The parade is over. The plates have been cleared. The family is gone, and you're full. Not just on turkey, mashed potatoes, and whatever cranberry atrocity is traditional for your clan, but also just full up on the holiday cheer. Sure, there's plenty of funny Thanksgiving TV specials to indulge in, family-friendly Belcher antics to binge-watch, and even Christmas movies to marathon. But maybe you're hungering for something dark and grim. For this acquired taste, I recommend biting into Denis Villeneuve's twisted crime-thriller, Prisoners.
Why? Well, for starters it's seasonally set.
Prisoners is a Thanksgiving movie from the start.Prisoners begins on a Thanksgiving that no one in this quiet Pennsylvanian town will soon forget. This is a place of cozy Americana, where neighbors gather together for the holiday feast and bring to the table good manners, warmth, and the freshly slaughtered venison from the deer snagged while hunting. Proud patriarch Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is deeply devoted to his family, doting on his young daughter and intently instructing his teen son that a man's role is as protector, no matter what.
So, when his little girl and her best friend Joy go missing — ironically while in search of the "safety whistle" dear old dad gave her — it shatters something inside Keller. As his wife (Maria Bello) crumbles into despair, he cannot leave this missing-persons case up to the police. So while headstrong hotshot Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) chases down leads both winding and grotesque, Keller tails his own prime suspect (Paul Dano). But this leads him down a slippery slope of vigilantism, vengeance, and possible damnation.
Hugh Jackman roughs up Paul Dano in "Prisoners." Credit: Moviestore / ShutterstockLong before delving into the world of Dune, Villeneuve absolutely stuffed this film with heralded performers, including David Dastmalchian, Terrence Howard, and Academy Award–winners Viola Davis and Melissa Leo. Each actor sinks their teeth into a drama that oozes with grief, regret, and almost radioactive rage.
Prisoners is a tale of rage and vengeance. This intense ensemble engages in a game of cats-and-mice that involves stalking, drugging, battery, torture, and more. Yet Prisoners is not about grisly spectacle. Aaron Guzikowski's riveting screenplay asks the question: In the face of your worst nightmare, how might you behave?
While each performance is strong (even more so on a rewatch), the grudge match here is not between Keller and the man he believes took his child. It's between Keller and Loki, two tough-as-nails men who want the same thing but take radically different routes to getting it.
In the face of your worst nightmare, how might you behave? The growling wrath Jackman channeled into Wolverine feels more dangerous in this context, probably in part because an R-rating means that the film is not restrained by the MPAA's standards when it comes to intense on-screen violence. But Prisoners is not so much visually gory as it is psychologically disturbing. Over the week its story spans, we are helpless witnesses to a good-hearted family man who transforms into an impulsive monster in the face of what he can't control. Though Villeneuve doggedly grounds the film in realistic settings and with a tooth-gritting tone, Prisoners is in part a fable about how wild the world can be, even in our own front yards.
Gyllenhaal is the perfect foil to Jackman, delivering a performance that's still fed by anger, but a colder, more calculating kind. Sure, Loki is the kind of cop who might bend a rule or rough up a suspect in a fit of outrage. But between the two, he seems positively monkish in his calm. Littered in tattoos underneath a shirt that's fiercely buttoned up, Loki is a stark contrast to the flannel and beard of Keller's masculinity. One is better at keeping his feelings hidden and his demons at bay, but it doesn't mean he doesn't understand the struggle. This commonality throbs at the core of Prisoners, whispering a warning about how fragile faith and civility can be in the face of true horror.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman face off in "Prisoners." Credit: Moviestore / ShutterstockPerhaps you've enjoyed Denis Villeneuve's ambitious two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune, and so you're looking for another challenging epic to sink into. Then, Prisoners should be that pick. It's a film that allows you a safe space to work out fear and anxiety about a world gone mad. But be warned: It won't provide comfort, only validation.
Beyond the grisly hook of little girls snatched, beyond the powerful performances of a staggeringly stacked cast, there's also the masterful unfolding of a mystery that's too tricky to be predicted. Like the labyrinth imagery that emerges throughout, this story winds and weaves, sometimes drawing tremulously close to the central reveal, then seeming to swerve down another dead end. The ultimate solution is comprehensive and, in the end, alarmingly simple. It was a rush to experience this reveal the first time in theaters back in 2013, and it's a rush now. Because even if you remember bits of this movie — or even vividly recall its breath-snatching finale — you'll get caught up in the journey all over again. And that flip your stomach will make hits hard as ever.
So, curl up in a warm blanket, kick back, and let the chills wash over you.

Black Friday is just around the corner, but major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart are already kicking off their programming. In other words: it's a pretty good time to pick up a pair of headphones on sale.
So far, we've seen the bulk of the deals at Amazon, with headphones and earbuds from Sony and Bose returning to record low prices. In addition to our top picks as of Nov. 20, the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones and Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds, we're also seeing markdowns on brands like Apple, Beats, Jabra, and Google.
With a few pairs already down at lows we saw during Prime Day, we're anticipating that the actual day of Black Friday (this year, it falls on Nov. 29) will bring new record lows. In the meantime, we'll keep you updated on the best noise-cancelling headphones deals live, from now through Black Friday.
Best noise-cancelling headphones deal Opens in a new window Credit: Sony Sony WH-1000XM5 $298.00 at AmazonCheck out our full review of the Sony WH-1000XM5.
If you want headphones that have great noise cancelling and incredible (adjustable) sound, then the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones won't let you down. Out of the noise-cancelling headphones we've tested, these are our top pick for audiophiles. It can be a little annoying that the ear cups don't fold in, but with 30 hours of battery life, you'll probably find yourself wearing them more often than not. They've hit $298 a couple times this month, but it's just a dollar away from their low price of $297. With these headphones being a 2022 release, we're hoping to see them drop even lower on Black Friday, but if you want to pick up a pair early, this deal matches both their July and October Prime Day price.

For folks who want the best possible noise cancelling they can get in their earbuds, we like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds. They do come with the price tag that reflects their top notch noise cancelling — but, on sale, they cost less than the full price of AirPods Pro. After testing out these earbuds, Mashable Shopping Reporter Samantha Mangino was more impressed than she expected to be, writing, "Truthfully, I can't imagine a person that wouldn't appreciate these buds. The noise cancellation is the best I've ever experienced, and the music feels like it surrounds you thanks to spatial audio. Plus, the fit is like no other."

The Black Friday shopping season is here, and Bluetooth speakers are at some of their best prices of the year.
Though it may not be the best time of year to take a Bluetooth speaker poolside, it's always great to think ahead and save some money. Plus, having a quality speaker is never a bad idea if you're planning on hosting any holiday parties.
SEE ALSO: All the best early Black Friday deals at Amazon, Target, Best Buy, and WalmartSo far, we're seeing the most deals at Amazon, bringing deals on speakers from Ultimate Ears, JBL, Beats, and Sony. Thanks to the proximity to Black Friday, we're also seeing brands that don't typically go on sale, like Sonos, finally get some price cuts.
It's a pretty solid roundup (all of our favorite speakers are represented), but as Black Friday proper — Nov. 29 — draws nearer, we'll be updating this list with any new deals that crop up.
Best Bluetooth speaker deal ahead of Black Friday Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 $78.96 at AmazonThe Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 4 is the best speaker we've tested under $100: it doesn't take up much space, has 14 hours of battery life, gets as loud as a larger speaker without losing much clarity, and can be taken on the go to pretty much any situation thanks to its IP67 rating. While it drops to $79.99 throughout the year, this is still a fantastic deal for a speaker that we think is well worth it at full price, and at the time of writing, each of the four colorways is available on sale. (At $78.96, you can get it for ever-so-slightly cheaper, but this price is only available on the black colorway).
If you're in the market for a new Bluetooth speaker, one of the only reasons we'd say to pass on this one is if you already own the Wonderboom 3 (it's incredibly similar) and want to pair up with another Wonderboom speaker to use stereo mode (none of the UE speakers are backwards compatible for stereo mode).
Best high-end Bluetooth speaker deal Sonos Move 2 $359.00 at AmazonCheck out our full review of the Sonos Move 2.
Sonos speakers are expensive, and they really only go on sale during Black Friday. Even during both Prime Days this year, we didn't see price cuts on Sonos products, and especially not our favorite pick for smart homes, the Sonos Move 2. This speaker is big enough that it might be a hassle to move it around regularly, but it's not so big that you'll dread moving it if you're hosting a backyard barbecue.
The trade-off is that you get a speaker with 24-hour battery life and sound quality that shines across all genres of music. Mashable Senior Editor Stan Schroeder wrote in his review, "It's capable of producing one of those effects where you play a song you know well (in my case, 'Roxanne' by The Police), and you hear details you never knew were there, like the (accidental?) touching of the drumsticks at the end of the song's intro." Plus, it has compatibility with Alexa and Sonos Voice Control.
Best budget Bluetooth speaker deal JBL Go 4 $39.95 at AmazonThe JBL Go 4 is tiny and inexpensive, but it packs a punch. This speaker sounds surprisingly clear, and can get louder than you think (though you do start to sacrifice some of that clarity at higher volumes). During our testing, we found it got anywhere from seven to up to nine-and-a-half hours of playtime, making it an excellent option for taking on the go to the beach (where it's IP67 water and dust-proof rating will keep it safe), or for taking up minimal space in your home while still providing plenty of sound. $39.95 is the lowest price we've ever seen it at, beating its Prime Day price by about $5.

So if you're looking to make your home a little smarter, now is the time to shop Amazon's Echo devices.
Echos are some of the easiest (and most affordable) ways to upgrade your smart home, helping you do everything from play music to set daily lighting routines. Way ahead of Black Friday, we're already seeing those deals swing back around.
Here are the best deals on Amazon Echo Devices to shop ahead of Black Friday.

UPDATE: Nov. 28, 2024, 2:30 p.m. EST This story has been updated with current pricing on robot vacuums on sale during all of the big retailers' Black Friday sales, including a new top pick for the best robot vacuum deal without self-emptying: a mopping, smart mapping Shark model under $150.
The best Black Friday robot vacuum deals at a glance Best non self-emptying deal Shark IQ Matrix 2-in-1 RV2402 $148 at Walmart (save $231.99) Get Deal Best budget self-emptying deal iRobot Roomba Combo i5+ $299 at Amazon (save $250.99) Get Deal Best premium deal Roborock Qrevo S $459.99 at Amazon (save $340) Get DealYet another Black Friday is (somehow) here, with its arrival often bringing flashbacks to last year's frantic shopping — including the items that you didn't end up buying, and then wished you had all year. If a robot vacuum didn't make the cut last year, let Black Friday 2024 be the time to finally ditch your current clunky vacuum and treat yourself to a significantly shorter chore list.
Black Friday deals are making high-end vacs super accessibleThe robot vacs getting attention deals-wise this Black Friday are packed with high-end features — ones you may have previously been fine to settle without just because, at full price, they're a really intimidating investment. I'm personally eyeing the number of options that bring home smart mapping and small obstacle avoidance (no more eaten phone chargers) and self-washing and drying mopping pads in the $500 to $700 range.
Considering the latter two features in that trio I just rattled off were once so newfangled that they were only available in the $1,000+ range, these sale prices are ones to hop on without hesitation. And FWIW, several robot vacuums are already beating their previous record-low pricing that we saw during October Prime Day — and unlike Prime Day, no membership is needed to access these deals.
SEE ALSO: I've tested over 20 robot vacuums and these are the best for every budget in 2024Below, I'm tracking the robot vacuum deals live throughout Black Friday weekend and into Cyber Monday. Though most of the robot vacuum deals in this list are for sure at their Black Friday prices (as Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target are in official Black Friday mode as of Thanksgiving), it's not impossible for a few new robot vacs to go on sale as Cyber Week approaches — so if you can be patient, checking back later wouldn't be a bad idea.
Deals are organized into two sections: robot vacuums that don't mop and robot vacuum and mop combos, with self-emptying docks noted when applicable. Within each category, all robot vacuum deals are ordered by price from cheapest to most premium. (Need help deciding which robot vacuum to buy? I have some guidelines.)
Note: Any deal marked with a 🔥 has dropped to a record-low price at Amazon.
Best robot vacuum deal ahead of Black Friday Opens in a new window Credit: iRobot iRobot Roomba Combo i5+ $299.00 at AmazonThis nearly 50% off discount on the Roomba Combo j5+ is stellar at first glance, but it looks like an even sweeter deal when compared to the current deal on the cheapest self-emptying Roomba, the Roomba Vac 2. For $249.99, that bare-bones Roomba doesn't mop and can't smart map your house. For $299 — just $50 more — the Roomba Combo i5+ can mop and can smart map to clean specific rooms in your home on command. If $300 is your budget cap for a new robot vacuum, spending that extra $50 is a no-brainer.
The only downside to choosing the Combo i5+ over the more advanced Combo j5+ that was on sale last week is that the i series Roombas don't have small obstacle avoidance technology, so they can't dodge things on the floor like charging cords or pet waste. However, if your home is already pretty tidy as it is, or you're down to deal with tidying up ahead of vacuuming, the Combo i5+ is a total steal at this price.

UPDATE: Nov. 28, 2024, 5:46 p.m. EST This story has been updated with the current best Black Friday Roomba deals at Amazon as well as iRobot's website, including several budget-friendly mopping and smart mapping options.
A quick look at the best Black Friday Roomba deals Best standalone Roomba deal iRobot Roomba Combo j5 $299.99 (save $230) Get Deal Best self-emptying Roomba deal iRobot Roomba Combo i5+ $299 (save $250.99) Get DealSo many robot vacuums go on sale for Black Friday that decision fatigue is imminent — unless you're specifically set on a Roomba, that is.
Roombas do tend to run slightly more expensive than competitors with the same features, so November is a wise time to buy one — Black Friday has been known to trigger new record-breaking discounts on several Roomba models. In terms of where that happens, Amazon is the best place to find a Roomba on sale despite the flop of the acquisition of iRobot by Amazon (though iRobot's own website has good options, too). Because iRobot doesn't debut new models for the year at CES in January like many other big robot vacuum brands do, you can also be confident that the Roombas on sale during Black Friday won't be phased out in a month or two.
SEE ALSO: 4 best robot vacuums and mops to buy on Black Friday, testedSo yeah, there are quite a few Roombas on sale for Black Friday — mainly at Amazon's Black Friday sale, with a few other deals scattered at iRobot's website (and a few matched deals at Target and Best Buy). But while most of those deals look good in terms of the percentage off that you're getting, many of them just aren't worthwhile when you consider the features you're securing, especially when taking into the bigger list of robot vacuum deals from other brands this Black Friday.
For instance, the base-tier Roomba Vac Essential being on sale for $149 sounds great until you realize that this Roomba doesn't have smart mapping, which means it can't clean specific rooms on command. When robot vacuums that do have smart mapping like the Shark IQ Ultra or Eufy L50 are on sale for $148 and $159, respectively this Black Friday, that particular Roomba Vac deal is far less exciting.
SEE ALSO: I've tested over 20 robot vacuums — here are the top 5 to shop on Black FridayThis doesn't mean there aren't any Roomba deals that I think are worth it this Black Friday. The i series and j series Roombas under $500 that are currently live are stellar — multiple models are nearly 50% off, with both self-emptying and mopping being optional depending on your needs. (As you get into the more expensive j series Roombas, the deals start to become less appealing. Premium robot vacuums from other brands simply do more than something like the Roomba Combo j9+ for less money.) For a deeper dive into these features, check out my guide that unpacks the differences between the main Roombas.
This story will be updated any time a new noteworthy Roomba deal drops between now and the end of Cyber Week. While you can be pretty certain that the Roombas on sale now are at their Black Friday pricing, Amazon or iRobot could very well drop completely new Roomba deals over the next few days — I'll keep you posted. Note: Any deal marked with a 🔥 has dropped to a record-low price at Amazon.
Best early Black Friday Roomba deal Opens in a new window Credit: iRobot iRobot Roomba Combo i5 $299.00 at AmazonThis nearly 50% discount on the Roomba Combo j5+ already looks great on its face, but it's an even sweeter deal when compared to the current sale price on the cheapest self-emptying Roomba, the Roomba Vac 2. For $249.99, the ultrabasic Roomba Vac 2 doesn't mop and can't smart map your house. For $299 — just $50 more — the Roomba Combo i5+ can mop and can smart map to clean specific rooms in your home on command. If $300 is your budget cap for a new robot vacuum, spending that extra $50 is a no-brainer.
The only downside to choosing the Combo i5+ over the more advanced Combo j5+, which is also at an amazing sale price of $399 for Black Friday, is that the i series Roombas don't have the small obstacle avoidance technology that helps dodge things on the floor like charging cords or pet waste. UPDATE: Nov. 28, 2024, 6:15 p.m. EST This story has been updated to reflect the latest Black Friday sale pricing on self-emptying robot vacs as of Thanksgiving night, including a new Shark robot vacuum deal under $250.
A quick look at the best self-emptying robot vacuum deals ahead of Black Friday Best under $300 Shark IQ RV2303AE 248 (save $251.99) Get Deal Best Roomba deal iRobot Roomba Combo j5+ 399 (save $330.99) Get Deal Best hybrid deal with self-cleaning mopping pads Roborock Qrevo S 459.99 (save $340) Get DealThe majority of robot vacuums you'll see on sale this Black Friday will be self-emptying ones, and there's a reason that feature is more common than not nowadays. Having a robot vacuum typically means you'll be vacuuming more often, and that means a fuller dustbin faster — but thanks to the universalization of the self-emptying dock, you won't have a hard time outsourcing dustbin duty for more than $300 or $400.
SEE ALSO: Roomba models, explained: The guide to deciding which Roomba to buy on Black FridayThis wasn't the case even a few years ago, when automatic emptying was a feature reserved for the high-end robot vacs from a select few brands that were ahead of the game. Now, there are tons of options on both ends of the spectrum, including super affordable, compact options that barely take up more room than a non self-emptying option.
If your budget is a little more flexible, you can squeeze more out of your $500 to $1,000 during Black Friday and secure not only automatic emptying, but automatic water refilling and automatic mopping pad washing and drying. All of the big brands like iRobot, Shark, Roborock, and Eufy all have at least one robot vacuum and mop combo that deals with its own dust and dirty mopping pads all in the same dock, and nearly all of them have gotten a groundbreaking discount for Black Friday 2024.
SEE ALSO: Why Eufy's X10 Pro Omni is the most surprising robot vacuum I've tested all yearAnd by "groundbreaking discounts," I mean new record-low prices across the board, giving you plenty of options to treat yourself to hands-off cleaning amid holiday stress. I'm tracking the best self-emptying robot vacuum deals below and will be refreshing this list as more options pop up throughout Cyber Monday. Note: All newly added or updated deals have been marked with a ✨, while struck-through deals were either sold out or expired at the time of writing.
Best Black Friday self-emptying robot vacuum deal Opens in a new window Credit: Roborock Roborock Q Revo S $459.99 at AmazonI think of the Roborock Qrevo S as the diet version of my favorite self-emptying robot vacuum right now, the Roborock Qrevo Master. And unless you're one of the few open to spending $1,000 or more on a robot vacuum, you can probably deal with the Qrevo S skipping the Qrevo Master's fluff features like a livestream pet camera or extending side mop.
And anyway, the most important aspect about the Qrevo S is that it has that coveted self-washing and drying mopping pad feature baked into its self-empty dock. I also have to give Roborock credit for arming this Qrevo with the same dual spinning mopping pads as the Qrevo Master, which I feel do a more detailed mopping job than a singular pad that lays flat across the bottom of the vacuum.
If it sweetens the deal at all, just know that I had already honed in on the Roborock Qrevo S as one of the best early Black Friday robot vacuum deals when it originally went on sale for $549.99 in early November. Now, it's almost $100 cheaper than that.

With Black Friday is inching closer and closer, the book deals are spectacular so you don't need to splurge either. Find top best-sellers — both fiction and non-fiction — for as low as $0.99. Here are the best Black Friday deals on Kindle books.
When is Black Friday? With Thanksgiving finally here, Black Friday is tomorrow, on Friday, Nov. 29.
However, you don't need to wait 24 hours for deals. "Early" Black Friday deals have already started to roll out, giving a jumpstart to the shopping season. While in-store deals may kick-off on Nov. 29, online sales will run all month long.
Do you need a Kindle to read Kindle books?Yes and no. Unlike a standard e-book that can be read on any device, Kindle books can only be read on Kindle devices or the Kindle app. The Kindle app gives you flexibility so you don't need to spend a hundred dollars on an e-reader. Although we do have to say, Kindles are totally worth it.
The Kindle app is available on iOS and Android devices so you can read Kindle books on your existing smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
But the best news this Black Friday is that Amazon has marked down nearly all of their new Kindles. You can find savings up to 23% on the brand's e-readers, including the top-tier Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, which is down to $154.99.
Best fiction deal Opens in a new window Credit: Amazon "Margo's Got Money Troubles" by Rufi Thorpe $1.99 at AmazonMargo's Got Money Troubles is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. After a short-lived affair with her professor, Margo Millet finds herself 20, pregnant and alone, while navigating financial woos and upcoming motherhood. Rufi Thorpe's novel is a 2024 hit with an Apple TV+ series already in development, starring the likes of Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Nick Offerman.
This acclaimed novel is just $1.99 ahead of Black Friday. That knocks $13 off the price for 87% savings.

Nothing makes your home office official like a printer. Whether you’re after a laser printer built for speed and efficiency or an inkjet printer that delivers rich graphics on demand, modern printers and scanners are better than ever — right now, early Black Friday deals from Amazon and other retailers mean they’re also more affordable.
Black Friday is one of the best times all year round to snag killer savings on printers and scanners like the Epson EcoTank ET-2800. This year major retailers like Amazon and Best Buy are taking Black Friday printer deals live a full week ahead of time, here are our favorites:
Best printer-scanner combo deal Opens in a new window Credit: Epson Epson EcoTank ET-280 $179.99 at AmazonIf you owned a printer in the early 2000s then you’re probably used to ink cartridges that are so exorbitantly priced they can feel like alchemist’s materials. The Epson EcoTank ET-280 is an absolute innovation from that era. The EcoTank uses large ink tanks that are easy to refill and affordable to run … we’re talking much more affordable. Epson even comes right out and says it, stating that EcoTank refills can be 90 percent more affordable than older ink cartridges.
Good quality color printing with drastically cheaper ink? What’s not to like? Especially when the printer itself is 36% off at its lowest price ever.
