In our breakdown of Dell's CES announcement, Mashable's Haley Henschel noted that the "Dell Pro PCs are posited as the company's new flagship machines and unofficially succeed its Latitude line of business computers. Thin and light, they opt for classy over clunky without sacrificing durability: Dell says one 13-inch model withstood three times as much wear and tear as an HP EliteBook 640 G11 in internal testing."

On top of that, the Dell Pro Premium laptops also feature "Core Ultra Series 2 processors that supposedly offer 36 better multithread performance, 82 percent better graphics rendering performance, and 3.5 times faster AI performance than a Latitude laptop."

These Dell laptops are well worth the investment if you've been looking for an upgrade for work. Check them out right now at Dell.

Humanpods earbuds are Samantha from Her but less dystopian

Mashable - Tue, 01/07/2025 - 05:00

At CES 2025, Swiss tech startup Natura Umana is the latest to dive into the rapidly growing trend of minimalist tech designed to free us from our ever-increasing reliance on smartphones.

Following in the footsteps of devices like the Rabbit R1 and the Humane Pin, Natura’s Humanpods promise to deliver a sleek, hands-free experience powered by a personalized AI assistant. The goal? To redefine how we interact with technology and, hopefully, reduce the dopamine-driven doom scrolls that come with constant phone use.

Thanks to the previous products mentioned, it's easy to be cynical about Humanpods. We got a chance to test out the Humanpods, and based on our initial experience, Natura Umana might have the juice.

SEE ALSO: CES 2025 highlights: What we've seen so far

Humanpods run on Natura's NatureOS, a companion app for iOS and Android that bridges the voice-controlled earbuds and the AI assistant. Through the app, users can engage with "AI People" designed to simulate human-like interactions. Currently, the Humanpods offer three AI personalities: Athena, the fitness trainer; Hector, the therapist; and Nature, a general-purpose assistant. According to Natura, each AI comes with its own distinct personality, and during our demo, we even had the option to have the AIs interact with each other or switch seamlessly between them at our request.

Users can also use other large language models like ChatGPT, Claude AI, and Gemini without the need to open any other app.

The Humanpods are designed with all-day comfort in mind. Natura founder Carlo Edoardo Ferraris said the goal is for users to "put it on in the morning and forget it's there."

SEE ALSO: CES 2025: Acer's new Aspire Vero 16 laptop is partially made from *checks notes* oyster shells

Featuring Natura's patented "Gravity Hooks," the earbuds fit snugly and comfortably, though long-term wearability remains to be seen.

Sound quality impressed during our demo, even in the noisy Caesars Palace convention center. While the AI handled commands well in loud settings, occasional lag and confusion arose when multiple voices interacted within the earbuds' range.

What we’ve seen so far is impressive, but the use of multiple AIs designed to personally get to know you naturally raises privacy concerns. According to the company, it claims that all sensitive information is stored locally and with explicit user permission.

SEE ALSO: 5 new gadgets from CES 2025 that you can actually buy right now

The Humanpods don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but Ferraris expressed confidence that they’ll hit the market sometime in Q1 of this year. As for pricing, the company aims to keep it accessible, targeting a range around $100—comparable to the lower-end Apple AirPods.

If you’re eager to try them, you can join Natura Umana’s waitlist on their website.

Loona is the cutest robot of CES 2025, and its not even close

Mashable - Tue, 01/07/2025 - 05:00

Move over, Mi-Mo and Mirumi: A new "cutest robot at CES" contender has entered the Pepcom floor.

Loona is an AI petbot powered by ChatGPT that charmed the hell out of the packed media showcase in Las Vegas Monday night, zooming up to bystanders to say hi, react to chatter, pretend it's in a wind tunnel, and play fetch with a ball. It's one of two flagship products from KEYi Tech, a Chinese consumer robotics company — the other being a modular, programmable kit called Clicbot — which calls Loona the "ideal companion for families with kids."

Credit: Haley Henschel / Mashable

Standing about a foot tall, Loona has a curved white body with two wheeled arms, a "head" flanked by animated ears, and an expressive "face" display with a camera right below it. The KEYi website says its lead designer created it with his childhood pets and Pixar characters in mind, and that vision seems perfectly executed. If WALL-E and EVE ever figured out a way to procreate, their offspring would probably look exactly like this.

SEE ALSO: The 6 most WTF robots at CES 2025

The way Loona moves and acts is quite dog-like, but acting like the family pet isn't its only purpose in life. It can respond to commands, expressions, and gestures; recognize different people's faces; adapt to its owners' habits; monitor their home when they're away via a companion mobile app; and answer queries conversationally. When I asked it a low-stakes question about which toppings I should put on a pizza, it suggested basil, tomatoes, and maybe jalapeños (if I was feeling wild), then asked what other foods I liked. It was also able to "draw" me a picture upon request from a KEYi rep — basically just a kind-of-ugly generated image, but still. It has a two-hour battery life and puts itself to bed in its charging dock when its runs low on juice.

Admittedly, I'm someone who gets the ick from robots that seem like they're trying too hard to pass the Turing test or bond with me. I know those wiggly ears and that doe-eyed screen are designed to take advantage of my monkey brain’s instinctual penchant for cuteness. But at one point, as I was sitting on the floor of a Venetian ballroom, jotting obversations down in my notebook, Loona came up to me and head-butted my leg, asking for pets. It's got me wrapped around its little wheel.

Credit: Haley Henschel / Mashable

That being said, privacy and data handling concerns are definitely top of mind — especially if children are regularly interacting with the Loona (i.e., training it on their behaviors). According to the KEYi website, "[as] much data processing as possible is done by Loona directly to maximize security & safety." I'd probably want to know a little more before I set Loona loose in my house.

Loona retails for $449 on the KEYi Tech website, where you can bundle it with a game prop kit, a charging dock, and little crocheted outfits. My goodness.

Nikki Glaser reveals what Harrison Ford said to her backstage at the Golden Globes

Mashable - Tue, 01/07/2025 - 04:43

Nikki Glaser didn't pull any punches with her Golden Globes 2025 opening monologue, but how did celebrities react to her roast jokes?

Appearing on The Howard Stern Show, Glaser described meeting Harrison Ford – who was the target of a joke or two himself – backstage at the awards. The good news? He clearly didn't mind being made fun of.

"He did kind of catch me and he walks over and he was like, 'This is such a tough gig, you did such a great job,'" Glaser says in the clip above. "He gave me everything that I wanted, and he said, 'And by the way, you just need to know, there are not speakers in the crowd, if you don't get the reaction you want, we can't hear you. And I'm pretty sure that they could, and that might just be a Harrison Ford issue, but there were pockets that maybe people couldn't hear. But he was so nice and he said, 'Next year, ask for more money.'"

You can watch Glaser's opening monologue here, hear about the jokes she had to cut here, and see the full list of Golden Globes winners here.

Recently upgraded, the Beats Pill is the same speaker we've loved for years but improved. It may appear like a small, unassuming device but it's robust and packs a serious audio punch. This is thanks to the new, bigger, bespoke racetrack woofer displacing 90% more air volume, meaning you get a much deeper, fuller bass.

This speaker also has an IP67 water resistance so it's safe from accidental splashes, whether at the beach or a pool day, or even the really clumsy among us. With the Beats Pill, you're safe. For portable listening, the new 24-hour battery life will keep you going all day long, and can even be used to charge your phone or other devices through a USC cable.

New Satechi hub fixes the most annoying thing about the Mac mini

Mashable - Tue, 01/07/2025 - 04:17

Satechi, a maker of computer, phone, and tablet accessories known for sleek and clever designs, has another banger on its hands.

First shown at CES 2025, the Mac mini M4 Stand and Hub adds more storage and additional ports to Apple's latest Mac mini.

In particular, it adds three USB-A ports, a memory card reader, and the possibility to add SSD storage up to 4TB, thus greatly expanding the Mac mini's maximum 2TB of storage. It also has a fan that should help cool the Mac mini, and it looks pretty much like a flatter version of Apple's miniature computer, meaning it won't ruin its sleek look on your desk.

But the coolest feature of Satechi's new hub is the recess on the back left side, allowing you to easily reach the Mac mini's power button without lifting it.

That's right, Apple placed the new M4 Mac mini's power button on the bottom, requiring one to lift the device a little to reach it. But with the Satechi's new hub, the feat should be a little easier to perform.

The Satechi hub connects to the Mac mini via a short Thunderbolt cable, meaning it will take up one of its ports on the back, but it's probably a fair trade for the added functionality.

Satechi's new Mac Mini M4 Stand & Hub with SSD Enclosure will hit the market in February for a price of $99.

The Skylight Calendar will keep me sane (and organized) in 2025

Mashable - Tue, 01/07/2025 - 04:15

The Skylight Calendar was one of the hottest gifts of the year, and for good reason. If you're determined to stay more organized in 2025, the Skylight Calendar is a practical (and fun) way to keep track of your calendar, to-do list, grocery list, and chores.

Yes, you could get an Echo Show device, but if you're not an Amazon Echo household, you might not need all the features that come with an Echo Show. Think of the Skylight Calendar as the Kindle of digital home displays: It gives you everything you need, and nothing extra. There's no access to browsers, no additional apps, and no smart home control. It's just a straightforward digital calendar that syncs up with your existing Google, iCloud, Microsoft, Yahoo, or Cozi calendars, and gives you organizational tools to stay on top of all your to-do lists.

I juggle quite a few activities on a weekly basis, and it can be rough managing a busy schedule. I'm a journalist and editor, a dog trainer, and I work at a kennel one day per week. On top of hanging out with friends and managing my day-to-day household chores, I was starting to forget appointments and generally felt disorganized. My partner was constantly asking me, "What do you have going on today?" to which I usually responded with, "I'm not sure." Once I got the Skylight calendar, my life instantly felt more organized.

It took about 20 minutes to get the Skylight Calendar out of the box, mounted on the wall, and synced to my Google Calendar. The test unit I tried is the massive 27-inch Calendar Max, which is more of a small TV than a tablet. Note that the Max size was on backorder at the time of writing, and is expected to arrive at the end of January.

The other sizes of the Skylight Calendar can be wall-mounted or used on top of a table or counter with a stand, but the Max size needs to be wall-mounted. It comes with a handy paper mounting guide to make sure you drill the holes in the right spots, and the mounting bracket is a lightweight metal piece, so it only requires one person to install. The only tool required for installation is a drill — the calendar comes with everything else you need (including a level built into the mounting bracket).

Once the mounting bracket is drilled into the wall, you simply slide the screen onto it, then you can commence the actual calendar setup. Of the calendars I synced with Skylight, Google Calendars was the easiest. Just download the Skylight app, click on sync a new calendar, then select Google, and the app will prompt you to log into the Gmail account associated with the calendar you want to sync. You can then select which specific calendars you want to sync to the skylight, and it'll load all your existing events to the device.

To sync an iCloud calendar, you need to find the iCloud calendar's URL and paste it into the Skylight app. I found syncing Skylight to iCloud to be more finicky than Google, and it took me a few tries to get it to sync up properly.

The only qualm I have about the setup is that the plastic frame that came with the calendar didn't quite fit on the screen. One of the pieces was too long to fit properly around the screen. The unit looks just as good without the frame though, so I just took it off.

If you're sharing a vehicle with a partner, or need to keep track of who's picking up the kids or running the dog to the groomer, the Skylight Calendar will keep everything arranged (and visible) to all members of your household.

You can sync multiple calendars and assign colors to each person, so you know who needs to be where, and when. I love the to-do lists and chores lists you can assign to each family member, and the rewards feature is great for kids. The more they complete their chores, the more stars they earn. You set how many stars equal a reward, and you can set different rewards for different amounts of stars.

You can also make grocery lists and manage meal plans with the Sklylight calendar, though the meal planning function requires a Skylight Plus subscription.

The Skylight Calendar comes in three different sizes and price points: The 10-inch calendar is $159.99, the 15-inch calendar is $299.99, and the 27-inch Calendar Max is $599.99 from Skylight's website. The 15-inch calendar is also available at Amazon, but it's more expensive than buying directly from Skylight — $319.99 compared to Skylight's $299.99. Skylight also frequently runs small discounts on its calendars, and you can save anywhere from an additional $10 to $30 by buying it directly from Skylight.

Though the huge display on the Calendar Max is visually appealing and makes it easy to see from far away, the size (and price) is likely overkill for most households. It feels like it would be more suited in a small business or an office because of the size. The smaller sizes of the Skylight Calendar feel more practical and are a bit easier on the budget than the Calendar Max.

If you want to use the photo screensaver feature (basically, using your calendar as a Skylight digital photo frame), you'll need to purchase a subscription. The photo screensaver feature cycles through uploaded photos when the calendar isn't being used, and your family and friends can send photos to the Calendar so you can stay connected. This is probably the most important feature that's missing without purchasing the subscription. Without it, you'll also miss out on access to Meal Planning and Magic Import (which adds calendar events from uploaded PDFs). These features are nice but don't feel totally necessary. With that being said, the subscription is only $39 per year, so if you want to use the photo screensaver function, it's worth the added cost.

Is the Skylight Calendar worth it? The photo screensaver feature is a great way to stay connected with family and revisit memories. Credit: Jae Thomas / Mashable

Yes, you could just share your Google calendar with everyone in your household for free, but having a hub to look at and add/change events, meetings, appointments, and to-do lists makes me more likely to stay organized. I find myself getting little hits of dopamine when I check things off my to-do lists, and it's easier for me and my partner to stay in sync on where we'll both be during the week. I truly wish I had this when we were sharing a car — it would have saved us many arguments and miscommunications about scheduling.

If you have a big family or lots of appointments to keep track of, the Skylight Calendar is a user-friendly device that encourages you to stay in the know about what's going on in your family/household's life. I think the smaller options are worth the price, even if just for the amount of stress it's taken off my shoulders around scheduling.

Nikki Glaser shares the jokes she had to cut from her Golden Globes monologue

Mashable - Tue, 01/07/2025 - 04:12

Nikki Glaser didn't appear to hold back in her Golden Globes 2025 monologue, but apparently there were a few jokes she had to cut.

"Some of these would get pitched and were like, 'We can't say that on TV, we cannot say that to these people's faces," Glaser tells Howard Stern in the clip above, before rattling off a few examples of the jokes she decided not to say:

"This is the last time all of you will be in the same room together until the Diddy trial."

"Only Murders in the Building is amazing, and I think it's so cool that legends like Steve Martin, Martin Short and Meryl Streep are still at it, putting out some of the best performances of their careers. It's so inspiring and it just goes to show you: You are never too old to still need money. Please don't fight Jake Paul."

"The Wild Robot is nominated tonight, and by that I mean Nicole Kidman after two white wines."

"Nicolas Cage is here tonight, looking well rested after a night of sleeping in Elvis' coffin."

You can watch Glaser's opening monologue here, and see the full list of Golden Globes winners here.
