Solar eclipse 2026: An eclipse will happen Tuesday, but its only viewable from a remote spot

Mashable - Mon, 02/16/2026 - 12:13

The first solar eclipse of 2026 will hit our skies this week, with an annular eclipse taking place on Tuesday. This type of solar eclipse creates a "ring of fire" around the sun, but unfortunately, many of won't be able to spot this solar phenomenon. Still curious? Keep reading to find out what's happening, and where in the world you need to be to see it.

When is the solar eclipse?

The annular solar eclipse will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 17. According to Time and Date, the first sightings of the eclipse will begin at 6:42 a.m. ET.

Where can you see the solar eclipse?

Unfortunately, this annular solar eclipse is a remote one. The only place to be able to view the full eclipse will be Antartica. However, some places in the Southern Hemisphere will get a glimpse of a partial eclipse, according to Time and Date.

What is an annular solar eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but is slightly too far away to completely cover the Sun, according to NASA. This creates a bright “ring of fire” around the Moon. This is different to a total solar eclipse where the sun is fully hidden.

A partial solar eclipse happens when the Moon only covers part of the Sun. So, from these locations in the Southern Hemisphere, the Sun looks like it has a chunk taken out of it, rather than forming a full ring.

How to see a solar eclipse

If you happen to be in one of the viewing spots for the partial eclipse (or maybe, somehow, you're in Antartica?), it's important to follow specific guidance for looking at the eclipse. Even with an annular eclipse, the same rule of thumb applies to never look at the sun directly.

To safely view the eclipse, NASA recommends using solar viewing glasses or making your own eclipse projector using a cardboard box.

Google responds to claim that it stole NPR hosts voice

Mashable - Mon, 02/16/2026 - 12:11

Radio host David Greene is suing Google, alleging that the tech giant copied his voice for its NotebookLM AI tool, the Washington Post and others reported — and Google has responded.

Greene is the former co-host of NPR's Morning Edition and currently the host of the Left, Right, & Center podcast from the NPR member station KCRW. Greene found out about NotebookLM, which autogenerates podcasts, from a former coworker and was "completely freaked out," he told the Post.

SEE ALSO: OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger joins OpenAI

The complaint, which was filed on January 23 in California, states that Google "sought to replicate Mr. Greene's distinctive voice — a voice made iconic over decades of decorated radio and public commentary — to create synthetic audio products that mimic his delivery, cadence, and persona." The suit claims that Google violated California and common law statutory right to publicity, which concerns unauthorized uses of someone's likeness, and California's unfair competition law. It also alleges that Google unjustly benefited from Greene's voice.

Google told the Post and other publications that NotebookLM has nothing to do with Greene. "These allegations are baseless," Google spokesperson José Castañeda told Gizmodo. "The sound of the male voice in NotebookLM's Audio Overviews is based on a paid professional actor Google hired."

The use of people's likeness in AI models, as well as the use of copyrighted materials to train models, has been a contentious topic in recent years. In 2024, OpenAI took down its AI-powered voice, Sky, after allegations that it sounded like Scarlett Johansson, who explicitly didn't give the company permission to use her likeness. Several lawsuits have been launched against major tech and AI companies using copyrighted material to train their AI.

Back in January, major artists, including Johansson, launched a campaign against AI slop and theft.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

One of my favorite air purifiers is on sale for a record-low price ahead of spring pollen season

Mashable - Mon, 02/16/2026 - 11:09

SAVE $100: The Levoit Sprout air purifier is on sale at Amazon for $179.99, down from the list price of $279.99. That's a 36% discount that matches the lowest we've ever seen at Amazon.

We're still dealing with chilly temps, but in just a few weeks, we'll push the clocks forward one hour and spring will be well on its way. The flowers are pretty, but the pollen that comes with spring season can be a major issue. Instead of dealing with the sniffles and itchy eyes, equip your home with a worthy air purifier. One of Mashable's favorite models is on a major sale during Amazon's Presidents' Day sale event.

As of Feb. 16, the Levoit Sprout air purifier is on sale at Amazon for $179.99, marked down from the list price of $279.99. That's a 36% discount that matches the lowest we've ever seen at Amazon.

If you deal with allergies from pollen or pets or you live in an area that's prone to wildfire smoke, you know how important purifying indoor air can be for overall health. When I was testing the best air purifiers for smoke, I ran into the Levoit Sprout and it quickly became one of my very favorite models. I still use it daily.

The Levoit Sprout comes with features that are unique to this specific model that no other brand has replicated. It has a built-in nightlight, a white-noise machine, and it gives highly detailed air-quality metrics both on the air purifier itself and in the app. All of these features easily make it worth the slightly higher price point.

The white-noise feature and nightlight make the Levoit Sprout great for a kids' room or the nursery, but I love it for myself. The nightlight's range of color brightness and warmth are perfect for finding the best hue for evening reading on my Kobo before bed.

SEE ALSO: The best Presidents' Day mattress deals — save up to 60% on mattresses, beds, sheets, and pillows

In terms of metrics, the Levoit Sprout can display the room's AQI on the unit itself. But one of my favorite aspects is heading into the app to see the CO2 level, temperature, humidity, and TVOC levels. These in-depth metrics are so useful to have and incredibly rare to get from an air purifier. As you'd want with an air purifier, the Sprout uses a HEPA filter that's said to capture 99.9% of particles that could be irritants like fine dust, pet dander, and pollen.

While this versatile model is on sale, upgrade to the Levoit Sprout. It's a terrific bedside model for any bedroom and it'll be excellent to have ahead of pollen season.

Grab the EcoFlow River 2 Max portable power station for its best price ever

After a recent ice storm knocked out my power for days in sub-zero temperatures, I cannot recommend a portable power station enough. Not only can these devices keep your essentials charged up in emergencies, but many can even run a low-wattage space heater or a heated blanket to keep you warm. In a time where unpredictable weather has become the norm, these movable power sources can really be a lifesaver. They're not the cheapest investments, though, so when you find a deal — like this EcoFlow River 2 Max discount at Amazon — it's definitely worth grabbing.

As of Feb. 16, the EcoFlow River 2 Max portable power station is on sale for just $268.98 at Amazon. That's 43% or $200 off its list price of $469 and its lowest price on record.

Lightweight at just over 13 pounds and about the size of an air fryer, the River 2 Max is the definition of portable. It packs four AC outlets, one USB-C port, three USB-A ports, two DC outlets, and one cart outlet. With an output of up to 1000W, you can run up to 11 different gadgets at once. It recharges in just an hour through an AC outlet or about 2.3 hours via solar panels, but you'll have to grab those separately.

Because of its impressive power in a small package, the EcoFlow River 2 Max also makes a great companion for camping. Use it to keep your gear powered up on off-grid adventures, then bring it home for use as an emergency backup. We love a double duty device.

This limited-time offer likely won't be around for long, so add it to your cart ASAP if you want to score it for its lowest price ever.

When it comes to smartwatches, Garmin always tops the list in terms of the best battery life. The brand's many watch options can last for over a week without needing a recharge — something Apple still can't seem to figure out. If you're looking for a smartwatch that can accompany your health and fitness journey without constantly needing to be plugged in, Garmin is the way to go.

For Presidents' Day, two of Garmin's most impressive smartwatches are on sale for up to 48% off at Amazon. First up, the Garmin epix Pro (Gen 2) is down to $523.60 from $999.99. That's over $476 off and its best price on record. If that's still out of your price range, the Garmin Instinct 2X Solar is also on sale for just $296.10 at Amazon. That's 34% or over $153 off its list price.

Rocking a shiny AMOLED display with a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and titanium bezel, the sleek epix Pro is built for fitness fanatics. It goes way beyond just tracking your heart rate and caloric burn; it's packed with advanced features that track pulse oxygen levels, stress, body battery, respiration, recovery time, real-time endurance, running pace, heart rate variability, and much more. There's even a built-in flashlight for late-night or early-morning training. It'll last you up to 10 days in smartwatch mode.

If the epix Pro is out of your price range, the Instinct 2X Solar is also an excellent fitness tracker option that's packed with features. It tracks many of the same metrics and also includes a built-in flashlight. Where it differs is its solar-powered display. When you expose the Instinct 2X Solar to three hours of direct sunlight per day, you'll essentially get unlimited battery life.

One thing to note: Both of these discounts are Lightning deals at Amazon, which means you'll have to grab them before the progress bar at the top of the page reaches 100. Or before the timer runs out, whichever comes first.

Presidents' Day sales are famous for discounting two specific things: mattresses and TVs. Honestly, I’d argue the deals on these items are often better now than on Black Friday, and Amazon is leaning hard into the trend by slashing prices on its own tech.

If you’re looking to replace an aging living room TV or just want a smart hub that doubles as a display, there are tons of options right now. As of Feb. 16, you can get the 55-inch Amazon Fire TV 4-Series for $279.99, down from $459.99, at Amazon. That’s a 39% discount of $180.

SEE ALSO: The best Presidents' Day TV deals: Save big on TCL, Samsung, Hisense, and more

The 4-Series offers a 4K UHD picture with HDR10+ support, meaning your movies and shows will look significantly more vibrant than on standard HD screens. You’ll also get an Alexa Voice Remote to access apps just by asking. If you’re a fan of "The Frame" aesthetic, this TV features an "Ambient Experience" that transforms the black display into artwork or photos when it's idle.

If $280 is still a stretch (totally get it!), I actually bought the Insignia 55-inch Class F50 Series for $179.99 Friday, which IMO was a total steal. I even grabbed a matching soundbar for just $35. I bought them both at Best Buy, but Amazon is matching most of these prices, so you can shop wherever is most convenient.

Apple to host a special experience on March 4. What might happen.

Mashable - Mon, 02/16/2026 - 10:14

Notable Apple fans and publications have begun receiving invites to a "special Apple experience" in New York, London, and Shanghai.

The experience is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET on March 4, 9to5Mac reports. The invite (posted on social media) doesn't contain any more details than that, but as is usually the case with cryptic messages from Apple, people have already started speculating what it all means.

SEE ALSO: Apple Vision Pro finally gets an official YouTube app

The invite features the Apple logo with a yellow, green, and blue gradient, prompting one Redditor to guess that these will be the new MacBook colors. Meanwhile, according to MacRumors, Apple is expected to announce several products soon, including the iPhone 17e, MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, eighth-generation iPad Air, twelfth-generation iPad, and more.

The announcement states that it will be an "experience," not an event, and as of this publication, it's not listed on the official Apple event page. The only certainty is that more rumors will crop up between now and March 4.

OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger joins OpenAI

Mashable - Mon, 02/16/2026 - 09:41

The founder of viral AI assistant OpenClaw, formerly known as Moltbot and Clawdbot, is now joining OpenAI. The recent, quick name change may have been a hint.

Developer Peter Steinberger made the announcement on his website on Friday (which happened to be Valentine's Day — hard launch?). He began by saying that the last month was a "whirlwind" due to the waves that Clawdbot/Moltbot/OpenClaw made, and many opportunities opened up to him.

SEE ALSO: ChatGPT caricature trend: What to do if OpenAI clearly knows too much

While OpenClaw could become a huge company, Steinberger wrote, it's not exciting for him as a builder at heart. He "did the whole creating-a-company game already," he wrote, presumably talking about his document software company, Nutrient (formerly PSPDFKit).

So, he's onto his next mission: "to build an agent that even my mum can use."

"What I want is to change the world, not build a large company and teaming up with OpenAI is the fastest way to bring this to everyone," he continued.

Steinberger noted that it's important to him that OpenClaw remain open source and hopes to make the project a foundation. OpenAI will sponsor OpenClaw and has made "strong commitments," but Steinberger didn't divulge what those commitments are.

The news comes at a time when OpenAI is retiring its popular, sycophantic GPT-4o and starting to test ads.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, in April 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

Juventus finished the group stage three points ahead of Galatasaray, but that doesn't count for anything at this stage. This is a really difficult game to predict. Juventus are probably slight favorites to advance, but Galatasaray will be looking to gain an advantage in this first leg at home.

One of the biggest obstacles to upgrading your gaming setup’s monitor to an OLED is the high price point of big-brand models, but Alienware might have just solved that problem. As of Feb. 16, the 34-inch Alienware QD-OLED gaming monitor (AW3423DWF model) has dropped to $499.99 on Amazon, marking the lowest price we’ve seen for this premium ultrawide gaming screen — as confirmed with price tracker camelcamelcamel

You’re getting a monitor that’s built around a 34-inch Quantum Dot OLED panel with a 3440x1440 resolution and a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, and designed to pull you into games without cluttering your desk with multiple displays. The 1,800R curve aims to keep visuals comfortably in view, while the deep contrast and vibrant color performance helps everything from competitive shooters like Fortnite to cinematic RPGs such as Final Fantasy XVI or Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Performance-wise, you’re looking at a speedy 165Hz refresh rate paired with an ultra-fast 0.1ms response time, which should keep fast-paced action feeling smooth and responsive. What’s more, support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 also helps reduce screen tearing and enhance darker scenes; this makes it especially great for both longer gaming sessions or when you’re playing in a well-lit room, which could normally make darker gameplay moments or cutscenes harder to see.

Beyond gaming, Alienware also has its Creator Mode and extensive connectivity options, which make it a flexible pick for content creation or multitasking workflows. Along with customizable AlienFX lighting and a sleek Legend 2.0 design, there’s lots of added value in this almost $200 price cut.

For other gaming monitors at a bargain price, Amazon has also cut the price of the 57-inch Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 by 35% for Presidents’ Day. If you don’t want to go for anything much bigger than this Alienware model, the 40-inch Samsung Odyssey G7 Curved gaming monitor is also on sale at $450 off

Last spring when I tested the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid mattress, I was shocked by the quality to price ratio. It feels like a luxury mattress you'd encounter at a 5-star hotel, but its price falls into the affordable range. In fact, a single night's stay at some 5-star resorts would cost more than this mattress.

The DreamCloud Premier is a hybrid bed that combines a plush pillow-top with ultra supportive memory foam and coil layers. The edge-support is also noteworthy. When testing, I felt like this was a great option for couples thanks to the motion isolation or anyone who's a combination sleeper and needs support in several positions.

The DreamCloud Presidents Day Sale tosses in a mattress protector, bamboo sheet set, and two cooling pillows. If you're shopping for a queen-size, you'll be able to get the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid with these accessories for $1,099.
