The 10 best movies of 2024 (so far!)

Mashable - Wed, 06/12/2024 - 05:00

The summer is upon us, and with it comes a time to reflect on the best cinema 2024 has had to offer so far.

Sure, there's been some flashy big releases, like the action-packed Fall Guy, the monster-stuffed Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and George Miller's spectacle-rich Fury Road prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But bonkers action alone isn't enough to make the cut, not when this year has also brought boldly outrageous reimaginings of superhero stories, daring animated features, provocative horror stories, awe-inspiring sandworm sequences, and queer cinema that's already won praise from the iconic John Waters.

At the halfway mark of 2024, what movies did make the cut for Mashable's top ten? Take a look.

Here's the 10 best movies of the year so far, and where you can watch them.

10. Chicken for Linda! "Chicken for Linda!" Credit: GKIDS

Who would have thought that a movie about making a chicken dinner would make me sob?

Such is the case with Chicken for Linda!, a vibrantly animated French film from directors Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach. The film follows eight-year-old Linda (voiced by Mélinée Leclerc) and her mother Paulette (voiced by Clotilde Hesme) on their quest to make chicken with peppers — but there's so much more to it than the deceptively simple premise might suggest. Here is a story about a mother trying to atone for hurting her daughter, a daughter trying to reconnect with her late father through the power of food, and the many madcap characters they meet along the way. Tying it all together is the film's color-blocked, hand-painted animation, a perfect representation of Linda's own childlike wonder. So tuck into Chicken for Linda!, and prepare yourself for a comforting, heartbreaking watch unlike any other animated film you'll see this year. — Belen Edwards, Entertainment Reporter

How to watch: Chicken for Linda! will be available on demand July 2. Pre-order on Apple TV now.

9. Late Night with the Devil David Dastmalchian plays an embattled talk show host in "Late Night with the Devil." Credit: IFC Films and Shudder.

If you like your horror lean and mean, you must see this '70s-set indie from writers/directors Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes (aka the Cairnes Brothers).

David Dastmalchian, a character actor who's unnerved us in The Boogeyman and Prisoners, headlines here as Jack Delroy, a talk show host who is so determined to best Johnny Carson's ratings that he invites an allegedly possessed girl to be a guest on his Halloween special. Part showbiz satire, part found-footage horror, Late Night with the Devil uses a low-fi look and keenly creepy effects to create a throwback tale of terror that is rank with fresh blood. While the film's been criticized for its use of AI, its scares are so satisfying that it earned praise from none other than the master of horror himself, Stephen King. So, take a cue from our review: "Tune in and hang on. Dastmalchian and his demon are coming for you." —Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

How to watch: Late Night with the Devil is now streaming on AMC+, and available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

8. The People's Joker Co-writer/director/star Vera Drew in "The People's Joker." Credit: Altered Innocence

There are some movies so bizarre and daring that their very existence feels like a miracle. The People's Joker is one such miracle.

Co-writer/director/star Vera Drew channels her personal trans coming-of-age story into a supervillain narrative set in a funhouse mirror version of Batman's Gotham. There, Joker the Harlequin (Drew) seeks to make a mark on a corrupted comedy scene, ruled by a literally cartoony version of Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels. With a production design crowdsourced from across the internet, The People's Joker plays like an explosive kaleidoscope of references to every Batman movie and beyond. There's a deep love of all things DC, but without the suffocating reverence that has brought on superhero fatigue. With her biting sense of humor and raw emotional revelations, Drew has constructed a supervillain tale that is as jarring as it is compelling, as peculiar as it is profound. And considering Warner Bros.' litigious looming, that she got to release this movie at all is a victory for every weirdo with an idea for fanfic greatness. — K.P.

How to watch: The People's Joker is now in theaters.

7. La Chimera Luca Gargiullo, Melchiorre Pala, Vincenzo Nemolato, Ramona Fiorini, Josh O'Connor, and Giuliano Mantovani in "La Chimera." Credit: Neon

The past and present collide in La Chimera, director Alice Rohrwacher's playful, melancholic tomb-raiding fantasy.

La Chimera stars Josh O'Connor (who's had a banner spring, between this and Challengers) as Arthur, the leader of a group of Tuscan tomb raiders (or tombaroli). Arthur has a mysterious knack for finding lost artifacts, a process Rohrwacher and cinematographer Hélène Louvart bring to life with a heavy dose of magical realism. Yet while the other tombaroli pillage tombs for money and glory, Arthur, haunted by visions of his lost love Beniamina (Yile Yara Vianello), seeks something less tangible. His quest plays out like something out of a fairy tale, filled with dreamy memories, tentative romance, and an aching longing that buries itself deep in your heart. — B.E.

How to watch: La Chimera is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

6. Hit Man Adria Arjona and Glen Powell in "Hit Man." Credit: Courtesy of Netflix

Richard Linklater and Glen Powell reunite for Hit Man, a rom-com that is killer in all sense of the word.

Powell plays Gary Johnson, a college professor whose side gig as an undercover hit man leads to an unexpected meet-cute with would-be client Madison (Andor's Adria Arjona). The pair's connection (and electrifying chemistry) sparks a delightful game of false identities, reinvention, and twisted love that toggles between hilarious, thrilling, and sexy at a moment's notice. Oh, who am I kidding; sometimes it's all three at once! — B.E.

How to watch: Hit Man is now streaming on Netflix.

5. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Tom Burke and Anya Taylor-Joy in "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." Credit: Jasin Boland / Warner Bros.

George Miller, you've done it again! The director's return to the Mad Max wasteland is nothing short of spectacular, a blistering revenge epic and work of mythology that pushes its lead character Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne, both spectacular) — and action filmmaking as a whole! — to new heights.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a prequel done right, deepening Furiosa's story from Mad Max: Fury Road without stooping to fan service-y lore bombs. Here, we'll meet new players in the wasteland, like warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth, killing it in villain mode) and stoic driver Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke), with whom Furiosa shares a compelling, if understated, romance. It's also some of the best onscreen action since Fury Road itself. Miller kicks us off with a taut chase between Furiosa's formidable mother (Charlee Fraser) and the raiders who stole Furiosa, teaching us the rules of wasteland survival and attrition with keen visual storytelling. That's just a teaser for the real showstopper: a massive attack on Immortan Joe's (Lachy Hulme) war rig, complete with aerial warfare, real-time engine repair, and a character simply known as Piss Boy. Witness him, but more importantly, witness the brilliance that is Furiosa. — B.E.

How to watch: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is now in theaters.

4. Problemista Tilda Swinton and Julio Torres with "Blue Egg on Yellow Satin" in "Problemista." Credit: A24

Saturday Night Live writer turned filmmaker Julio Torres came out swinging with his weirdly brilliant feature directorial debut, Problemista. Inspired by his own experiences as an immigrant finding New York City a place of promise, problems, and glittering trash, he wrote, directed, and starred opposite Tilda Swinton in one of the most sensational comedies of the last decade.

The story centers on Alejandro (Torres), an aspiring toymaker whose desperately seeking a sponsor for his visa when he meets art-scene critic/menace Elizabeth (Swinton). A modern fairy tale of a noble young knight and a dragon who might help him or swallow him whole, Problemista is a movie filled with surreal and wonderful imagery, imaginative jokes, and quirky performances from the likes of Isabella Rossellini, Past Lives' Greta Lee, A League of Their Own's Kelly McCormack, Hacks' Meg Stalter, Abbott Elementary's Larry Owens, and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA. This deeply humane and humorous comedy is a bizarre balm, sure to have you howling with laughter between its most biting barbs. —K.P.

How to watch: Problemista is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

3. Dune: Part Two Credit: Niko Tavernise

With 2021's Dune, director Denis Villeneuve proved he could do justice to Frank Herbert's sci-fi masterwork. Three years later, he topped himself with Dune: Part Two, a sobering epic which will surely go down in history as one of the greatest sci-fi films and sequels ever made.

Dune: Part Two continues the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who finds himself among the planet Arrakis's indigenous Fremen. There he becomes entangled in the impossible position of hoping to avenge the Harkonnens' attack on his house, while also trying to avoid a future in which he unleashes holy war upon the universe. As Dune: Part Two moves closer and closer to that violent inevitability, Villeneuve and co-writer Jon Spaihts don't shy away from the darkness of Paul's story. They build his relationship with Chani (an extraordinary Zendaya) and the Fremen into an immaculate tragedy, pitting faith against manipulation with explosive results.

On top of all this, Villeneuve fills the screen with sci-fi strangeness and wonders galore. Who can forget the H.R. Giger-esque fever dream that is Giedi Prime, or the sense of levitation that hits when Harkonnen soldiers fly across the desert? Armies of sandworms and Austin Butler's gleefully evil Feyd-Rautha only add to Dune: Part Two's excellence — now bring on Dune Messiah!*B.E.

How to watch: Dune: Part Two is now streaming on Max.

2. Love Lies Bleeding Katy O'Brian and Kristen Stewart are ruthlessly riveting in "Love Lies Bleeding." Credit: A24

Rose Glass, the writer/director who awed critics in 2020 with her stunning religious horror film Saint Maud, has blessed us with a follow-up that is as scorchingly sexy as it is deeply unsettling.

Set against a merciless desert town, Love Lies Bleeding stars Kristen Stewart as a surly loner who runs a rundown gym. Things begin to look up when a perfectly permed and righteously ripped bodybuilder (Katy O'Brian) rolls into her squalid realm. Their attraction is instant, their loyalty potentially lethal. So when they run afoul of a local kingpin (Ed Harris, wearing a mangy skullet), this noir thriller veers into a place of jaw-dropping violence and grievous vengeance, with a climax that is as outrageous as it is exhilarating. As I wrote in our review, "There are movies that grab you by the throat. There are movies that punch you in the gut. Love Lies Bleeding is both, and I fucking love it." — K.P.

How to watch: Love Lies Bleeding is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

1. Challengers Mike Faist as Art, Zendaya as Tashi, and Josh O'Connor as Patrick in "Challengers." Credit: Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures

The alluring ad campaign for Luca Guadagnino's sports drama teased a love triangle between stars Josh O'Connor, Mike Faist, and Zendaya. Yet not even the clip of that three-way kiss could prepare us for the cinematic force of nature that is Challengers.

Written by Justin Kuritzkes, Challengers centers on a dynamic love triangle between two childhood friends and a female tennis phenom whose drive to win is catching. Incredibly, the film has no actual sex scenes, though it oozes with sensuality in every tennis match, slick with sweat and adrenaline pumping thanks to Academy Award-winning composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The result is a movie that toys with its audience just as its leading lady does her boys. And — as all best-of-year-movies ought to be — Challengers only gets better and richer with every rewatch. Do as Zendaya says: See it again and then again. Challengers is a winner that'll leave you ragged and yet wanting more. — K.P.

How to watch: Challengers is now available for rent on Prime Video.

'The Acolyte' takes a parsec-leap forward for queer representation

Mashable - Wed, 06/12/2024 - 03:55

Where are all the LGBTQ people in Star Wars? They exist, but they’re on the periphery, in video games or comic books, like Juhani in Knights of the Old Republic or Doctor Aphra from the Doctor Aphra comics. The closest we’ve come in the live-action Star Wars universe to queer representation is a same-sex kiss hidden in the background of The Rise of Skywalker

Despite plenty of real-world evidence that queer people and queer animals exist all over the globe, there aren’t any queer folk in an entire galaxy? That’s absurd when you realize the live-action canon includes 11 films and six series, including The Acolyte. Mercifully, this latest Disney+ series is finally giving space to queer people in the Star Wars universe.

Episode 3 of the Acolyte is more than token representation. It’s the compelling story of a family of faith that conflicts with the Jedi way of life, leading us to question the motives of the typically magnanimous Jedi Order.

Credit: Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM Planet Brendok is a sapphic paradise

Episode 3 ushers audiences into the mysterious past of twins Mae and Osha (both played by Amandla Stenberg). Flashing back 16 years to their planet of Brendok, this episode, directed by Kogonada (After Yang), reveals their origin story, including a look at the fiery tragedy that defined both their lives, and particularly why Mae is hellbent on killing four Master Jedi.

At the start, there's a sense of serenity on Planet Brendok. Young Mae and Osha frolic through a vast, lush forest; the bond between sisters is immediately apparent. It’s not long before an exciting reveal: the twins have two moms, Mother Aniseya (Jodi Turner-Smith) and Mother Koril (Margarita Levieva). Wisely, this isn’t treated like a grand reveal, but matter-of-factly in this matriarchal society. Still, the lack of any grandness around this detail is most welcome, as Disney likes to make a big fuss over things that just wind up being a disappointment (remember LeFou, Disney’s "first openly gay character" in the live-action Beauty and the Beast?).

SEE ALSO: How one line in 'Strange World' shows Disney is finally getting queer representation right

Aniseya and Koril belong to a coven of witches, a group of women familiar with the ways of the Force but excluded from Jedi life. The reasons aren’t clear yet. But it's evident that the coven, led by Aniseya, greatly values their own traditions, and purposely avoids the Jedi, preferring to live fruitfully off grid. A potent joy infuses these early coven scenes, showing Mae and Osha live in a warm and happy community. Kogonada brings a comforting reverence to these family scenes with a warm, inviting color palette. But with that joy is an underlying fear – both Aniseya and Koril are fearful of their children getting too far out of their sight. What could possibly concern them on such a lovely planet?

The surprising answer? The Jedi. Because both Mae and Osha have the ability to use the Force, the galactic mandate requires them to be trained as Jedi. Their mothers have no intention of letting this happen. The coven has their own methods of of engaging with the Force. And Aniseya is particularly interested in teaching her children how strong they can be when they work together, unlike the typically solitary Jedi.

Credit: Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM Queerness as a metaphor on Planet Brendok

The mothers parent their daughters with a gentle yet firm hand, leading with love but acknowledging that they’re different as they’re part of an all-women community. As a family, they embrace that difference is something to celebrate, not fear. While they are loving, they recognize the rest of the world doesn’t feel the same way: "The galaxy is not a place that welcomes women like us," Aniseya tells her daughters, justifying why they live a happy, if hidden life, away from the hubbub of the Jedi authority.

This line from Aniseya, and the episode as a whole, speaks to the experience of some queer people in contemporary society. The increased visibility of queer people around the world comes with a seemingly inevitable backlash in the way of bigotry, hate crimes, and homophobic and transphobic legislation.  This is reflected in The Acolyte: On Brendok, Aniseya and Koril can love and parent as they see fit within a community that embraces and respects them. But the intruding Jedi question their faith, their customs, and even their right to care for their own children.

Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae), who begins the episode by lurking in the forest and spying on the twins, immediately asks the coven "Where’s their father?", enforcing the heteronormative structure of the Jedi.

"They have no father," Aniseya snarls back with pride. The coven is in an impossible situation: fighting the Jedi means certain death, but giving the children over to the Jedi means losing them forever.

The Jedi are determined to take Osha and Mae from their home to raise them as Jedi. They arrive at a pivotal time for the girls, who are completing a swearing-in ceremony to confirm their commitment to the coven. While Mae is excited and accepts the ritual with open arms, Osha is hesitant, longing for a life beyond the confines of her community. She dreams of being a Jedi.

This too, is a relatable queer experience – the yearning for a bigger, more exciting life where you can be accepted and embraced for who you truly are. While Osha’s mothers understand her desire to explore the galaxy, their caution comes from lived experience: They understand just how cruel the wider world can be for those who are different.

Credit: Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM Episode 3 of The Acolyte changes our perception of the Jedi

While the Force has long had an established Dark Side, the Jedi Order is responsible for maintaining a stable and prosperous universe, and has been a source of good in the world since the very beginning.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen The Jedi Order act seemingly out of character. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ashoka (who also has her own Disney+ series) was trained in the way of the Jedi. But when she was framed for a crime she didn’t commit, she was put on trial and expelled from the Jedi Order. Though she was eventually acquitted, the incident shattered her illusion of the Order’s righteousness and she no longer saw it as a force for good. After Ahsoka was offered her place back in the Jedi Order, she left to start a life of her own.

While Ahsoka’s incident was largely painted as a case of a few bad people infiltrating an otherwise great organization, The Acolyte takes things further by suggesting that the entire Jedi Order is capable of making disastrous decisions. Jedi are often fueled by the belief that what they’re doing is inherently righteous and for the greater good. An innate belief that your intentions are noble is great in theory, but there’s a hubris that blinds you from seeing the whole picture.

That’s precisely what we encounter when the four Master Jedi come to Brendok to take Mae and Osha from everything they know. The Jedi say that the twins must be trained in the way of the Jedi, as living among the coven is not the way they should be raised. There is, however, no actual justification for why this is, besides the law. The coven is their family. It’s everything they know, and Mae does not want to be anywhere near the Jedi. But this doesn’t seem to matter to them. Their faith in their Order instills in them that being a Jedi is the best way – even the only way – to properly use the Force. They’ve accepted that fact blindly, disregarding the fallout for families — and whole communities — torn apart by their influence.

The Acolyte is a bold new direction in Star Wars storytelling, building on previous suggestions in the prequel trilogy that the Jedi Order is out of touch, and in the Clone Wars that the Order can be downright malicious. Acolyte reckons with a bold idea that perhaps the Jedi aren’t always the heroes we thought they were. Using queerness to explore the nuances of good and evil and the Jedi cause only makes it more terrifying — and more impactful.

The Acolyte is now streaming on Disney+, with a new episode every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.

Elon Musk has dropped his OpenAI lawsuit with no explanation

Mashable - Wed, 06/12/2024 - 03:19

Elon Musk has dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI and its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, a mere day before a judge was set to hear the defendants' request for dismissal of the case.

Initially filed to the San Francisco Superior Court in late February, Musk's lawsuit attempted to force OpenAI to stop operating as a for-profit entity, as well as release its AI research and technology to the public. This Tuesday he withdrew the case, offering no explanation as to why. The withdrawal was done without prejudice, meaning Musk could conceivably refile the lawsuit at a later date, though he'll probably want to secure stronger evidence to support his claims before he does.

Musk's lawsuit accused OpenAI of breach of contract, claiming that there was a "Founding Agreement" that its artificial general intelligence would be open source and the company would be run as a non-profit "for the benefit of humanity."

Though Musk did not produce any physical signed document detailing such terms, the lawsuit attempted to argue that there was a general understanding between him, Altman, and Brockman as to how OpenAI would operate. Musk was a multi-million dollar investor in OpenAI and a previous member of its board of directors.

Unfortunately for Musk, absent an actual contract for OpenAI to allegedly breach, his lawsuit appeared largely based on vibes.

In response to Musk's allegations, OpenAI stated that no such founding agreement ever existed. The company also produced fairly damning emails which show Musk not only knew of its plans to become proprietary and for-profit, but actually agreed with them. In fact, Musk reportedly stated that OpenAI had no possibility for success unless it raised several billion dollars per annum — a funding conundrum he was willing to solve in exchange for complete control.

"As we discussed a for-profit structure in order to further the mission, Elon wanted us to merge with Tesla or he wanted full control," wrote OpenAI. "When he left [OpenAI] in late February 2018, he told our team he was supportive of us finding our own path to raising billions of dollars."

OpenAI subsequently found funding elsewhere, eventually accepting a $10 billion investment from Microsoft, while Musk chose to funnel his cash into his own AI chatbot Grok. Judging by his lawsuit, it seems as though Musk hoped access to OpenAI's research would give Grok a bit of a boost.

Though Musk has now decided to drop the lawsuit, his beef with OpenAI appears far from over. Earlier this week the billionaire took to Twitter/X to rage against its newly announced partnership with Apple, saying that integrating OpenAI into iOS is "an unacceptable security violation."

Neither Apple nor OpenAI have indicated any plans for such integration, and have in fact made it clear that each will be kept separate and walled off. That hasn't stopped Musk from declaring that he'll ban Apple devices at his companies if they do what he's imagining.

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Elon Musk Withdraws His Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Sam Altman

After move by Nintendo, no major gaming consoles now include Twitter / X integration

Mashable - Tue, 06/11/2024 - 16:36

Before Elon Musk acquired Twitter in late 2022, the social media platform had a robust developer ecosystem filled with third-party companies integrating it into their own products. Musk's Twitter, now known as X, is a vastly different environment for developers.

Case in point: As of Monday, June 10, 2024, all of the major video game consoles – Nintendo Switch, Sony Playstation, and Microsoft Xbox – have officially removed X / Twitter integrations from their products.

X loses major gaming companies

In April 2023, Microsoft was the first video game console manufacturer to announce that it was removing its X integration from Xbox consoles.

In November of that same year, Sony followed suit and announced that it would also be removing X integration from its Playstation consoles.

Since then, Nintendo has had the only major video game console on the market with X integration. But, just last month, Nintendo announced that it too had decided to drop its X integration from its Switch console.

On Monday, June 10, Nintendo officially removed its X integrations in its Nintendo Switch 18.1.0 update.

X integrations removed from Nintendo Switch

"The following updates were made for the discontinuation of X (formerly Twitter) integration," Nintendo wrote in the update notes, listing what has been removed.

According to Nintendo, in removing the X integration, users will no longer be able to choose the "Post to Twitter" option when sharing from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME menu. The option to link to X under "Posting to Social Media" in the User Settings menu has also been removed.

Finally, a specific X integration for the game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which allowed users to post screenshots from their gameplay directly to X has been removed as well.

Why did Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft drop X?

Neither Nintendo, Sony, nor Microsoft has explicitly stated why they removed X integrations. However, these companies all moved to drop X support from their consoles after Musk changed up the pricing tiers for X's API access.

API access is required for these integrations to work. Before Musk acquired the company, then-Twitter provided a generous free API tier for third-parties building services that utilized the social media platform.

However, under Musk, X has made the free API tier practically useless, and started charging exorbitant fees for access to the company's usable API. Musk's new API pricing plans start at $42,000 per month for Enterprise API access, which is what companies like Nintendo would require.

Based on their customer base, it's very likely that Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony found that they'd need to pay out at least hundreds of thousands of dollars a month to X in order to simply let their users post gaming content directly from the console to social media.

Posting from the company's official @XGaming account, Musk's X claims to have worked with Nintendo regarding the integrations, but Nintendo decided to remove them anyway.

Tweet may have been deleted

"We worked together with Nintendo throughout this process to ensure API access for this integration, but ultimately it was a product decision made by Nintendo," the @XGaming post reads.

Gamers who still want to share content to X will need to save their gameplay screenshots or footage, and then transfer them to their computer or mobile device before posting to X.

Why you're seeing lime green all over the internet

Mashable - Tue, 06/11/2024 - 14:02

The color green has always been powerful, with its symbolic connection to money and jealousy. Put that all to the side, though, because anything lime green is even more powerful than before: It's brat. It's Charli xcx.

The album cover of Charli xcx's latest release, brat, has a bright lime-green background and the word "brat" in lowercase. It's pretty easy to remake with your own words — there's even a generator for it. Edits and memes have taken over X / Twitter and Instagram, with some people making it their profile pictures and others adding whatever kind of text they want.

Here are some of the best brat memes on the internet.

The deluxe album cover, which features a white background with the words "brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not," also got the meme treatment.

We're all parodying the album cover now.

But that's not the only way people are spreading the gospel of brat. Lime green, in general, has become a sort of calling card for fans.

From yap to pookie, 2024's most viral internet slang defined

Mashable - Tue, 06/11/2024 - 13:11

Each year on the internet brings an entirely new vernacular.

Last year, ijbol and "serving cunt" rose to timeline prominence, and so far, 2024 has revitalized yap and pookie. If you haven't given your life over to TikTok and X / Twitter or have someone who has in your life, it can be hard to keep up with the breakneck speed of internet slang.

But fear not: Here are some key internet vocabulary words from the year defined.

SEE ALSO: 'Pookie' is more than a pet name. TikTok's new favorite word is rooted in a rich cultural history. Failmarriage

The internet enthusiasm around Challengers, specifically the marriage between tennis player Art (Mike Faist) and his coach Tashi (Zendaya), renewed interest in a word that first gained traction online: failmarriage. Think of the marriage between Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) in HBO's Succession. The word failmarriage means precisely what it sounds like: a marriage in free fall, but the couple chooses to stay together anyway.

Tweet may have been deleted Glazing

Perhaps one of the more niche words to gain traction online, glazing refers to overhyping something. According to KnowYourMeme, it first appeared on Discord in 2021 before becoming popular on Twitch in 2022, but it's only in the past couple of years that the term has migrated to TikTok, exposing it to a more widespread audience.

Tweet may have been deleted Pookie

Thanks to the Southern TikTok couple Campbell and Jett Puckett, the term of endearment came back in a significant way in 2024. Believe it or not, "You're looking amazing tonight, pookie" happened this year. While the term floated around on TikTok starting in 2020, Jett's endearing insistence on referring to his wife as "pookie" catapulted it into the mainstream.

While pookie is typically used as a vocative, like honey or sweetie, fandoms began using it to describe their faves. For example, these days, it's common to see someone online say, "Glen Powell is pookie." Language is constantly evolving online.

Tweet may have been deleted Yap

In 2024, you don't chitchat, gab, prattle, or blabber; you yap. Yapping refers to talking excessively or at length. Those who can't stop yapping are yappers. Those who are extremely online love to yap and self-identify as yappers. The verb initially referred to a small dog and then morphed into a verb describing the high-pitched bark of a dog, but by the 1800s, it already referred to humans talking.

Adobe to update terms of service amid backlash

Mashable - Tue, 06/11/2024 - 12:58

Adobe is updating its Terms of Use after ambiguous language sparked backlash from users about the privacy and ownership of their work.

In a blog post on Monday, the company that makes the creative software tools Photoshop, Premier, and InDesign said it would be rolling out updated language in its user terms by June 18, 2024. "At Adobe, there is no ambiguity in our stance, our commitment to our customers, and innovating responsibly in this space," wrote EVPs Scott Belsky, who oversees product, and Dana Rao, who oversees legal and policy.

Tweet may have been deleted

Belsky and Rao wrote that their company has "never trained generative AI on customer content," nor taken ownership of people's unpublished work, and that Adobe wasn't announcing an intention to do these things with the recent ToS update. It's worth noting that Adobe’s Firefly generative AI models are trained on contributions to Adobe’s stock library along with public domain data, but this is being treated as distinct from content created by users for their own personal and professional purposes.

SEE ALSO: Adobe unveils AI features for Photoshop — but not everyone is happy about it

"That said, we agree that evolving our Terms of Use to reflect our commitments to our community is the right thing to do," wrote Belsky and Rao.

Last week, a PR fiasco erupted when users were notified of Adobe's updated Terms of Use. Without clear explanation of what the changes meant, or what was changed, Adobe users assumed the worst and believed the updated terms meant drastic changes to the autonomy of their content. Specifically, users thought Adobe could now access unpublished work for training its Firefly AI models and could even assume ownership of works in progress. The updates lacked clarity and transparency during a time when generative AI tools are perceived as threatening the work and livelihoods of creatives. Swift backlash followed, including promises to abandon the platform.

But as it turns out, Adobe's updated policy that grants the company access to user content was about screening for activity that breaks the law or violates its terms. Adobe said it never intended on training its models on user content or usurping any control. Belsky and Rao also asserted that users have the choice to "not participate in its product improvement program" (sharing content for model training), that its licenses are "narrowly tailored to the activities needed" such as scanning for inappropriate or illegal behavior, and that Adobe does not scan user content stored locally on their computers.

So, all of this could have been avoided with clearer communication, but some reputational damage has likely been done.

"We recognize that trust must be earned," said Belsky and Rao, closing the post.
