Skype is dead. Long live Skype.

Microsoft, which has been Skype's parent company since 2011, announced in a company blog post that the 22-year-old video calling app will enter its eternal rest on May 5. From that point on, Microsoft's only official video calling software will be Microsoft Teams. Microsoft is offering a service that will let Skype users log into Teams with their Skype accounts, which should automatically migrate their existing chats from one app to the other. Users can also export all of their Skype data to have for themselves, if they choose.

Younger readers may not remember this, but once upon a time, the word "Skype" was synonymous with video calls, much in the same way "FaceTime" and "Zoom" are today. Founded in 2003, Skype became one of the top video calling apps for years, as it repeatedly became acquired and later sold by various companies until landing with Microsoft in 2011. Since then, the prevalence of FaceTime and Zoom made Skype feel like a thing of the past, even as the software continued to exist and be supported until now.

Skype users have until early May to sort out their affairs. Everyone remember to pour one for a real one this weekend.

The People's Union USA spearheaded the national boycott in what it calls an "economic blackout." The grassroots organization is boycotting companies rolling back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Notably, much of the protest saw huge pushes on social media platforms, including Meta's Instagram, which recently rescinded its DEI initiatives.

These are the rules, according to The People's Union USA's website (it is not very complex):

• Do not make any purchases

• Do not shop online, or in-store

• No Amazon, No Walmart, No Best Buy

• Nowhere!

The blackout encourages people not to spend money on fast food, gas, or any major retailers, and, generally, not to use their credit or debit cards. According to the site, you can shop for necessities, like food, medicine, or emergency supplies. "If you must spend, ONLY support small, local businesses," the site reads. And try to pay in cash where you can.

While it may initially seem impressive, the lack of specific demands and the presence of a planned end date make it challenging to assess whether the boycott was truly successful. Additionally, companies may not feel much financial pressure to participate, as their revenue is likely to rebound within 24 hours. Nonetheless, Brayden King, a professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management who studies boycotts and activism, told TODAY.com that this isn’t a "fruitless effort." He explained, "even if it doesn’t force corporate change, it helps build solidarity for future actions." However, without a clear success strategy, the boycott risks losing momentum.

"If activists want real change, they need to focus on particular targets and have clear concessions they’re asking for," he told the news outlet. "Too many targets dilute attention and make the tactic less effective."

This isn't the end of boycotts for The People's Union USA. A second 24-hour economic blackout is planned for March 28, a third for April 18, and four week-long boycotts of specific companies, including Amazon from March 7 to March 14, Nestlé from March 21 to 28, Walmart from April 7 to April 13, and General Mills from April 21 to April 27.

Other fans have made similar speculations since the episode aired, with Reddit user u/MysteryRawDog arguing that Lumon's main aim appears to be completely severing a person from any negative life experiences.

When Mashable's Belen Edwards spoke to Severance creator Dan Erickson about episode 7, his comments seem to support this theory.

"I will say what's interesting here is that she's going through these painful or unpleasant experiences and then she's leaving, and the question that's being asked throughout the episode by Dr. Mauer (Robby Benson) is, to what degree is anything leaking through?" Erickson said. "Is she walking out of that room with any emotional echo of what she was going through in that room? So far it seems that she's not, so that's the throughline that I think is happening with what's going on in those rooms."

Another big question, however, concerns the final door. What about "Cold Harbor", the room that Gemma has yet to go in, but which shares a name with the file Mark (Adam Scott) is working on?

Well, following on from the idea that each room represents a different form of suffering, one commenter on Reddit speculated that "Cold Harbor" might be related to death.

"I think Cold Harbor will be the death of another, and the miscarriage scene was foreshadowing," they wrote.

It makes sense, doesn't it? The name "Cold Harbor" already evokes the concept of death, and it's also one of the most intense experiences of suffering a person can experience. If Lumon is trying to sever feelings of grief, it seems likely that this would be one of the final negatives life events that they work a test subject like Gemma up to. Mark and Gemma also have their own personal connections to grief — Gemma through the miscarriage, and Mark through the miscarriage and the loss of Gemma. Would this make them the ideal test subjects?

So, why has Bitcoin lost nearly 20 percent of its value since his inauguration?

Cryptocurrency is notorious for its volatility, so sharp declines and surges are not unexpected. However, Bitcoin and the broader crypto market have mostly seen steady growth, with values climbing across the board. In fact, Bitcoin even broke the six-figure mark for the first time following Trump's election.

Here’s why Bitcoin is falling, and how much of it actually ties back to Trump.

$TRUMP actually hurt the crypto space

A few people made a lot of money when Trump randomly launched his $TRUMP memecoin just a few days before his inauguration. The token was technically the most successful memecoin launch ever as $TRUMP surged from basically worthless to around $75. The Trump family and its associates reportedly made $100 million in trading fees, without selling any of their $TRUMP holdings.

However, for most average investors, $TRUMP was a loss. According to the New York Times, more than 810,000 crypto wallets have lost a combined $2 billion so far.

This, combined with other Trump-affiliated meme coin failures, like $MELANIA and the Argentinian President Javier Milei-promoted $LIBRA, has removed billions of dollars from the crypto market.

Other memecoins have undoubtedly been hit the hardest, as crypto speculators pulled their money out of other tokens, invested it in these mainstream ones, and then lost their money. However, you can guarantee that Bitcoin also feels reverberations from this.

Trump's pro-crypto actions underwhelm so far

This is potentially a temporary effect, depending on if Trump pulls through for his crypto backers.

Money from the cryptocurrency lobby helped propel Trump to victory last November. In exchange, the crypto industry expected Trump to end federal government investigations into crypto outfits, ease regulation, and help pass pro-crypto laws.

Trump has delivered on a few things. For example, Trump's SEC dropped its lawsuit against the U.S.'s largest crypto exchange, Coinbase. The president also signed an executive order shortly after his inauguration to broadly promote the use of crypto.

But, other than aiding very specific companies and vaguely promising to do something for the industry at large in the future, Trump hasn't done much else. It's been just over a month since Trump became president again, so he still has plenty of time to deliver for crypto. However, Trump hasn't done enough for the fast-moving industry. With Trump extracting money from the industry for his own personal gain with his meme coin, investors aren't feeling so bullish about Trump and crypto anymore.

The largest crypto heist ever

Roughly $1.5 billion has just been stolen from one of the world's biggest crypto exchanges, Bybit. That's the largest heist ever in crypto and amounts to more than half of all the crypto stolen last year. Hackers and scammers are targeting crypto more than ever, and security incidents like this aren't helping ease investors' concerns.

While Bybit has since made customers whole with the help of loans and large deposits, customers are still fleeing the platform. In just one night, as much as $5.3 billion was withdrawn from the platform. 

With the market uncertain and investors distrusting those overseeing their holdings, crypto investors are withdrawing their money.

Trump's economy

Speaking of market uncertainty, it's not just cryptocurrency. Trump and Elon Musk's mass firing of federal workers, economic policy that changes at Trump's whims by the minute, rising costs of goods, and Trump's constant threat of new tariffs have led to a very shaky economy. The markets are generally down, and despite some in the crypto industry pretending cryptocurrency is immune, crypto very much follows those same trends.

While Trump may deliver on crypto's hopes for less regulation, the real question is whether people will have any money left to invest by the time he gets there. The crypto market will soon find out.

Amelia Dimoldenberg casts aside the Chicken Shop Date setting for something a little more glamorous in the Oscars pre-brunch video above, sitting down with Anora star Mikey Madison to chat about everything from Las Vegas weddings to pole dancing.

The highlight? Their respective attempts at doing American and English accents.

It seems all the preparations Katy Perry made to host the MTV Video Music Awards in 2017 are going to come in handy — this time on an actual trip to space. 

"I’ve been training with @MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson," she said then on Instagram, before donning an iridescent spacesuit and swinging on wires over the stage. 

Now she'll be boarding Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket, along with a few other celebrity and high-profile crewmates: CBS Mornings' Gayle King and Jeff Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sánchez, who founded Black Ops Aviation, an aerial film and production company. 

The so-called NS-31 mission — which doesn't have a launch date but is expected to happen this spring — will be the 11th carrying passengers for the company. The spaceflight will travel more than 60 miles up in the sky to kiss the Kármán line, where Earth's atmosphere and outer space meet.

Perry and the all-female crew will count themselves among the United States' latest civilian astronauts. To date, Blue Origin has taken 52 people to the space boundary. 

Rounding out the crew will be former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics scientist and social activist Amanda Nguyen, fashion-designer-turned-film-producer Kerianne Flynn, and Sánchez, who captured a lot of attention in January when she accompanied Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, at President Donald Trump's inauguration. 

"If someone would have told me that I would be able to go to space one day," Sánchez said in an Instagram reel, "I would have definitely, well, I don't know, laughed. I can't believe it's happening."

King, aka Oprah's bestie, is equally gobsmacked. When CBS announced her upcoming crew assignment, the network released a video with a montage of the morning host, including a clip of her talking to correspondent Mark Strassman at a prior launch. 

"Gayle, sooner or later, we're going to get you up there," he said. 

"Mark's got jokes this morning," King said.

It's unclear how much training the women will receive before the launch from Van Horn, Texas, or how much their seats cost. Neither Blue Origin nor CBS spokespeople responded to questions from Mashable. 

In 2021, the company auctioned off the first ticket for New Shepard and donated the earnings to its foundation, Club for the Future, for space-focused charities. The winner of the seat paid $28 million, according to Blue Origin. But some guests have been able to ride for free.

Since initiating its human spaceflights, Blue Origin has become known for its onboard celebrities and providing short flights for wealthy passengers. The company sent Good Morning America host Michael Strahan up in December 2021. Prior to that, it flew the space captain of America's heart, Star Trek star William Shatner, who was among the oldest people to fly in space at the ripe age of 90. Ed Dwight, NASA's first Black astronaut candidate, also took a Blue Origin flight last year at the age of 90.

Former Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson was readying for a space journey in March 2022 but missed the opportunity after the launch date had to be rescheduled. 

Blue Origin says this will be the first crew composed only of women since the Soviet Union cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo spaceflight in 1963.
