How to self-verify on Bluesky

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 12:10

Want to get verified on Bluesky and add that sweet, sweet checkmark to your account? Well, you might have to wait for that, but there's a workaround until applications open.

In April 2025, the social media platform added a way to verify authentic accounts and demonstrate it through blue ticks on profiles. It's a feature Twitter used to have before Elon Musk came along and made the blue checks buyable.

SEE ALSO: Bluesky adds blue checks for verification, like the Twitter of old

So, can you get verified on Bluesky? Well, we have some bad news — it might not happen for you yet. According to a Bluesky blog post, "During this initial phase, Bluesky is not accepting direct applications for verification. As this feature stabilizes, we’ll launch a request form for notable and authentic accounts interested in becoming verified or becoming trusted verifiers."

Bluesky did say the company "will proactively verify authentic and notable accounts and display a blue check next to their names," so that part is kind of out of users' hands for now.

There is, however, some good news. You can try "self-verifying" on Bluesky if you have your own domain name (that's your own website). Bluesky launched this feature in 2023 as a first step. So, if you have a website of your own, give these steps a try.

How to self-verify on Bluesky Total Time
  • 5 min
What You Need
  • Bluesky account
  • domain name

Step 1: Open Bluesky on desktop or mobile app.

Step 2: Set your website as your username.

OK, this will be tricky for n00bs like me, but we're in this together. All Bluesky usernames end with "bsky.social" but you're going to want to change your handle to your website (you will need a domain you own and manage for this). Open the left side menu of Bluesky, then tap "Settings." Then tap "Account" and then "Handle". Then, select "I have my own domain" and drop the website you want to use in the box.

Credit: Mashable screenshot

Step 3: Add the DNS record to your domain.

Bluesky will generate a DNS (Domain Name System) record for you, which you need to copy and add to your own domain. These steps might change depending on which platform you use. If you use Squarespace (which I do), go to "Dashboard" on there then click "Domains," then select the domain you want to use. On the left side menu of Squarespace, click "DNS" and then scroll down to the "Add record" box on the right. Copy and paste the info Bluesky generated for you into each box then hit "Save."

Credit: Mashable screenshot

Step 4: Go back to Bluesky and click "Verify DNS record."

If everything's good to go, you'll get a "Domain verified" message onscreen.

Step 5: Click the button that reads "update to".

If everything worked, you should see a successful message saying your handle has been updated. Bluesky says on its blog that "DNS propagation might take some time," so be patient your new website handle doesn't appear straight away.

None of this means you're guaranteed a blue check on Bluesky, as the company itself is in charge of "verify[ing] authentic and notable accounts." But it's a first step before Bluesky opens applications down the track, and it's a good idea in the meantime.

If you want a more detailed guide on all of the above, Bluesky has a more technical breakdown.

Bluesky also lets some organizations act as "Trusted Verifiers" that can directly issue blue checks to their employees.

"For example, the New York Times can now issue blue checks to its journalists directly in the app. Bluesky’s moderation team reviews each verification to ensure authenticity," Bluesky's blog post reads.

The accounts allowed to do this are identifiable by scalloped blue checks, and when you tap on a verified account's blue check, you'll be able to see who approved it.

If you've been verified in either circumstance (lucky duck), and you don't want your blue check to appear, you can always switch it off. Just go to Settings, then tap Moderation, then Verification Settings, where you can toggle it off.

Viral AI video You Are What You Eat is pure mukbang nightmare fuel

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 12:08

What's the opposite of ASMR? We might have found it.

On the Reddit /aivideo subreddit, a video titled "You Are What You Eat" is going viral, and we can't look away. The AI-generated video depicts people made of food eating said food, i.e., a sushi man eating a sushi roll, or a man made of yogurt chomping down on a yogurt bowl.

The exact video going viral on Reddit is also worth watching in its entirety, though you may find it deeply unsettling:

You Are What You Eat 3
byu/ZashManson inaivideo

The video is a compilation of clips from abstract visual artist Bennett Waisbren, who shares his creations on Instagram and YouTube. Waisbren told Mashable in an email that the nightmare-inducing videos are inspired by mukbang videos.

"The series grew out of my fascination with viral mukbang culture and ASMR. I love pairing hyper-real visuals with rich sound design, so blending the two felt natural," Waisbren said.

AI video tools like Sora from OpenAI and Character.AI are getting more sophisticated, but the use of artificial intelligence in the arts remains highly controversial.

"These pieces darkly riff on the adage 'you are what you eat,' adding a visceral, almost body-horror twist that spotlights the modern pull of gluttony. My goal is to create visuals that hit instantly and force viewers to confront their own complicated relationship with food," Waisbren said.

You can find additional "You Are What You Eat" videos on YouTube, though turn the sound on at your own risk.

Amazon says new Vulcan warehouse robot has human touch but wont replace humans

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 11:30

This week Amazon debuted a new warehouse robot that has a sense of "touch," but the company also promised its new bot will not replace human warehouse workers.

On Monday, at Amazon's Delivering the Future event in Dortmund, Germany, the retail giant introduced the world to Vulcan, a robot designed to sort, pick up, and place objects in storage compartments with the finesse and dexterity of human hands.

SEE ALSO: AI-powered robot dog is learning to 'live' like a human

But Vulcan "hands" don't look human. Instead, the robot's "end of arm tooling" looks like a "ruler stuck onto a hair straightener," as Amazon describes it. The Vulcan warehouse robot is also loaded with cameras and feedback sensors to process when it makes contact with items and how much force to apply to prevent damage.

In its warehouses, Amazon's inventory is stored in soft fabric compartments of about one square foot in size. Each compartment can hold an average of up to 10 items. Vulcan's ruler can move items around in the compartments to make more space. The hair straightener paddles hold the item, while a conveyer belt on the paddle pushes the item into the compartment. For picking up items, Vulcan has a suction cup.

According to Amazon, Vulcan can handle 75 percent of the items in Amazon warehouses and has already been deployed at fulfillment centers in Spokane, Washington and Hamburg, Germany.

With its sophisticated capabilities, the big question is whether Vulcan will replace human workers. "I don’t believe in 100% automation," Aaron Parness, who leads the Amazon Robotics team, told CNBC. "If we had to get Vulcan to do 100% of the stows and picks, it would never happen. You would wait your entire life. Amazon understands this." Instead, the idea is for Vulcan to take on the higher compartments that would normally require workers to use a step ladder.

The announcement also highlighted "new categories of jobs at Amazon, from robotic floor monitors to on-site reliability maintenance engineers." It also mentioned upskilling programs for employees who want to gain more high-tech experience.

That said, as the number of robots deployed in Amazon fulfillment centers has increased, the number of employees has decreased. According to a 2024 report from Benzinga, the number of Amazon employees decreased by 100,000, while over 750,000 robots have been deployed, up from 520,000 in 2022.

If that's a dealbreaker for you, the Kindle Colorsoft is your only option for color. After all, highlighting paragraphs just doesn't hit the same in gray. On top of that, it also features auto-adjusting light, 32GB of storage, a waterproof build, wireless charging, and eight weeks of battery life. And did we mention there's no lockscreen ads? While personally they're not a huge deal for me on my basic Kindle, the ads may be unpleasant for some. With the Colorsoft, you don't even have to worry about them.

It's not every day that Kindle devices go on sale. If you're in the market for one, we suggest snatching up the savings while you can.

Honey Dont! trailer teases Margaret Qualley click-clacking into a crime caper

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 11:00

Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke are back with their follow-up to Drive-Away Dolls and judging by the trailer, we're in for quite a crime caper in click-clacking heels.

Honey Don't sees private investigator Honey O’Donahue (Margaret Qualley, The Substance) digging into what looks like a car accident but could be a more sinister death. It's a solid cast for this one, with Aubrey Plaza also starring as a local cop, Charlie Day as a local detective, and Chris Evans as a flashy preacher with more than a few secrets.

It's the kind of summer movie we dream of.

Honey Don't opens in theaters Aug. 22.

Dangerous Animals opens in theaters on June 6.

The Long Walk trailer brings Stephen Kings brutal dystopian novella to life

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 11:00

Stephen King fans have been waiting a long time for this one. Although it wasn't the first book he had published, the horror master started his novella The Long Walk when he was back in high school. Now, almost 60 years later, it's finally coming to the big screen.

The trailer above teases the brilliant and painful premise: A group of teenage boys enter a dystopian race controlled by the military, where you have to keep walking above a certain speed or face death if you drop below it. The race only stops when there's one person left standing.

Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Ben Wang, Charlie Plummer, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill star.

The Long Walk is in theatres from Sept. 12.

Apple launches Shazam Viral Charts to track those overnight blowout hits

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 11:00

When Rihanna launches a new album, it's fairly easy to guess that it's going to appear on the top music charts. But what about those hits which seem just happen to go viral overnight, like Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" hitting the charts 37 years after its release thanks to Stranger Things?

Well, there's a new way to track those. On Wednesday, Apple launched Shazam Viral Charts, using its music discovery platform to offer an overview of what's going viral right now.

SEE ALSO: Spotify's iPhone app now lets you choose how you want to pay

According to Apple, the charts do more than tracking social hits. "They capture the full spectrum of how songs are catapulted into the spotlight, including cultural moments from traditional media, on-demand streaming, and tentpole events," the company wrote in a press release.

Another example of how this happens is Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing" reaching No. 4. on the U.S. chart after being featured on The White Lotus Season 3 finale.

Apple didn't share much about the algorithms that populate these charts, beyond saying that the aim is to capture the fastest-moving songs right now.

It's not just one chart, either: A global chart tracks the top 50 viral hits globally, and the 42 national charts rank 25 top songs.

The charts, which are updated daily, are available on Apple Music and Shazam.

But aesthetic isn't the only major change; the Galaxy Buds3 Pro are Samsung's smartest and fanciest earbuds yet. And you can snag a pair for under $200.

As of May 7, the Galaxy Buds3 Pro are down to just $189.99 at Amazon. That's $60, or 24%, off their retail price of $249.99. That's a $10 price drop over the last week and just a dollar shy of their best price ever.

Our friends at PCMag (also owned by Ziff Davis) praised the "nuanced sound quality with exceptional clarity."

For the first time, the Galaxy Buds3 Pro also lean heavily into AI (shocking, I know). Their adaptive noise cancellation feature can filter out distractions when it's time to focus, or let in ambient sounds and voices when you need to stay in touch with your surroundings. Meanwhile, the adaptive equalizer feature auto-adjusts your audio in real time based on your fit. The real standout is its interpreter feature, though. Users can get real-time translations of a foreign language they're hearing in Listening Mode, whether it's during a phone call, a TV show, or an IRL conversation. Of course, you'll need a Samsung Galaxy phone to unlock this feature.

Our PCMag pals summed it up best: "For Samsung users, the Galaxy Buds3 Pro are a worthy option with top-notch audio, unique AI features, and classy looks." And for under $200? They're quite the steal.

Keeping the floors clean is a never-ending task. You've cleaned up the flour that dusted the floor during this afternoon's baking session, but now there's the dog hair on the couch — and who knows how much dust is under that couch. Instead of constantly worrying about floor cleanliness, offload the chore to a smart robot vacuum that comes with major mopping abilities. As an extra perk, it's on a super sale today.

As of May 7, the Mova P10 Pro Ultra robot vacuum and mop is on sale at Amazon for $499, marked down from the normal price of $1,099. That's a 55% discount that shaves $600 off the price, making this the lowest price we've ever seen at Amazon.

We'll start with one of the major highlights that comes with the Mova P10 Ultra Plus: It not only mops, but it dries the mopping pads with heat. Not all robot vacuum combos dry the mopping pads, leaving you to get in there, remove them, and dry them separately. Not only does the Mova do this on its own, but it uses heat for drying, so there's a lot less chance you'll end up with a stinky mop on your hands. The water tanks on the robot's base can effectively mop 4,300 square feet before the water will need replacing.

The Mova's 13,000Pa suction power is also noteworthy, which could be great for pet owners. The 5,200mAh battery means this robot vacuum combo can clean for up to 2.5 hours nonstop before it'll need to head back to base for a recharge.

Mashable - Wed, 05/07/2025 - 10:32

It's official: Real IDs are required to fly in the United States (well, kind of).

Following two decades of bureaucratic groundwork since the proposal for federally validated licenses passed, the enhanced license is now an official part of the security process for domestic travel and entry into certain federal facilities. Marked by a small star in the corner of the document, the identification standards are overseen by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and enforced by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA).

Individuals flocked to renew their licenses over the last few months, creating increased demand at local DMVs and heightened confusion around travel throughout the country, amid an already tense travel environment. On Tuesday, DHS and TSA representatives clarified they would still accept travelers without Real IDs, but with additional (read: lengthy) security protocols for those with other accepted identification.

So, for the many Americans who have yet to procure their enhanced licenses: You still have a bit of time.

How to find your state's Real ID requirements

The Real ID application process (and required documents) vary by state. Federal agencies recommend individuals visit the DMV or licensing authority for their state of residency to get the specifics — fortunately, the DHS has made that a little easier.

Scroll down to the bottom of the department's Real ID readiness hub and you'll find an interactive map of U.S. states and territories, automatically linking to the region's relevant office. The website also walks individuals through whether or not their current travel plans are "Real ID ready" and answers Frequently Asked Questions.

Each state will require, at the minimum, documentation that verifies your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security Number, and two proofs of residence, as well as validation of lawful status to reside in the U.S. Get those in order ASAP. Beyond this, each state will have different additional document or process requirements, such as the ability to complete an application online (California) or have your documents pre-screened before the DMV (New York).
