The White House accuses Amazon of hostile act over reported tariff surcharge

Mashable - 4 hours 39 min ago

Prices on Amazon have already increased as a result of President Trump's tariffs, and Amazon wants you to know it's not their fault.

According to Punchbowl News report, Amazon will soon start showing customers the tariff costs of products. The site will reportedly display "how much of an item’s cost is derived from tariffs — right next to the product’s total listed price." Up to 70 percent of products on Amazon are imported from China, and the U.S. is currently imposing up to 145 percent levies on Chinese goods. The tariffs on China will have reverberations throughout the global supply chain, and Amazon doesn't want to be blamed for rising consumer costs.

So far, Mashable hasn't been able to confirm the Punchbowl News report, but The White House has already reacted, calling it a "hostile and political act by Amazon." This came from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who added, "it’s not a surprise because Amazon has partnered with a Chinese propaganda arm."

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

The president's tariffs have already affected the cost of certain products sold on Amazon. Anker, the Chinese electronics company known for its power banks and chargers, has raised its prices on Amazon by an average of 18 percent since the tariffs were imposed.

On a related note, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday that Amazon is "seeking steep discounts from suppliers" in order to protect its profit margins and continue selling imported goods at low prices. Also on Tuesday, Amazon confirmed that Prime Day 2025 will take place in July, though the tariff situation makes this year's event slightly more complicated.

Amazon is scheduled to share its first quarter earnings report this Thursday, where tariffs will likely be a big theme. Mashable has reached out to Amazon for comment and will update this story if we receive a response.

Why are retailers so eager to get rid of MacBook Airs? Prices start at $799

Mashable - 5 hours 3 min ago

SAVE UP TO 38%: Both the Apple MacBook Air M3 and the Apple MacBook Air M4 have hit new all-time low prices with the M3 (15 inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB) coming in at $799, down from the normal price of $1,299 and the M4 (13 inch, 16GB RAM, 256GB) coming in at $849, down from the standard price of $999.

Best MacBook Air deals Best MacBook M4 deal Apple MacBook Air, 13 inch (M4, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $849 (save $150) Get Deal Best MacBook Air M3 deal Apple MacBook Air, 15 inch (M3, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $799 (save $500) Get Deal

We've all been stressed about fluctuating tariffs and higher prices in pretty much every aspect of life. So when we spot top-of-the-line laptops hitting record-low prices, we're both elated and also perplexed. Regardless of emotions, the numbers don't lie — now is a really great time to grab a new Apple MacBook Air.

As of April 29, the most affordable option is the 15-inch Apple MacBook Air (M3, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $799 at B&H Photo, down from the standard price of $1,299 which works out to a 38% discount that shaves $500 of the normal price.

You can also go with the latest model and score a 13-inch Apple MacBook Air (M4, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) for $849 at Amazon, down from the normal price of $999. That works out to a 15% discount that'll save you $150, matching the lowest price we've ever seen at Amazon.

Why are MacBooks Air dropping in price? It's anyone's guess, but we'll take it, especially in this economy. The MacBook Air with an M4 processor was only released in March which means seeing these discounts less than two months after launch is ultra exciting.

SEE ALSO: Best MacBooks of 2025: Which MacBook should you buy?

Mashable Senior Editor Stan Schroeder was impressed with the newest model and wrote in his review, "The new MacBook Air is great. It's powerful, silent, and comes with a couple of much-needed upgrades. It's also cheaper than before, making it the best-buy Apple laptop, period."

Since most affordable M4 comes in at just $50 more than the most affordable M3 (while they're both on sale) grabbing the M4 seems like a no-brainer. It also comes with double the RAM — 16GB instead of the 8GB from the M3. However, the $849 sale price on the MacBook Air with M4 processor is for a 13-inch model. If you're all about size, the 15-inch MacBook Air with M3 processor for $799 might be your best bet. But keep in mind, MacBooks are well known as fantastic laptops, so you're not gonna go wrong with either pick here.

Since we have no idea what the future prices of tech will do, snag a MacBook Air now while it's on sale for a record-low price.

Its official: Prime Day returns in July 2025, tariffs and all

Mashable - 5 hours 4 min ago

Prime Day 2025 is officially coming in July, Amazon announced in a press release early on April 29.

Not that anyone thought Prime Day wasn't happening this year or anything, but the buzz surrounding such a huge sale event does have a slightly different energy when many people have a recession on the brain.

From electronics to cleaning supplies to clothes, President Donald Trump's tariffs have caused price increases and general economic chaos. And many of the everyday items getting more expensive are Prime Day classics. The official post doesn't actually mention tariffs, of course, but Bezos and friends are well aware of the economic stress that many Prime members are experiencing. Given that intel, we wouldn't be surprised if this is finally the year that Amazon makes Prime Day longer than the usual 48 hours.

SEE ALSO: Walmart+ members get ready — Walmart+ Week is live through May 4

For now, Amazon has confirmed that it's blocked out time for Prime Day in its typical July time slot, but the exact dates of Prime Day 2025 haven't been disclosed yet. Amazon announced the specific dates for Prime Day 2024 (July 16 and 17) in late June, when it also began releasing some early Prime Day deals.

If Prime Day 2025 mimics the typical schedule we've been seeing for the past few years, we can assume it'll start on a Tuesday in early-to-mid July and run for two days. You could roughly pencil in July 8 through 11 or July 15 through 18 for Prime Day 2025, though again, the two-day window isn't set in stone.

And with this Amazon deal, you can save big on a device that can make that happen.

As of April 29, get the Jackery Explorer Portable Power Station for $449, down from its usual price of $799. That's $350 off and a discount of 44%.

It's just 23.8 lbs with a 1,070Wh capacity, making it easy to tote around, and it can handle just about any power-centric situation you can think of. Best of all, it has a simple built-in foldable handle so you can lift it in and out of a car or carry around or from your home without awkward drops or falls.

After your power station's charge is depleted, it can be charged from 0% to 100% in just an hour with emergency charging through the Jackery App. Otherwise, it'll take about 1.7 hours for a full charge, so you won't be sitting around waiting for long to get it back up to speed. It has two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, one DC car port, and three sine wave AC ports to handle all your devices at once as well.

Summer is right around the corner, and that means potential bad weather. Keep this portable power station around just in case, and save some money while being prepared.

Weapons trailer teases a very creepy mass disappearance

Mashable - 5 hours 59 min ago

First we had a very eerie teaser, and now Weapons – the new horror movie from Barbarian writer/director Zach Cregger – has an equally unsettling trailer.

The story revolves around a school where all the children but one in a class go missing on the same night at the exact same time, leaving their houses and running into the darkness with their arms stretched out at their sides.

Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, with Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan star in what looks like a creepy summer movie worth keeping on your radar.

Weapons opens in theaters Aug. 8.

This Is Spinal Tap re-release trailer cranks it up to 11

Mashable - 6 hours 40 min ago

It's been 41 years since Rob Reiner's This Is Spinal Tap cranked things up to 11 in the mockumentary space in 1984. Now it's prepping for the comeback tour of the ages with Bleecker Street and Fathom Entertainment re-releasing the film in 4K in cinemas this summer.

And this time, a puppet show is not the headliner.

Created by Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, This Is Spinal Tap follows England's loudest band on the road (well, at least "one louder" than everyone else, thanks to Nigel's amps). The band's all here: David St. Hubbins (McKean) and Nigel Tufnel (Guest) on vocals and guitar, Derek Smalls (Shearer) on bass, Viv Savage (David Kaff) on keys, and Mick Shrimpton (Atomic Rooster drummer R.J. Parnell) on drums.

A tale of doomed drummers dying in bizarre gardening accidents, none more black album cover art, an ill-advised experimental jazz odyssey, miniature bread on the rider, two-word reviews, and an iconic Fran Drescher appearance, This Is Spinal Tap defies explanation. It's the kind of film fans try to explain to their friends but would be better off just showing them — believe me, playing the song "Stonehenge" for your unsuspecting mates as you're approaching the actual Stonehenge is not the sublime intro you think it will be.

The re-release has been timed to bring new audiences in for the long-awaited sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, on Sept. 12, with the cast reprising their now iconic roles and a host of cameos promised including Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John.

This Is Spinal Tap Golden 41st Anniversary Re-Release hits cinemas July 5 to 7.

Heres one good thing about Apple Intelligence: All iPhones will have more RAM because of it

Mashable - 7 hours 50 min ago

Long-promised Apple Intelligence features have finally trickled down to most iPhones, but the reactions are lukewarm. Early users weren't very interested according to this survey, and there are reports that Apple is internally disappointed at just how little its users are interacting with AI.

Personally, I've found Apple Intelligence nice to have but not essential.

There's one great thing about Apple Intelligence, though: Since it requires a lot of RAM to operate properly, Apple will reportedly be equipping all of its iPhone 17 models with 12GB of RAM. This is according to recent leaks from China, as well as reports from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

That's a big step up from the 8GB of RAM that you'll find in all of the iPhone 16 models. It's also rare for Apple to increase the amount of RAM so dramatically in all of its new iPhones, even the most affordable among them, the iPhone 17.

The company doesn't necessarily need to do it; current models support AI with just 8GB of RAM, and Kuo says Apple hasn't yet decided whether it will launch all its new iPhones with 12GB of RAM. But the increase would likely make these iPhones super-smooth, and would pave the way for future, more advanced AI features.

Even if you don't particularly care about AI, getting more RAM in even the basic model is good news for everyone, as it'll make the phone quicker and more responsive — if Apple doesn't increase the price, that is.

SEE ALSO: Apple is reportedly still working on smart glasses of some kind

The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be revealed in early September. Apple will reportedly add an entirely new, super-thin device to the lineup, possibly called the iPhone 17 Air.

Seth Meyers reacts to Trumps bizarre Time interview transcript on Late Night

Mashable - 7 hours 52 min ago

Donald Trump's recent interview with Time went viral after the wildly ridiculous transcript was shared online, and Seth Meyers has thoughts.

"In the span of maybe 30 seconds, Trump claims that Biden would never do the same interview, finds out Biden did do the same interview, asks how Biden did in that interview, claims he saw the interview he didn't know Biden did, and said Biden did badly in the interview he said Biden never would do," summarises Meyers in the Late Night clip above.

"No wonder we don't have any f***ing trade deals with other countries yet, every interview with Trump sounds like a Vaudeville routine!"

Best 55-inch and under TVs for your bedroom, the kids room, or your apartment

Mashable - 9 hours 44 min ago

Bigger isn’t always better, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to TVs. Your living room TV is free to be as large as you’d like, but some rooms call for a smaller TV. And as a bonus, smaller models are often more affordable than larger TVs.

Outfitting a kids' room with a TV, snagging one for the garage, or buying a TV for a studio apartment are all reasons why a 55-inch-or-under model might work best for your space. As is standard when buying any size TV, you’ll be facing an overwhelming number of options that call for some decisions, like whether you want OLED or QLED and what kind of refresh rate you’re looking for. Before you fall into a Googling frenzy, check out what the experts say.

How to shop for a new TV

Aside from choosing a laptop, TVs are probably next in line for the amount of jargon you’ll need to decode while shopping. If you’re not interested in becoming a TV expert, Mashable's sister site, PCMag, has a team of experts who test TVs with fancy equipment like a Klein K-80 colorimeter, a Murideo SIX-G signal generator, an HDFury Diva 4K HDMI matrix, and Portrait Displays’ Calman software. Since you don’t have that tech in your garage (you wouldn’t be reading this if you did), PCMag’s home entertainment expert, Will Greenwald, helped us choose the best 55-inch and under TVs.

We’ve intentionally kept this list slim, knowing the number of options is far too lengthy and none of us have that kind of time these days. Keep in mind, there are a few times throughout the year that are best to get a discount on a new TV, so shop during those periods if you’re looking to grab the best discount.

Best overall 55-inch Hisense U8N 4K TV $999.99 at Amazon
$1,499.99 Save $500 Shop Now Why we like it

The 55-inch Hisense U8N with its bright display and QLED screen is a great choice for most people. The 2025 model is pricey, with a $1,499.99 MSRP — though we've seen it on sale for under $1,000. The 2024 model is a more budget-friendly choice with a list price of $998 and a regular sale price of under $700. "Budget-priced TVs available in smaller screen sizes like 50 or 43 inches are usually much dimmer than higher-end TVs, and their colors aren't as wide,” said Greenwald, but the Hisense doesn’t disappoint when it comes to brightness. In fact, CNET, another Mashable sister site, also found the Hisense U8N to be a prime option for a 55-inch TV, mentioning its impressive image quality, which uses mini-LED backlights.

After Greenwald’s testing of the 2024 Hisense U8N, he said, “Hisense once again hits it out of the park with a premium TV that rivals much more expensive competitors.”

Hisense also equipped this model with full-array local dimming, which means your screen will have better picture quality. Some TVs only use LED lighting around the edge, while full-array places LED throughout the back of the screen with locally dimmable areas to provide deeper blacks for a better experience with increased brightness, better contrast, and a crisp image.

We’re also fans of the Google TV integration, which neatly keeps your favorite streaming platforms easily accessible on the home screen with an intuitive design. Google Cast lets you push from an Android device or Chrome tab to the TV, and Apple AirPlay does the same with an iPhone or iPad.

Should you be looking for a 55-inch TV for gaming, the Hisense U8N has a 144Hz Game Mode Pro, keeping up with quick action.

The Hisense U8N also comes in 65, 75, 85, and 100 inches.

Best high-end TV Opens in a new window Credit: LG 55-inch LG Evo G5 OLED TV $2,499.99 at LG

If you’re looking for the best TV possible, the LG Evo G5 OLED TV is likely your best option for 55-inch models. After testing, Greenwald said, “The LG Evo G5 is the best OLED TV I've seen yet,” which says quite a bit since he’s tested over 170 TVs. That statement helps justify the $2,499.99 price tag, but LG packed this model with high-end features that also explain the price.

For starters, the Evo G5 looks modern and sleek thanks to its almost non-existent bezel and because it sits as close to flush to the wall as it gets. The “G” in Eco G5 stands for “gallery,” and LG intends the TV to look more like an art piece on the wall than a TV. You won't have to worry about finding a wall mount that can accomplish this because it’s included when you buy the TV.

Greenwald said the display is the best OLED he’s ever seen. LG mentions this model is the brightest and most vivid in the brand’s lineup, and PCMag’s testing showed impressive results from the Evo G5.

Instead of a matte finish, LG uses Perfect Black technology, which the brand says is ideal for watching in bright rooms, offering a glare-free experience. The brightness of the LG Evo G5 makes this a great model for cinephiles and those who take picture quality seriously. Greenwald was wowed by the contrast when watching The Great Gatsby and also loved its performance when testing with BBC’s Planet Earth II, mentioning, “It’s a lifelike picture that makes the nature footage look like you’re viewing it through a window and not a TV.”

If you're not thrilled with the price of the Evo G5, Greenwald says it’s wise to look at its predecessor, the LG Evo G4 OLED TV. While it’s not as bright, it’s often on sale, potentially saving you hundreds compared to the standard price of the G5.

What are the other sizes?

The LG Evo G5 OLED also comes in 65, 77, 83, and 97 inches.

Best model under 55 inches 48-inch LG Evo C4 OLED TV $996.99 at Amazon
Shop Now Why we like it

If you’re interested in something under 50 inches that doesn’t sacrifice on quality, the LG Evo C4 OLED TV comes in smaller sizes, including a 48- and 42-inch model. Since it comes with LG’s impressive screen brightness and contrast, these smaller TVs are well worth a spot in your home. However, they tend to be pricey, especially given the size, costing $1,499.99 for the 42-inch model and $1,599.99 for the 48-inch. However, it’s possible to find these models on sale for under $1,000, which brings them into the more affordable range for quality TVs.

The LG Evo C4 really shows off when it comes to screen performance in a bright room, not giving in to lower contrast that often happens with lower-end TVs. We also like the modern aesthetic on the LG Evo C4 with a slim design and barely noticeable bezel.

Another noteworthy feature of the Evo C4 is the four HDMI 2.1 inputs, desirable if you’ll be using this as a gaming TV.

What are the other sizes?

The LG Evo C4 OLED comes in 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, and 83 inches.

If you’re grabbing a TV for a guest bedroom or one for the kids to watch Moana, you might not want to spend much. If that’s the case, we’re proponents of the Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED. Right off the bat, it comes with an affordable price tag of under $500 for the 55-inch model (when it’s not on sale), or you can go even cheaper with the 43-inch option, which is just under $440 at full price. However, another budget-friendly benefit is that Amazon typically discounts its own product line during major sales periods like Black Friday and Prime Day, which means you’re likely in for a steep discount. We’ve seen the 43-inch model go as low as $340.

Aside from an attractive price, the Fire TV Omni 4K QLED comes with impressive contrast and nice color that Greenwald noted in his review. Another benefit of hanging out in the Amazon family is the compatibility with other Amazon devices like security cameras, the video doorbell, or smartplugs, all of those being accessible on the TV screen. You can also easily pair the TV with Echo speakers.

The Fire TV Omni can switch into ambient mode when you’re not watching, giving you the ability to customize the display to show your favorite photos, custom artwork, or bring up your calendar.

What are the other sizes?

The Amazon Fire TV Omni 4K QLED TV comes in 43, 50, 55, 65, and 75 inches.

Jon Stewart gives a brutal assessment of Trumps first 100 days on The Daily Show

Mashable - 10 hours 7 min ago

We're 100 days into Donald Trump's second presidency, and Jon Stewart thinks it's time for a review of how things are going so far.

In the Daily Show clip above he gives his blunt opinion on what Trump said while running versus what he's actually delivered, from his promises about the now-tanking economy to his promises about swiftly ending wars. Ultimately, Stewart concludes that his main issue is one of arrogance.

"His negotiating skills aren't the real danger to this country. What's gonna f*** us up is his obsession with the concept of the leverage he has," says Stewart. "You don't have the leverage. That's the key misunderstanding here. Trump is so arrogant. He thinks the leverage is his. It's ours. We, the people. It took the people 250 years of striving to live up to a constitutional republic and rule of law, painstaking equity that you are squandering. That is the crux of American exceptionalism. You just want to make us great. That's a downgrade. Our brand is not strategic uncertainty."
