Instagram gets rid of annoying disappearing video 'rug pull'

Sat, 11/09/2024 - 14:36

You open up Instagram on your smartphone and immediately see an intriguing video on your feed. Suddenly, before you can even dive into the clip, the feed refreshes, and the video is gone.

SEE ALSO: Instagram reveals why some videos are lower quality than others

It seems like something like that would be a glitch, right?

Well, apparently Instagram was doing this on purpose. But, it was really annoying users so now they've stopped it.

Instagram depreciates the "rug pull"

In a video posted to his Instagram Stories, Instagram head Adam Mosseri was asked to share a recent change on Instagram that "people may not know about."

Mosseri shared that Instagram removed what was internally known at the company as the "rug pull." Mosseri defined the rug pull as when users open up the Instagram app and see content, but it immediately disappears and gets pushed down the feed as new content is brought in.

View on Threads

Shockingly, Mosseri said that this practice was done on purpose on the Meta-owned app. According to Mosseri, Instagram decided to show this content because it was already loaded in the app and gave users something to see as the app downloaded new content from when the user last opened Instagram on their device.

"It was generally good for engagement," said Mosseri before admitting that it was "really annoying."

So, because it was annoying, Instagram decided to do away with it.

It should be noted that Instagram is far from the only app that does this. I personally have complained about how Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, shows content in the For You feed that immediately disappears shortly after the app is opened on a user's smartphone. Initially, I assumed this was a glitch, much like what I thought was happening on Instagram. But now, it appears that some social media companies are fine with giving their users a lesser experience if it means they get to hit their engagement metrics.

Here's hope this practice ceases across the board on all social media platforms.

OpenAI says over 2 million people consulted ChatGPT for the 2024 election

Sat, 11/09/2024 - 13:12

Now that the 2024 presidential election has come and gone, OpenAI revealed on Friday just how much voters consulted ChatGPT.

SEE ALSO: I asked ChatGPT Search election-based questions — and I have concerns

Ahead of the election, OpenAI took steps to stop the spread of election misinformation on the platform. It banned the use of ChatGPT to impersonate candidates or governments, misrepresent how voting works, or discourage voting. It also digitally watermarked AI images created using DALL-E to make it easier to identify images created using AI.

Additionally, the company partnered with the National Association of Secretaries of State to provide accurate answers and direct users to CanIVote.org, a nonpartisan hub of voting information.

According to a blog post in the month leading up to the election one million ChatGPT responses directed users to CanIVote.org and it rejected over 250,000 requests for deepfakes of President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris, Vice President-elect JD Vance, and Governor Tim Walz. On election day and the day after two million ChatGPT responses encouraged users to look to the Associated Press and Reuters for election results.

Despite the steps taken by OpenAI to stop the spread of election misinformation, the Bipartisan Policy Center still had concerns after asking ChatGPT a variety of voting-related questions. The Bipartisan Policy Center cautioned that is still "important to exercise discretion regarding its applications, especially when there are significant implications on our democracy."

"It is easy to mislead users when solely relying on unconfirmed sources, such as ChatGPT and other chatbots, for answers," the policy center's report continued. "The bot has limitations of prompt length and information training and often does not answer with complete or consistent information. We would caution users to check ChatGPT answers with reliable resources such as government websites or their local election boards."

This was the first presidential election where voters could turn to ChatGPT for election information and per the Bipartisan Policy Center there's room for improvements before the midterms in 2026.

Apple's new iPhone update is locking law enforcement out of phones

Sat, 11/09/2024 - 12:46

Apple made your iPhone more secure and apparently no one really noticed until law enforcement got locked out of devices they had previously or were trying to crack.

Last week, 404 Media reported on a new phenomenon occurring that was freaking out law enforcement. iPhones that were being stored for forensic investigations were "mysteriously" rebooting, making it harder for LEOs to collect evidence from the devices.

Now, a researcher at the Hasso Plattner Institute, Dr.-Ing. Jiska Classen appears to have solved the mystery. Apple quietly rolled out a new feature in iOS 18.1 that reboots a user's iPhone if it has not been unlocked for a certain period of time.

Tweet may have been deleted Inactivity reboot now makes an iPhone more secure

The new feature causing police headaches is called "inactivity reboot." While it may be stifling some police investigations, it's generally good for most users.

The inactivity reboot code basically brings an inactivity timer to users' iPhone devices with iOS 18 and higher installed. The clock on the timer starts after it is unlocked or when a user first unlocks their iPhone since it has been turned on.

After four days of a device being unused and locked, inactivity reboot kicks in and reboots the iPhone. The reboot brings the iPhone into a "Before First Unlock" state, which makes it much harder for third parties like bad actors or law enforcement to then access with forensic or cracking tools.

One cryptographer explained to 404 Media that the practical reason for this feature is to deter thieves from stealing iPhones, cracking the devices, and then reselling them or using your private data for nefarious purposes. However, it does appear that law enforcement officials are being affected by the change and are now spreading the word to others in the field about how to deal with it.

Regardless, though, it is good that Apple continues to make updates and changes to further protect the security and privacy of its users.
