Addressing the disparities in assistive device access among the 48 million Americans with hearing loss, the FCC has ruled that all "mobile handsets" (read: smartphones) must be compatible with hearing aids.
"Americans with hearing loss will no longer be limited in their choice of technologies, features, and prices available in the mobile handset marketplace," wrote the FCC.
The rule was announced on Oct. 17 following years of deliberation by the organization's Hearing Aid Compatibility Task Force, established after the FCC's 2016 mandate on improve hearing aid compatibility. It also includes new requirements for Bluetooth coupling (a common connection option for modern hearing aids), intended to prevent manufacturers from establishing proprietary standards that limit connection options.
SEE ALSO: 'A powerful new tool': A disabled advocate on Apple's FDA-approved hearing aidsDevices that meet the current FCC standards must be simply labelled as "hearing aid-compatible," and are rated according to two modes of connection on a scale of one to four. The "M" rating refers to hearing aids in acoustic mode, a setting that amplifies all signals and reduces ambient noise, with devices rated based on ability to reduce interference. The "T" rating refers to "inductive coupling mode," which uses only audio signal-based magnetic fields to make sounds, with devices containing an internal telecoil that generates signals. Devices have to rate as "M3" and "T3" or higher to be approved.
Under revised rules, devices will have the same labeling but additional information on Bluetooth and telecoil requirements, as well as volume limit controls.
In September, the FDA approved the first over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software, designed by Apple to turn its Airpods Pro 2 into assistive amplification devices for users with mild to moderate hearing loss. The organization had previously approved OTC hearing aid sales in 2022 — a historic precedent that expanded user access in a previously expensive market.
U.S. regulators are investigating Tesla over its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software.
On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Defects announced that it was investigating Elon Musk's EV car company over "failure of the system engineering controls to react appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions."
According to the NHTSA, there have been four reported and identified incidents where a Tesla vehicle crashed when it was "entering an area of reduced roadway visibility conditions with FSD -Beta or FSD -Supervised (collectively, FSD) engaged." The reduced roadway visibility was attributed to common issues such as sun glare, fog, or airborne dust.
Out of these four incidents, one resulted in a death after the Tesla vehicle fatally hit a pedestrian. There was also a reported injury in one of the other incidents.
SEE ALSO: Tesla issues recall for 9,100 Model X cars, but this one is a bit more serious Tesla's Full-Self Driving investigationThe NHTSA says it will conduct a "preliminary evaluation" to assess a number of factors concerning Tesla's Full-Self Driving software.
Regulators will be looking into FSD’s ability to both detect and respond appropriately to situations where reduced roadway visibility conditions are present. They will also look into whether there are similar additional FSD crashes that occurred where reduced roadway visibility conditions were present and if they played a role in the occurrence of the accident.
The NHTSA will assess if any updates from Tesla affected FSD performance in reduced roadway visibility conditions and if Tesla assessed the safety impacts with those updates.
What Tesla models are involved in the investigation? The NHTSA says it is looking at 2016-2024 Model S and X, 2017-2024 Model 3, 2020-2024 Model Y, and 2023-2024 Cybertruck equipped with FSD.

We're over a week past Amazon's Prime Day and still over a month away from Black Friday, but that doesn't mean there aren't any good deals to shop. We did a little digging and rounded up a few deals from top brands like LG and Samsung to kick off your weekend.
Here are our top picks for the best Amazon deals of the day on Oct. 18. If none of these catch your attention, take a look back at our picks from Oct. 16 and Oct. 17. Many of those are still live, like a record-low on the Sony ULT Wear headphones and a $300 price drop on the M3 Pro MacBook Pro.
Our top pick LG CordZero All-in-One Auto Empty cordless vacuum $600.62 at AmazonWhen Mashable's resident vacuum connoisseur Leah Stodart tested LG's CordZero All-in-One she was blown away, claiming the $1,000 price tag is surprisingly justified. A newer version has now taken its place with even better battery life (200 hours versus 120) and the same impressive suction, smooth maneuverability, streamlined multi-step cleaning, and game-changing auto-empty station. And though the initial sticker shock can be hard to get past, the sale price is much more palatable. Snag it on sale for only $600 instead of $1,000 as of Oct. 18. That's 40% in savings and about $150 cheaper than it currently is on LG's own website.
Opens in a new window Credit: Samsung Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (512GB, Unlocked) ¤1,579.00 at AmazonA $2,000 phone seems extreme — even if it is the impressive Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. So when we see a discount, we have to highlight it. As of Oct. 18, a 512GB, unlocked Z Fold 6 is down to $1,579 at Amazon — that's not only a 22% discount, but also knocks it down to $20 cheaper than the 256GB version. Keeping the same winning formula from the Z Fold 5 when it comes to fundamentals — cameras, battery capacity, and memory — the Z Fold 6 adds just a few tweaks and extras to make it even better. That includes a thinner, wider, and brighter display with enhanced resolution, a boost in Snapdragon power, and a boat load of AI-powered tools from the Galaxy AI suite.
Fitbit Google Ace LTE kids smartwatch $179.95 at AmazonReleased this past spring, Google's Fitbit Ace LTE was made just for kids. On the little one's side of things, they can play games throughout the day that help them get active and encourage movement and play, swapping screen time for physical activity. On the parent's side, they can keep tabs on their kids by calling, texting, and voice messaging, seeing real-time locations, controlling the contact list, and restricting game access during specific times (school, homework, etc.). It's regularly $229.95, but Amazon has it on sale for only $179.95 as of Oct. 18. That's 22% in savings and about $10 shy from its lowest price ever.
Opens in a new window Credit: Samsung Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor ¤949.99 at AmazonWhen our friends at PCMag (also owned by Ziff Davis) tested the 49-inch Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor, it left quite an impression. It earned a coveted Editors' Choice award and a spot on PCMag's Best of the Year list for 2023. "It's pricey, but the slim, feature-rich Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is a feast for the eyes and the ultrawide monitor to beat for immersive PC gaming," reviewer Zackery Cuevas wrote. Usually $1,599.99, the Odyssey OLED G93SC is down to just $949.99 at Amazon. Still a splurge, the feature-rich monitor is a little more wallet-friendly at 41% off. This version is just a step down from the model tested by PCMag (no gaming hub or smart TV capabilities), but it's also about $450 more affordable.

If you've gotten used to where Google Maps displays weather information, I have bad news for you.
Google is planning on slightly tweaking the Google Maps mobile app by putting weather somewhere else, per 9to5Google. Weather has only been part of the Maps experience for less than a year and, until this change, it has sat in the upper left hand corner of the map display as you scroll around looking for a place to get lunch. Once the change goes through (it's only visible in beta versions of the app right now), Google is moving weather to the module on the bottom of the screen.
SEE ALSO: Google Maps is cracking down on fake business reviews Weather sits here for now, but probably not for much longer. Credit: Screenshot: GoogleThis change comes only a couple of months after Google Maps on iOS got a somewhat major redesign, streamlining the number of tabs on the bottom of the screen from five to three. Given that weather has only been included in Google Maps for months instead of years, the change is unlikely to ruin anyone's day, but it is worth knowing about so you can prepare for it.
You wouldn't want to be rained out on the way to lunch, right?
It looks like even more AI is going to be trained on your shitposts on X.
X announced back in July that it would use users posts to train X's AI chatbot Grok, but on Wednesday, the social network updated its Privacy Policy to allow third parties to train their AI models on X data, too.
In the third section of the Privacy Policy, X writes that "depending on your settings, or if you decide to share your data, we may share or disclose your information with third parties."
SEE ALSO: Meta is using your posts to train AI. It's not easy to opt out."If you do not opt out, in some instances the recipients of the information may use it for their own independent purposes in addition to those stated in X’s Privacy Policy, including, for example, to train their artificial intelligence models, whether generative or otherwise," the policy reads.
If you haven't already opted out of allowing X to train Grok on your posts, you can still do that. The new policy doesn't go into effect until November 15, 2024, and it doesn't look like there's any way to block X from allowing third parties to train their AI on your posts just yet. God willing, you'll be able to do this once it does go into effect.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour makes its return stateside tonight (Oct. 18) in Miami and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) sees it as an opportunity to encourage youth voter turnout in battleground states like Florida!!!
SEE ALSO: Swifties for Kamala: How Taylor Swift fans are creating a new blueprint for political organizingIt's launching a Taylor Swift-themed Snapchat filter in battlegrounds states reading, "I'm in my voting era" followed by "Be fearless for..." Users complete the phrase by tapping through key issues like reproductive rights, climate action, racial justice, and student debt relief and selecting whichever resonates. It also directs users to IWillVote.com, the Democratic Party's flagship voter education website, to learn how to cast their ballot in the upcoming election.
"There are folks from all over the country heading to Miami for the Taylor Swift concert, but also fans from all over the country who will be tuning into it live. We wanted to capitalize on that moment and be creative in the ways that we're reaching some key voters — like young people, women, and the LGBTQ community — to talk to them about the issues that are going to matter most in this election," Rosemary Boeglin, DNC communications director, told Mashable. "You'll see that the Snapchat filter not only directs users to IWillVote.com, but it has them engage on the issues."
Additionally, the DNC is placing ads on a boat near Swift's concert venue and on billboards across Miami that read, "I'm in my Kamala Era" and "A new way forward...Ready for it?" The ads also direct viewers to IWillVote.com.
This is the first Snapchat filter the DNC has launched this election cycle. It's part of its strategy aimed at meeting young voters where they are in a fractured media environment.
According to Snapchat, it has more than 100 million users in the United States, around 80 percent of whom are at least 18 years old and eligible to vote. It has a higher percentage of users under 30 than other major social media platforms, according to the New York Times. The paper reported the Harris-Walz campaign has spent $5.3 million on Snapchat campaign ads so far, while the Trump campaign has yet to buy a single Snapchat ad.
This Snapchat campaign comes after the pop star endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in an Instagram post after the Presidential debate. To her 284 million followers she wrote, "I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them." The custom voter registration link she posted on her Instagram story that same night saw 405,999 visitors.
Also timed to Swift's Miami concert is Swifties for Kamala's You're Not Alone Kid friendship bracelet campaign. The grassroots organization of Swift fans is distributing Harris-themed friendship bracelets across the U.S. with a QR code directing the recipients to voting information.
