What is Connections? The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. When Apple officially launches its own AI, Apple Intelligence, later this year – prepare to cough up … nothing.
In fact, according to Bloomberg's Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple users will likely enjoy Apple Intelligence's suite of AI features for free for at least three whole years.
In the latest Power On newsletter, Gurman shares that Apple isn't planning on charging anything for Apple Intelligence – yet. Everything from image generation to its AI writing tools will be free for Apple users until at least 2027.
It should be noted that while Gurman is a reputable source of Apple news, the company has not yet confirmed this new information.
Apple Intelligence is reportedly free until 2027This news about complimentary Apple Intelligence counters what was reported by other analysts just last week. Some analysts speculated that Apple could charge between $10 to $20 for its AI features, with a possibility that Apple Intelligence could be bundled with Apple One as well.
Gurman himself said last month that Apple might charge for Apple Intelligence at some point. Gurman now says that Apple may look to charge for premium Apple Intelligence features down the line, but the company is not currently looking to charge anything for the time being as it pertains to the AI products that Apple will launch later this year. Gurman didn't expand on what those potential premium features might be.
Mashable already tested out some of the Apple Intelligence features coming to iPhone in a few months and was impressed with the Writing Tools, the summarization feature on Safari, AI search for Photos, and the new and improved Siri.
Apple, which is arriving to the AI market much later than any of its competitors, is clearly looking to focus on marketing its Apple Intelligence tools in order to catch up. When Apple Intelligence first arrives to the iPhone later this year, Apple fans will be able to use the features free of charge. And now it appears it'll be that way for quite some time, too.
As Donald Trump and his reelection campaign drops in the polls, the former president is making at least one big move in hopes of altering the trajectory.
On Monday, Trump returned to Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, with a slew of posts promoting his presidential campaign and attacking the Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Trump also promoted an upcoming interview with Musk over X's Spaces platform, which will take place on Monday night.
The first official post back on the @realDonaldTrump account was a campaign video upload published just after 11am ET. However, the account also posted a paid advertisement right before 3am ET.
Some X users noted how they see Trump's sudden return to X as a desperate attempt to reverse his falling poll numbers.
Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deletedOthers noted how they were excited to see Trump back on X.
Tweet may have been deleted Trump's return to XTrump's account previously posted just once before since being "permanently" suspended by the company then-known as Twitter in January 2021 following his supporters' Capitol building attack. Musk reinstated Trump's account in November 2022, shortly after he acquired the company. On August 24, 2023, Trump's account posted for the first time since his suspension. The post included a photo of his then-brand new indictment mugshot, which he has used for his campaign merchandise.
However, after that one August post last year, Trump has gone without posting on X again for nearly a year. As of the publishing time of this piece, Trump's account now has posted or reposted eight times.
It's unclear if Trump himself is posting as he did prior to being suspended — or if his campaign is using the account.
Trump's (sometimes) unlabeled paid adBefore Trump's account started posting again on Monday, a paid X ad started running on his account in the early morning hours of August 12.
"Are you better off now than you were when I was president?," the post asked, alongside a campaign video and the hashtag #TrumpOnX.
The ad post does not appear on Trump's account, which isn't out of the ordinary. X allows users to promote posts that are strictly ads and don't appear on their profile feed. However, this caused confusion amongst X users who were unfamiliar with X's advertising platform as the post appeared in feeds before Trump's account started publishing posts again.
One big issue with Trump's X ad, however, is that it doesn't always appear labeled as an ad. Trump's X ad has an "ad" label in the upper right hand corner when it appears in a user's feed. However, when opening Trump's X ad in the post view page, the ad label disappears. If a user was sent a direct link to the Trump ad on X, for example, they would not see the ad label.
Here's how Trump's X ad looks in the post feed with the ad label:

Cucumbers, in summer? Groundbreaking.
TikTok food often falls somewhere between grotesque and meh on the deliciousness spectrum. Recipes designed to go viral, it turns out, aren't always the best at producing food that's a pleasure to actually ingest.
Something like the viral feta pasta? Honestly, it was pretty decent. But for every good recipe, there's gross-as-hell air-fried fruit or something that's stuffed, fried, coated in Doritos, and disgusting, but it gets views. TikTok's latest food obsession, however, is actually a great dish. It's simple and delicious. Basically, it's a recipe for a lightly marinated cucumber salad, and folks on the app are loving it.
That makes sense, considering that it's a perfect summer side dish and a regular accompaniment to my fried chicken, another summer favorite.
As far as I can tell, it all started with TikTok creator @logagm, real name Logan, who posted a recipe for the best way "to eat an entire cucumber" in July. Logan, who shares a lot of Korean recipes on the platform, thinly slices the cuke, then lightly marinated it with soy, fish sauce, sugar, MSG, sesame oil, garlic, green onion, and sesame seeds. He shakes it up in a quart-sized container, effectively making a quick cucumber salad. The recipe has racked up more than 9 million views.
Logan, seemingly sensing the moment, has gone on to post a ton of different cucumber recipes. Most lean on Asian flavors and involve a light pickle or marinade. They've all racked up millions of views. And now, of course, TikTok is obsessed with cucumbers. Search around, and cucumber salad videos are everywhere on the app. Massively popular creator Alix Earle made one. So did @boywithnojob. Seriously, look around and see how many different recipes there are.
It makes sense, considering it's summertime in the States, and cucumbers are perfectly refreshing on a hot day. They also have very little taste on their own but take on the flavors of a marinade quite well. As a person who loves food — and cooking sensible meals with good ingredients — it's pretty cool to see people online talking so much about a simple, tasty dish and a humble vegetable (cukes are technically fruit, but, come on, they're a veggie).
Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deletedSo, while summer lasts, TikTok might actually be a great place to get a recipe for a side dish. Because sometimes you really do just need to eat a whole cucumber.
Do you see how I'm writing this article? Starting it with an example of the exact trend I'm about to explain? Very cutesy. Very mindful. Very demure.
Jools Lebron, TikTok's resident "fierce diva" at @joolieannie, has a catchphrase. In a series of videos Jools posted over the past few weeks, we're given advice on how to look "demure" and "mindful" at work and in life.
"You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure. Very mindful," Jools says. "I don't come to work with a green-cut crease. I don't look like a clown when I go to work. I don't do too much. I'm very mindful while I'm at work. You see how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job. A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma. Not demure. I'm very modest. I'm very mindful. You see my shirt? Only a little chee chee out, not my cho cho. Be mindful of why they hired you. Here's your reality check, diva. What's the name you'd like me to make it out to?"
The trend is funny, helpful, demure, and mindful. It's led to a flood of videos of people using the terms "demure," "mindful," and "cutesy" on TikTok, Twitter, and even offline.
Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted Tweet may have been deleted"Demure" does technically mean "reserved, modest, and shy," but don't let the constraints of a dictionary definition control how you use words. You can use it to talk about anything from dental care to a hungover CVS trip.
Please, everyone, enjoy "demure" while it lasts — before something horrible happens, like Jools getting milkshake ducked or a political campaign using it in a TikTok video.
Without my laptop, I’d be lost. Sure, I have a phone and desktop, but I'd be so behind if I couldn’t take my work with me. As someone who travels a lot and is always on the road, having a reliable laptop that can handle my long workdays and hefty workloads is a must.

This model has an M3 chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, more than enough horsepower for most day-to-day tasks. Plus, the nearly $200 discount at Amazon makes this a steal. With 18 hours of battery life and a 13.6-inch display, you’ll be able to work or stream your faves without worrying about running out of juice.

(That’s probably the coolest thing about this laptop — it can transform into a tablet in seconds.) It has 10 hours of battery life and comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage
The specs aren't the most powerful, but for general web browsing, streaming shows, and basic productivity tasks, it gets the job done.

The ASUS ROG Strix G16 16-inch gaming laptop (Intel Core i7-13650HX, 16GB DDR5, 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD) is a little pricier than the other laptops on this list, but that’s because it's a high-performance machine built for gaming.
This laptop features ROG intelligent cooling and a high-resolution display to deliver smooth gameplay. The MUX Switch ups gaming performance by 5 to 10 percent by routing the GPU directly to the display without going through the integrated graphics first.

MacBooks were one product category left alone at Apple's most recent event: WWDC, which happened in June. But MacBooks are still at top of mind for us this summer — I mean, considering back to school season is one of the best times of year to buy a MacBook on sale.
SEE ALSO: Apple will upgrade every Mac model to M4Plus, if a certain Apple product was on your radar but out of your budget when it came out (like the new MacBook Airs released in March), your best bet is to circle back a few months later, as most Apple products get their first noteworthy discounts by that time. In the case of our favorite MacBook deal this week, that discount even beats the previous record-low sale price that we saw in July.
In any case, we've pulled the best MacBook Air and MacBook Pro deals live the week of August 12, from the latest generations to older models (if you're looking for even more of a steal).
Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Our pick: Apple MacBook Air, 13-inch (M3, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $849.98 at AmazonJust released in March 2024, the MacBook Air with an M3 chip has beaten its own record-low pricing: down to $849 from its $898.99 July sale price. Compared to the M2 Air, the M3-equipped model has around 15% faster processing power, supports WiFi 6E, and can support up to two external displays even if the laptop lid is closed. Despite all of that extra juice, the M3 MacBook Air squeezes out around 18 hours of battery life on one charge, and is still super portable — the 13-inch model highlighted here weighs just 2.7 pounds.

Plus, perhaps the best part, you can qualify for item reimbursement if you aren't able to recover your lost items.

While we haven't tested this particular speaker, its pint-sized sibling (the Wonderboom) is one of our absolute favorites. It's regularly $199.99, but as of Aug. 12, it's on sale for just $169.99. That's its first discount since it made its debut in June.

Our lives revolve around screens — most of us switch between our laptops, desktops, and smartphones throughout the day, and some people opt for tablets as an alternative or complementary device. (I have two iMacs, a MacBook, an iPad, and an iPhone.)
SEE ALSO: The best tablets: iPads are great, but have you tried literally anything else?Although not necessary, tablets make working or just watching a show or movie easier in on-the-go situations. It’s way more convenient to whip out a tablet on the subway than it is to pull out a laptop.
If you’re on the lookout for a new tablet, we’ve rounded up the best deals on Amazon right now.
Here are our top picks:
Best iPad deal Opens in a new window Credit: Apple Our pick: Apple iPad 9th gen 10.2-inch (A13, 64GB, WiFi) $224.00 at AmazonThe Apple iPad (9th gen) is Mashable’s top pick for the best tablet “for most people.” What this means is that you don't need to be a power user or have lofty expectations for a tablet to get great value out of the standard iPad.
This model has a 10.2-inch Retina display, 64GB of storage, and an all-day battery life for long commutes or late-night scroll sessions. The A13 Bionic chip means it can handle daily tasks and light gaming without crashing, and the iPadOS software lets you run multiple apps at once.
The iPad (9th gen) is compatible with the Apple Pencil (1st gen) and Smart Keyboard, which makes it a decent laptop alternative in a pinch, though we wouldn’t recommend it for serious work.
If you’re looking for a tablet for light web browsing, streaming, e-books, and casual gaming, this iPad is a solid choice.

If you prefer Android, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ 11-inch tablet is on sale for $179. That’s a pretty good deal for a larger, high-res display and entertainment-focused tablet.
The Galaxy Tab A9+ has an 11-inch screen for streaming movies or playing mobile games. It also features Dolby Atmos speakers, so you can really get into what you’re watching. If this tablet is for your little one, the Samsung Kids app is a built-in feature that provides a safe, curated space for them to play.
This tablet is slim, durable, and lightweight enough to hold comfortably for hours. The Quick Share feature makes sending and receiving files between devices easy in case you’re trying to move things around on the go.

OK, we know Lenovo isn’t exactly a powerhouse when it comes to tablets. But if you need a super cheap tablet for basic tasks, the Lenovo Tab M8 (4th gen) is currently on sale for just $77.71.
This tablet only has 32GB of storage, but if you’re not saving a ton of apps and games, that should be enough for occasional web browsing, streaming, and reading. It has an 8-inch HD display, so the screen quality won't blow you away, but it's decent enough for casual use. And with 16 hours of battery life, it should get you through a long flight or just a quiet night at home.
For the price, it's a good option if you need an affordable tablet that can handle basic tasks.
An update in Google Chrome's browser extension support is bad news for uBlock Origin.
According to PCWorld, Chrome's shift from Manifest V2 to V3 is deprecating certain features that the popular ad-blocker relies on. The Chrome update "aims to... improve the privacy, security, and performance of extensions," by changing the way it manages API requests. That means with the upcoming Chrome update, uBlock Origin will be automatically disabled.
SEE ALSO: This ad blocker and data privacy tool is only $30 for lifeGoogle has been cracking down on ad-blockers across many of its products, like YouTube. It's a real buzzkill for the majority of internet users who try and curtail ads. But it also makes a lot of sense since that's how the tech giant gets revenue by offering free services. That said, some ad-blockers aren't safe or compliant with Google's policies, so you can't blame the company for enforcing that.
The popular ad-blocker, which has over 30 million users, reportedly still works. But a disclaimer at the top of extension page says, "This extension may soon no longer be supported because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions."
Developer Raymond Hill who makes uBlock Origin has scrambled to deploy a fix and now offers uBlock Origin Lite, which is compliant with Manifest V3. It already has 200,000 users, and still has standard ad-blocking capabilities, but is less dynamic in the sense that it requires the user to allow or block permissions on a "per-site basis." In a GitHub post about the new extension, Hill explained that it isn't intended to be a replacement for the original.
"I consider uBO Lite to be too different from uBO to be an automatic replacement," said the developer. "You will have to explicitly find a replacement to uBO according to what you expect from a content blocker. uBO Lite may or may not fulfill your expectations."
uBlock Origin still works on other browsers, so you could always switch to a Chrome alternative like Firefox or Edge. But if you want to stick with Chrome, you have to play by Chrome's rules, and that means getting a different ad-blocker.
Football season has a way of influencing the TV deals market. While the weeks surrounding playoffs are the absolute best football-related time to buy a TV on sale, the weeks surrounding the kickoff to that season are home to some pretty good deals, too. With less than a month left until the first official NFL game of the 2024-2025 season on Sept. 5, there are plenty of options on sale to set yourself up for a more vibrant, less laggy sports watching experience at home.
We've pulled the TV deals worth your consideration during the week of August 12, including a better version of our absolute favorite Prime Day TV deal (plus several other cheap QLED TVs), as well as discounts on 2024 OLED and QLED models from Samsung and LG.
Opens in a new window Credit: TCL TCL 65-inch Q6 QLED 4K Fire TV $348.00 at WalmartOur favorite Prime Day TV deal is still around almost a month later — it's just at Walmart instead of Amazon now, and *checks notes* got cheaper. As of the second full week in August, you can score the 65-inch TCL Q6 QLED for $348 at Walmart (compared to $389.99 at Amazon during Prime Day).
Less than $400 (or $350, even) is an absolutely stellar price for a QLED of this size. No, TCL's Q6 series aren't the most premium QLED TVs on the market, but they're also not the most basic QLED TVs out there. The Q6 gets brighter than TCL's ultra budget Q5 model, making it one of the rare budget QLEDs that actually gets bright and colorful enough to make HDR worthwhile. If you're looking for an affordable way to level up your football watching experience this season, this is it.

Foldable phones have been on the market for roughly five years now, and in that time, there's been plenty of concern about how long the hinges in their screens will hold up. Now imagine a foldable phone that has two hinges.
You may not have to imagine it for too much longer, because what could be the world's first tri-fold foldable phone was spotted on an airplane in China, per Gizmochina. The photo appears to show Huawei executive Yu Richard holding an unusually large foldable phone that appears to have two hinges instead of just the one that you would get in something like a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, Google Pixel Fold, or OnePlus Open.
SEE ALSO: 'Google is a monopolist’: Google loses huge antitrust case over searchThe existence of the device was corroborated by Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, who said it resembled a prototype they had seen. The display is reportedly around 10 inches in size, which would be bigger than any current foldable on the market. However, there are downsides to this. For starters, the phone will likely be more bulky than a regular foldable, while it would certainly be more expensive, too.
There's no evidence that this device will reach mass production anytime soon at the moment, but if you start seeing two-hinge foldables, now you know where it started.
The season two premiere of Yung Miami's podcast Caresha Please was shocking and tea was spilled as the former City Girls star uncharacteristically broke her silence regarding her past relationship with controversial music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs and other controversies.
Yung Miami, whose legal name is Caresha Brownlee, opened up about all the controversy of this year with guest host, and long-time friend, rapper Saucy Santana. The 33-minute long episode opened with a short monologue from Brownlee teasing the information that's about to come, saying “I wanted to tell my truth, my story, on my platform where I feel safe.”
The podcast formally started with the City Girls rapper addressing her mental health — expressing feelings of isolation and a lack of support from people who she expected to have her back amidst all of the controversies with ex-boyfriend Combs.
"So mentally, one minute I’m happy, one minute I’m sad," she said. "One minute, I’m kinda like, ‘Fuck this shit.’ And then the next minute, I’m looking at my kids, like I didn’t bring us this far to go backwards."
Yung Miami on her relationship and split with DiddyAs the podcast continued, Brownlee spoke about how she believed fans took issue with how she portrayed herself in her relationship with Combs, saying that her fans thought she made her City Girls brand more about Combs than the group.
"I never thought I was bigger than the program,” she said. Emphasizing that she was still heavily involved in the group and putting out music with her then-rap partner JT, real name Jatavia Johnson.
Fans also took issue with her silence regarding the slew of allegations against Combs for various sex crimes and drug smuggling. Many fans assumed Brownlee must have known about the crimes but she denied it.
"I can’t speak on these allegations because I wasn’t around at that time," Brownlee stated. "I don’t know that person and that wasn’t my experience."
She went on to say that she did not experience domestic violence at the hand of the denounced rapper and that she does not stand for it, having survived two past relationships where she experienced that.
Finally, Brownlee said she believed that the relationship was mutually beneficial but it was not a relationship solely based on business. While she admitted she had things she wanted to learn from the mogul, they were in love. Brownlee says she stepped back from the relationship because she needed a moment to pour into herself and that she did not want to get caught up in the allegations.
Where do the City Girls stand today?“Shit ain’t all good, but it ain't all bad,” said Brownlee when asked about her relationship with ex-group mate JT.
According to Brownlee, fans only saw a portion of what transpired when the two clashed in an argument on X (formerly Twitter) when Brownlee accused JT of "sneak dissing."
Unsurprisingly, Brownlee hinted at some behind-the-scenes drama. The coastal divide wasn’t the only thing pulling them apart. Brownlee spills that JT was secretly juggling projects she had zero clue about, and the spark that once sizzled between them was starting to fizzle out. You could see it in their studio sessions and interviews— they grew apart.
"I don’t know what was the moment that separated us but I just felt like it because a time when we were getting together it just wasn’t connecting."
Despite the difference in their relationship Brownlee said they will always look at each other as family.
What’s next for Yung Miami? It’s safe to say that the podcast host is back with a mission to expand her brand. Fans should expect a full season of Caresha Please, a reality show, a new card game in the “Resha Roulette” series, and new music.

Not to be dramatic, but my robot vacuum is the best purchase I’ve ever made. With two beagles and a never-ending battle against pet hair, dirt, and dog food lodged into the side of my couch cushions (guess they’re saving those pieces for later), I honestly don’t know how I was getting on before.
