Every Nintendo Switch 2 game you can preorder right now

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 11:20

The Nintendo Switch 2 is officially up for preorder. Whether you were able to snag one of your own through all the website errors, sold out notifications, and canceled preorder emails at midnight on April 24 or you're waiting until later, you'll need something to play when you get yours. Or at least something to get you through your first week with the system.

While you can play most of your old Nintendo Switch games on your new system, you're likely going to want some new releases to enjoy too. Lucky for you, there are several options available right now that you can pick up ahead of the console's debut on June 5.

Below, you can find all of the Nintendo Switch 2 games currently up for preorder.

Where to preorder Nintendo Switch 2 games

Most retailers are offering Nintendo Switch 2 games for preorder, so your first stop for picking up a new title is one of these retailers. Below, find links to each online storefront where you can shop a repository of Switch 2 games available right now.

While some games will be available to pick up on June 5 alongside your new Switch 2, some are not debuting with the system itself. However, you can still preorder the console and then grab the titles you're interested in after its launch later. Given the state of the Switch 2's preorder chaos, it's a good idea to snag the games you want sooner than later so you can make sure you get what you want.

Mario Kart World is one of the spotlight games headed to the Switch 2, with a new open world track system, a slew of new characters added to the roster, new game modes like Knockout Tour and Free Roam, alternate costumes, and much more to explore. While it's available as part of a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle, it's also available on its own if you missed out preordering the system with it.

Donkey Kong Bananza Opens in a new window Credit: Target Donkey Kong Bananza $69.99 at Target

Donkey Kong is back in an all-new adventure. It's your job to help him swing through the Underground World as he smashes his way through, collecting bananas along the way. It's full of destructible environments, with almost everything able to be destroyed, making this a less linear platformer with multiple paths and hidden items to find sprinkled throughout. This isn't a launch title for the Switch 2, but it'll be available soon after the system debuts.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch 2 Edition) Opens in a new window Credit: Target The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch 2 Edition) $79.99 at Target

It also adds the new Zelda Notes app, which offers voice-assisted navigation via GPS from Princess Zelda herself, as well as the ability to create and share creations with QR codes.

Switch 2 fans crashed GameStop, Target, and Walmart in bid to secure new Nintendo console

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 11:13

Nintendo Switch 2 preorders went up on Thursday at midnight, and rather predictably, every retailer website subsequently exploded. Now, GameSop is down as well.

While most retailers put preorders live at midnight, GameStop waited until 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, at which point their website promptly crashed.

Last night, the Switch 2 preorder feeding frenzy led to widespread problems with the web infrastructure for major retail chains, as first spotted by The New York Post. All one has to do is look at the Down Detector pages for Walmart, Best Buy, and Target to see that each of those retailers had significant problems around midnight, which led to some users having trouble securing their Switch 2s. (Disclosure: Ziff Davis owns both Mashable and Down Detector.)

SEE ALSO: How to track Switch 2 preorder availability in case it sells out

Walmart users were sent into a digital queue that worked for some and never ended for others, while Target gave users error screens throughout the process, per IGN. Best Buy's preorders went live half an hour later than they should have, with some users reporting errors on that end, too.

So, how do you get your preorder in while supplies are still available?

If you didn't manage to snag one last night and GameStop doesn't work out for you, you still have options. I recommend monitoring restock alerts on social media, but you can also preorder directly through Nintendo starting on May 8...if you're a true enough gamer. So many hoops to jump through just for a chance to play Mario Kart World.

Preorder the Nintendo Switch 2 at GameStop and get the best trade-in offer

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 11:00

preorder ahead of the June 5 launch Get Deal

Amid the chaos of tariffs and price fluctuations, we finally have some clarity. The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5 and preorders went live this morning. If you're hoping to reserve a console to keep you busy for the summer and beyond, here's how to preorder at GameStop.

As of April 24 at 11 a.m., GameStop preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 are live. The console sells for $449.99 or you can go with the Nintendo Switch 2 with Mario Kart World bundle for $499.99. GameStop is offering a trade-in credit of up to $175 toward a new Nintendo Switch 2 through April 30. Trade-in a Switch OLED to get the maximum credit or hand over your old Switch V1 or V2 to get up to $125 in credit.

After waiting patiently, today is the day we finally get to preorder the Nintendo Switch 2. Orders went live at Target and Best Buy at midnight, and those are currently sold out. If you're hoping to grab a preorder at GameStop, it's best to get on that ASAP.

SEE ALSO: Nintendo Switch 2 hands-on: 3 things that make it a must-buy

Of course, we're all quietly sobbing about the price of the new Nintendo Switch 2, but you can dry some of those tears if you're in the mood to trade in your old(er) Switch. GameStop leads the way as offering the best trade-in offers, but you'll need to get that done before the April 30 deadline. By comparison, Best Buy will take a Switch OLED in exchange for $90 of credit and a skimpy $20 for a regular Switch. Keep in mind the best trade in results come from offering up a console in good condition will all components like the dock, HDMI cable, and both Joy-Cons.

Your new Nintendo Switch 2 will come with all the accessories needed to have a summer of gaming like Joy-Con Grips, the dock, and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.

If you preorder today with GameStop, you won't have to wait around for the device to ship on June 5 with a delivery date some days after that. GameStop has said all stores will open at 12 a.m. ET on June 5 for pre-order pickups. That means if you live on the West Coast, you'll be able to grab your console at 9 p.m. PT June 4.

Get those clicks in quickly because preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 are now live at GameStop, and they're likely to sell out quickly. You'll want to grab your new console here if you're trading in an older console since GameStop has the best trade-in value, by far.

Microsoft report: 1 in 3 business leaders are considering replacing workers with AI

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 10:59

Microsoft's annual Work Trend Index report is here and, unsurprisingly, AI is the hot topic in the 2025 edition.

The big takeaway: 1 in 3 business leaders say that they are considering layoffs as a result of AI deployment in their companies. According to the report, 33 percent of leaders are already "considering headcount reductions" because of AI.

The new report also highlights how "frontier firms" are integrating AI into their workflow. Microsoft describes these frontier firms as companies "structured around on-demand intelligence and powered by 'hybrid' teams of humans + agents."

"Frontier Firms are already taking shape, and within the next 2-5 years we expect that every organization will be on their journey to becoming one," says Microsoft.

According to the report, 81 percent of business leaders say that AI agents will be "moderately or extensively integrated" into the company's strategy over the next year. Close to half of the business leaders surveyed in the report say that "expanding team capacity" with AI agents is a top priority.

For some companies, the shift is underway now, with 46 percent of business leaders saying that their company uses AI agents "to fully automate workflows or processes." Another 24 percent of leaders say that AI is currently deployed throughout their company in some capacity.

Microsoft's Work Index Report does stress the importance of the "human-agent team," highlighting that human workers are still needed. In addition, 78 percent of business leaders say that they are considering hiring for AI-specific roles. And on top of that, AI startups are hiring at "nearly twice the pace" of big tech companies, according to an analysis of LinkedIn data.

To create the 2025 Work Trend Index report, Microsoft surveyed 31,000 workers around the world and factored in LinkedIn labor market trends.

Until Dawn review: How does this horror movie adaptation compare to the hit survival game?

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 09:00

For decades, the phrase "video game movie" was synonymous with trash, thanks to critically loathed adaptations of games like Street Fighter, Silent Hill, and (the unfairly underrated) Super Mario Bros. But over the past few years, Hollywood has seen audiences embrace a new animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, three Sonic the Hedgehog movies, a prestige drama series based on The Last of Us, and The Minecraft Movie, which has teens going wild, tossing popcorn, and shouting catchphrases in the theaters.

SEE ALSO: Teens are causing chaos in 'Minecraft' movie screenings

With enthusiasm for video game adaptations at an all-time high, there should be no better moment for a movie version of Until Dawn to hit theaters. Even the critically panned Five Nights At Freddy's scored enough box office bank to merit a sequel. However, the filmmakers of Until Dawn face a unique challenge, as this game's whole jam was putting players in the shoes of teens being stalked by a merciless slasher. To merely transpose the story written by Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick could risk feeling too similar to other horror movies, but moreover would potentially miss out on the game's most addictive element.

Rather than just replaying a level, the game uses a specific mechanism tied to the butterfly effect, positing that different choices mean different outcomes for the characters. Throughout the game, players are given the opportunity to make key decisions that could change their characters' fate, as signified by an onscreen butterfly effect screen; after making the decision, the game auto-saves, making it endlessly replayable. (Black Mirror's Bandersnatch would make a similar game a few years later, allowing audiences to choose-your-adventure the fate of the spinoff movie's tormented hero.)

But how could a movie reasonably bring that dynamic into theaters, where no controller would hand over choices to the audience? In Until Dawn, the filmmakers employ an enticing dynamic that aims to mirror gameplay while rejecting the tropes associated with its sci-fi subgenre.

Until Dawn brings a time loop into a familiar story.  Ella Rubin stars as Clover, a girl in search of her sister, in "Until Dawn." Credit: Kerry Brown / Sony Pictures Entertainment

At a glance, screenwriters Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman shed much of the game's materials. Gone are the high school archetypes of jock, nerd, mean girl, jealous boyfriend, and bullied misfit, which allowed players to get a quick read on the characters. In their place is a smaller group of friends who don't easily fall into stock characters. And they aren't reuniting for a weekend getaway, as was the premise of the game. Instead, Clover (Ella Rubin), her childhood besties Nina (Odessa A’zion) and Megan (Ji-young Yoo), her ex-boyfriend Max (Michael Cimino), and Nina's new boyfriend Abe (Belmont Cameli) are on an uncomfortable road trip, searching for Clover's sister Melanie, who went missing a year before.

Their search brings them to the ominously named Glore Valley, where a welcome center becomes a temporal trap, pitching them into a time loop that is determined to kill them all before dawn.

Once within the grips of Glore Valley, Clover and her friends are doomed to repeat the night, running from a rampaging killer, dodging monsters that prowl the adjacent forest, and generally trying not to die. Every time they do, they end up back where they started, forced to face the night again. Each time (like in the time-loop slasher Happy Death Day), their bodies are bruised and battered from the night before. The only way out is through, meaning they either survive until dawn to break whatever curse this is or they become a part of it, doomed to terrorize the next unlucky tourist to approach the welcome center's guest book.

The game dynamics are smartly translated… until they're not.  Credit: Kerry Brown / Sony Pictures Entertainment

At first, the time loop seems a clever way to bring an element of the original gameplay into the theater. In a lot of video games, the character dies and gets bumped back to the beginning of the level (or save point), and the player uses what they learned from this failure to get further the next time. A similar device was used in The Edge of Tomorrow, though that Tom Cruise action epic was not based on a video game.

There's just two problems with this time-loop device in the movie Until Dawn. For one thing, that's not how the game worked. If a character bit it, the game's plot moves on to another character, and you play either until they're all dead or you make it to dawn. Sure, players could go back to the chapters before they played out that timeline. But how it plays in the movie is not as a choice; it's just do or die.

The other, bigger issue is that the movie gives up on this device partway through, and for no apparent reason. At first, when Clover and her friends realize they're in a time loop, they decide to create a strategy to help them all survive. Like in the game, they begin to gather clues and even a literal key as they make their way into Glore Valley's grim lore and horrifying landscape of sunken houses, a dilapidated sanatorium, and collapsed mines infested with monsters. However, as the film nears the third act, this plan of exploring and working together is abruptly abandoned. It's not for any character-motivated reasoning, like tensions growing as the toll of repeated deaths weighs on their psyches. It's because they abruptly discover they can no longer remember the events from one night to the next, and all of a sudden — after a grimly comical montage of mayhem — they're on their last night.

Even the time loop collapses early, with the screenwriters treating each night not as a new opportunity to provide a fresh twist on their established loop, but a chance to haphazardly dip into horror tropes. In one moment, the teens are fleeing a masked murderer, and in the next they're escaping creatures from the game, then battling a witch or some very explosive food poisoning. The characters lampshade this development by commenting that what they're going through is "not like those movies." But those movies were often using the familiar framework to catch the audience off guard with new twists as they incorrectly anticipate what comes next. By abandoning this path, Until Dawn becomes unmoored.

Until Dawn is a horror smorgasbord that's just not satisfying.  Ella Rubin and Peter Stormare come face-to-face in "Until Dawn." Credit: Kerry Brown / Sony Pictures Entertainment

Director David F. Sandberg, whose previously helmed Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, and the Shazam movies, has a clear enthusiasm for gore. He drags his heroes through muck, splashes them with blood, and even blows them to smithereens. The kills in Until Dawn are spectacularly gruesome, which may be enough to please some horror fans. Others may relish props and scares that clearly allude to such classics of the genre like Poltergeist with its creepy clown doll, or Mario Bava's Shock and its uniquely harrowing hallway scare. But while Until Dawn offers a lot of intriguing bits of different kinds of horror movies, as a whole it's a gloppy mess.

The problem begins with Clover and her crew, who are hastily sketched and defined chiefly as friends. Beyond that, one believes she's psychic. One still pines for his ex. One has a boyfriend. Clover, beyond desperately seeking her sister, has no real character. So, watching them ping-pong from one nightmare to the next has no emotional weight. They have far less dimension than the game characters, whose flaws and virtues are unfurled over the course of hours and hours of gameplay. The movie's heroes feel less flesh and blood, despite being live-action and despite their actual flesh and blood being ripped to shreds before our very eyes.

Beyond that, the plotline becomes a tangle of ideas that leans on the surreal as a crutch that can't support it. It's a pleasure to see the return of Peter Stormare, the only actor who made the leap from the video game to the movie. But even his role feels slapped in, as if the final act of the film was hastily rewritten or reshot in a frenzy. Overall, the heaping-on of various disparate horror elements makes Until Dawn feel like a malformed anthology, offering the iconography without the connective tissue to make it truly scary.

This mishandling makes for a finale that is far less frightening than it is frustrating, because it is just inexplicable. The rules of this world (or game) become less and less clear as the sands run through the hourglass. In the end, Until Dawn's ties to its source material are so sparse that it is less a bad movie adaption of a video game and more a generic, underwhelming horror flick.

Until Dawn opens in theaters April 25.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey vibing to Xanadu is deeply healing

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 06:54

If you're still reeling days after that episode of The Last of Us Season 2, here's something that might heal you ever so slightly.

In a promo video by HBO Max, stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey finish up their chat by vibing out to a song that answers the question: "What song would you choose to sum up our time working together?"

Folks, it's Olivia Newton-John's impeccable 1980 gem "Xanadu," a dreamy tale of a place where nobody dared to go and the love that we came to know. "Very Last of Us," says Pascal. "Theme song."

It's a record Ramsey explains they bought for Pascal in the clip above (it's at the top and at 5:54). In Max's extended TikTok version of the moment, Ramsey tells Pascal, "You got a new number, texted me the link to the 'Xanadu' song to prove to me that it was you. You're like, 'Hi, it's Pedro. Got a new number,' and sent me 'Xanadu.'"

Watching this pair then play the track, with Ramsey singing and Pascal taking on the role of backup dancer, might be a temporary moment of healing for those still broken by Sunday's episode and the big death — a moment you can also watch Ramsey and Pascal reacting to.

The Last of Us Season 2 is now streaming on Max. New episodes air weekly on Sundays 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

For everything The Last of Us, Mashable's got you covered.

Perplexitys voice assistant is now available on iOS

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 06:19

Perplexity's voice assistant has hit Apple devices.

Announced by the San Francisco-based, Nvidia- and Jeff Bezos-backed company on X on Wednesday, the AI search engine's iOS app now includes the ability to chat aloud with the assistant. Perplexity's Android app launched in January in 15 languages.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

The voice assistant allows you to move beyond the app itself within the conversation in order to book a table at a restaurant or a rideshare, provide directions, check your calendar, play music, or draft and send an email.

Perplexity's voice assistant arrives on iOS at a time when competitors like Google's Gemini Live, OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice Mode, and AI startup Sesame are aiming for seamless chats aloud with multimodal AI assistants.

The news also comes just over a month after Perplexity announced its own Deep Research tool, powered by a version of DeepSeek R1.

Tesla has launched a robotaxi service, but only for employees

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 06:06

Tesla has already launched an autonomous taxi service, but you can only use it if you're working at Tesla.

On Wednesday, the company announced on X it launched an "FSD Supervised ride-hailing service" (meaning Full Self-Driving) for an "early set of employees in Austin & San Francisco Bay Area."

According to Tesla, the service has already completely more than 1,500 trips and over 15,000 driving miles.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

It's just a test before the real thing goes live, supposedly in June this year, as CEO Elon Musk told investors in January. "This service helps us develop & validate FSD networks, the mobile app, vehicle allocation, mission control & remote assistance operations," the company wrote on X on Wednesday.

SEE ALSO: Robot, take the wheel: What you need to know about autonomous vehicles rolling out across the U.S.

After years of teasers from Musk, Tesla announced a robotaxi service (and an autonomous car called Cybercab), in October 2024. And while Tesla said at the time Cybercab isn't due to arrive on the market earlier than 2026, the company also said that an unsupervised, autonomous robotaxi service should arrive in Texas and California in 2025.

This is now partially true, as the service is still supervised. In a video accompanying the announcement above, you can see that a human driver sits in the front seat and monitors the car's driving during rides. A notice at the bottom of the video says that the "safety driver is present to supervise and only intervene as necessary. FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous."

It's nice to see Tesla making progress on its robotaxi vision, though it's worth noting that other companies, including Alphabet's Waymo and GM's Cruise, have been running driverless, autonomous taxi services for years in parts of California, Arizona, and Texas. The status of the U.S. trade war with China seems to be changing daily. Tariffs on imports from China will undoubtedly raise prices, given how many goods sold in the U.S. are made there. But how much will the tariffs actually end up costing, how will businesses respond to them, and will shipments from China keep coming?

Honestly, we don't have the answers to these questions. With so much uncertainty, Americans are stocking up on their favorite electronics and Shein goods.

As Mashable reported this week, sex toys are typically made in China, and it's likely that unless the Trump administration reverses course on tariffs, prices will be going up.

That may lead you to ask: Should you be panic-buying your favorite vibrators? It's not the most straightforward question, so let's break it down.

Have extra money to buy a sex toy? BUY

I'm no financial expert, but if you have some extra cash right now, purchasing a toy before prices go up wouldn't hurt. The best time to buy was probably yesterday. Sex toy company Dame, for example, has added a $15 "Trump tariff surcharge" to purchases, up from $5 when tariffs were initially announced.

Pleasure jewelry company Crave told Mashable that they stocked up on extra inventory (because of Trump's history with tariffs on China). So, prices are currently the same, but that may not be the case forever. "[O]wing to the extreme tariffs and their apparent likelihood of being maintained, it is unclear how long we can keep our current pricing," Crave stated in an email to customers.

While there are toys $100 and over, plenty of inexpensive options exist as well that you may want to snatch up before prices increase, such as the Ava Vivv massage wand, which is somehow on sale for $10.99 as of this writing (read our review of the Ava Vivv wand). Or peruse BBOutlet, the inexpensive toy platform from Bellesa.

If you can't afford anything but the basics right now, however, then no. Don't buy a sex toy, and the subsequent questions may not apply to you. You may need to go analog for a while.

Are your sex toys broken? BUY

If your vibrator is a decade old and on the fritz, you may want to purchase one sooner rather than later. That doesn't mean buy a dozen new vibrators to make up for the lost one. One may be plenty, especially if there are certain vibrations (rumbly vs. clit-sucking) you vibe with the most, so to speak.

Worried about dupes? BUY

If there's a sex toy brand you love or always wanted to try, now is the time to buy — and from the brand's own site.

"From skincare to pleasure products, these are things that you do not skimp on," said co-founder and creative director of Crave, Ti Chang, in an interview with Mashable. She warned consumers to watch out for unethical companies that don't seem to have real people behind them, but AI-generated photos and copy.

Some no-name companies may try to copy the aesthetics of a well-known or more expensive brand. If you can't read any information on the material products are made of (that go in and around your body!), nor anything about the people who make them, or the process, you'll want to steer clear. Sex toy dupes on Shein are a good example.

"People are still wanting good products," said Chang, but due to price increases, "they may be forced to try to experience some dupes at their peril."

That's not to say that some sex toys on sites like Amazon can't be awesome, but do your research. Search for reviews on credible third-party sites (like Mashable!) and read product information closely to see what's legit. Mashable has a full guide on choosing a sex toy to help you out.

The Cybercriminals Who Organized a $243 Million Crypto Heist

No, those Chinese factory TikToks wont help you bypass Trumps tariffs

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 05:00

You’ve probably seen them: TikToks seemingly filmed on bustling Chinese warehouse floors. It’s practically its own genre now — an energetic salesperson, channeling late-night infomercial vibes, promising Americans direct access to factory-made goods that somehow bypass President Donald Trump's punishing tariffs.

In theory, it's a tempting proposition. These videos dangle luxury goods at rock-bottom prices, suggesting — without much explanation — that buyers are skipping out on Trump-era tariffs. The TikToks started cropping up around the time Trump announced, and then partially retracted, harsh reciprocal tariffs. But here’s the catch: a whopping 145 percent tariff on many Chinese goods still stands. The appeal of buying directly from factories, cutting out middlemen, and dodging tariffs is understandably strong.

Unfortunately for American consumers, the reality doesn’t live up to the promise.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

A number of the early viral posts claiming such, like one about Lululemon and another about Louis Vuitton, have seemingly been deleted. After one such TikTok circulated, Lululemon told CNN that it "does not work with the manufacturers identified in the online videos," adding a warning to consumers about counterfeit products and misinformation.

And Lululemon is just one example. Claims about direct-to-consumer Hermès bags, cheap Birkenstocks, and other supposed luxury steals have all been debunked. The bottom line is simple: Any factory offering genuine luxury goods at a deep discount is almost certainly not legit. At best, you’re getting a knockoff. And even if the factory did produce the goods for a luxury brand, which isn’t always the case, contracts with those brands would prevent them from selling directly to consumers.

"Any contracts they have with their supply chain would specifically ban the factory selling direct to anyone, with or without a logo, with or without finishing," Margaret Bishop, a global textile and apparel industry consultant, told GQ.

Amid concern over tariffs, Chinese apps like DHGate and Taobao, known for selling dupes and luxury-inspired goods, shot up the App Store charts. It is possible to get Chinese-made products for cheap, but if they're hawking luxe goods, then you're not getting the real thing. And there’s still no loophole to avoid tariffs altogether — just ways to reduce costs by opting for non-branded, factory-made alternatives. That doesn’t mean all Chinese goods are of poor quality. In fact, many aren’t.

"A lot of modern Chinese manufacturing is really amazing," Wiley Wakeman, assistant professor in the department of management organization at Stockholm School of Economics, told GQ. "They can do things in ways that are fantastic. A lot of workers get paid very well, but that is not universal. It's kind of a patchwork of different manufacturers, different standards, and different motives."

These viral TikTok videos struck a chord with Americans because the appeal is real. Life’s expensive enough without a trade war adding to the cost of living. Who wouldn’t be tempted by the promise of a good deal? Who doesn’t want to stick it to a policy they disagree with?

"The idea of finding what you think is a secret deal online is incredibly enticing," fashion expert Derek Guy, aka the Menswear Guy on X, told NPR.

This isn't to say that luxury brands don't outsource some of their manufacturing to China or that luxury goods are always worth the price tag. But if a TikTok salesperson is offering designer items for ultra-cheap prices, it’s probably wise to think twice before clicking "buy."

Scientists find subtle clues ancient Mars had rainy days, too

Mashable - Thu, 04/24/2025 - 05:00

For the past four years, NASA's Perseverance rover has rambled over a region of Mars where scientists say a strong river once emptied into a crater, creating a large delta.

But for that to have happened, a lot of water would have gushed — something difficult to explain if the Red Planet were always frozen.

Computer simulations show that ancient Mars likely experienced regular rain and snow, which helped shape vast networks of river valleys and lakes. The distribution of these land features lines up better with precipitation models than merely the effects of melted ice caps, according to a new paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets

The research, performed by geologists at the University of Colorado in Boulder, argues that our planetary neighbor, on average 140 million miles away in space, was warm and wet billions of years ago, challenging a long-held belief that early Mars was mostly cold and icy.

Most scientists agree that at least some water existed on the surface during a period about 4 billion years ago, but where the water came from has been up for debate, said Amanda Steckel, who led the study as a doctoral student.

"We see these valleys beginning at a large range of elevations," Steckel said in a statement. "It’s hard to explain that with just ice."

SEE ALSO: A NASA rover just exposed something on Mars that eluded orbiters NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft created this topographical map of a region near the planet's equator with its Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter. Credit: NASA

The researchers created a digital version of part of Mars and tested different climate scenarios. In some computer simulations, they added widespread rain or snow. For others, they only tried melting down polar ice. Then, they used the software to simulate what would happen if that water flowed for thousands of years.

Their goal was to determine whether ancient Mars may have had a more Earth-like climate, at least for a while.

The results showed when precipitation was part of the climate, valleys and streams formed in many different regions at varying elevation points. When water came only from melted ice, the valleys mostly formed in the highlands, in close proximity to where the ice caps would have been.

The team compared the simulation data to real images from NASA spacecraft that have observed Mars from orbit. The patterns created by rain or snow more closely matched what is actually seen on the Martian surface.

Mars' oldest terrains appear to have eroded into branching valleys, similar to regions of Earth where rain and snow have caused runoff. Credit: NASA / JPL-Caltech / Univ. of Arizona

"Water from these ice caps starts to form valleys only around a narrow band of elevations," Steckel said. "Whereas if you have distributed precipitation, you can have valley heads forming everywhere."

Today, snow occasionally falls on Mars, but only in the coldest extremes, according to NASA: at the poles and under cloud cover at night. So far there's no photographic evidence of Martian snowfall — clouds obscure the cameras on spacecraft — but other instruments are capable of detecting it.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, for example, has the Mars Climate Sounder, which has collected data on carbon dioxide snow — aka dry ice — as it fell to the ground. The Phoenix lander also used a laser-based tool to spot snow made of water near the Martian north pole in 2008.

The team still doesn't fully grasp how Mars could have stayed warm enough for rain or snow, especially since the young sun was about 25 percent dimmer than it is today. Despite the mystery, geologist and study coauthor Brian Hynek says without rain, landforms like Perseverance's Jezero Crater just don't make sense. The dried delta, for example, features scattered boulders.

"You’d need meters deep of flowing water to deposit those kinds of boulders," he said.

Here's what's new on streaming, from worst to best.

8. Locked

Want to watch Bill Skarsgård be tortured by Anthony Hopkins for 95 minutes? Then Locked is for you.

The star of such horror reboots as The Crow and Nosferatu ditches the prosthetics for a lean thriller about being trapped in a car. In this remake of the Argentinian film 4X4, deadbeat dad Eddie Barrish (Skarsgård) can't get a break. So, to prove to his child and baby mama he's got the scratch to be a decent parent, he attempts to rob a really posh car that's sitting out in a parking lot. Unfortunately for Eddie, this particular vehicle is rigged with cameras, tasers, and a remote driving system that will turn his clumsy attempt at grand theft auto into a Saw-like horror thriller. Playing the malicious mastermind behind it all is Hopkins, who is mostly seen and not heard.

The premise is intriguing, but the execution from screenwriter Michael Arlen Ross and director David Yarovesky is awful. A half-hearted class warfare thriller that makes a spectacle of torture, Locked is anything but fresh. — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

Starring: Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins

How to watch: Locked is available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

7. Hell of a Summer

Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard co-writes, co-directs, and co-stars alongside Billy Bryk in this slasher comedy of errors. Wolfhard and Bryk play besties who are returning to the sleepaway camp Camp Pineway — not as campers but as counselors. They hope this will unlock new levels of summer shenanigans and sex. But when a killer starts slaughtering their fellow counselors ahead of the campers' arrival, it's hard to know who to trust.

Playing an overgrown but earnest camp counselor, Fear Street's Fred Hechinger proves the heart of this bloody comedy. And while an absolute charmer, he can't elevate this parody that has only a superficial understanding of this horror subgenre. The result is a movie that's fitfully amusing, but never scary and rarely surprising. — K.P.

Starring: Finn Wolfhard, Billy Bryk, Abby Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai

How to watch: Hell of a Summer is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

6. Babygirl

As a titillating follow-up to the humorous whodunnit Bodies Bodies Bodies, writer/director Halina Reijn delivered Babygirl. Nicole Kidman stars as a high-powered CEO balancing a demanding professional life with a personal life that includes her gentle theater director husband (Antonio Banderas) and high-energy teen daughters (Vaughan Reilly and Esther McGregor). Her world turns upside down when a cocky intern (Harris Dickinson) begins to flirt with her in a most inappropriate manner.

SEE ALSO: 'Babygirl' finally shows us what subspace feels like

Delving into the juicy topics of sex, power dynamics, forbidden lust, and identity, Babygirl is an electrifying blend of humor and yearning that is absolutely dizzying, in the best way possible. As I wrote in our rave review out of TIFF, "Emotionally naked, unapologetically provocative, and defiantly playful, Reijn's film joyfully explores the complicated ties that bind. Amid stiff competition, she delivers one of the sexiest, most thrilling films of the year."*K.P.

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas

How to watch: Babygirl begins streaming on Max on April 25.

5. Gladiator II

Ridley Scott returns to ancient Rome with this long-awaited sequel to Gladiator. Following in the footsteps of his idol/father, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is a gladiator pitched into the violent contest for the amusement of two brat emperors, Emperor Geta (Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (Thelma's Fred Hechinger). But while they party with the likes of beguiling arms dealer Macrinus (Denzel Washington in top form), a coup brews with the help of a dashing Roman general (The Last of Us' Pedro Pascal).

Full of robust action sequences inspired by stranger-than-fiction gladiator battles, this sequel is sure to shock and awe audiences. But a bit of warning. If you're still hurting from Sunday night's episode of The Last of Us, you might want to give yourself some time before seeing this Pascal offering. — K.P.

Starring: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington

How to watch: Gladiator II is now streaming on Prime Video.

4. You, Season 5

Are you ready for the final chapter of the murderous adventures of Joe Goldberg? Season 5 of You is back, as are Penn Badgley's broody vibes and trusty baseball cap. Joe is revisiting his old stomping grounds in New York City, where he worked at Mooney's bookstore and murdered poor Guinevere Beck.

On these streets, will be be able to make a fresh start with his second wife Kate (Charlotte Ritchie)? Will he be haunted by old ghosts? Will he find a new girl to obsess over? Will old habits die hard? Ten new episodes will answer all these questions, while being twisted as hell and even hotter than that. — K.P.

Starring: Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, Madeline Brewer, Griffin Matthews, and Anna Camp

How to watch: Season 5 of You debuts on Netflix April 24.

3. Étoile, Season 1

Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino turns to the ballet for her latest TV show, Étoile. Named after the French word for star, or the term for a ballet company's principal dancer, the series centers on two ballet companies — one French, one American — undertaking a daring publicity stunt in order to rejuvenate the public's interest in ballet. The companies swap key talent, like étoile Cheyenne Toussaint (Lou de Laâge) and choreographer Tobias Bell (Gideon Glick), for one season, resulting in a clash of cultures and egos that's a delicious treat to watch.

SEE ALSO: 'Étoile' review: Amy Sherman-Palladino brings us to the ballet

Like Sherman-Palladino's prior work, Étoile finds its humor in snappy dialogue and the strength of its ensemble, led by Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg, whose dueling ballet directors are always putting out some fire or another (or, let's face it, starting some of their own). Come for the lovingly filmed dance scenes, stay for the drama kings and queens who make the ballet tick. As I wrote in my review, "While [Étoile] may not immediately shine as brightly as Sherman-Palladino's best-known works, it's still a frothy fun look into the breakneck world of dancers fighting to make art on their own terms." — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter

Starring: Luke Kirby, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lou de Laâge, Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, and David Haig

How to watch: All episodes of Étoile Season 1 are now streaming on Prime Video.

2. Conclave

One of the best films of 2024, Conclave has new relevance with the passing of Pope Francis. If you wonder what's next for the Catholic church, this surprisingly funny thriller will give you some idea!

Adapted from Robert Harris' 2016 novel of the same name, Conclave is set deep within the sacred halls of the Vatican, where cardinals gather together for a series of secret votes to determine who among them will be God's representative on Earth. And as dean of the conclave, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked not only with keeping things running smoothly but also sussing out what skeletons lie in the closets of the contenders.

SEE ALSO: 'Conclave' review: Vatican-set thriller is divinely fun

And yet within this dramatic framework, the charming ensemble (which includes Isabella Rossellini, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow) laces in a catty sense of humor, which has sparked memes on social media. Through this divine blend of suspense and subtle comedy, helmer Edward Berger delivers a thriller that is devilishly entertaining.*K.P.

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini

How to watch: Conclave is now streaming on Prime Video.

1. Andor, Season 2

The best Star Wars show is back for its second (and tragically final) season, so make sure to get on the Andor train while it's still rolling. Season 2 picks up one year after the end of Season 1, with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) now a fully fledged member of the Rebellion. Andor, Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), and more continue the fight against the Galactic Empire, but their revolution comes with deep personal sacrifice, leading Andor down some of its darkest roads yet.

SEE ALSO: 'Andor' Season 2 review: The best Star Wars show goes out with a brilliant bang

From tense board meetings to covert missions on the planet Ghorman, Andor remains part suspenseful spy thriller, part terrifying showcase of fascism in motion. By all rights, it's unmissable TV, whether you're a Star Wars fan or not. As I wrote in my Season 2 review, "Andor goes out on its own terms, leaving a brilliant, blistering look at fascism and those who fight it in its wake." — B.E.

Starring: Diego Luna, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw, Genevieve O'Reilly, Denise Gough, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu, and Elizabeth Dulau

How to watch: The first three episodes of Andor Season 2 premiered April 22 on Disney+, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
