A Best Buy sale during Prime Day? Almost definitely.

In the same way that Black Friday has become more of a season than a singular day, the entire month of July could aptly be called Prime Day season at this point. Past the sheer deal count at the behemoth that started it all, it's become tradition for other huge retailers like Best Buy respond to Amazon with a major sale event of their own — lining up on or near Prime Day, of course.

SEE ALSO: Just in time for Prime Day, Target's Circle Week is back July 7 through 13

Hot on the heels of Best Buy's 4th of July sale, Best Buy is surely set to release dates for another summer sale any day now. We can use context clues like the official dates for Amazon's Prime Day, which runs July 16 and 17, to predict the dates Best Buy is eyeing. For instance, during the fall version of Prime Day in 2023, Best Buy ran a 48-hour Flash Sale on Oct. 11 and 12 — the same days Amazon chose.

Where Best Buy beats Amazon

It's true that there are a ton of overlapping deals at both Best Buy and Amazon during these events. But both stores also have their own unique strong points, and there are also plenty of opportunities to shop strategically within certain product categories.

While Amazon's discounts typically extend to a wider variety of product categories from a huge crop of stores and sellers, Best Buy has a history of beating Amazon's deals in several major tech categories. Best Buy tends to have a much more reliable slew of TVs and laptops on sale, compared to Amazon's shorter lists composed of a smaller variety of brands (and which are also more likely to be bogged down by iffy third-party sellers). Meanwhile, Amazon typically wins when it comes to home stuff, like robot vacuum deals and kitchen deals.

Best Buy doesn't gatekeep its deals quite like Amazon does, generally leaving most discounts available to the public and reserving a handful of exclusive discounts on premium brands like Samsung or Dyson for paid My Best Buy Plus or My Best Buy Total members. Amazon does, however, surprise some shoppers with access to invite-only deals, which features some pretty jaw-dropping price cuts on items like headphones or Fire TVs that you definitely won't find anywhere else.

SEE ALSO: Walmart vs. Amazon: Which retail giant has the best deals?

Throughout the entire year, Best Buy also does this thing called Best Buy Drops: a feature found only on the Best Buy mobile app that gives shoppers a heads-up about upcoming "drops" of high-profile items and deals in categories like gaming, cheap TVs, fan-favorite pop culture merch, high-profile hair tools, kitchen gadgets, and more. As long as you have the Best Buy mobile app, you can preview what's coming on what day that week so that you're ready to click "add to cart" when the item or deal goes live.

Similar to many Prime deals, only a certain number of Drop items can be claimed while the offer is live, and then they sell out. Unlike Prime deals, Best Buy does drops about three times a week throughout the entire year.

For a more granular assessment of the best deals between the two, check out our favorite Best Buy deals below and our running list of the best Prime Day deals in every category.

If you're eyeing a Fire TV this Prime Day season, don't automatically opt for the Omni on name recognition alone. While Amazon's own in-house Fire TVs are on sale, you definitely won't be seeing one of those 75-inch bad boys go on sale for less than $500. Toshiba's well-reviewed C35- Fire TV, however, is a different story. The C350 admittedly is a basic 4K TV that's definitely decent enough for casual living room watching or light gaming, especially if you care more about getting the biggest screen for your buck over specs.

The 5th gen Air also sees upgrades like an Ultra Wide 12MP front camera and faster wireless connectivity.

For $150 less than the 14-inch MacBook Pro, you can bump up to a 16-inch display with OLED backlighting by snagging the Asus Vivobook Pro during Best Buy's 4th of July sale. That beast of a display comes with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card and runs a 120Hz refresh rate, making it one of your best bets for securing a high-powered work laptop that's just as upstanding for gaming.

If you don't care to wait for other premium pairs like the Sony WH-1000XM5 to drop below $300, Sennheiser's Momentum 4 headphones would be a stellar choice. While the vibrant audio and effective ANC is all well and good, the standout feature for the Momentum 4 is easily the battery life — you can listen for 60 hours on a single charge. That beats the 24 hour max of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra.

An individual subscription to Apple Music costs $10.99 a month, so that's a total value of $21.98. Windows 11 Notepad gets spellcheck, autocorrect 41 years later

Mashable - Mon, 07/08/2024 - 11:55

Microsoft quietly rolled out spellcheck and autocorrect features to Windows 11 Notepad over the last few days, per The Verge.

These additions went into limited preview testing back in March, but now they're available for all. This is pretty wild because Notepad has been around in some form or another since 1983 and only got spellcheck now.

SEE ALSO: The best Windows laptop of 2024 so far: 17-hour battery life and MacBook-beating performance

Naturally, it seems to work more or less the same way as it does in Microsoft Word, where squiggly lines underneath a misspelled word will be your key to fixing it with a right click. The Verge pointed out that you can turn off spellcheck and autocorrect for individual file types (primarily those associated with coding), and of course, you can turn them off altogether, too.

Notepad was never really meant to be the home of the kind of long-form writing that benefits from spellcheck, but if you want to use it for that, now you can.

How this law is protecting child influencers in Illinois

Mashable - Mon, 07/08/2024 - 11:23

A law protecting child influencers in Illinois has officially gone into effect.

The state passed a bill into law in August 2023, after it was introduced by Democratic Sen. David Koehler. It has now been implemented since July 1, 2024, as a part of Illinois' existing Child Labor Law, stating that children under the age of 16 "perform[ing] in an artistic or creative service" are entitled to compensation from their parent or guardians' digital content.

SEE ALSO: Child influencers in Illinois can now sue their parents

These posts are defined by the state as "content shared on an online platform in exchange for compensation." The law states that if a child is present in at least 30 percent of a parent or guardian's social media posts over the course of a month (30 days), they are entitled to a share of the revenue obtained. The funds will have to be put aside into a trust that the child can access upon turning 18. If a parent fails to comply, their children have the right to take action.

As Mashable reported last year, the law was brought to Sen. Koehler's attention after Shreya Nallamothu, an Illinois-based teen, raised the issue. Nallamothu wrote a letter to the senator, telling CNN about the permanence of online content: "The fact that these kids are either too young to grasp that or weren’t given the chance to grasp that is really sad."

The law could be a fundamental step in the right direction, paving the way for other states to follow. According to Rolling Stone, other states like Maryland, California, and Wisconsin are considering similar action. Illinois is the first state to actually implement this kind of legislation so far.

Efforts to protect child influencers have heightened in recent years. High-profile cases involving children and family influencers, including the arrest of vlogger Ruby Franke and case against YouTube mother Tiffany Smith, have brought necessary attention to the cause.

Apple Watch 10 tipped to get these 3 new features — but blood-pressure sensor faces 'snags'

Mashable - Mon, 07/08/2024 - 09:24

The Apple Watch Series 10, which could potentially be called "Apple Watch X" to celebrate the smartwatch's 10-year-anniversary, is getting several key upgrades, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman via his Power On newsletter.

Gurman claims that users who dig the Apple Watch Ultra's big screen, but don't want to pay Apple Watch Ultra prices, can enjoy a similar display with the next Apple Watch Series inductee. Check out the other features that will reportedly debut on the Apple Watch Series 10.

SEE ALSO: Apple Watch Series 9 vs. SE: I tested both for 13 days Apple Watch 10: 3 new features

As mentioned, the 10th-generation Apple Watch will get bigger screen that is as large as the Apple Watch Ultra. Gurman also claims that the Apple Watch Series 10 will have two variants codenamed N217 and N218; both will feature options for a larger panel.

There's also some scuttlebutt that the next Apple Watch will be thinner than the previous model (e.g., Apple Watch Series 9). But overall, there won't be any major design changes, Gurman said.

Finally, the Apple Watch Series 10 is getting a new chip, alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 3, that will "lay the ground work" for compatibility with Apple Intelligence and other AI-powered features.

There have been rumors about Apple possibly adding a blood-pressure sensor and a sleep apnea utility in the Watch 10, but according to Gurman, the Cupertino-based tech giant has been facing "some serious snags" with these tools.

Although Gurman is a credible source for Apple rumors, we won't know for sure until we hear from the horse's mouth. We expect to see the next Apple Watch very soon, as it will likely debut alongside the iPhone 16 in September.

How digital driver's licenses work

Mashable - Mon, 07/08/2024 - 07:43

North Carolina is introducing digital driver's licenses by summer 2025, with the option being given to residents as a replacement for the traditional, physical license.

Those opting in will have their digital ID stored in a secure app on their phone, as reported by ZDNET. The license will hold all the same information as a physical ID, and can be updated as needed. Some states allow the IDs to be added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet on a mobile device.

SEE ALSO: This bicycle light uses AI to keep you safe from bad drivers

The state joins a growing list of states that have active or developing digital license programs: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, and Utah. A dozen other states are planning to bring the program to life, with programs in early stages of development or soon to be implemented.

Louisiana was the first to introduce the program in 2018, and by 2023, 66 percent of eligible adults opted for a digital ID. The convenience of the ID is likely its broadest appeal, though people may have questions about security. IDScan.net says that these digital IDs require biometric access to set up the feature, and additional verification follows.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked July 2024: How to watch

Mashable - Mon, 07/08/2024 - 05:06

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked is just around the corner, bringing with it new gadgets, more AI integration, and the potential for a big announcement or two. Here's how to watch July 2024's Samsung Galaxy Unpacked.

How to watch Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024

Like previous years, Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 will be livestreamed on both its official website and YouTube channel (embedded below). The broadcast is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT on July 10. If this seems early it's because the in-person event is being hosted in Paris, where it will kick off at 3 p.m.

What can we expect at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024?

Samsung has historically used Unpacked to launch new gadgets, and 2024 looks to be no different. First taking place in 2009, the biannual event is dedicated to showcasing Samsung's latest smartphones, tablets, and wearables, featuring keynote talks by the tech giant's executives.

As such, several significant announcements are expected at this month's Unpacked, which will also focus on Samsung's AI integration.

Tech companies are obsessed with AI right now, and Samsung is no exception. We may not see a Samsung AI announcement as significant as January's unveiling of Galaxy AI. Even so, we can definitely expect an update on the suite of generative AI tools.

Samsung has been teasing the "next frontier of Galaxy AI" in the lead up to its mid-year Unpacked event, hinting at further AI integration into its devices. Galaxy AI currently includes features such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, and even Edit Suggestions for photos.

Galaxy Unpacked may also include news on the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Ring — and perhaps even a launch of the finger-sized wearable. Designed to track metrics such as your sleep and heart health, Samsung's smart ring is intended to complement the company's smartwatches rather than replace them.

We've known that Samsung has been developing the Galaxy Ring since it was first teased in January, however July could be the month we're finally told when we can slip it on our fingers.

Samsung's Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6

Samsung typically refreshes its flip and fold smartphones around July or August, and we have no reason to think 2024 will be an exception. While 2024's first Unpacked focused on Samsung's Galaxy S42 smartphone line (including the Galaxy S24 Ultra, S24+, and S24), July's event will likely introduce a new generation of foldables: The Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.

Leaks suggest that Samsung's Z Flip 6 will be upgraded to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, putting it on par with the Galaxy S24, as well as a 50MP main camera (up from the Z Flip 5's 12MP). It will also receive a boost to its battery, increasing from 3,700mAh 4,000mAh.

Performance isn't the only area where we're likely to see improvement, though. Leaked images indicate that both the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will have slimmer hinges than their predecessors, with Samsung continuing to streamline its foldable devices' hardware.

Galaxy Watch 7

There's also a good chance we'll get some news about Samsung's smartwatches. Leaks late last month revealed that the Galaxy Watch 7 will be available in a 40-millimetre size as well as the colour "Cream," though it's expected that Samsung will offer further options as well. Samsung's Galaxy Watch 6 comes in both 40-millimetre and 44-millimetre, and has different colourways.

The Galaxy Watch 7 will also take full advantage of Samsung's focus on AI. The wearable will include a number of AI-powered features, including a "Personalized Daily AI companion" which will enable "AI Powered Sleep, AI Powered Exercise, and AI Powered Communication." Barring any further leaks, we'll just have to wait for Samsung's official announcement to find out exactly what all that means.
