How to see snow totals for Florida, Texas and other states online

Mashable - 1 hour 45 min ago

Southern states like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee are grappling with a historic winter storm that has brought record-breaking snowfall to millions and transformed typically mild regions into icy landscapes.

SEE ALSO: What are comets? The secret lives of space snowballs, explained.

If you're interested or eager to see just how bad it is around your area, you can head on over to the National Weather Service (NWS). Their snowfall map makes it’s easier than ever to check snow totals for any state online.

The NWS provides real-time updates through its interactive website and mobile platforms. Head to weather.gov and navigate to the “Winter Weather” section under "Weather Safety," where you’ll find snowfall analysis tools. The site features detailed maps, sortable state-by-state data, and even localized snowfall reports down to specific counties.

For a more dynamic experience, explore the NWS Snowfall Analysis page. It offers zoomable maps with overlays showing accumulation levels, letting you see how your area compares to others.

Netflixs La Dolce Villa trailer is pure, fluffy Italian fantasy

Mashable - 2 hours 5 min ago

Every time a headline goes around that a small Italian town wants foreigners to buy up property for a measly sum, everyone hits the pub with their friends and dreams the DIY dream.

And some people — namely Mean Girls director Mark Waters and A Perfect Pairing writers Elizabeth Hackett and Hilary Galanoy — make an entire Netflix movie out of it. With a Parmigiano Reggiano-topped trailer out today, La Dolce Villa feels like a Netflix Christmas movie without the Christmas part, all shot in Rome, eastern Lazio, and Tuscany.

Scandal and Felicity star Scott Foley plays Eric, a man whose daughter Olivia (Maia Reficco, Do Revenge) buys a crumbling Italian villa for €1 (yep, she did the thing). He's mad, until he meets the stunning mayor who sold it to her (Violante Placido). Plus, as his daughter reminds him, he used to be a chef and what he's in Italy? Sounds like Eric will be eat, pray, loving his way to finding himself in no time.

La Dolce Villa is streaming on Netflix Feb. 13.

January is a big month for tech news. First, we got an overload of announcements from CES, including plenty of new robot vacuums and the first-ever third-party SteamOS handheld. But now, we're all eyes on Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025. And that can only mean one thing — the 2024 Samsung lineup is seeing some sweet discounts.

As of Jan. 22, the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (256GB) is on sale at Best Buy for $999.99, marked down from the standard price of $1,299.99. That's a 23% discount that'll save you $300.

Mashable's Tech Editor Kimberly Gedeon considers the Galaxy S24 Ultra to be the best Android phone around. Sure, that could change once we get the full specs on the S25 Ultra, but for now it stands. In Gedeon's review of the S24 Ultra, she highlights the awesome chat translation and the impressive battery life.

Gedeon also loves the included S Pen. "It can, indeed, 'read' my chicken scratch, allowing me to search through documents inside the Notes app — even if it was written with the S Pen," writes Gedeon.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra also comes with bragging rights of the Circle to Search function. This allows you to circle anything on your screen and instantly search it with Google.

We're likely to see some upgrades with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, but undoubtedly it'll come with a steeper price compared to the S24. Thanks to today's sale price, the (current) best Android phone can be yours for just $999.99.

Zero Day trailer sees Robert De Niro and Angela Bassett vs. cyberattack

Mashable - 3 hours 26 min ago

Robert De Niro is a former U.S. president tracking down the villains behind a massive cyberattack in Zero Day, Netflix's upcoming limited series that feels a little too real.

The screen legend plays former POTUS George Mullen, now head of the so-called Zero Day Commission, a task force racing to find those responsible for the attack. He's dragging civilians off the street without a warrant under the current president's (Angela Bassett) orders. He's being attacked by dodgy misinformation-spreading YouTubers (Dan Stevens). He's trying to keep secrets from his past good and buried. It's a lot for Mullen, and he could crack at any moment.

Written and executive produced by Narcos' Eric Newman and former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, Zero Day promises a political thriller with an outrageously awarded cast: De Niro, Bassett, and Stevens are joined by Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, Lizzy Caplan, Bill Camp, Matthew Modine, Joan Allen, Gaby Hoffmann, and Clark Gregg.

Zero Day is streaming on Netflix on Feb. 20.

DeepSeek AI might be smarter than OpenAIs smartest AI, and you can try it out now

Mashable - 4 hours 19 min ago

There's a new AI player in town, and you might want to pay attention to this one.

On Monday, Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek launched a new, open-source large language model called DeepSeek R1.

According to DeepSeek, R1 wins over other popular LLMs (large language models) such as OpenAI in several important benchmarks, and it's especially good with mathematical, coding, and reasoning tasks.

Tweet may have been deleted

DeepSeek R1 is actually a refinement of DeepSeek R1 Zero, which is an LLM that was trained without a conventionally used method called supervised fine-tuning. This made it very capable in certain tasks, but as DeepSeek itself puts it, Zero had "poor readability and language mixing." Enter R1, which fixes these issues by incorporating "multi-stage training and cold-start data" before it was trained with reinforcement learning.

Arcane technical language aside (the details are online if you're interested), there are several key things you should know about DeepSeek R1. First, it's open source, meaning it's up for scrutiny from experts, which should alleviate concerns about privacy and security. Second, it's free to use as a web app, while API access is very cheap ($0.14 for one million input tokens, compared to OpenAI's $7.5 for its most powerful reasoning model, o1).

SEE ALSO: OpenAI could release agentic AI tool Operator soon

Most importantly, this thing is very, very capable. To test it out, I immediately threw it into deep waters, asking it to code a fairly complex web app which needed to parse publicly available data, and create a dynamic website with travel and weather information for tourists. Amazingly, DeepSeek produced completely acceptable HTML code right away, and was able to further refine the site based on my input while improving and optimizing the code on its own along the way.

I'll do all of that...tomorrow. Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable / DeepSeek

I also asked it to improve my chess skills in five minutes, to which it replied with a number of neatly organized and very useful tips (my chess skills did not improve, but only because I was too lazy to actually go through with DeepSeek's suggestions).

I then asked DeepSeek to prove how smart it is in exactly three sentences. Bad move by me, as I, the human, am not nearly smart enough to verify or even fully understand any of the three sentences. Notice, in the screenshot below, that you can see DeepSeek's "thought process" as it figures out the answer, which is perhaps even more fascinating than the answer itself.

We get it, you're smart. Credit: Stan Schroeder / Mashable / DeepSeek

It's impressive to use. But as ZDnet noted, in the background of all this are training costs which are orders of magnitude lower than for some competing models, as well as chips which aren't as powerful as the chips that are on disposal for U.S. AI companies. DeepSeek thus shows that extremely clever AI with reasoning ability doesn't have to be extremely expensive to train — or to use.

The Daily Show spends 11 minutes gleefully mocking Trumps inauguration day

Mashable - 6 hours 23 min ago

Jon Stewart has already made his feelings clear on Donald Trump's inauguration, but in the Daily Show video above host Ronny Chieng gives a running commentary on some of the day's more ridiculous moments.

Chieng starts with the inauguration party, going through everything from Trump's "grand entrance in front of a Windows 95 screensaver" to the cake with an airplane on it ("the coolest thing any six-year-old boy can have").

Chieng then moves on to the executive order signing, from Trump throwing pens into the crowd ("Whoever caught that pen is so lucky. That is gonna be such a cool thing for those guys to show their kids once they get their visitation rights back,") to Trump saying a gleeful "ooh" when handed the order to withdraw from the WHO ("He's withdrawing from the World Health Organisation like he's hearing the dessert options," says Chieng. "I'll have the tiramisu and the potential measles outbreak.")

For a reminder of some of the things Trump promised in his inauguration day speech, Mashable's recapped the whole thing.

Shudders The Dead Thing trailer teases a date that turns into a nightmare

Mashable - 7 hours 27 min ago

Modern dating horror gets a Groundhog Day-style twist in the trailer for The Death Thing, Shudder's upcoming movie from writer/director Elric Kane.

In the clip above we see Alex (Blu Hunt) doomswiping on a dating app before she meets a man (Ben Smith-Petersen) she has an instant connection with. The problem? The next time she meets him, he appears to have no recollection of their first date.

Katherine Hughes and John Karna also star in what looks like a creepy and psychological take on modern dating app culture.

The Dead Thing is streaming on Shudder from Feb. 14.

NASA built new tires for Mars. Theyre nothing like your tires.

Mashable - 7 hours 50 min ago

The next Mars rovers may traverse the Red Planet with futuristic tires.

NASA's Glenn Research Center released imagery and footage from testing of a novel tire, called a shape memory alloy spring tire, that would be capable of incurring significant deformation on rugged terrain, before springing back to its original shape.

"We can actually deform this all the way down to the axle, and have it return to shape, which we could never even contemplate in a conventional metal system," Santo Padula, a materials research engineer at NASA Glenn, explained in a new agency video.

The space agency recently tested the tires on Martian-simulated terrain at Airbus Defence and Space in the United Kingdom. The engineers reported the tires passed testing on the rocky and slippery artificial topography — an encouraging endorsement of the technology.

SEE ALSO: Aliens haven't contacted us. Scientists found a compelling reason why.

The springy metal is composed of nickel-titanium, a material that can withstand intense stresses. (Previous NASA spring tire designs used steel, which more easily leads to irreversible deformation.) The current rovers on Mars, Perseverance and Curiosity, are built with tires made of aluminum and have grown battered and punctured as they crunch over the wild Martian desert.

Future extraterrestrial rovers — especially if they're crewed vehicles on Mars or the moon — would certainly benefit from damage-resistant tires. It won't be easy to fix a flat or punctured tire on another world.

Such a self-repairing material might be vital for structures, too. The moon, for example, has almost no protective atmosphere, meaning its surface is often pelted with speeding micrometeorites. "We need new materials for extreme environments that can provide energy absorption for micrometeorite strikes that happen on the moon to enable things like habitat structures for large numbers of astronauts and scientists to do work on the moon and Mars," Padula said.

Who knows — perhaps future Mars rovers, moon bases, and even moon railroad cars will contain springy metal, designed for the extremes of other worlds.
