Apple has a new iPhone out. Let's talk about it.
The newly launched iPhone 16e is a bit of a strategy shift for Apple. Rather than doing a budget-friendly iPhone SE model every two or three years, Apple has set itself up to potentially do a slightly compromised version of each year's flagship a handful of months later, if it wants to. It's not as cheap as the SE was, but in this case, you get what you pay for.
If you've been rocking an older iPhone or even an SE for the last few years, the 16e is well worth the upgrade. Here's why.
SEE ALSO: Apple iPhone 16e review: Battery life king Apple iPhone 16e: 5 reasons to upgradeFor reference, the iPhone 16e is basically the body of an iPhone 14 with some newer stuff inside of it. Here's how that all shakes out.
Bigger displayThe last iPhone SE model, which launched in 2022, had a 4.7-inch display. That was fine if you were used to older iPhones (I rocked an SE until very recently so I get it), but these days, it's possible to make a phone with a bigger screen that's also comfortable to hold. That's what the new iPhone 16e is.
Its 6.1-inch display is a big upgrade over the screen on the SE. It doesn't have 120Hz support or the Dynamic Island you would find on the more expensive flagship iPhones, but that's OK. The bezel is smaller than it was on the SE, too. It's just a nice enhancement over what the SE offered.
Better cameraWhat you shouldn't expect from an iPhone 16e is a camera array that's anything close to what the iPhone 16 Pro offers. However, compared to the SE, it's a huge upgrade.
You still only get one lens, but it's a 48MP model this time around, compared to 12MP on the SE. More importantly, some of the more advanced software features that Apple included on recent iPhones (but not the SE) are here, such as nighttime photography. This is a godsend, as when I owned an SE, the inability to take decent low-light photos annoyed the heck out of me.
Longer battery lifeOne big bonus with the iPhone 16e compared to older budget models is the inclusion of Apple's A18 chip, the same one found inside the iPhone 16. That means performance won't be a problem on this phone. More importantly, it also contributes to substantially longer battery life than what the SE had to offer, and surprisingly, even longer battery life than the iPhone 16.
Apple rates the 16e for 26 hours of video playback, compared to 22 on the 16. Our reviewer Stan Schroeder noted that he was able to get about two days of heavy use out of the 16e on a full charge, which is incredible. My old SE couldn't make it through a day on a charge.
Face ID beats thumb print sensorsPersonally, I never had much luck with the biometric thumb print sensors on older iPhones, including the SE. For whatever reason, they just didn't work consistently for me. Now, I have an iPhone with Face ID, and even though that has problems of its own, I find it faster and more convenient regardless.
Needless to say after that preamble, the iPhone 16e ditches the home button in favor of Face ID. That's a good thing, in my opinion. Just remember you need to be looking at the camera with your eyes for it to work most of the time.
USB-C means saying goodbye to the Lightning cableLast but definitely not least, anyone who buys an iPhone 16e can hurl their Lightning cables into a river. Like every new iPhone, the 16e uses USB-C for charging. That not only enables you to use pretty much any cable you have lying around, but it means charging speeds should be faster, too. This has been my favorite thing about owning an iPhone 16, and now 16e owners can get in on the fun, too.

Based on the title of A24's Death of a Unicorn, you know a gorgeous unicorn is going to bite the dust. The film's first trailer revealed not just how said unicorn would die (a tragic hit-and-run) but also who was responsible: father-daughter pair Elliot (Paul Rudd) and Ridley (Jenna Ortega).
SEE ALSO: 'Death of a Unicorn' trailer: Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd run over a unicorn. Chaos ensues. But in the film's second trailer, it becomes clear that there are multiple unicorns in the picture — and they're on the hunt for revenge.
The trailer opens on Elliot and Ridley driving through a massive nature reserve donated by the billionaire Leopold family, played by Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, and Will Poulter. Apparently, it's been untouched by man, meaning it's the perfect place for magical creatures to flourish, unnoticed. At least, until someone hits them with a car. After that, it's all downhill.
That's because the discovery of Elliot and Ridley's dead unicorn has the Leopolds seeing dollar signs. If they can harness the unicorn's curative properties — especially its capacity for immortality — then they could make a killing.
"We have a moral imperative to harvest every last one," Poulter's character proclaims.
Not so fast, Leopolds! There are more unicorns out there, including a very scary dark unicorn. And they are bloodthirsty. Check out the beginnings of the unicorn gorefest in the trailer above.
Death of a Unicorn premieres March 8 at SXSW. It hits theaters March 28.

Toxic Town, a new four-part Netflix drama out today, is a based on a sadly true story. Written by Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes, His Dark Materials), the limited series traces the child poisonings of Corby, Northamptonshire, and the long legal battle led by the families, primarily mothers, of children born with deformities caused by toxic dust from the former British Steel factory, closed in 1979.
In a heartbreaking video by Netflix, Toxic Town stars Jodie Whittaker and Aimee Lou Wood spoke to mothers Susan McIntyre, Tracey Taylor, and Maggie Mahon about their experiences, growing up in Corby, and the seemingly endless fight for their day in court — as well as how their story was represented in the Netflix series.
"All the years of fighting then finding out that, yes, that the judge believed us mums and we were right, was such a big sense of relief because we didn't do anything and it wasn't our fault," says Taylor. In 2010, Corby Borough Council was found negligent for waste management at the steelworks.
In the show, Whittaker plays McIntyre, Wood plays Taylor, and Bridgerton's Claudia Jessie plays Mahon. There's a deeply moving moment between Taylor and Wood, which honours Taylor's daughter Shelby Anne, who died at just four days old. "What you have done for her I am in debt to you, because you have done her justice, and you have done us justice and we will be forever grateful," says Taylor.
SEE ALSO: Netflix's 'Toxic Town' trailer traces one of the UK's biggest poisoning scandalsWhittaker described being part of Toxic Town as "a huge honour," and championed the women who lived through the series' very real events.
"For me and Aimee Lou, we had lots of scenes together that were within the hospitals, so we could appreciate without ever knowing what you've been through, what it must’ve have been like to go day in day out in those environments. And then for someone to question the validity of your claims is unimaginable, and completely unacceptable," she said.
"This will bring attention to something incredibly shocking, incredibly heartbreaking and totally avoidable."
