that use that system, and in particular one of our crew tracking-related tools was affected and unable to effectively process the unprecedented number of changes triggered by the system shutdown. Our teams have been working around the clock to recover and restore full functionality."

Delta has to manually reset a ton of computers. Half its IT systems are Windows-based, which meant they crashed and need to be manually fixed after the CrowdStrike issue.

"The CrowdStrike error required Delta’s IT teams to manually repair and reboot each of the affected systems, with additional time then needed for applications to synchronize and start communicating with each other," the company said in statement.

So if you're flying Delta on Tuesday or the upcoming days, just know there's a good chance the airline is still reeling from the CrowdStrike outages.

Barbieland has new residents, as Mattel unveils first blind Barbie

Mashable - Tue, 07/23/2024 - 13:24

Mattel's latest Barbieland Fashionistas are the stylish likenesses of a blind Barbie and her a mobility aid, and the line's first Black Barbie with Down syndrome, adding even more representative might to the toy brand's catalogue.

The company's first Blind Barbie is the latest to come with both fashionable and functional accessories, including a white and red cane and sunglasses for eye protection, meant to embody the diversity of its real life friends. The company has released an array of similarly representative dolls in the past, including a Barbie wheelchair user and her service dog.

"By increasing representation and promoting awareness about the experiences of blind individuals and those with low vision, our shared goal is to inspire boundless opportunities for everyone, ultimately leading to a world of greater accessibility and inclusion," wrote American Foundation for the Blind CEO Eric Bridges.

The company didn't stop there. Mattel's first Black Barbie with Down syndrome joins Mattel's existing Fashionista doll with Down Syndrome, first released in 2023. The two new dolls were designed in collaboration with the American Foundation for the Blind and the National Down syndrome Society, a previous Mattel creative partner. The organizations consulted on all aspects of design, including the physical sculpt of the dolls.

Mattel's blind Barbie is designed with articulated elbows, an uncommon feature on Barbies, so that she can better manage the use of her cane. She also comes with specially textured clothing and packaging, with color contrasting specifically designed for those with low vision. The package features Braille lettering, as well as a new, easier-to-open design — Mattel announced the new packaging will be added to all Fashionista line dolls moving forward.

For Mattel's Black Barbie with Down syndrome, the design team brainstormed with a focus group of Black individuals, including young Black women, from the Down syndrome community. The result is a doll with a shorter frame, longer torso, and low muscle tone, Mattel explains, as well as a unique facial design. Other details included long, braided hair and a dress designed in the Down syndrome awareness color palette.

"NDSS is thrilled to introduce a second Barbie doll with Down syndrome," wrote NDSS president and CEO Kandi Pickard. "Having this doll launched alongside the new Barbie doll with Blindness marks another important step in expanding representation for the disability community."

The dolls will also be featured in a YouTube series, "Barbie Doll Adventures," out this fall. "We recognize that Barbie is much more than just a doll; she represents self-expression and can create a sense of belonging," wrote Mattel's senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls Krista Berger.

You can still get the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 for their Prime Day price

Looking for a new pair of earbuds? You've got plenty of choices out there, including excellent picks from Apple and Bose. But if you want to go outside the box here and try something new, you could also opt for the OnePlus Buds Pro 2, another pair that offer noise cancelling and other features that might strike your fancy.

As of July 23, you can get the OnePlus Buds Pro 2 for $119.99. That's $60 off their normal price of $179.99 and a discount of 33%. That's the same deal they were available for during Prime Day, so if you happened to miss out on the major Amazon sale event, you can still scoop these up for the same discount.

These flagship OnePlus earbuds offer great sound quality and feel good in the ear, according to Mashable reviewer Alex Perry, with app-based customization and "decent" active noise cancellation. While they do suffer from some Bluetooth issues and fail to innovate in a market that's already crowded with other earbud options, for less than $150, you could absolutely do worse.

"Their sound quality is splendid enough, and ANC works most of the time. They’re comfortable to wear for hours at a time, and they look pretty cool. On top of all of that, you get a bevy of cool app-based features, with plenty of parity across both OnePlus and non-OnePlus devices," wrote Perry.

This is the best price we've seen on the buds so far, so if they sound like music to your ears, better scoop them up.

The Amazfit GTR 4 smartwatch just dropped to its lowest price ever at Amazon

While advances in technology continue to impress every day, the battery life on some essential gadgets can still feel lacking. If you've been sporting a smartwatch that can't make it through an entire day without recharging, Amazon has the perfect smartwatch deal for you.

As of July 23, the Amazfit GTR 4 smartwatch is on sale for just $139.99 at Amazon, marked down $60 from the typical price of $199.99. That's a 30% discount. This sale price is also the lowest we've ever seen at Amazon by a long shot.

One of the most impressive features on the Amazfit GTR 4 is its battery life, which can last up to 14 days. While many smartwatches are designed to track sleep, not all can get even 24 hours of battery life, which leaves us wondering what the opportune timeframe is to take the watch off in between tracking steps and sleep. The Amazfit GTR 4 keeps metrics on sleep quality, daytime naps, sleep cycles, and breathing rates throughout the night. And even in power-saving mode, the Amazfit GTR 4 can still enable sports modes and keep tabs on health metrics.

The watch also comes with access to Alexa, who can help you make calls from the watch with just a voice demand. And if you plan to head off on a run and listen to your favorite playlist while leaving your phone at home, connect your earbuds to the watch and tune into downloaded music. And while you're on that run, you'll still be able to read the watch's screen, thanks to its anti-glare technology on the glass bezel cover.

If you're in the market for a fully capable yet affordable smartwatch, look no further than the Amazfit GTR 4 on sale for its lowest price ever.

Sun unleashes solar storm at Earth, U.S. may see brilliant aurora

Mashable - Tue, 07/23/2024 - 12:19

The sun, in a heightened state of solar activity, has hurled a potent mass of material at Earth.

This could mean glorious aurora, or Northern Lights, over parts of the U.S. on July 24, according to the federal government's Space Weather Prediction Center.

The inciting event, which occurred on July 21, is intense but normal. It's called a coronal mass ejection, or CME. These occur when the sun ejects a mass of super hot gas (plasma). "It's like scooping up a piece of the sun and ejecting it into space," Mark Miesch, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center, previously told Mashable. These types of events happen more as the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year solar cycle, which is expected in July 2025.

SEE ALSO: Why Earthlings are safe when huge solar storms strike our planet

When these solar particles collide with Earth's magnetic field, an event called a "geomagnetic storm" can transpire in Earth's upper atmosphere. Many particles slam into molecules in the air, following magnetic lines to the poles where they deposit energy and produce fantastic atmospheric radiance (popularly called the Northern Lights in the Northern Hemisphere).

"The aurora may become visible over some northern and upper Midwest states from New York to Idaho," the Space Weather Prediction Center wrote on July 23. "Those wishing to see the aurora should visit our webpage for updates."

This last sentence is crucial: These are natural, variable events. Nothing is guaranteed, but certain regions may indeed be treated to a light show on July 24. You can check the Space Weather Prediction Center homepage, which includes an aurora forecast.

A graphic from the Space Weather Prediction Center announcing the expected geomagnetic storm on July 24, 2024. Credit: NOAA / Space Weather Prediction Center Tweet may have been deleted

Earlier this year, in May, multiple coronal ejections created vibrant aurora across large swathes of the Northern Hemisphere, in areas that rarely see these atmospheric lights.

While such solar storms can sometimes pose serious threats to our power grids, satellites, and electrical infrastructure, fortunately these formidable events don't pose a threat to life on Earth's surface. Earth boasts both a robust magnetic field and atmosphere, which keep dangerous cosmic particles away from our fragile flesh.

"Without those we would be in real trouble," Bennett Maruca, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Delaware who researches the sun, told Mashable.

An image of a CME impacting an illustration of Earth's magnetic field, shown by the blue lines. Credit: SOHO / LASCO / EIT (ESA & NASA)

Well above our clouds and weather, both the ionosphere and thermosphere (together ranging from some 50 to 400 miles up) absorb charged particles and damaging radiation, like X-rays and UV rays. Meanwhile, our planet's magnetic field loops out from the poles into space, trapping a lot of harmful solar energy a safe distance away (and in some cases deflecting these energetic solar particles).

Stay tuned for more space weather this year — some of it may light up our skies.
