Philips now allows customers to 3D print replacement parts

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 12:06

Philips is embracing the "right to repair" movement.

The Dutch tech company has started up a new program called "Philips Fixables," per Tom's Hardware. The idea behind Philips Fixables is that users will be able to 3D print their own replacement parts for Philips products, using exact Philips specifications, at home. The plan is for Philips to put the files up on Printables.com, a popular home for 3D printing information, for free.

SEE ALSO: A popular YouTuber tore open the Google Pixel 9a and found a big red flag

There are, of course, a few catches to this. One is that it's seemingly only available in the Czech Republic right now, though it will obviously expand to other regions over time. Another is that the only replacement part that's currently available for 3D printing is a 3mm comb for one of Philips' shavers, so Philips didn't launch with a particularly exhaustive list of parts for users to print.

The right to repair personal electronics has gained a ton of momentum over the past several years. Some manufacturers, like Framework, produce laptops that are meant to be opened up and messed around with by users. On the flip side, Google received some criticism this week for making it nearly impossible for users to perform their own battery replacements on the recently launched Pixel 9a phone.

With the spread of accessible 3D printing tech (as well as economic concerns about inflation and tariffs), don't be surprised to see this kind of thing become more popular over time.

Review: I compared Sony’s new XM6 headphones to the competition

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 12:00

On May 15, Sony launched its latest flagship product, the noise-cancelling WH-1000XM6 headphones. It's been three long years since the previous-generation XM5 headphones were released, and there is one major design change: The headphones now fold up for easy portability.

Otherwise, I'd class the changes as more iterative than innovative, but if you want best-in-class noise-cancellling headphones and pristine audio quality, the headphones deliver — with a catch. The new Sony XM6 headphones are about $50 more expensive than the XM5s.

The most likely explanation for the price increase? Tariffs, of course. There's been a rash of tech price hikes lately, but let's not go there.

So, how do the new Sony headphones sound? I've been testing the headphones ahead of their official launch, and I believe they (mostly) justify their $449.99 price tag. We'll be updating this review as we spend more time with these wireless headphones, but let's dive into my first-hand impressions.

You can also watch my Sony XM6 headphones review in video form, if you prefer:

Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones review: How do they sound?

When testing the XM6 headphones, I compared them to other elite wireless headphones and earbuds. Specifically, I've also tested the Sony XM5 headphones, Dyson OnTrac headphones, Bose QuietComfort Ultra, and Panasonic Technics AZ100s, among others. Sony's new flagship headphones definitely hold their own among other flagship cans and buds, but do they offer the best sound I've ever encountered? Not quite.

The new Sony headphones offer impressive audio quality, and they definitely improve on the XM5 models. The active noise cancellation is particularly phenomenal (more on that below). I really appreciated the overall balance, depth, and quality of the audio. For the XM6, Sony audio engineers worked with music mastering engineers here in the United States, and the results are clear when you listen to music. Like all headphone reviewers, I have a dedicated playlist for testing new audio products, and I found that vocal-heavy tracks sound particularly great, with noticeable improvements over the XM5s.

While I tend to have weaker bass hearing, I had no trouble picking out the bass line in my favorite Radiohead tracks. As for the mid- and high-frequency range, the vocals on tracks like "Hello" from Adele and "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi rang out clearly, as did the strings in classic Mozart symphonies.

However, I did have one small problem with the audio, which is a disappointment for a pair of $450 headphones. On extremely layered tracks like "National Anthem" from Radiohead or "Outro" by M83, I found the sound a little lacking in clarity. I wouldn't go so far as to call it muddy, but the soundscape did blur a touch. I also found that to truly appreciate all the richness of the XM6 sound, I had to turn the volume up a little higher than I'd like.

Honestly, I think the Technics AZ100 earbuds have just ruined me for other audio products, as the latest Technics driver really has no equal in terms of clarity. Still, these headphones do sound very impressive, and they pass the "bop" test. As in, how much did I bop my head and play air drums while listening to my favorite music? If you're a music lover, I don't think you'll be disappointed with these cans.

One more note: If you love big-thumping bass, as I noted in my video review above, opt for the Sony ULT headphones, which prioritize bass.

Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones review: What's new? The newly released XM6 headphones fold up for portability. Credit: Timothy Beck Werth / Mashable

Sony introduced one major design change with the XM6 headphones: They now fold up for portability. The travel case is also sturdier (the XM5 travel case was truly terrible), with a magnetic closure instead of a very breakable zipper. The case may not look that much smaller in photos, but when you're stuffing them into a backpack, the compact size and shape make a big difference.

The new storage case (left) and the old (right). Credit: Timothy Beck Werth / Mashable

Sony also added a new processor to the headphones. The new Sony QN3 processor is seven times faster, according to Sony, and powers improved adaptive noise cancellation and better call quality thanks to "AI beamforming" tech. Sony also added additional microphones (12 versus the eight in the XM5) for improved noise cancellation. For phone calls, there are six dedicated mics instead of four.

The headband design has also been tweaked for improved comfort, and I have to say these headphones are extremely comfortable. Even while wearing them all day at the office, I didn't have any issues with comfort or ear fatigue.

After three years, you might have hoped for bigger changes. I certainly did. While the foldable design is a much-appreciated change, and while there are improvements to sound, those are differences of degrees, not miles. Sony also made no improvements to battery life. The XM6 headphones have the same 30-hour battery life (with ANC engaged) as the last model. In my Dyson OnTrac review, I noted that Dyson hid extra battery packs in the headband to power its incredible 55-hour battery, but Sony seems to have opted for foldability over a battery improvement.

The overall aesthetic is still recognizably Sony, so if you liked the look of the XM5 headphones, you'll like the new design as well.

Can you tell the difference between the XM5 and XM6 at a glance? Credit: Timothy Beck Werth / Mashable

To me, they also prove that headphones have somewhat plateaued. Just look at the newest Apple AirPods Max headphones, which added USB-C charging and not much else with their most recent update. I imagine Sony and Apple audio engineers reluctantly telling their bosses, "We can't make the drivers any better than they already are!" That's not entirely fair, as Sony did make some tweaks for improved vocals (which you can really hear), but I do think we're reaching the peak of headphone quality, barring a big advancement in audio technology.

Two more important notes: First, the multi-point pairing here is absolutely seamless. I could switch between my iPhone and MacBook with no issues. Second, you can now listen to music and charge the headphones at the same time.

Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones review: The ANC is incredible

Sony's flagship headphones have always been at the head of the pack with noise cancellation, and that legacy continues here. The ANC in the XM6 is as good as or better than any I've ever heard.

Good noise cancellation should feel a little bit like magic. When the ANC engages, you should instantly step into a bubble of silence, and that's what you get here. With music playing, the noise cancellation is near perfect. Sure, on the subway, some sounds get through, but under normal listening conditions, it's spooky how sounds disappear. I like to use these headphones at work for their noise cancellation (with no music playing) just so I can focus better.

The ANC on the new flagship Sony headphones works like magic. Credit: Timothy Beck Werth / Mashable

On the downside, while Sony says these headphones have adaptive noise cancellation, they don't really offer much personalization. Some Bose headphones (and the Technics earbuds I mentioned) let you fine-tune the ANC settings to your liking, which would have been a nice addition.

The new Sony XM6 Headphones: Just the specs
  • Processor: Sony QN3

  • Microphones: 12

  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.3 (LDAC support)

  • Battery: 30 hours with ANC (40 hours without)

  • Charge time: ~3.5 hours

  • Noise cancellation: Active noise cancellation

  • Spatial audio: Yes

  • Colors: Midnight blue, black, silver

  • Inputs: USB-C, 3.5mm audio jack

  • Quick charge: 3 hours in 3 minutes

Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones: Are they worth it?

I say yes, absolutely. While I wouldn't say these headphones deliver the best sound I've ever heard, they come close. Add to that elite noise cancellation, a comfortable fit, and a travel-friendly design, and you have flagship headphones that justify their $450 price tag. That being said, they're not an instant upgrade if you already own the XM5 headphones. But if you have an older pair, want LDAC support, or just like the Sony product ecosystem, they're a worthy purchase, no doubt.

While we don't love seeing a price increase, it has been three years since we got the XM5s. On top of that, other flagship headphones from brands like Bose, Dyson, Sonos, and Apple have all come in at $449 and above. If you're a music lover who wants the best possible sound, that's the new price of admission, folks.

You can buy the new Sony headphones now for $449.99 at Sony, Amazon, and Best Buy.

Sonys new flagship XM6 headphones are here — but theres a catch

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 12:00

On May 15, Sony released its newest flagship headphones, the noise-cancelling WH-1000XM6 headphones. The new headphones have improved noise cancellation and sound, but there's a catch — they cost $449.99. That's about $50 more than the previous version, and hardly a surprise in the tariff era. Still, that's a big ask for music lovers.

Mashable has been testing the new wireless headphones over the past couple weeks, and you can read our full review of the new cans (spoiler alert: they sound fantastic). But if you're ready to pass go, drop $450, and collect your new headphones, you can already purchase them at Sony, Amazon, Best Buy, and other retailers.

Sony's flagship headphones always rank among the very best noise-cancelling headphones, and the XM6 are no exception. In this post, we'll cover what's new, what's not, and other need-to-know details on the latest Sony noise cancellers.

You can't release a new product in 2025 without adding some type of AI feature, even if you have to use the term AI liberally. However, Sony really did add a faster chip (seven times faster, the company says), the Sony QN3 processor. That chip powers improved noise cancellation, particularly for phone calls. The other improvements definitely fall into the iterative category, with one big exception: these headphones now fold.

And here are the specs:

  • Processor: Sony QN3

  • Microphones: 12

  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.3 (LDAC support)

  • Battery: 30 hours with ANC (40 hours without)

  • Noise cancellation: Active noise cancellation

  • Spatial audio: Yes

  • Colors: Midnight blue, black, silver

The Sony XM6 Headphones: What's new?

For the new headphones, Sony audio engineers worked with mastering engineers here in the United States to improve the overall audio quality. And when directly comparing them to the XM5 headphones and wireless earbuds, there is a noticeable improvement. (How much better? Read our full XM6 review to find out.)

For call quality, additional microphones and "AI beamforming" provide clearer, more directional sound. For calls, the headphones also feature two additional microphones.

Most importantly, the new headphones are more travel-friendly. The case is slimmer and smaller than the XM5 case. They also trade the terrible, easily broken zipper for a magnetic latch. While the case might not look much smaller, in person, it's significantly more compact. And here's the big news: The headphones now fold up for storage.

The XM6's case is more travel-friendly. Credit: Timothy Beck Werth / Mashable Unlike the previous model, the XM6 headphones fold up for easier storage. Credit: Timothy Beck Werth / Mashable The XM6 Headphones: What's not new?

While Dyson's OnTrac headphones were able to achieve a mighty impressive 55 hours of battery with ANC, the XM6 headphones have exactly the same battery life as the previous model. That's pretty disappointing. (Though, unless you're taking back-to-back 20-hour flights, I'm not sure anyone really needs more than 30 hours of playback at a time.) I would also class the noise cancellation and audio improvements as a matter of degrees, not miles. Considering it's been three years since the previous model, I was hoping for a little more.

Honestly, it's looking like noise-cancelling headphones like this have pretty much plateaued. Just look at the non-existent changes Apple made to the "new" AirPods Max headphones. At least Sony included noticeable audio quality improvements, a new processor, and a big new design change.

Walmart price hikes due to Trumps tariffs could start weeks from now

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 11:33

President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs will soon mean higher prices at Walmart — and that's coming directly from a top executive at the retail giant.

Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey told CNBC in an interview that tariffs were "still too high" and that American customers would shoulder that cost in the coming weeks.

SEE ALSO: Want to avoid tariff price hikes? Shop our giant list of 81 refurbished tech deals.

"We're wired for everyday low prices, but the magnitude of these increases is more than any retailer can absorb," he told CNBC. "It’s more than any supplier can absorb."

Rainey said he was "concerned" that consumers were "going to start seeing higher prices" as a result of the tariffs. Those hikes could come as soon as the end of May, he said, "and then certainly much more in June."

Rainey confirmed to CNBC that a recent deal between the U.S. and China — temporarily dropping tariffs from 145 percent to 30 percent — was not enough of a cut to keep prices flat.

SEE ALSO: Walmart denies tariffs caused reinstatement of 'basket fee'

Walmart recently made headlines when it reinstated a $6.99 "basket fee" for certain grocery orders, which some claimed was due to Trump's tariffs. The company told Mashable, however, that the fee was unrelated to tariffs.

But as Walmart's own CFO confirmed, that doesn't mean tariffs won't cost you at Walmart — and very soon.

The M4 MacBook Air is *still* chilling at its lowest price ever — but for how long?

For a laptop that's only been out two months, a $150 discount is pretty outrageous. Especially when said laptop is a MacBook.

We were pretty dang shocked when Apple's new M4 MacBook Air dropped from $999 to $899, but then it dropped $50 more and our jaws were on the floor. The fact that this deal price is still hanging around over two weeks later is quite the blessing. However, certain color options are now selling out and low stock warnings are starting to pop up. If you want to upgrade your MacBook, we recommend jumping on the deal before it disappears, which could be any day now.

As of May 15, the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air base model, which packs 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, is still chilling at $849 at Amazon. That's 15% off asking price and its lowest price on record.

Called the "best-buy Apple laptop, period," by Mashable's reviewer Stan Schroeder, the M4 MacBook Air is so powerful it's almost overkill. It's 24 percent faster than the already fast M3 Air and in the top five speediest laptops we've tested at Mashable. It's not only our top pick for a MacBook, but one of our top picks for a laptop in general in 2025.

The M4 Air operates near silently, packs an improved 12MP Center Stage FaceTime camera, features open-lid support for two external displays, and lasts for up to 18 hours on a full charge. It's no surprise it earned a Mashable Choice Award and a glowing 4.5 out of 5 stars.

If you're sporting an older MacBook, upgrading for only $849 is practically a no-brainer. But you might want to act fast, as this deal may or may not disappear tomorrow.

Buying a new TV can feel like serious investigative work. First, you need to decode the acronyms. Then you need to locate the measuring tape and measure the desired TV location's space. Many people also choose to head out into the field (a store like Best Buy) to get an up-close-and-personal view of these TVs. And then there's the price comparison which might require making a spreadsheet. All that's to say — buying a new TV can be tough. But we're all in luck today because Amazon has made that decision for us by offering us a deal that's too good to pass up.

As of May 15, the 75-inch Hisense U8N QLED TV is on sale for $939.93, marked down from the standard price of $1,599. That's a massive 41% discount that takes $659.07 off the price tag. By a long shot, this is the lowest price we've ever seen at Amazon.

SEE ALSO: What's the best time of year to buy a TV? Yes, there's an answer.

What's even more impressive about today's deal is the 65-inch Hisense U8N QLED TV is also on sale, but it's priced at $947.99. That means you're actually saving money ($8.06 to be exact) by upgrading to the 75-inch version.

For starters, the 75-inch size of this Hisense U8N deal is pretty great for most living rooms. You'll be in great shape for streaming the latest HBO Max show or catching this season's baseball games. But the Hisense U8N is really noteworthy in its display, which is even more impressed given the affordable price.

Mashable's sister site PCMag (also owned by publisher Ziff Davis) meticulously tested the Hisense U8N and gave it an "outstanding" rating. "The Hisense U8N offers a robust set of features and the brightest picture we've seen for a lower price than many competing TVs," wrote Will Greenwald in his review. And that checks out because Hisense is consistently one of the best TV brands that focuses on offering great bang for your buck.

The best TV deals to shop this week

The Hisesne U8N also shines when it comes to gaming. The 144hz refresh rate is something most budget-friendly TVs can't claim, topping out at 120Hz on many models. It earns a top spot on Mashable's list of the best budget TVs for gaming.

Since the 75-inch Hisense U8N is at its lowest price ever and cheaper than the 65-inch model, now's a great time to upgrade your home entertainment set-up. While the 75-inch Hisesne U8N usually sets you back $1,599, it's on sale today for just $939.93. Saving over $650 on a high-end TV feels great, especially in this economy.

Bring Her Back trailer: Talk to Me directors next film is here to terrify you

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 10:36

In 2023, directors Danny and Michael Phillipou conjured up one of the year's best horror films with their debut Talk to Me. Now, they're back to terrify us all over again with their second film, Bring Her Back.

SEE ALSO: Summer Movie Preview: What's coming to theaters and streaming?

Bring Her Back stars Sally Hawkins as Laura, a new foster mom to siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong). The pair hope to find stability and a happy home with Laura, but instead, they find something more sinister.

As the trailer above reveals, Laura lost her young daughter Cathy (Mischa Heywood). Still reeling from grief, she claims that she never truly found a way to cope with Cathy being gone. Instead, she watches home videos of Cathy and seems to believe that there's a way to "bring her back."

What exactly that process is remains to be seen, but we're guessing it has something to do with Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), another orphan under Laura's care. The trailer shows him convulsing, bloody, on the ground, with some unknown force crawling under his skin. Whatever's happening to him and Laura, it's bad news.

While the trailer of Bring Her Back cooks up scares galore, it also highlights the role grief will play in the film, similarly to Mia's (Sophie Wilde) attempts to reconnect with her mother in Talk to Me. Expect to be frightened, yes, but likely devastated as well.

Bring Her Back hits theaters May 30.

If you want a tablet that simply serves as a tablet, you don't need to spend a fortune. The reliable and capable Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ checks all the boxes a low-cost tablet should — and it's on sale for just under $200.

As of May 15, you can grab the Galaxy Tab A9+ with 128GB of storage and WiFi connectivity for $199.99 instead of $269.99. That's a savings of 26% and just $20 shy of its best price on record.

While it's not as fancy as the Galaxy S9 lineup, the A9+ can still handle your everyday tasks proficiently. The A9+ is the latest model in the A series, which is essentially a budget-friendly version of Samsung's flagship S series. It features an 11-inch display with slim bezels to make for an immersive viewing experience, plus an ultrathin build overall (just 6.9mm thick) ensuring seamless portability. The A9+ also packs quad speakers powered by Dolby Atmos, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor, expandable storage up to 1TB, and OK battery life (it's fine, but nothing to write home about).

Our friends at PCMag (which is owned by Mashable's publisher, Ziff Davis) dubbed it the "best low-cost Android tablet you can buy" last year. They even gave it the coveted Editors' Choice award for affordable Android tablets. It's not perfect or crazy powerful, but it handles everyday tasks — like streaming TV, answering emails, browsing the web, or even running moderately intensive games — like a dream. The subpar battery life can certainly be overlooked for less than $200.

Americana trailer: Sydney Sweeney and Halsey get in gunfights in this neo-Western

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 09:57

Sydney Sweeney and Halsey jump into the Western genre in the upcoming film Americana.

Written and directed by Tony Tost, currently crushing it as the showrunner for Poker Face Season 2, the film had its premiere at 2023's SXSW Festival before being acquired by Lionsgate in 2024.

Americana transports viewers to a small South Dakota town, where the lives of several disparate characters clash when a highly valuable Lakota Ghost Shirt winds up on the black market.

The film boasts an impressive cast, including Sydney Sweeney as Penny Jo, a waitress and aspiring singer. She teams up with restaurant customer Lefty Ledbetter (Paul Walter Hauser) to steal the shirt and sell it, hoping the funds will be enough to jumpstart a glamorous career.

But other town citizens are on the hunt for the artifact as well. Mandy Starr (Halsey) wants to use the shirt as a means to escape from her abusive boyfriend Dillon (Eric Dane), while antiquities dealer Roy Lee Dean (Simon Rex) wants the shirt for himself. Meanwhile, Native Americans Ghost Eye (Zahn McClarnon) and Hank Spears (Derek Hinkey) just want to reclaim the stolen artifact. Also in the mix is Mandy's strange son Calvin (Gavin Maddox Bergman), who believes he's the reincarnation of Sitting Bull.

Watch all these characters collide in the trailer above — sometimes literally, like when Halsey brains Dane with a hammer.

Americana hits theaters Aug. 22.

HBO Max is brutally roasting itself on X

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 09:33

HBO's decision to change the name of its streamer from HBO Max to Max, and then back to Max again two years later, has been an almost comically ridiculous journey — but at least the company's got a sense of humour about it.

After HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery announced the name change on Wednesday, the social media manager running the official @StreamOnMax account proceeded to have a lot of fun with the old new name.

Why are we obsessed with body counts again?

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 09:21

Picture this: it’s a busy Tuesday and you’re running into town to run errands on your lunch break. You’re balancing about six items in your arms and already having a stressful day when you’re approached by a man-child with his phone in your face and a tiny microphone in his hand. That’s when he asks you, “What’s your body count?”

He awaits your answer impatiently and you’re confused, frustrated, and not sure why the question is so important. Yet there’s still an immense pressure to answer it.

This situation, as much as it sounds like a nightmare, is a reality. In fact, it’s a TikTok trend that's amassed an eye-watering 917 million views and counting. Whether it’s viral street interviews, skits, or podcast debates, judging women based on their body counts, or how many people they've had sex with, is algorithmic gold dust for content creators

For something so personal, so irrelevant to anyone else’s life, it’s staggering how much weight society still gives to this arbitrary number. And it's not just about curiosity. This number has somehow become a measure of a person’s worth, particularly for women. And they’re being shamed for views and exploited for the revenue that comes with them.

SEE ALSO: How the internet became a breeding ground for slutshaming

So, why does body count matter so much? Why are we still having these conversations in 2025? And more importantly, why does it always seem to matter more for women than it does for men?

The sexual double standard of body counts

When was the last time a man’s sexual history was used to discredit his character, imply he was ‘used up’, or suggest he was unworthy of love?

Body count judgement is nothing more than good old-fashioned slutshaming, the belittling of women and marginalised genders that keeps purity culture in check. Gigi Engle, clinical sexologist, sex educator, and author of All the F*cking Mistakes: A Guide to Sex, Love, and Life explains that purity culture derives from Christianity and was a movement, gaining mainstream recognition in the 1990s, to emphasise the importance of abstaining from sex before marriage in order to please God. However, purity culture has leaked out of religion and the 1990s and permeated every crevice of modern culture.

“One of purity culture’s biggest myths is the idea that every time a woman has sex, she attaches herself to that person and a part of her has been damaged or taken away." - Gigi Engle, sexologist

Engle tells Mashable that purity culture is built on misinformation about female sexuality, rarely demonising men for the same acts, and is passed off as fact. “One of purity culture’s biggest myths is the idea that every time a woman has sex, she attaches herself to that person and a part of her has been damaged or taken away,” she explains. This belief is rooted in Christian purity culture, dating back to medieval times, and is often referred to as ‘soul ties’, a method of shaming women into keeping their body count low.

Engle adds that soul ties were designed to make women feel guilty for having more than one sexual partner. “Purity culture scares us into believing we’ll lose any chance of finding a partner by sleeping around.”

The real-world effects of body count discourse

It should go without saying, but none of these puritanical ideas are true. Studies consistently show that a person’s sexual history has no bearing on their ability to maintain a healthy, fulfilling relationship. That being said, marriages can be impacted by partners’ amount of previous partners because of cultural issues, including the false narrative that a person’s worth can be determined by how many people they’ve slept with. Ironically, and sadly, the only danger having a high body count poses on being a good partner is being so judged by your partner that it affects the whole relationship.

Even though we know these ideas aren’t true, the myth of purity has bled into mainstream dating culture, even for those who don’t believe in religion. It manifests in the anxiety many people feel about body count discussions. At the time of writing, TikTok videos under the ‘soul ties’ hashtag have been viewed over 437 million times, many of them spreading misinformation about what happens to our bodies and psyches after sex.

This pressure to conform to outdated sexual expectations has very real consequences. Even in modern dating culture, the expectation that women should suppress their sexuality remains deeply ingrained. Research shows that a significant amount of people openly admit they find a woman less attractive if she has had multiple sexual partners. And that’s just the ones willing to say it out loud.

SEE ALSO: The best dating apps and sites in May 2025

According to a sexual secrets survey of 1,500 British people by sex toy shop Lovehoney, 22 percent of people have lied to a partner about how many people they’ve had sex with. A third of Brits admit to keeping sexual secrets out of fear of judgement, and 30 percent say they’ve kept their number a secret out of embarrassment.

Even on Pure, a dating app that actively promotes sex positivity, body counts are still a point of tension. In a survey of 3,000 people, just 16 percent of women said they feel comfortable openly sharing past sexual experiences with a date, and 17 percent of men stated they find it unattractive when women have had many sexual partners or kinky experiences.

So, it’s no wonder women feel compelled to downplay their history. The silver lining: for everyone who finds it a turn-off, there are thankfully 83 percent who aren’t put off by certain body counts or wild stories.

Still, this leaves women feeling disillusioned with dating, afraid to disclose their true sexual history in case of judgement or personal attack, and ultimately leads to shame they don’t deserve to carry.

Slutshaming and sex work stigma

Nowhere is body count judgement and slutshaming more evident than in the way sex workers are treated online. It’s hard to scroll through TikTok for long without seeing a sex worker being interrogated by podcasters who seem less interested in genuine discussion and more intent on condemnation.

Take Rebecca Goodwin, an OnlyFans performer who made headlines after walking out of a podcast recording earlier this year. She later revealed she had been repeatedly berated about her career, with the hosts attempting to frame her work as morally bankrupt. Despite asking for the episode to be scrapped, clips of her trying to defend her choices flooded Instagram and TikTok, spliced with disapproving commentary. Similarly, musician Kate Nash — who joined OnlyFans to fund her next tour — was forced to justify her decision in national news segments.

This trend of scrutinising and shaming sex workers spills over into body count discourse, where women who have multiple partners are treated as if they are somehow tainted. Society continues to associate female sexual freedom with degradation, while simultaneously holding men to a completely different standard.

The backlash against sex workers is particularly apparent in the recent moral panic surrounding porn performers Lily Phillips and Bonnie Blue. Phillips set out to sleep with 100 people in a day, while Blue attempted 1,000, reigniting a debate about ‘body counts’ that quickly spiralled into outright misogyny. While some critics voiced concern over the ethics of such stunts, much of the outrage stemmed from the sheer audacity of women publicly embracing their sexuality. The reaction split into two camps: one expressing concern over the men involved and another fixating on the idea that women having too much sex is inherently wrong.

This kind of reaction, unfortunately, isn’t surprising. Slutshaming is often about power and control, according to Erica Smith, founder of the Purity Culture Dropout Program, which helps people unlearn internalised shame. She tells Mashable, “Often a person will slutshame someone because they think that person needs to be put in their place.”

The deep-rooted stigma surrounding sex work has long been used to punish women for any sexual behaviour that isn’t seen as perfectly pure. If a woman’s number is ‘too high’, she is treated as though she has crossed some invisible threshold into territory reserved for sex workers, who are already relentlessly judged and vilified.

Of course, the idea that women's value disintegrates with each person they sleep with completely disregards consent, sexual agency, and the fact that women don’t exist purely to be chosen by men. What’s even more insidious is how this rhetoric is framed as ‘helpful advice’ rather than what it actually is: old-fashioned misogyny, dressed up in modern aesthetics.

Slutshaming is also about deflection. “They may not be happy with their own sex lives, and it’s hard for them to see someone enjoying themselves freely,” Smith says. Instead of embracing sex positivity, some people choose to dismiss, belittle, and even actively suppress it.

At the heart of the body count debate is a fundamental misunderstanding of human sexuality. The idea that a single number can define someone’s character, their capacity for love, or their ability to commit is not just ridiculous; it’s dangerous.

Sexuality isn’t a fixed formula. Some people have had many partners, others have had very few, and neither experience is inherently better or worse. Studies consistently show that a person’s sexual history has no bearing on their ability to maintain a healthy, fulfilling relationship. So instead of 'what's your body count', the real question should be: why are we still measuring a person’s worth this way?

YouTube will show ads at peak points of videos

Mashable - Thu, 05/15/2025 - 06:28

YouTube will now show ads at the "peak" moment of videos, in a move right out of cliffhanger TV territory.

Announced Wednesday during the company's Upfront presentation, Peak Points is a new feature that uses Google's Gemini AI to identify "the most meaningful, or 'peak,' moments" to drop ads into YouTube videos.

SEE ALSO: YouTube is testing AI Overviews in search results

The idea behind the feature is YouTube connecting brands with the spot in videos "where audiences are the most engaged" and in doing so, allow creators to make more money from ads. These will likely be the most emotional, dramatic, and interesting parts of videos, identified by Gemini by crunching user viewing data. Hilariously, YouTube's blog post uses the example of a marriage proposal video, highlighting a "targeted moment" right before a suggested ad window. Can't wait for an ad right after that teary "yes."

It's not a surprising move, by any means, considering YouTube's dominance in the streaming market and its reliance on advertising as company and creator revenue. The platform has consistently bested industry leaders like Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+ as the top-watched streaming service on TVs globally. YouTube also takes the crown for livestreaming, with YouTube Live dominating competitors TikTok and Twitch.

And where there's audience, there's marketing.
