Apple reportedly bringing more AI features to Mail on Macs

Mashable - Mon, 01/20/2025 - 08:22

Apple is reportedly (and finally) set to bring the more buzzy Apple Intelligence features to its Mail app on Mac.

Though Apple's AI has been rolling out tools for iPhone and iPad users with the launch of iOS 18.2, not all Apple Intelligence features have been extended to Macs — though some were included with macOS Sequoia 15.2 launched in December.

Now, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company is set to expand its AI capabilities to the Mail app in macOS 15.4 — that's the April-rumoured software update after macOS 15.3, which is expected to launch in late January, early February.

"The Mac will get the upgraded Mail app that uses AI to prioritize messages and sort content into different inboxes," Gurman wrote in his "Power On" newsletter on Sunday. "Right now, iPad and iPhone users are able to tap into the feature — which is terrific — but Mac customers have been left behind. That changes with macOS 15.4, I’m told."

The most current version of Apple Intelligence lets users do a whole bunch of things in the Mail app including using Writing Tools to draft messages, composing email responses with Smart Reply, receive summaries of lengthy email threads, and more. Some of these were available with macOS Sequoia 15.2, but Gurman's report suggests the tools that prioritise messages and sort emails into inboxes will now be added — yes, Gmail's had that last one for years.

But it's not the only additional (and coveted) Apple Intelligence feature the company is reportedly bringing to Macs, with Gurman writing that Genmoji, Apple's AI-generated emoji, will be arriving soon, as well as the updated, more capable version of Siri.

"For the first time, Apple is bringing its Genmoji custom emoji to the Mac — following their debut on the iPhone and iPad," wrote Gurman. "The company will add more features by April with iOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4. The big addition at that time will be the new Siri digital assistant, which will be able to better tap into personal information and use the App Intents technology to more precisely control apps."

The report comes a day after Apple pulled its AI-generated news summaries feature, following a series of blatantly false headlines.

Trump inauguration time, how to watch live today

Mashable - Mon, 01/20/2025 - 06:34

On Jan. 20, following an embattled first term and tense election year — as well as two impeachments and a felony conviction, a first for any U.S. president — President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office for the second time.

Observers near and far are gearing up for the ceremony with bated breath, as many stand on guard for the President's remarks following his incitement to insurrection on Jan. 6, 2020 — an inflammatory speech that would later win him suspension from several online platforms and an impeachment in the U.S. House. But the President's successful election season may signal a much more calm presidential transition this time around.

The inaugural events will be a relatively smaller schedule of activities than previous years, pulling from a $170 million inauguration committee fund (boosted by some of the incoming leader's biggest tech allies, including Meta's Mark Zuckerberg). Inauguration ball performers will include a country lineup of Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lee Greenwood. The Village People will be performing at events throughout the weekend, and opera singer Christopher Macchio will perform the national anthem during the ceremony.

Confirmed guests include President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, as well as President Bill Clinton and former presidential runner Hillary Clinton. Trump has also invited several international political leaders, which could see an unprecedented turnout of world leaders in the Inauguration ceremony's history. Argentinian President Javier Milei has confirmed his attendance, while Chinese President Xi Jinping will be sending an official envoy, Forbes reports. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has said he is attempting to gain entry into the country to attend the events, as well.

And Trump's tech circle will be front row, including Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and, reportedly, OpenAI's Sam Altman and TikTok CEO Shou Chew.

How to watch the ceremony online

Inaugural events will begin on Saturday, Jan. 18, with the actual swearing-in ceremony taking place at 12 p.m. EST on Monday, Jan. 20.

The ceremony will be broadcasted live on all major networks (ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC and PBS), as well as CSPAN.

For online streaming, viewers can tune into official YouTube livestreams, including ABC, CBS, PBS News Hour, USA TODAY, and Fox News. NBC viewers can catch coverage on NBC News Now, and CNBC will be airing their coverage live on the CNBC homepage.

Viewers can also stream the Inauguration via the live news hubs on their favorite streaming platforms, like ABC for Disney+ and CNN for Max, or directly on the White House website.

When Trump's presidential powers come into play

Many tuning in to Monday's ceremony will be wondering when Trump will be able to execute his executive powers.

Starting from the time of election to inauguration day (about 75 days), the incoming Trump administration will have been beefing up a roster of transition staff and volunteers to aid in a smoother transfer of power, explains the Center for Presidential Transition, a nonpartisan nonprofit. During this time, the President-elect will have also announced his picks for prized appointments.

A post-inauguration "handover" phase then begins, while the new administration enters a 200-day blitz period with the goal of enshrining as many early policy wins as possible. On day one of his presidency, Trump will have the ability to sign executive orders and reverse existing policies, which he has already pledged to do. Experts anticipate the new President tackling tariffs, immigration, and environmental policy almost immediately — some of these priorities, including tariffs and any federal employee rollbacks, will have immediate effects, while others will act more symbolically.

Trump will also immediately gain executive clemency powers, allowing him to pardon and commute the sentences of individuals. Americans can also expect more appointment and staffing announcements in the post-inauguration period.

X and Bluesky are rolling out the same new feed. You can probably guess what it is.

With the future of TikTok still hanging in the balance, other social media companies are scrambling to fill the gaps it may leave in the market.

Instagram recently announced CapCut video editing rival Edits, and now X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky are both rolling out vertical video feeds.

Tweet may have been deleted

"An immersive new home for videos is rolling out to users in the U.S. today," posted X's official account on Sunday.

X's new video feed can be accessed via a play button at the bottom of the screen.

Bluesky, meanwhile, is also hopping on the trend. "We had to get in on the video action too — Bluesky now has custom feeds for video!" the platform wrote in a post. "Like any other feed, you can choose to pin these or not. Bluesky is yours to customize."

"In video custom feeds, you can swipe up to enter a timeline of only video posts," the company added, linking to the custom feed.

So there you have it: Even if TikTok doesn't manage to find a U.S. buyer in time, there will likely be another 50+ vertical video feeds that have popped up in an attempt to plug the gap.
