It's no secret that the world of dating apps and websites involves the collection of an enormous amount of data. How could it be otherwise? You're voluntarily telling these companies how old you are, where you live, what you're looking for, and maybe even how much money you earn or your level of education. 

All of this may just be "personal details" to you, or to the people you're trying to match with, but to the companies that own the sites and apps you're using, this is valuable information that can be used to serve you ads or even sold to third-party data collection companies. 

If you're privacy-minded, or if you just want to do your due diligence before you commit your time and maybe even your money to a company, it's worth knowing about each app or site's privacy policy and how it does or doesn't protect your information. 

Here's a quick overview of the data protection policies of some of the most common hookup apps:

AdultFriendFinder is unusual in the constellation of hookup apps and websites for the simple reason that it allows and even encourages its members to post nude photographs and videos, so as you can imagine, their privacy policy should be both transparent and robust.

Thankfully, they are unequivocal about what they won't do with your private information: "We DO NOT sell, rent, or give any personally identifiable information about you to any third party without your permission."

One thing they do note, however, is that if you opt to log in to AFF through a third-party authorization site like Facebook or Google, those companies will have access to your profile name, email address and profile photo, which is something to keep in mind, especially if you don't want other people knowing you're using this site.

Tinder privacy policy

Tinder has one of the more robust privacy policies we've come across, but the impression it gives the reader is that it was written by lawyers less to inform you, the user, of your privacy rights and more to indemnify Tinder for how it uses your data. 

To begin with, they operate under an "opt out" rather than an "opt in" paradigm, so the default Tinder account is set up to allow lots of data collection, including "access to specific types of device data such as phone contacts, pictures, advertising identifiers and location services," on top of all the data you're already voluntarily sharing with Tinder. 

And unlike AFF, which was so emphatic about their refusal to sell your data that they resorted to using caps lock, Tinder uses slippery legal language: "If we 'sell' or 'share' your data or use it for 'targeted advertising,' we will provide an opt out in the 'Your Privacy Choices' link in the footer of our website and in the Settings menu of the app." The sentence begins with a conditional and then puts quotation marks around two words (sell and share) that have a pretty commonly understood meaning — not a good sign!

If you've been a long-time Tinder user and are suddenly concerned with what the app might know about you, we recommend you request a copy of your personal data, which the site allows you to download as a ZIP file, so you can see exactly what they've collected on you and decide for yourself if you want to keep using the app. 

Pure privacy policy

What about Pure, the privacy-first app that boasts about deleting your message history after 24 hours? Their privacy policy is lengthy and comprehensive, but it's also less precise than it could be. 

For example, when discussing what data Pure shares with third parties, it prominently names "service providers" as an entity that might receive your data, but they bury the lede in a lengthy list of who exactly qualifies as a service provider: "providers of telecommunications systems, email, database, hosting, customer-communication tools, outsourcing, payment, user verification, advertising, marketing, analytics, anti-spam service, security, fraud prevention, and trust and safety moderation."

Pure acknowledges that these third-party services "may also use your Personal Data for their own purposes," but then also states that, "We do not allow our third-party service providers to use your Personal Data for their own purposes and only permit them to process your Personal Data for specified purposes and in accordance with our instructions." Pure didn't respond to Mashable's request for comment about what this means.

And if you're a California resident, Pure uses an "opt out" rather than an "opt in" approach to data collection, so if you do plan on using the app, it's worth thoroughly exploring your account settings to ensure you're not sharing more data with the company than you would like.

Best Buy is running a weeklong "Tech Fest" sale from June 22 to 28 in 2026. It's historically Amazon's biggest competitor when it comes to tech deals, with Amazon one-upping Best Buy by literal cents in many cases. Still, if you're looking for laptops, TVs, gaming gear, or small appliances, Best Buy is the spot to shop. The retailer's inventory is more comprehensive in these departments overall. Not to mention, Best Buy often stocks older devices that Amazon no longer carries. For instance, check out this $300 discount on a specced out Apple M4 MacBook Air.

Walmart

The competing Prime Day Walmart Summer Deals event runs from June 22 to 28, matching Best Buy's sale. Walmart's past sales have highlighted some excellent deals on Apple accessories, budget TVs (the cheapest QLED TV we saw last Prime Day), floor care from top brands like Dyson and Shark, toys (including Lego), and surprisingly good outdoor gear.

Target

Target is going head-to-head with Amazon this year, with its Circle Deal Days event running from June 23 through 26. Like Amazon, you have to be a Circle member to shop the best deals. Unlike Amazon, it's free to join. As in previous Circle shopping events, this year's counter-Prime Day sale at Target will feature "Deal of the Day" offers, which are only available for 24 hours. Be on the lookout for these each day. Other notable offers include up to 45% off select kitchen gadgets from Cuisinart, Keurig, and Ninja, up to 45% off floor care from Bissell and Hoover, 40% off back-to-school essentials, and 40% off select women's clothing and beauty items.

The Home Depot

• Top deals to watch: cordless tools, grills, lawncare, outdoor gear

The Home Depot kicked off a Father's Day sale earlier this month, and it wraps up mid-Prime Day on June 24. From there, things will switch over to a 4th of July sale and run through July 8. If you're looking for cordless tools, lawn care equipment, outdoor cooking gear, or DIY tools and storage, this is the sale to shop. Early deals already include free cordless DeWalt tools, and we're likely to see more free stuff in the coming days.

If you're looking to buy your first portable power station, the Anker Solix C1000 Gen 2 is an excellent all-around model. It offers a respectable 1,024Wh capacity, which is a bit like a Goldilocks amount. That's a good amount of power for a weekend away, but it doesn't go overboard. It's also easy to transport, coming in at under 25 pounds. It has excellent recharging ability, going from dead to 100% power in under 50 minutes. It's a summer essential for me, and it's also excellent during a power outage.

Don't ask ChatGPT which robot vacuum you should buy on Prime Day — ask the person who's tested nearly 40 robot vacuums in their own home. Most of the best robot vacuums of the past few years, including new 2026 models, are on sale for Prime Day between June 23 and June 26. Since the event has officially kicked off, I found a handful of worthwhile robot vacuums on sale to buy right now.

That doesn't just refer to the models with the biggest discounts. I've further whittled down the list to the robot vacuums with the best ratio of cleaning specs and smart features compared to their sale price.

For example, the Roborock Saros 10R that I loved last year is on sale for $899.99 ($700 off), which is a new record low. That sounds like a steal until I remind you that you can get significantly more suction power for $699.99 with the Dreame L60 Ultra FE. The self-emptying Shark Navigator for $246.95 sounds great until you realize that just $18 more can get you mopping and small obstacle avoidance with the Roborock Q10 S5+. (If you're shopping for a really high-end robot vacuum, I recommend the Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete, which is now $355 off, or the Narwal Flow 2, which is $450 off.)

Not to rope the Roborock Saros 10R back into it, but it really does make the Dreame L60 Ultra FE's value stand out. This model was just released at the end of April 2026, and its 30,000 Pa suction power isn't too far off from the 35,000 Pa of the most powerful Dreame robot vacuum. With accurate AI obstacle avoidance and heated self-washing mopping pads thrown in, this is a really solid vacuum for less than $800.

I can personally attest to the L60 Ultra FE's cleaning power for the price — it's currently sitting in my living room. I'm a sucker for the corner mopping of a spinning mopping pad, which still squeezes into 90-degree angles better than roller mop robot vacuums that can slide out to clean edges. This Dreame model has done a commendable job with cat litter, crumbs under the kitchen counter, and cat scratcher flecks stuck in the rug.

The ongoing global RAM shortage has led many PC makers to raise their laptop prices this year. Even Apple's MacBooks are at risk of price bumps in the near future. Mercifully, Amazon's annual Prime Day sale is offering some sweet RAMageddon relief this week, slashing prices on select PCs through June 26.

As Mashable's resident expert on all things laptops, I want to note that Amazon carries a much smaller selection of Windows laptops, gaming laptops, and Chromebooks than other major retailers — especially Best Buy, which happens to be running a competing Tech Fest sale this week. I've rounded up Amazon's most worth-it laptop deals below and made sure all of them aren't cheaper elsewhere. But don't feel like you need to be loyal to it just because Prime Day is hogging the spotlight right now.

Amazon's amazing Prime Day deal on this 15-inch model comes just a week after Microsoft announced the very similar Surface Laptop 8 (which isn't on sale just yet). It's currently listed for just $1,229.99 — a whopping 44% off its regular retail price of $2,099.99. I haven't tried this 16-inch budget gaming laptop, but our friends over at CNET rated it a solid 7.7/10, writing that it "provides enough 3D graphics oomph for 1080p/1200p gaming." (Mashable and CNET are both owned by Ziff Davis.) It features four-zone RGB keyboard backlighting and a big, buttery 180Hz display. Plus, it's kitted out with plenty of RAM and storage — and the latter is easily upgradable. It usually retails for $1,399.99, but it's on sale for just $1,099.99 this Prime Day. That's a record-low price that last appeared on Black Friday 2025.

Prime Day season is one of the best times of year to buy a TV on sale. Usually in July, Prime Day is here earlier than usual, running June 23 to 26. Maybe Amazon knew that the World Cup would make everyone realize they were in need of a new TV.

Hisense finally launched its highly-awaited RGB TVs on June 2. Kindle users might be the most passionate sect of BookTok, coming up with hacks to maximize the device's potential, through page turners or Stuff Your Kindle Day events. And we get it, they're the best e-readers out there. In 2024, Amazon released a new lineup of Kindles that improved upon the previous generation, which we already loved.

I've tested the Kindle Paperwhite, and spoiler alert, I do think it's a better value than the Signature Edition. However, the SE isn't without its merits. Let's get into the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 12th generation, and whether you should buy it over the basic Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite.

Plus, I've now been using the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition for 18 months — do I still like it?

The Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition are essentially the same device; the Signature Edition just has the addition of a few special features. You can read all the in-depth details about why we like the Paperwhite in my review, but here's the TL;DR.

The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is lightning fast. In comparison to the 2021 edition, the difference is noticeable, with no hesitation when flipping through pages. However, the biggest improvement comes when switching between books in your library, as it zips through tasks.

With a 7-inch screen, the SE got a slight size increase, while the resolution of 300 ppi and maximum brightness of 94 nits remain the same between generations. That being said, the display on this generation looks higher contrast, making it sharper and easier to read. Plus, it remains waterproof, perfect for taking along to the bathtub, beach, or pool.

Not to mention it comes with 32GB of storage. If you're thinking in terms of phones or tablets, that amount of storage might seem small, but keep in mind that 32GB has the potential to hold up to 32,000 e-books.

You get all of these great features in both the Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition, so what makes the SE unique?

The same great battery life as the Kindle Paperwhite

Kindles are unbeatable on one front: battery life. The Kindle Paperwhite and Signature Edition boast the same battery life of up to 12 weeks. The Signature Edition can go months without charging, but it doesn't have a longer life than the standard Paperwhite. The only battery life bonus you get with the Signature Edition is its wireless charging capabilities.

The Paperwhite vs. Signature Edition: What does $40 extra get you?

The Paperwhite Signature Edition has several added features that come with its $40 increase in price. For $199.99, it comes with an ad-free lock screen, 32GB of storage, auto-adjusting brightness, and wireless charging. Plus, it comes in metallic versions of the Kindle Paperwhite's black, jade, and raspberry.

Among the added features, the lock screen is the biggest draw. On a standard Kindle, ads pop up on the lock screen, forcing Amazon's recommendations on you. Not necessarily a dealbreaker, but still plenty annoying. So the Signature Edition does away with the ads, freeing you from the chains of capitalism (sort of). However, this does come with one catch. The ad-free lock screen tends to unlock easily when tossing it into a bag since there's no 'swipe to unlock' mechanism that the ad-enabled devices have. So if you're going to get the Signature Edition, make sure to get a case with a cover.

Auto-adjusting brightness

In terms of the other features, I didn't think they were anything to write home about. The auto-adjusting brightness didn't work consistently, even when I went from reading next to a lamp to turning off the lights; the auto-adjustment didn't kick in, and I always had to manually turn the brightness down.

Wireless charging

The wireless charging, while nice, didn't feel like the most necessary addition since you need to charge the device every three months. Plus, with most devices using USB-C these days, I'm never in short supply of chargers.

Now let's address the 32GB in the room. For an e-reader, that is an exorbitant amount of storage. It's double the amount of the standard Kindle Paperwhite, and again, 32,000 books' worth of storage. That is a lot of books. Is that much necessary? In my professional opinion, no, especially when you can remove downloaded books from your device and redownload from the Kindle cloud at any time. So if you think you need all that storage, you probably don't, and it's not worth splurging an extra $40 on it.

Differences between the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 12th generation and 11th generation

If you already have the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 11th generation, you may be wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to the next generation. Short answer: Absolutely not. Unless your 11th-gen Signature Edition has kicked the bucket, the differences between the 11th generation and 12th generation are negligible. Both devices have all the premium features of 32GB of storage, wireless charging, auto-adjusting brightness, and no lockscreen ads.

The main differences between the two devices are faster processing and a slightly larger screen. Having used both devices, the processing speeds are extremely similar, but the 12th generation's extra speed is admittedly hard to notice. The larger screen size is nice, but it's only a difference of .2-inches.

All that to say, don't run to upgrade unless your old device is on its last leg.

Do I still use the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition?

I first published this review in December 2024, so more than 18 months later, what do I think of the Paperwhite Signature Edition? Well, I use it every day. After a year and a half of use, the SE still has impressive performance, quickly maneuvering through pages and loading new downloads quickly. It has slowed down some; I noticed it particularly when turning on the device, but it's pretty negligible. What hasn't faltered? The battery life, which lasts for months at a time.

I'm lucky enough to have the whole Kindle lineup at my disposal, so why is the Signature Edition the one I keep reaching for? Lack of ads on the lockscreen is a big one, although the standard Paperwhite can be ad-free for just $20 more. What keeps me coming back to the Signature Edition is its 32GB of storage.

Many of the books I read are downloaded directly to my Kindle, and currently, I have 175 books on my SE. Those books take up only 674MB of storage, and I still have 24.8GB (or 24,800MB) available. Doing just a little math, that means I have room for over 6,000 more downloads. Do I think I'll ever actually have over 6,000 books on my Kindle? Probably not, but it's nice to not have to think twice about adding a new book to my device.

For the average user, I don't think the Signature Edition is a worthy upgrade. The Kindle Paperwhite is far better bang for your buck, packed with everything you need for the ultimate reading experience. It might be worth the splurge if you do have storage concerns — maybe you've maxed out on 16GB on previous Kindle models. Otherwise, 16GB will be fine. And if you're really put off by lock screen ads, then the Signature Edition is going to be your preferred device.

Plus, it has some real longevity. I've been using it for 18 months, and it's barely slowed down. So even if it's an investment, you won't be buying a new one for years.

I used to own one of these until it succumbed to a very tragic bout of human error, but before that, it was the most dependable thing in my house. If you have pets (I have two beagles), this thing is a lifesaver. It lifts ground-in pet stains out of carpets and couches almost immediately.

The only real caveat is that it sounds like a small jet engine taking off in your living room. But honestly, for how well the 4-inch Tough Stain Tool removes stains from rugs, couches, and car seats, the noise is totally worth it. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and small enough to shove into a closet when you're done.

After testing dozens of portable power stations, the Anker Solix C2000 Gen 2 is the model I take on every camping trip. I like to slightly overestimate my power needs while camping (what if I decide to stay an extra night?), so I prefer the 2,048Wh offered by the C2000 Gen 2.

Anker made this as lightweight as possible, and despite landing in the 2k Wh category, it only weighs about 42 pounds. That'll be a manageable weight for camping trips where the campsite is near the car. It's also perfect for powering up the outdoor projector in the backyard for movie nights this summer. The Soundcore P30i earbuds fall well within a budget price but don't skimp out on features. As a Prime Day treat, Amazon has them on sale for only $23.69 in all colorways, down from the list price of $49.99 at Soundcore.

According to Mashable's list of the best budget earbuds, the Soundcore P30i have the most impressive sound for an option under $50 (now under $25). "The active noise cancellation on them is impressive for their price, able to block out the bustle of busy streets or the noisy gym," wrote Mashable Shopping Reporters Bethany Allard and Samantha Mangino.

One of the most notable is the Echo Show 11, which, at 32% off, sits $20 below the previous record low price. The Amazon Echo Dot Max also dropped to $64.99, which is $10 less than its last lowest price ever.

If you want to incorporate Alexa+, and its abilities to control your smart home and make meal plans and manage your calendar, the Echo Show 11 is designed to do exactly that.
