Samuel L. Jackson narrates Kendrick Lamars halftime show as Uncle Sam

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 21:22

Kendrick Lamar teased a big surprise for his Super Bowl LIX halftime show, and that included the show being introduced and narrated in parts by Samuel L. Jackson.

Jackson appeared in character as 'Uncle Sam.' He sported a blue coat and patriotic tophat, donning a red, white, and blue ensemble similar to the historic U.S. Army recruiting ads.

Kendrick's dancers were also donning monochromatic looks in either red, white or blue. At another point, the formed the American flag on stage.

Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show: Every performer who hit the stage

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 20:54

Kendrick Lamar is headlining the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, but he wasn't the only star to take the stage.

As Lamar ran through the hits, including the one song everyone was waiting to hear (except Drake), he was joined by several guest stars.

Samuel L. Jackson

He started the show with Samuel L. Jackson as Uncle Sam, and Jackson stayed on to emcee the rest of the show.

He played a medley of his most popular songs, many of which were produced by Mustard, who joined him on stage.

We knew Kendrick would bring out SZA, since it was announced earlier this week. But that didn't stop fans from losing it when they got to hear All The Stars.

One of the biggest surprises was Serena Williams, the tennis superstar, who was dancing at key parts during Kendricks performance.

He made many nods to his biggest Drake diss "Not Like Us," including saying he wanted to play it but knew people "like to sue." The song, and beef as a whole, resulted in multiple lawsuits — including Drake suing Universal Music Group and Spotify. Kendrick did eventually play the song at the show, which the audience sung along to, and alleges Drake's pedophilia and sexual misconduct. Beyond solidifying his victory against Drake, also broke several Spotify records and won Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

Kendrick Lamar sports A Minor chain during Super Bowl halftime

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 20:49

Kendrick Lamar took to the stage for the Super Bowl LIX halftime show at almost exactly 7:30 p.m. ET and the first things fans noticed was the chain he was wearing.

Decked out in diamonds, Lamar's chain featured a lowercase A...or 'A minor' in reference to probably the most popular line in his song 'Not Like Us.'

"Not Like Us," a diss track about fellow rapper Drake, just won three of the five Grammy's Lamar took home earlier this month. The track won best music video, best rap performance, and best rap song.

Fans on X/Twitter loved the subtle note the chain added to the rapper's performance. Here's what they had to say:

After months of speculation, Kendrick Lamar delivered, performing his Grammy-winning track "Not Like Us" to the absolute delight of the New Orleans crowd at Super Bowl LIX.

He also wasn't afraid to use a line that attacked Drake, and the Superdome crowd sang along.

For context, "Not Like Us" was the final blow in a months-long war between Kendrick and Drake, a feud that culminated in Kendrick accusing Drake of hiding a second child and being a child predator. High-energy, relentless, and catchy as hell, it doubled down on Kendrick’s allegations while turning them into an anthem.

The Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show (yes, you have to say the full name) has arrived, and Kendrick Lamar just set the stage on fire in New Orleans. The Pulitzer Prize-winning and 20-time Grammy-winning rapper, known for his razor-sharp lyricism and powerful storytelling, delivered a performance that was both visually stunning and emotionally charged, proving once again why he’s one of the greatest artists of his generation.

Thus, social media responded accordingly.

$14 million Super Bowl ad compares ChatGPT to the wheel and electricity

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 20:20

When you think of ChatGPT, do you think of eerie crocodile swamp noises and amorphous blobs in a vast, empty, white space?

Honestly? I kind of do.

And apparently so does the advertising team that made ChatGPT's Super Bowl ad. According to the Verge, the ad cost about $14 million.

ChatGPT's ad premiered in the middle of the second quarter of the 2025 Super Bowl and started — you guessed it — with eerie crocodile swamp noises and amorphous blobs in a vast, empty, white space. Then vague commercial pop comes in as the blob shifts into multiple blobs that make up a caveman, then fire, a wheel, people riding horses, corn growing, a ship sailing the ocean, a train, a lightbulb, a human skeleton, an airplane, DNA, a live television show, a man walking on the moon, the internet, and, finally, modern users ostensibly asking ChatGPT questions.

"Summarize this article," a voice requests. "Help me practice asking for a raise," another voice says. "Act as my sleep coach," another voice says. "What bird is this?" a voice asks.

The comparison is clear: ChatGPT wants you to think the creation of generative AI is as big a technological advancement as fire, the wheel, or electricity.

All the best 2025 Super Bowl commercials

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 18:11

The Super Bowl is more than just a game that shows the matchup between the best team on the AFC and the best team on the NFC — it's also the one night a year any of us ever watch commercials anymore. Since the 1970s, the Super Bowl has become a huge night for advertisers, with Coca-Cola, Apple, and Google all spending loads of money and getting huge responses in return.

This year, some companies put their ads online ahead of the game while some are waiting for the element of surprise to take them viral. Tim Calkins, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, told the Associated Press that this year, advertisers are avoiding controversy more than every — particularly after the 2024 presidential election. Now, there are fewer creative risks, the outlet reported.

SEE ALSO: Who will Kendrick Lamar bring out as special guests during his Super Bowl Halftime performance?

"That’s the challenge this year. Everybody wants to be safe, but you also want to be interesting," Calkins said. "Safe advertising isn’t the advertising you notice or remember."

Despite the relative safety of most of the commercials, plenty put enough weight in nostalgia or simple humor to float to the top. Here are the best commercials of the 2025 Super Bowl so far:

Travis Kelce Super Bowl outfit: The internet verdict is swift

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 16:47

Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs are gunning for a three-peat at the Super Bowl, this time facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles. But before any cleats hit the field, there’s the all-important pregame fashion spectacle. Saquon Barkley, as always, delivered — effortlessly sleek, the man does not miss.

Kelce, on the other hand? He showed up in a 70's-inspired look that can only be described as a choice. The internet, predictably, had thoughts — some heralding the fit as vintage excellence, others questioning whether he lost a bet. Either way, the man knows how to keep us talking.

Kendrick Lamar halftime show surprise: Internet predictions from Drake to Taylor Swift

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 16:11

Kendrick Lamar is about to take the stage for the Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans, and naturally, the internet is deep in its favorite pastime: unhinged speculation.

Will there be another seismic shift in the Kendrick-Drake saga, fresh off the Grammys where "Not Like Us" — a diss track turned song of the summer — won Best Record? Maybe. Will there be a few thinly veiled jabs at President Donald Trump, the first sitting president to grace the Big Game with his presence? Couldn't tell ya. And then there’s the Taylor Swift of it all— she’ll be in the stands, cheering on her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, but could she also make a surprise cameo? Who’s to say?

SEE ALSO: Super Bowl 2025 cheat sheet: Everything you need to know for Chiefs vs. Eagles

We certainly don’t know, but we’ve rounded up the wildest, most diluted, and downright deranged theories about what Kendrick has in store.

Is Taylor Swift joining Kendrick at halftime?

One of the more far-fetched predictions is a Taylor Swift cameo. The mega-pop star will be in the building, and she and Kendrick have history with their 2014 hit "Bad Blood." The chances of her actually appearing on stage are slim, with Vegas setting the odds at +750. Still, if it happens, the internet will implode.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Drake and Trump disses?

If you somehow missed it, in 2024, Drake and Kendrick Lamar had what can only be described as a nuclear rap beef. What started as light jabs from the Toronto rapper spiraled into serious allegations of abuse and trafficking. But it also gave us the undisputed song of the summer.

Kendrick, by his own admission, just does not like Drake. And the rollout — from "Euphoria" to "Meet the Grahams" to "Not Like Us" — made one thing painfully clear: he really, really hates this man. Social media is convinced that tension will spill over into the Halftime Show, with many predicting a few well-placed shots at Drake under the bright lights of the Super Bowl stage.

Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted

Also looming over the performance is the presence of a sitting President Trump, the first time in history a sitting president has attended. Back in 2017, Kendrick admitted he was "baffled" by Trump's election. But don't expect any overt political statements — Kendrick has always been one to show, not tell.

Kendrick Lamar should be allowed to perform a Mortal Kombat style fatality upon Drake at the Super Bowl halftime show presented by Apple. I think that should be a part of the tariff/border discussions

Super Bowl LIX livestream: Watch Eagles vs Chiefs on Tubi today

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 05:16

Super Bowl LIX is just hours away and you can watch it online without cable this year.

The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in this year's edition of the big game, which kicks off at 6:30pm ET on Sunday, Feb. 9 on Fox.

SEE ALSO: What songs will Kendrick Lamar perform at the Super Bowl? Here's our dream setlist.

If the Chiefs win, it will be the first time in the history of the NFL that a team has won three championships in a row. In fact, no two-time defending champion has ever even made it to a third straight Super Bowl, so we're already in uncharted territory. If that wasn't enough of a reason to tune in, the Chiefs and Eagles played one of the best Super Bowls of all time just two years ago.

In other words, this will probably be a pretty good football game on top of the menagerie of commercials and Kendrick Lamar's highly anticipated halftime performance.

But, if you don't pay for cable, you might be wondering how you can watch the game without shelling out for a month of an expensive streaming service. The good news is you don't have to do that at all. Here is how to watch Super Bowl LIX without taking a hammer to your piggy bank.

SEE ALSO: Super Bowl LIX is set: When to watch, halftime show, commercials, and more How to watch Super Bowl LIX without cable for free

This year's game is broadcast on Fox, which means color commentary will be provided by some new guy they just hired named Tom Brady. I hear he's been to a few Super Bowls before. Anyway, in previous years when Fox has broadcast the game, it was available for free via the Fox Sports app.

That is not the case this year. Instead, the game will stream for free on the streaming service Tubi, and that should include all pregame and postgame coverage, all the same commercials people who are watching on regular TV would see, and yes, Kendrick's halftime show.

SEE ALSO: Will Kendrick Lamar diss Drake during the Super Bowl halftime show? Why and why not.

You'll need to make a Tubi account to watch the game, but fortunately, Tubi is a free streaming service by nature. Tubi will be by far the simplest way for most people who don't pay for cable to watch the game.

Who is Black national anthem singer Ledisi?

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 05:08

Super Bowl LIX is in New Orleans this year, so many of the artists set to perform are NOLA natives.

And that includes Ledisi, who performs "Lift Every Voice and Sing," also known as "The Black National Anthem" at 2025's Super Bowl.

Meet Ledisi, an award-winning vocalist and actor

Ledisi is a Grammy award-winning vocalist who began her music career in 1995. She released her debut album, Soulsinger, in 2000 and now has nearly a dozen albums to her name. She has been nominated for numerous awards, accounting for a total of 46 nominations. In 2021, Ledisi won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

SEE ALSO: Super Bowl 2025 performers: Who's singing the anthems?

"Lift Every Voice and Sing" was originally written as a poem in the late 19th century by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson. His brother, John Rosamond Johnson, later put the words to music and in 1919 the NAACP adopted it as its official song. Following the 2020 protests against police brutality in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" began following the national anthem during NFL pre-game ceremonies.

Super Bowl 2025 performers: Whos singing the anthems?

Mashable - Sun, 02/09/2025 - 05:03

It's Super Bowl time! This year's big game, Super Bowl LIX, features a rematch from 2023 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Can the Chiefs win 3-straight championships? Or will the Eagles end their Super Bowl streak?

But, before we found out, we've got to kick off the game. So, who's opening up Super Bowl LIX with the national anthem?

Super Bowl LIX takes place in New Orleans, so the show is filled with artists who call NOLA home.

National anthem: Jon Batiste

Five-time Grammy award winning artist Jon Batiste will sing the national anthem at Super Bowl LIX.

Jon Batiste is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who won Album of the Year in 2021.

If you're not familiar with Batiste strictly as an artist, you've almost certainly heard him on late night TV. Batiste and his band Stay Human served as the official house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert from 2015 to 2022.
