The TikTok ban is approaching and seems more likely as each day passes. In case you didn't know, the Supreme Court is currently considering the constitutionality of a law that would ban the app for all users in the U.S. on Sunday, Jan. 19.
The app won't be immediately removed from everyone's phones. Still, users will likely see a pop-up message that will take them to a website with information about the ban — making the app pretty much useless for people in the U.S. If the ban goes into effect, you reportedly won't be able to post, message, or save videos if the ban goes into effect. You won't be able to update or redownload TikTok.

Some creators are encouraging their fans to follow them on other platforms like Instagram and YouTube, while others are starting anew on apps like Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote.
Here are some of the alternatives users are flocking to.
Xiaohongshu, aka RedNote or 'Little Red Book'As of today, Jan. 15, RedNote is one of the top apps on the Apple App Store, and it's clear why — some creators are begging their followers to move to the other Chinese app. It's a short-form video platform like TikTok, but the layout resembles that of Pinterest and Instagram. And, unlike many other alternatives, it's also owned by China, albeit a different Chinese company. But just because it isn't TikTok doesn't mean it won't be hit with some of the same complaints that got TikTok into trouble with the U.S. government. Plus, cybersecurity experts worry about privacy risks.

"The platform collects extensive personal data, including location, browsing activity, and device-specific information like IP addresses. It can also share this data with third-party service providers or government authorities, raising concerns about user privacy.
"A major red flag is the app’s lack of transparency — its terms and conditions are mainly in Mandarin, leaving non-Chinese-speaking users unclear about what data is collected and how it’s used. This makes it difficult for users to make informed decisions about their privacy."
Lemon8TikTok really wants people to move from its app to its other app, Lemon8. TikTok has ads all over to join its sister app, which functions much like Instagram. The app is heavy on lifestyle content and looks a lot like Pinterest married Instagram to create one massive platform for productivity content and aesthetics. Still, as more users flock to the app, it will likely see a shift in content.
Meta platforms like Instagram and FacebookSome TikTok creators already have robust platforms on Instagram, so it might be easiest to find them on the Meta-owned social media site.
At the same time, Meta just spent the past few weeks demolishing protections, guidelines, and rules that made some content creators feel safe and comfortable. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the removal of fact-checkers in favour of Community Notes, lifted hate speech prohibitions, nixed the company DEI initiatives, removed tampons from men's bathrooms in Meta offices, and deleted trans and nonbinary themes on its Messenger app, among other bizarre and hateful changes. In turn, some are leaving those platforms altogether.

Much like TikTok, YouTube Shorts can go up to three minutes long, and if you have the app on your phone, it's pretty easy to get similarly addicted to scrolling — just ask my dad. That said, it still doesn't have TikTok's addictive algorithm.
ClapperClapper is similar to TikTok. It's a short-form video app that has seen an uptick in downloads since Congress began debating banning TikTok. However, it doesn't have the same youthful appeal as TikTok and other alternatives, which might be on purpose — it is strategically appealing to Gen X and Gen Y users, according to Deadline.
"TikTok is targeting more of the younger generation, especially below 25. I saw a possibility of a more mature user base," its founder, Edison Chen, told Deadline. "They also want to enjoy the short-video format, but a majority of the social media platforms are targeting the younger generations."

The MCU's Winter Soldier wore realistic prosthetics for the beginning of A Different Man to play Edward, who feels held back by his facial differences. When the aforementioned procedure makes him look like — well — a movie star, he has a new lease on life, embracing a new identity. That is, until his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a play inspired by his former self. Eager to reconnect with the playwright he once crushed on, Edward auditions for the role of himself — without revealing who he really is. But the arrival of the charismatic Oswald (Chained for Life star Adam Pearson) threatens his plans of artistic triumph and romantic bliss.

5. Red RoomsThe internet can be a dark and twisted place. Red Rooms explores these treacherous corners with impressive restraint. This French-Canadian psychological thriller delves into deeply troubling territory, centering on the trial of an alleged serial killer who broadcast his torture and murder of three teen girls online. However, writer/director Pascal Plante keeps the grisly business offscreen, allowing our imaginations to fill in where the shrieking sound design leaves off.

Fascinated by the case, she attends the public trial in person, then heads to the internet to learn more, turning to cyberstalking, online gambling, and dark web auction sites to uncover what even the police could not. What does she hope to gain? The deeper she descends into this spiral of obsession, the more unnerving Red Rooms becomes, urging audiences to reconsider their own unhealthy online fixations.

Back in ActionAfter a decade away from acting, Cameron Diaz is back in action, opposite a dynamic Jamie Foxx in a winsome espionage comedy fit for the whole family. However, director Seth Gordon brings so much verve to this movie, it's a shame we'll never have the chance to see it in theaters.
Diaz and Foxx play a couple who met when they were both globe-trekking spies at the top of their game. 15 years after they faked their deaths (and made off with a powerful device), they're middle-aged parents whose teen son and daughter think they're boring. Well, when the whole family gets pulled into a rousing adventure, these kiddos will see who their parents really are, and what they're made of. Fun in a wonderfully throwback '90s way, Back in Action is a great pick for a movie night in.

3. QueerCelebrated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has bestowed upon cinema an audacious array of tales of lust and love, gnarly and magnificent. There was the tender summer love story of Call Me by Your Name, the cannibal coming-of-age adventure Bones and All, and the high-tension love triangle of Challengers. Then came Queer, Guadagnino's daring adaptation of William S. Burroughs' semi-autobiographical novella.

Along the way, he becomes intoxicated with a dashing young Navy man (Drew Starkey), sparking a relationship that's as confounding as it is white-hot. Less adored than Guadagnino's previous films, Queer nonetheless awed some critics. In my review for Mashable, I waded through my qualms with the film, but ultimately cheered, "Queer is both visually lush, sexually explosive, and emotionally infuriating. It is not a journey that leaves our hearts full, but open and aching."

2. A Real PainWritten, directed by, and starring Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain follows an odd couple of cousins on a trip to Poland, where they hope to reconnect to their late grandmother's roots and their Jewish heritage. Where David (Jesse Eisenberg) is tightly wound and repressed, Benji (Kieran Culkin) is a charmingly chaotic chatterbox, who's quick with a hug, a witticism, and an out-of-pocket revelation.
The clever title A Real Pain plays on both the grief these cousins grapple with over the loss of their grandmother, and their decaying bond. It's also a cheeky way to allude to brash Benji. "Despite its title, A Real Pain is genuinely funny," Monica Castillo cheered in her review for Mashable, celebrating Culkin's incredible performance. "It's a level of unpredictability that can be funny yet sincere, and Culkin threads the needle between emotions with surprising acuity."

SAVE UP TO $1,000: LG dropped new versions of its flagship OLED and QNED TVs at CES, and as of Jan. 16, 2023 and 2024 flagship LG models have gotten discounts at Best Buy for up to $1,500 off.
In case you forgot, LG is the authority on cool screens. From a 5K2K bendable gaming monitor to another portable TV to quite a few regular ol' TVs, the brand's CES 2025 showcase didn't come to play.
New LG OLEDs are brighter and zippier than everLG has completely switched up its whole OLED panel situation for 2025. Its two new flagship OLEDs, the M5 and the G5, will be lit by a "four stack engineering process" rather than the MLA (Micro Lens Array) panels it had been using. You can get into the weeds on that tech elsewhere on Google, here's the short version: It's a new lighting panel featuring a fourth OLED layer, and that means brightness, brightness, brightness.
The LG M5 will likely be the most expensive TV in LG's 2025 OLED lineup, but not 100 percent for the reasons you're thinking. While it will have a lot of LG's best specs for picture quality, it'll be special in another way to gamers: it can wirelessly display the content you're casting to it from a console.

Cost-wise, it'll likely run a bit cheaper than the M5. But that ranking doesn't take away from the fact that it's about to be a beast for gamers and avid movie watchers, packing a lot of premium value into a price that'll likely feel more doable for the average household.
Noteworthy G5 specs include a 165Hz refresh rate (a rarity in a sea of 144Hz TVs), four HDMI 2.1 ports, and Brighter Booster Ultimate mode to make it pop 40 percent more than its predecessor, the G4. LG also says that the G5's peak brightness is three times higher than that of the B5, which was also announced at CES. Unlike the G4 line, the G5 is LG's first flagship OLED that'll come in 48 inches.
The LG C5 and B5 OLEDs were also announced and, as expected, will be LG's more entry-level OLED TVs.
New LG QNEDs *checks notes* ditch quantum dotsLG hasn't yet mastered QNED like it has OLED, but damn, it is trying. LG's 2025 crop of QNED TVs got just as much of an internal makeover as the OLED stacks did: Traditional quantum dots are out, some tech called "Dynamic QNED Color Solution" is in. LG hasn't given much intel into what this means past the fact that it focuses on a wider color gamut, using fluorescent elements to more accurately convert light into purer, more vibrant colors.

That AI simultaneously keeps tabs on each scene's audio, quickly separating background noise from voices and making those voices clearer.
The most premium QNED of the 2025 bunch, the QNED92, also features a mini-LED backlight. The mid-tier and entry-level models, the QNED9M and QNED85, both feature regular LED backlights in tandem with the new color gamut system mentioned above. Oddly enough, it's the mid-tier LG QNED that got outfitted with the Zero Connect box for wireless console transmission.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned Red Dye No. 3, an additive used to colour food bright red, due to it being carcinogenic. Still, if you've been enthusiastically chowing down on Betty Crocker Red Icing or Brach's Candy Corn, there's no need to freak out. You probably haven't eaten enough to cause cancer, and even if you have, you'd also need to be a rat.

The U.S. ban comes in response to a 2022 joint petition by several organisations, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Center for Environmental Health, and the Center for Food Safety.
In a statement on Wednesday, the FDA acknowledged the petitioners' submission of two studies that showed male lab rats develop cancer after being exposed to "high levels" of Red Dye No. 3. However, it noted that this was "due to a rat specific hormonal mechanism," and further that humans aren't typically exposed to as much Red Dye No. 3 as was used in these studies.
"The way that FD&C Red No. 3 causes cancer in male rats does not occur in humans," wrote the FDA. "Studies in other animals and in humans did not show these effects; claims that the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and in ingested drugs puts people at risk are not supported by the available scientific information."
Nevertheless, the FDA has elected to ban Red Dye No. 3 under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act's Delaney Clause. This clause bars chemical food additives from FDA approval if they have been found to induce cancer in humans or animals, and makes no allowances for prodigious quantities or special rat hormones.
If a substance has been shown to cause cancer, even if in a rat, it's understandable to want to avoid it if you can. Food dyes such as erythrosine offer no nutritional value nor do they enhance taste, and can easily be removed from a person's diet without adverse effects. Even so, there's no reason to be alarmed or rush to your doctor if you've been blissfully enjoying foods coloured by Red Dye No. 3 up until now.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest has called this "long-delayed ban" a "win for public health." However, it also noted that knowledge of Red Dye No. 3's carcinogenic properties isn't new, and that the FDA already banned the additive from use in cosmetics and topical drugs 35 years ago in 1990. Red Dye No. 3 has long been banned or restricted as a food additive in other jurisdictions as well, including Australia, New Zealand, and countries in the EU.
California passed a bill banning Red Dye No. 3 in 2023, with it set to take effect from Jan. 1, 2027. However, other states will be able to continue ingesting Red Dye No. 3 for a little while longer. The FDA is giving food manufacturers a two-year grace period to reformulate their products, with Red Dye No. 3 to be removed by Jan. 15, 2027. Drug manufacturers get an extra year to do the same, with a deadline of Jan. 18, 2028. Imported foods are subject to the FDA's new restriction as well, so you can't get your Red Dye No. 3 fix from overseas (if for some reason that was something you wanted to do).
Red Dye No. 3 isn't to be confused with Red Dye No. 40, a more common additive that also gives food a bright red colour and remains approved for human consumption by the FDA. Though there have been studies which question Red Dye No. 40's safety, with some evidence suggesting it may exacerbate hyperactivity in particularly sensitive children, current consensus is that it poses little risk.
