How to date anonymously in 2026: Our guide to Pures privacy tools

Mashable - 7 hours 5 min ago

Online privacy is getting harder and harder to come by, and that's perhaps especially true in the world of online dating. Whether apps are collecting your data to feed you personalized ads or carelessly handling your personal information, resulting in damaging leaks, the end result is the same: less privacy for you.

If you want to date or hook up anonymously in 2026, there's one app that stands above the competition: Pure. It gives its users greater peace of mind and much more control over what personal information they share, both with the app and with other users.

Opens in a new window Credit: Pure Pure   Learn More

Here are five key features that make Pure the standout option for anonymous dating in 2026:

Minimal account creation requirements

The first hurdle to anonymity in online dating comes long before you've ever swiped on a profile or talked to a match. Account creation often asks a great deal from would-be users, from phone numbers and email addresses to birthdays and education history, but even when that data isn't public-facing, the mere fact that it exists on a server somewhere means you're vulnerable to a data leak.

Pure takes a minimalist approach to account creation, allowing you to sign up with minimal information about yourself (age and sexual orientation, plus turn-ons/kinks), or expedite the process by signing in with a Google, Facebook, or Apple account.

Dating ads rather than profiles

Another major innovation of Pure, setting it apart from its competitors, is its eschewal of traditional dating profiles. Instead of having a permanent, public-facing dating profile with the usual information and photos, users post "ads" that disappear after a set amount of time. If someone clicks your ad, they get temporary viewing access to your profile, which may include photos but doesn't require them.

In other words, you can curate what people see, and when they can see it, so nobody has 24/7 access to your photos or profile details. While this isn't particularly useful on a normal dating app, it makes a ton of sense on a hookup app, where you may be in the mood for some short-term fun late on a Friday night but not in the middle of the day on a Tuesday.

From a privacy perspective, the ads are also very customizable. For example, you can choose to share your age in the ad, or choose not to, just as you can choose to share your location (and therefore your distance from potential matches) or choose not to. You can include a photo if you like, but photos are optional, and if you spend any amount of time using the app, you'll discover all kinds of novel ways people use anonymous photos to convey their hookup interests, from suggestive foot pictures to darkened silhouettes of bodies or faces.

Self-deleting chat logs

Pure's banner feature is its self-deleting chat history. By default, every communication on the app is set to self-delete after 24 hours, which not only erases any evidence of the conversation but also encourages people to actually meet up in person. From a hookup perspective, Pure incentivizes real-world meetups rather than never-ending online back-and-forth.

There's a catch, though: if both parties agree to pause the timer, the self-deleting function can be turned off, so if you do happen to find a spark with someone and don't want it to be short-lived, Pure allows you to extend the conversation and save its history, provided you both agree to it.

You can also manually delete the chat history, either by leaving the chat (Pure will automatically erase the logs), blocking the person you were talking to or choosing the "Clear history" option in the chat menu, which not only deletes the chat log from your end but from your partner's end as well. You should also know that, once a chat history has been deleted from your phone, it is also deleted from Pure's servers, so it's gone for good.

Screenshot blocking

Because Pure is a hookup app, it's pretty common for users to exchange personal photos, often suggestive or nude ones, but even here, Pure has upped the safety factor by incorporating screenshot blocking and notifications. Per their FAQ: "Photos, videos and chats cannot be copied, saved or screenshotted. You will receive a notification that the chat partner tried to take a screenshot."

For technical reasons, though, it should be noted that it's still possible for another person to capture a screenshot of anything you send them using third-party software or a separate camera, so you still have to be careful about what you choose to share and who you choose to share it with, but Pure goes farther than most dating apps by not only actively discouraging the practice of screenshotting but making it a bannable offense ("We will block your account forever").

Taking things even further, Pure allows users to send self-destructing photos and videos, so you can tease or titillate with greater peace of mind.

Incognito mode

If you're really privacy-conscious, you can also opt to browse Pure in Incognito mode, which makes it impossible for other users to know when you're online and even disables read receipts, so you can read chat messages from other users without them knowing you have read them.

There are two catches, though: Incognito mode is available only to paying users, and you're allowed up to 24 hours of incognito browsing at a time, so you do have to budget this time carefully.

How to protect yourself from falling for a deepfake

Mashable - 7 hours 5 min ago

Mitch McConnell's hospital jeans were real. But the image of a crying Nekima Levy Armstrong, an ICE protestor held up as a symbol of "far-left agitators" by the Trump administration, was faked.

President Trump's recent outing with Mike Tyson was legitimate. The viral photo of an adulterous Georgia city mayor was not.

In the grand scheme of things, it has never been easy to detect AI-generated content. But it used to have its tells: a few extra fingers, or a strange texture, or an uncanny gaze.

Now, "those tells are mostly gone, and whatever replaces them will be gone in a year too," said Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at online security company NordVPN. "Any guide built on visual artifacts has a short shelf life."

The risk of spreading misinformation is not the only reason for questioning what you see and hear online. Digital scams, including deepfakes, led to losses of over $148 billion in 2025, an increase of more than 25 percent from the year before.

So if the visual Turing Test isn't the failsafe against fraud, scams, and manipulation we once thought it was, what do we do? We focus on the human things we can vet: Our emotions, our brains, and the digital tools available to us.

Deepfake or real? Check the source, not the content.

Instead of trying to spot AI mistakes, users are now encouraged by cybersecurity experts to verify sources rather than content.

When it comes to video, don't hunt for glitches, which are being patched out of generative models fast, explains Roei Sherman, senior director of research at cloud security firm Mitiga. "Every detection tip we publish eventually becomes a line in someone's prompt."

Instead, try to find the larger context from which it originates. If you see a clip of a political candidate making rounds, look for the full speech or interview. Find broader news coverage of the event, from multiple outlets.

"Short clips cut out of context are where most of the manipulation lives," Sherman said.

Sourcing images may be trickier without robust authentication systems in place. While a reverse image search on Google can still prove helpful, the search engine's new AI features may churn out their own misinformation or reaffirm the original hoax, explained Sofia Rubinson, senior editor at misinformation watchdog NewsGuard.

"Fact-checkers used to depend on traditional search platforms like Google to help research the origins of photos and videos," she told Mashable, "but at NewsGuard we’ve found that the AI-powered Google Search often misattributes imagery as depicting what misinformers claim."

And now there's a chance that the source you trace an image or video to looks completely legit, even if it's not.

When evaluating the source itself, Briedis recommends asking questions such as:

  • Has this account existed for more than a month?

  • Does this information appear anywhere else, from anyone with a familiar, credible name attached?

  • Is this person asking me to act right now, and, if so, why?

"None of that requires you to analyze a pixel or a waveform," he explained. "That is exactly why it still works."

Is it an AI hoax? Think logically.

Go with your gut, experts told Mashable.

Always consider plausibility. How likely is it that this could happen? If it's an account that appears to be owned by a public figure, would this person likely say such a thing on a public platform?

Rubinson emphasizes the importance of seeing multiple angles of an event or crisis before deciding it's legitimate. "Keep an eye out for corroborating information," she urges.

And the logic test doesn't just apply to fantastically novel events, like those bunnies hopping on a trampoline. A lot of social media is fake, said Rubinson, and incendiary comments from politicians or controversial actions from celebrities deserve to be double-checked — even if a lot of them turn out to be true.

Am I being ragebaited? Monitor your reaction.

It's also essential that you remain aware of how the image or video makes you feel, Sherman says.

If you have a visceral response to a post — maybe it enrages you or stirs a sense of desperation to engage — it may be doing that on purpose.

"If you see one wild video appearing repeatedly in your feed that seems designed to evoke an emotional response, there’s reason to be suspicious," Rubinson said.

Can I use detection tools? Yes, but with caution.

So you've taken a good look at the post itself, checked its sources, and still aren't sure? Turn to the professionals.

Keep up with organizations tracking viral deepfakes. Newsguard, for example, publishes an AI monitor and a newsletter on trending deepfakes and misinformation. Cybersecurity company McAfee flags popular AI-powered scams on its AI news blog. Deepfake detector company AI or Not maintains a searchable database of known deepfakes and manipulated images.

As federal oversight lags, state-level regulation and industry-wide content provenance measures are also aiding the battle against deepfakes. And cybersecurity experts are building increasingly robust countermeasures to combat deepfakes, including advancements to AI deepfake detectors.

But no detection tool is reliable enough to issue a definitive verdict on whether or not something is AI. If you're still not certain an image is real, don't share it, experts urged.

"What [detection tools] are good for is the moment something feels off," Briedis said. "The tool agrees with you, and now you go and verify it properly."

The iPhone Duo launched last week, and naturally, there was a lot of fuss made about Apple's first-ever foldable. Not all of the chatter was positive, but the iPhone Duo did dominate the conversation at least. Now that the dust has settled, something truly wonderful has happened for Apple fans.

No, we're not talking about resolutions to any of the issues surrounding the launch. We're talking about the triumphant return of T-Mobile's free iPhone deals. For the last few weeks, T-Mobile pulled back on the free deals for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro. Times were tough, but we made it through.

For a limited time, you can get your hands on the Apple iPhone 18 Pro for free with T-Mobile. To qualify for this deal, you simply need to switch to T-Mobile and bring your number to the Experience Beyond plan. Alternatively, you can save $1,200 on the Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max by doing the same.

The full savings are distributed as monthly credits over a 36-month payment plan. If you leave T-Mobile before the end of the three-year contract, you will be charged the remaining balance. You also need to pay local sales tax on the phone's full retail value upfront, plus a standard $35 device connection fee per line at checkout.

You're making a commitment to T-Mobile and getting a flagship phone for free in return. That sounds like a pretty good deal to us.

The Wisconsin Badgers are looking to make it two wins in two games after turning over USC last week and entering the rankings at 25 — their first time on the AP rankings so far this season. They now face the Iowa Hawkeyes.

At 5-2, they're on equal pegging with the Hawkeyes' win-loss record, but the Badgers have fared better in conference play. A win for Iowa could see them start to climb the ranks of the Big 10 and keep any playoff hopes alive. Whatever happens, this should be a tough Week 9 game from two similarly matched teams.

Amazon has cut $50 off the DJI Mini 3 drone this weekend — shop for $369

Save $50: The DJI Mini 3 drone is down to $369 at Amazon. It's usually priced at $419, giving you a saving of $50.

$419 Save $50   Get Deal at Amazon

We can't help but get excited for deals at this time of year. Black Friday is just around the corner, and retailers jump on the excitement by dropping prices earlier and earlier every holiday shopping season. If you're specifically in the market for a deal on a drone, we've spotted an excellent price drop on one of the most popular drones around, the DJI Mini 3.

We can understand why you might be looking for a discount on a DJI drone. Following changes in U.S. law last year, there's a ban on future imports of the Chinese-made DJI drones. We fully expect prices to skyrocket as the existing U.S. stocks of these drones become increasingly scarce.

As of Oct. 31, the DJI Mini 3 drone is down to $369 on Amazon, saving you $50 off the regular list price of $419.

The DJI Mini 3 is lots of fun to fly, which is the bare minimum you want from a drone. It takes off from the palm of your hand and boasts a GPS-enabled auto-return function.

But we also recommend it for content creators and aerial photographers. It shoots 4K footage and boasts a selection of creative QuickShots features, including True Vertical, Helix, and Boomerang shots. It also offers one-tap editing, letting you edit your footage right there and then.

Don't miss your chance to save $50 on the DJI Mini 3 drone at Amazon.

Hurdle hints and answers for October 31, 2026

Mashable - 12 hours 5 min ago

If you like playing daily word games like Wordle, then Hurdle is a great game to add to your routine.

There are five rounds to the game. The first round sees you trying to guess the word, with correct, misplaced, and incorrect letters shown in each guess. If you guess the correct answer, it'll take you to the next hurdle, providing the answer to the last hurdle as your first guess. This can give you several clues or none, depending on the words. For the final hurdle, every correct answer from previous hurdles is shown, with correct and misplaced letters clearly shown.

An important note is that the number of times a letter is highlighted from previous guesses does necessarily indicate the number of times that letter appears in the final hurdle.

The Moon is still looking fairly full in the night sky, but we're now in the Waning Gibbous phase, when the illuminated portion starts to decrease night by night.

What is today's Moon phase?

As of Saturday, Oct. 31, NASA's Daily Moon Guide tracker tells us the Moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase, with 68% of its surface visible.

Tonight, without the use of visual aids you should be able to spot the Tycho Crater, Copernicus Crater, and the Mare Imbrium. Binoculars will also help you see the Alphonsus Crater, the Clavius Crater, and the Apennine Mountains. And, if you have access to a telescope, you'll also see the Apollo 16 landing spot, the Schiller Crater, and the Rima Ariadaeus.

When is the next Full Moon?

The next Full Moon will take place on November 24.

What are Moon phases?

The Moon takes approximately 29.5 days to complete an orbit around Earth, going through a series of phases along the way. Depending on its position relative to Earth and the Sun, the amount of its illuminated surface we can see changes, creating the familiar sequence of crescents, quarter moons and the Full Moon. Once the cycle is complete, the pattern repeats, as explained by NASA.

The eight phases are:

New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it's not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

NYT Strands hints, answers for October 31, 2026

Mashable - Fri, 10/30/2026 - 22:00

Today's NYT Strands hints will be easy if you celebrate Halloween.

Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game, requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

By providing an opaque hint and not providing the word list, Strands creates a brain-teasing game that takes a little longer to play than its other games, like Wordle and Connections.

If you're feeling stuck or just don't have 10 or more minutes to figure out today's puzzle, we've got all the NYT Strands hints for today's puzzle you need to progress at your preferred pace.
