Online experts you can trust for Hurricane Milton info

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 17:46

Hurricane Milton is the monster storm churning through the Gulf of Mexico, and is headed toward the populated Tampa Bay region of Florida. Numerous weather experts are watching the major hurricane closely, sharing real-time updates about what's being forecast as possibly the worst storm to strike Tampa in a century.

The wind and storm surge predictions are so dire that both Tampa mayor Jane Castor and President Joe Biden are urging residents in evacuation zones to flee, or face imminent death.

But finding accurate information online about Milton's path and landfall isn't easy. Conspiracy theories and misinformation about the hurricane are rife. The situation is so bad that the White House's new Reddit account will start debunking bad information circulating about Milton and Hurricane Helene, which tore through parts of Florida and the southeast just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, bona fide weather experts are worn out by untrained posters and commenters who think they know a thing or two about tropical cyclones.

To help you filter out the falsehoods, we've assembled a list of trusted weather experts on X/Twitter who've been tracking Milton. Of course, accounts run by the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service, federal agencies tasked specifically with updating the public around the clock, are also trustworthy.

Now, here are top weather experts to follow for accurate information, presented in alphabetical order:

Whether you're rocking with Sabrina Carpenter or thrashing to Dimmu Borgir, music connects us all. And if you're going to listen to your favorite tunes, better make sure you're doing so with a great pair of headphones. If you're ready to bring home some that actually offer decent sound quality, comfort, and some great colors to boot, you're going to want to take advantage of this Prime Day deal.

SEE ALSO: Live Blog: The latest news on October Prime Day 2024

As of Oct. 8, the Beats Studio Pro x Kim Kardashian headphones are on sale for $189.99, down from their usual price of $349.95. That's $80 off their previous sale price in September, so if you chose to skip out on them last month, now's the best time to go ahead and lock in your purchase.

This special edition of the fan-favorite Beats Studio Pro headphones comes in three different hues: dune, moon, and earth, all of which are inspired by Kim's favorite colors (which you'll see all over her house). The color makeover hasn't changed what's under the hood, however, and these are excellent options if you need a new daily driver in terms of audio.

The headphones boast powerful 40mm drivers for booming sound as well as active noise cancellation and transparency mode so you can hear what's going on around you. Plus, they'll get you up to 40 hours of listening time before they need to be charged. Just 10 minutes can boost them up to four hours' power if you're in a pinch.

This deal likely won't last long as Prime Day wears on, so be sure and grab yours while you still can.

From one book lover to another, these are 13 of the best Kindle book deals live for October Prime Day

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 16:48

Amazon sales like Prime Big Deal Days are one of the best times to buy a Kindle on the cheap, but they can also be a great time to pick up e-books.

For the first day of the two-day event that is Prime Big Deal Days, Amazon has marked down tons of e-books, from self help to fiction and children's books, for prices as low as $1.99.

SEE ALSO: We tried every Amazon Kindle to find the best for every reader — just in time for Prime Day

The sheer number of books Amazon marked down means you'll likely have to do a little digging to find what you want to read — but to make your job easier, we put together a list of 13 of the best Kindle book deals available so far. (As a note, these markdowns are in comparison to the regular print prices of these books). Check them out below, and be sure to check out everything else on sale during Prime Big Deal Days and follow along with our live blog.

Obviously, taste in books is very personal, but for anyone out there who likes decade-spanning series about the complexities of female friendship, the Neapolitan novels fit the bill. You've probably seen this book recommended before, but I have to add my endorsement. When I finally picked up this series earlier this summer, I found myself unable to read anything else until I finished all four books — currently, my friend who I lent the first book is in the same cycle (and for anyone who's read the series, yes, we do text about how much we hate Nino).

Basically, if you've read or are planning on reading the first one, I'm willing to bet you'll be in need of the fourth one at some point — might as well get it for $3.99. And when you're done reading the books, you can check out the show.

I tested (and loved) an Ooni pizza oven — this high-end one is on sale for October Prime Day

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 16:41

Ooni's Karu 16 multi-fuel outdoor pizza oven — one of its premium offerings — is priced at $519.20 for Amazon's Prime Day. While that's still a hefty chunk of change for a pizza oven, that represents a 35% drop from its list price of $799. For more Prime Day, check out our massive list of the best deals and our live blog that's being updated with the latest news and deals.

The Karu 16 multi-fuel model is, well, what you would expect — a pizza oven that can run on multiple fuels. You're able to use wood, charcoal, or gas with the oven, which is a helpful trick. I've tested a wood-pellet-fueled Ooni in the past and there's a bit of a learning curve in getting it right. The convenience of the gas-powered option is a nice feature.

Sure, the Karu 16 is one of the bigger and more expensive models on the market, but if you're going to spring for it, now may be the time.

Plane flies into Hurricane Milton, captures turbulent footage

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 16:12

Flying through the most powerful hurricanes is part of the job.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hurricane Hunters — brazen pilots and storm researchers — journey through storms like Florida-bound Hurricane Milton and work as a high-altitude weather station. They collect invaluable data about storms which are fed to forecasters and their computer models, allowing for the most informed predictions. And they're often impressively accurate.

NOAA posted footage of a turbulent atmospheric ride through Milton on Oct. 8. You can watch it below.

"Bumpy ride into Hurricane #Milton on @NOAA WP-3D Orion #NOAA43 'Miss Piggy' to collect data to help improve the forecast and support hurricane research," the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center posted online.

SEE ALSO: Hurricane Milton: See Tampa Bay webcams live as the storm approaches

"Miss Piggy" is a four-engine turboprop aircraft — you can see the propellers outside the window — designed to fly for some eight to 10 hours while releasing "dropwindsondes" into the storm. These tubes relay back information about a tropical storm's wind direction, wind speed, pressure, and beyond.

"Pardon my Appalachian hoots and hollers but this is right up there with the Ian flight from two years ago. Floor panels came up. Dropsondes broke. A mess in the cabin," NOAA Hurricane Hunter engineer Nick Underwood wrote online.

"All that turbulence and we still get the dropsonde out to collect data. This is the job. Important work," he added.

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on the central coast of west Florida on Wednesday night.

Though a number of factors influence the formation of strong hurricanes (opposing winds that can break apart storms, moist or dry air, etc.), a vital influence is warm sea surface temperatures of over 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). Warm oceans act as jet fuel for hurricanes, storm scientists explain. That's because warmer oceans fuel tropical storms as more water naturally evaporates into the air, giving storms energy and moisture to intensify. Crucially, the oceans, which absorb most of the heat created by burning fossil fuels, are relentlessly warming.

Today, Atlantic hurricanes are already twice as likely to develop from a milder storm into a major hurricane.

Hurricane Milton questions? Check out the White House's new Reddit page.

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 15:59

The White House is turning to Redditors to help disseminate important information and correct misinformation, as it officially launches its own Reddit account.

The page's first matter of business: Bolstering the Biden administration's Hurricane Milton response, fact-checking conspiracies about the back-to-back climate disasters of Helene and Milton, and connecting storm victims with the support they need. The Reddit page will include updates on federal actions, resources, and state-specific subs for those in affected areas, the Hill reported.

The page will share posts from other vetted threads containing pertinent and reliable information as the hurricane progresses.

Hurricane Milton: See Florida coast webcams live as the storm approaches

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 15:25

After "explosively intensifying," Hurricane Milton is now growing into a larger storm.

The Florida-bound cyclone is projected to hit the central coast of west Florida as a major hurricane, and for those interested in following or better understanding the potentially historic impacts, you can watch the livestreams below (unless they are dismantled by winds or storm surge).

The hurricane is tracking towards the Tampa region, but its wind field is expansive, meaning high winds and storm surge will impact other sections of the Florida Peninsula. Milton is expected to make landfall late Wednesday.

"If the storm stays on the current track, it will be the worst storm to impact the Tampa area in over 100 years," the National Weather Service's Tampa Bay office posted online.

When is the next Prime Day? Here's how long you'll have to wait for more deals.

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 13:55

We're in the thick of Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days event — unofficially known as October Prime Day. You may be wondering if you should pull the trigger on deals you've been eyeing or wait for the next Prime event. We're here to lay out all the details to help you decide, including when to expect the next Prime Day.

When is the next Prime Day?

While it may seem like Amazon is holding Prime events every other month, Prime Day technically only happens once a year in the summer. However, Amazon has also been holding another major sale event the past three years in the fall (called Prime Big Deal days in 2024). For all intents and purposes, it's essentially Prime Day 2. Running Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 this year, there's still an entire day to shop Prime Day deals.

Once the Prime Big Deal Days event concludes at 3:01 a.m. ET (12:01 a.m. PT) on Oct. 9, you'll have to wait until next summer for another Prime-centric shopping event. The next Prime Day likely won't take place until July 2025 (unless, of course, Amazon decides to throw us all a curveball).

In 2022, 2023, and 2024, Prime Day was held in the second full week of July in the Tuesday-Wednesday slot. If we assume Amazon will stick with a similar schedule as the past few years, the next Prime Day will probably fall on July 15 and 16 in 2025.

In the meantime, however, Amazon's Black Friday event is also a beast of its own kind. We often see record-low prices that either match or beat Prime Day prices and stick around for much of November. Mark your calendars now for Black Friday 2024, which falls on Nov. 29, and Cyber Monday, which will take place on Dec. 2.

What are the best October Prime Day deals?

If you're wondering about the next Prime Day because you aren't sure whether the deals during Prime Big Deal Days 2024 are worth it, just know that there are lots of record-low prices on top brands like Apple, Samsung, Amazon Echo, and more. Meta promises a fix to Threads' engagement bait problem

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 13:52

Threads is notorious for engagement bait, and Meta knows it. And they're going to try to fix it, too — allegedly.

This revelation came as many updates on Threads do: through a conversation on the app itself.

Two days ago, a Threads user posted a fake image of an old lady wearing a miniskirt on the subway.

"Don't tell me that it's okay to wear mini-skirts after 50! There should be a point when we acknowledge our age and start dressing accordingly, right? Or am I the only one who feels this way?" the poster wrote.

This is, obviously, engagement bait, a post specifically designed not to say something interesting but to get other people to interact with it. And it worked: The post has over 4,400 likes, 20,200 replies, 316 reposts, and was sent 202 times. It's just one example of a myriad of engagement bait posts created by the account, and it isn't the only account doing it.

In response to the post, Dave Lee, a tech columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, said, "You’d think Meta would have learned the lesson of 'engagement = good' after all these years."

Another user responded to Lee, pointing out that Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Meta, which owns Threads, said in an interview with Verge earlier this year that "the fundamental defining aspect of [Twitter's] format is that when you make a post, the comments aren't subordinate to the post. The comments are kind of at a peer level." To the user, this indicated that Zuckerberg "explicitly said he believes more comments = better content."

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, and a pretty consistent replier, responded to the users' post.

"Not all comments or replies are good. Mark's comment is more about the Twitter pioneering a format where the reply can be elevated, which is a good thing, but that doesn't mean that every reply should be," Mosseri posted.

He added that they have "seen an increase in engagement-bait on Threads and we're working to get it under control. More to come."

M4 MacBook Pro: Another YouTuber claims to have gotten his hands on one

Mashable - Tue, 10/08/2024 - 13:26

The leaked M4 Macbook Pro saga just keeps getting worse for Apple.

What started with one Russian YouTuber showing off the yet-to-be-announced laptop has now escalated with a second video from a channel dubbed Romancev768. His unboxing may be less thorough, but it’s another piece of evidence fueling the growing speculation that Apple’s next-gen hardware is on the horizon. This follows claims from just last week on X (formerly Twitter) that someone was trying to flip an M4 MacBook Pro on Facebook Marketplace.

Apple, of course, hasn’t announced these laptops yet. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, an Apple analyst and leaker, says late October is the target date for an announcement, which leaves plenty of room for doubt. Are these actual M4 models or just elaborate fakes?

TechCrunch points out that both unboxings feature the same model numbers and packaging, hinting they could either be from a leaked batch of real devices — or the same knockoff unit is being passed around the Russian tech scene for clicks. Either way, it’s not exactly the product rollout Apple had in mind.

Gurman’s Power On newsletter reports that Apple is set to launch new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by M4 chips, which debuted in the iPad Pro earlier this year. The lineup also includes a redesigned Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro chips, a refreshed iMac with M4, and a new iPad mini. Expect these releases soon as Apple continues its M-series expansion.

The leaked videos show the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro with 512GB in Space Black — a color previously exclusive to the 16-inch model. It features three Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of the usual two and starts with 16GB of RAM. Under the hood, it’s powered by a 10-core variant of the new M4 chip.

How these Russian YouTubers managed to get their hands on these M4 MacBook Pros is a real mystery. Apple is prohibited from selling its products in Russia, and the model numbers suggest these laptops were meant for the U.S. market. It’s hard to believe that a security-obsessed company like Apple could lose multiple flagship laptops in an embargoed country.

For Apple's sake, let's hope these are some super well-made dupes.
