Google Maps update will let some users customize their cars virtual icon

Mashable - Wed, 02/05/2025 - 11:57

Some Google Maps users can now access more ways to customize their car's icon while using the app.

As it stands, Google Maps only lets you choose one of four icons: an arrow, a red car, a yellow SUV, or a green truck. But, as 9to5Google spotted, some Android users are now prompted about "early access to customize your vehicle icon's style [and] color." When inputting driving directions, they get a notice about setting up "your ride, your way."

There are a lot more options rolling out. There are five new cars: an off-road pickup, a sports car, a sedan, a hatchback, and an SUV. The are eight new colors, too: white, black, gray, red, blue, yellow, green, and purple.

We at Mashable covered planned icon additions to Google Maps for iOS in November, but now the changes appear to be rolling out for Android. The new icons are available for Android users running Google Maps beta version 25.06.x.

Microsoft Build 2025 dates are officially confirmed

Mashable - Wed, 02/05/2025 - 10:59

Microsoft's next big event is officially on the calendar.

The 2025 edition of Microsoft Build was confirmed by the company this week, or more specifically, the dates when it will happen were confirmed. According to Microsoft's website, the developer-focused conference kicks off on May 19 and ends on May 22. It will take place in Seattle.

SEE ALSO: OpenAI, Microsoft, Trump admin claim DeepSeek trained AI off stolen data Tweet may have been deleted

While Microsoft could and might announce new hardware at its Build keynote, you should really expect a heavy emphasis on artificial intelligence.

At Build 2024, AI integrations for apps like Teams were the primary focus, with hardware decidedly taking a backseat. There's no guarantee Build 2025 will be exactly the same, but given everything we've seen from other tech companies recently, don't be shocked if this is a very AI-centric event.

Our favorite iPad for most people, the M2 iPad Air can serve as a daily driver for streaming and scrolling or double as a laptop, thanks to the M2 chip's insane processing power. In our Geekbench 6 tests, it actually scored on par with the M2 MacBook Air. Aesthetically, not much changed from the previous generation, but internally it's a powerhouse that "delivers impressive performance and noteworthy battery life that will keep creatives, students, and on-the-go busy bees away from the imprisonment of charging cables and wall outlets," according to Mashable's former Tech Editor Kim Gedeon. As of Feb. 5, you can score the base model with 128GB of storage and WiFi connectivity for a new record low price of $689 (down from $799). That price only applies to the space gray model, though; if you prefer a different color, it'll cost you $699.99.

While your phone is likely by your side all day, there are some tasks it's not especially great at — like watching your favorite show, for example. It's hard to pick up on the fine details on the Great British Bake Off from a small phone screen. Your shows and movies deserve to be streamed on something bigger, brighter, and better than your phone. And how about something that can also double as a mobile work station? If this sounds up your alley, check out today's deal at Amazon.

As of Feb. 5, the 13-inch M2 Apple iPad Air (128GB, Space Gray) is on sale for $689 at Amazon, down from the usual price of $799. That's a 14% discount that takes $110 off the list price. It's also the lowest price we've ever spotted at Amazon. Beware this tablet might come with delayed shipped, with dates going into the beginning of March for some areas.

SEE ALSO: The Apple Studio Display is down to its lowest-ever price at Amazon

When it comes to shopping for the best iPads, Mashable ranks the M2 iPad Air as the best option for most people. "It will be your new go-to device for streaming, reading, or creative projects. And if you plan on using your tablet as a substitute for a laptop, it'll work for that, too," explains Mashable Shopping Reporter Samantha Mangino.

While the M2 version the iPad Air is no longer the thinnest (that award now goes to the M4 iPad Pro), it still packs in the features for the price. In Mashable's testing, the M2 iPad Air got over 13 hours of battery life.

The 13-display uses Liquid Retina for an impressive screen experience, meaning it'll be great for streaming your shows while cozy on the couch.

But since it's compatible with both the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, you'll be able to use the iPad Air as a mobile work station instead of carting your laptop around. That means your carry-on bag with likely weigh much less and have much more space for important stuff like an extra sweater.

Since it's down to its lowest price ever of $689, consider snagging the M2 Apple iPad Air as gift to yourself for making it through January. Since there's no telling when the price will head back to the normal $799, it's best to jump on this one as soon as possible.

Netflixs Toxic Town trailer traces one of the UKs biggest poisoning scandals

Mashable - Wed, 02/05/2025 - 10:00

The child poisonings of Corby, Northamptonshire, described by the Guardian as "the worst child-poisoning case since thalidomide," lie at the heart of Toxic Town, a new four-part Netflix drama with a first look trailer out today.

Starring Doctor Who's Jodie Whittaker, Sex Education's Aimee Lou Wood, The Diplomat's Rory Kinnear, Bridgerton's Claudia Jessie, and Trainspotting screen legend Robert Carlyle, Toxic Town traces the discovery and long legal battle led by the families, primarily mothers, of children born with deformities caused by toxic dust from Corby's former steelworks. In 2010, Corby Borough Council was found negligent for its botched removal of waste from the British Steel factory, closed in 1979.

Written by Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes, His Dark Materials, Stranger Things: The First Shadow), the limited series is a co-production between Netflix and Broke & Bones — owned by Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones.

Toxic Town is streaming on Netflix from Feb. 27.

Jurassic World Rebirth trailer seeks the dinosaurs too dangerous for the original park

Mashable - Wed, 02/05/2025 - 08:44

It's been three years since we've had a Jurassic movie, when the Jurassic World trilogy concluded with the reunion of the original cast and the long-awaited (I said LONG-AWAITED) arrival of Dimetrodon in the franchise.

Setf five years after Jurassic World Dominion, Jurassic World Rebirth sees an extraction team (Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend) sent to the original research facility for Jurassic Park to get that all-important dino DNA.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One) and written by Jurassic Park's original screenwriter David Koepp, Jurassic World Rebirth looks to the dinosaurs who "were too dangerous for the original park." Hell yeah.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits cinemas July 2.
