If you're reading this, you're looking for a little help playing Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game.

Strands requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

This $400 mental health pet companion is powered by AI

Mashable - Sun, 10/13/2024 - 13:53

For the 90s and 2000s kids who had an unhealthy attachment to FurReal Friends or Tomagotchis, this extremely cute pet robot wants to be the answer to your adult stress — If you have a couple hundred dollars lying around.

The latest of AI pet companions, Moflin is a fuzzy and featureless robot pet advertised not as a toy, but as a mental health companion. The ball of fluff — a lot like a limbless guinea pig or show-stealing Ghibli creature — wriggles around and makes noises just like common life-like pet toys already in stores. But its AI brain is designed to shift its mood depending on the situation, and even recognize and form attachments to its human "caregivers."

Tweet may have been deleted

It will also run its prospective adopters¥59,400, or $398. Plus an optional $44 annual repair service called Club Moflin.

The AI-powered plushie first debuted at CES in 2021, billed by its developer Vanguard Industries as a pet robot with emotional capabilities, able to intuitively learn from its handlers to offer companionship. Now in partnership with the tech manufacturing giant Casio, the fuzzy pet has finally gone to market.

Moflin owners have to access an app to see their pet's emotional state, which reflects and responds to the human's own mood and care. Each robot also has its own distinct personality, according to the company, but all of them enjoy "snuggling." They even recharge in their own little bed. A quick YouTube search for Moflin shows owners dressing them up in tiny clothes, driving them around in baskets, and tucking them in under fuzzy blankets.

Moflin is currently up as a preorder and will be available for purchase on Nov. 7 for customers in Japan. Casio has yet to announce a wider release.

The 'Ready or Not' sequel is officially happening

Samara Weaving stans, the time has come. Ready or Not 2 is officially a go.

The 2019 horror film's star and creative heads are set to return for a follow-up with Searchlight pictures after years of rumors (and fan pleading), according to the Hollywood Reporter. The filmmakers didn't unveil any details on how the next film will revisit Weaving's iconic bloody bride, however.

The first Ready or Not — featuring a killer cult-like family hunting Weaving's gun-wielding newlywed character across their eerie estate — was a surprising hit, making more than $57 million worldwide. The now series is helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of production company Radio Silence, also behind the rebooted Scream sequels and this year's vampire ballerina flick Abigail.

"I’m all in," Weaving told ComicBook.com about the team's eagerness for the follow-up film. "I don’t know if we’ve had our blood handshake, but pretty much. We’ve done the spit handshake, but we haven’t cut each other’s hands and rubbed our blood together."

Production and principal photography dates haven't yet been announced.

SpaceX's successful Starship flight grabbed by giant mech arms

Mashable - Sun, 10/13/2024 - 10:10

SpaceX's fifth Starship test launch — the reusable transportation key to Elon Musk's space goals — has made a successful journey up to orbit and back. Most impressive: It was the first use of the company's futuristic "mechazilla" tech to get its massive vehicle back on the landing pad.

The rocket system took off from the private South Texas launchpad around 8:25 a.m. ET and its booster, known as Super Heavy, was falling gracefully back to Earth only a few minutes later. As SpaceX's metal arms encircled the 33-engine booster, Kate Tice, quality systems engineering senior manager and broadcast host, exclaimed: “This is absolutely insane!”

The structure, referred to as "chopsticks" by the space company, acts like a giant pincer to safely catch the booster in its return, rather than previously-tested water landings.

"By continuing to push our hardware in a flight environment, and doing so as safely and frequently as possible," SpaceX wrote on X, "we’ll rapidly bring Starship online and revolutionize humanity’s ability to access space."

The return also featured deafening sonic booms, hot pink plasma, and live views of space via Starlink internet satellites.

By 9:30 a.m. ET, the Starship practiced its "bellyflop" landing maneuver, which involves a horizontal free fall and a quick vertical reorientation to control its descent. A few minutes later it was back earth-side, making a dramatic planned splashdown in the Indian Ocean — the company is not likely to recover the ship from the water.

SpaceX's success today comes amid a history of failed attempts and larger criticism of its "move fast, break things" ethos. Following a less showy third flight that saw the ship destroyed in its journey back to Earth, June's fourth Starship test launch experimented with a more controlled, soft booster landing in the water and more practice of the "bellyflopping" descent, which Musk likens to "skydiving."

NASA plans to utilize the Starship rocket system to ferry astronauts on its Artemis III and IV missions, under a $4.2 billion contract with the Musk company.
