The most immediate difference between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 is the color selection. While both phones share the same aluminum-and-glass design and Super Retina XDR display, the 16e doesn’t get the same color palette as the 16. The latter comes in five colors:

The 16e, however, is limited to just black and white. If color variety matters, that’s something to keep in mind.

Today, Apple unveiled the brand new iPhone 16e. A new iPhone SE model had been long-rumored, as it had been so long since Apple refreshed the lineup. And at $599, the iPhone 16e is the most affordable of Apple's latest generation of smartphones.

However, with the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple has discontinued three older generation iPhone models that it was still selling. On Wednesday, Apple pulled the plug on the iPhone SE, iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

Apple usually discontinues an older generation model of iPhones when it introduces a brand new one, so this isn't unexpected. However, the iPhone 16e is a pretty big price jump from the previous SE model, from a $429 starting price to a $599 pricepoint. So, we're now looking at a minimum of $600 if you want an iPhone.

In addition, the iPhone SE was the last iPhone model to have a physical "Home" button. The iPhone 16e does not have one, so it seems the "Home" button has died along with the end of the old iPhone SE line.

Like the previous iPhone SE model, the iPhone 14 was launched in 2022. It has since been succeeded by both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. In fact, the iPhone 16e makes for a similar yet more powerful replacement for the iPhone 14 as well. So, the loss of the iPhone 14 isn't really a big deal.

However, for users wanting a larger iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus served as the cheapest available option. There is no new similarly priced, similarly designed replacement. Now, users who simply want a bigger-sized iPhone will have to pay more for one.

At a time when AI is already replacing gig workers, Fiverr says they're taking a different approach.

On Wednesday, the freelancing marketplace announced a program for users to train AI on their own body work and use it for future creative projects. The program, called the Personal AI Creation Model is part of a larger AI initiative called Fiverr Go, designed to let freelancers use AI's automation capabilities as a tool rather than be replaced by it.

"It’s a recognition that there’s a growing demand and cultural headwind behind supporting workers and creators amid the AI blitz," Brian Merchant, tech journalist and author of Luddite uprising saga Blood in the Machine, told Mashable in an X message.

"Instead of letting creators be exploited, Fiverr Go ensures they receive proper credit and compensation while giving them unprecedented tools to scale their work," said CEO Micha Kaufman in the announcement. "This is about making our freelancers irreplaceable, not obsolete."

A late 2024 study from the Harvard Business Review found a "steep decrease" in demand for coding and creative jobs following the introduction of ChatGPT and widescale release of AI image generating tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E. The gig economy is already precarious for workers since they face competition with each other and don't have the benefits and protections that come with full time jobs. Now gig workers are forced to compete with generative AI — often trained on their own work – which can code, write, create images, audio, and video, and doesn't need to sleep or eat.

It's a novel approach to adopting AI, especially since some companies have blatantly opted to lay off and replace workers with AI automation in other industries. Fiverr competitors like Upwork and PeoplePerHour have implemented AI assistants to connect customers with freelancers — something that Fiverr also launched on Wednesday. But as far as we know, none have directly embraced leveraging genAI for its creators.

"In theory, this seems to be the right way to engage AI, with workers in mind — as long as the terms are good, approved by workers and creators, and actually equitable," said Merchant. "You do worry that this is paying lip service to creators without delivering — as for example Adobe did with its program that offered artists compensation for letting their work be trained but really didn’t benefit them much."

Fiverr's AI Creation Model gives freelancers "control over their creative process and rights," allowing creators to "configure their models" and "set their prices" said the press release. The program will be available in categories including voiceover, songwriting, graphic design, copywriting, and marketing.

Customers can pay to download AI-generated works created by freelancers or "contact the freelancer of an AI-generated work as a starting point for a project, as an example or inspiration, and ask for a specific service," said a Fiverr spokesperson to TechCrunch.

But training AI on your own work and making money from its creations isn't free. AI Creation Models cost $25 a month and are initially limited to "top, vetted freelancers." The AI personal booking assistant is available as part of the Seller Plus Premium plan for $29 a month. So we'll let you crunch the numbers and decide whether it's worth it.

Apple announced the iPhone 16e Wednesday, its first budget smartphone in three years — and its first-ever smartphone with an in-house cellular modem.

The iPhone 16e will be available in matte black and white finishes and start at $599 (or $24.95 per month for 24 months). Customers can get up to $170 in credit by buying it through the Apple Store and trading in an older Apple phone, or up to $599 in credit with a trade-in at eligible third-party carriers.

Preorders open on Friday, Feb. 21, ahead of the iPhone 16e's formal launch a week later on Feb. 28.

That camera is something Apple calls a 48-megapixel 2-in-1 camera system, as it doubles as a regular camera and a 2x telephoto camera.

Inside, the iPhone 16e has Apple's powerful A18 chip, as well as the Apple C1, which is the first cellular modem designed in-house by Apple. This also means that the iPhone 16e can support Apple Intelligence, just like its other iPhone 16 brothers.

Storage starts at 128GB, but you can also get the iPhone 16e with 256GB or 512GB of storage.

Battery life is going to be a big selling point for the iPhone 16e, as Apple claims that it has "the best battery life ever on a 6.1-inch iPhone. Compared to the old iPhone SE, that's 12 hours more of battery life.

As far as colors go, you don't get a lot: The iPhone 16e is only available in matte white and matte black - an interesting choice given the far more colorful iPhone 16.

Other tidbits of note: The iPhone 16e is splash, water, and dust resistant. It has the Action Button (just like the other iPhone 16 models), and yes, it also has satellite connectivity.

So why is this launch a big deal? Well, the iPhone SE was always in its own limbo, doing its own thing, mostly unrelated to whatever the main iPhone lineup was at any given time. But the iPhone 16e signals that Apple might turn this late winter launch into a regular thing, with the iPhone 16e being followed up by the iPhone 17e next year, and so forth.

The phone itself is also more powerful than was expected, and more similar to the iPhone 16 lineup. This is another big change, and it means that from now on, there will always be a "cheap" but current iPhone you can choose if the main lineup is too price (remember, a new iPhone SE only showed up every couple of years, like a comet).

The Apple iPhone 16e starts at $599, and will be available for pre-order on February 21, with availability starting on Friday, February 28.

Instagram wants to be your hub for messaging, a priority made all the clearer on Wednesday when it launched five new features with the help of global superstars JENNIE and Doechii.

Users can now translate messages in 99 different languages within their DMs. All you have to do is hard press on the message you want translated — similar to what you'd do if you wanted to reply, forward, or copy the message — and click "translate." You can also schedule messages up to 29 days in advance on Instagram DMs, a move that shortly follows the similar "Send Later" feature on iMessage.

Pinning messages is coming to Instagram DMs, too, and this feature doesn't seem to be directly inspired by one of Meta's competitors. Nice! Much like translating, all you have to do is hard press on the message you want pinned and select "pin."

You can share music in DMs now, too, which was launched with an IG broadcast from JENNIE and Doechii. You can find this by clicking the sticker icon in the bottom right of a DM and clicking the music icon.

Finally, in a move that's going to revolutionize stickers in dive bar bathrooms, you can invite people to a group chat with a QR code.

A few of these features have already been rolled out in some countries, but this announcement shows the testing was successful enough to roll them out globally.

I’ve gone through way too many budget wireless earbuds. Most of them sound awful, die after a few months, or refuse to stay in my ears. So when I saw Woot (which is run by Amazon, by the way) drop Samsung Galaxy Buds FE to just $49.99, I figured I’d give them a shot. It turns out they’re actually pretty solid.
