Moon phase today: What the Moon will look like on May 29

Mashable - Fri, 05/29/2026 - 00:00

We're just a few nights away from the Blue Moon, so there's plenty surface features to spot on the Moon tonight. But what are they? Keep reading to find out.

What is today’s Moon phase?

As of Friday, May 29, the Moon phase is Waxing Gibbous. Tonight, 91% of the moon will be be lit up, according to NASA's Daily Moon Guide.

You don't need visual aids to be able to moon gaze, especially if its a clear night. With just your naked eye, you'll be able to spot the Mare Imbrium, Aristarchus Plateau, and the Kepler Crater. If you have binoculars you'll also be able to catch a glimpse of the Posidonius Crater, Archimedes Crater, and the Clavius Crater. If you have a telescope, you'll see the Caucasus Mountains, Descartes Highlands, and the Schiller Crater.

When is the next Full Moon?

There are two Full Moons in May, with the next due to take place on May 31.

What are Moon phases?

According to NASA, the Moon takes around 29.5 days to orbit Earth, passing through a repeating pattern of eight distinct phases. Although the same side of the Moon always faces Earth, the portion illuminated by the Sun changes as it moves around the planet. This is what creates the different shapes we see in the night sky, from thin crescents to half Moons and the full Moon. Together, these phases form the lunar cycle:

New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Today's NYT Strands hints are easy if you're an animal lover.

Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game, requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

NYT Pips hints, answers for May 29, 2026

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 22:00

Welcome to your guide to Pips, the latest game in the New York Times catalogue.

Released in August 2025, Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move on to the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity with how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

SEE ALSO: Wordle today: Answer, hints for May 29, 2026

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

  • Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

  • Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

  • Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

  • Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

  • Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

One advantage of Office Professional 2021 is the inclusiveness of software included. While newer Office editions often focus on the core essentials, this package comes with eight applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, Publisher, and Access.

That means users can handle everything from document creation and email management to database projects and business presentations without piecing together multiple software solutions. Claude Opus 4.8: Anthropic makes a more honest AI

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 15:57

Anthropic isn't ready to let regular users look at its supposedly super-powerful Claude Mythos AI model just yet. But the AI company has just released an upgrade to its flagship product, Claude Opus — now in its 4.8 version.

"It builds on Opus 4.7 with improvements across benchmarks, and is a more effective collaborator," Anthropic promised in a press release Thursday. Indeed, the benchmark numbers, below, show very minor improvements across the board.

One major improvement, allegedly, is in the area of hallucinations. Claude Opus 4.8 won't lie to users as much. "Early testers report that Opus 4.8 is more likely to flag uncertainties about its work and less likely to make unsupported claims," Anthropic said, touting the model's "honesty."

Claude Opus 4.8 has 'better judgment'

"Claude Opus 4.8 has noticeably better judgment," an engineer at Shopify, Tom Pritchard, told Anthropic. The coding version of the model "asks the right questions, catches its own mistakes, and pushes back when a plan isn't sound."

Given the increasing number of horror stories about AI agents deleting entire corporate databases, that promise may be music to the ears of vibe coders everywhere.

To please power users, Anthropic is offering a significant discount on "fast mode," where Claude will work at 2.5 times regular speed. Fast mode "is now three times cheaper than it was for previous models," the company said.

Users on Reddit weren't buying it, however. Many feared a loss of access to a more popular model, Claude Opus 4.6. "Nobody trusts the benchmark charts," wrote one redditor in summary, noting that Opus 4.7 also seemed to have some pretty good numbers when it was released.

Whether or not we can trust the benchmarks — and to be clear, Mashable hasn't independently verified these numbers — here's what Anthropic is claiming.

Credit: Anthropic How to try Claude Opus 4.8

Claude Opus 4.8 is available now via Anthropic's website, Claude.AI, as well as via the Claude API, plus Anthropic partners like Microsoft Foundry.

The new model is priced exactly the same as its predecessors, which is to say models going all the way back to Claude Opus 4.5. All of them will cost you $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.

Given that Anthropic is promising Claude Mythos within a matter of weeks, however, you may want to hang back and wait to see whether that model can be even more "honest" about its hallucinations.

Waymo introduces new vehicles: ‘Living room on wheels’

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 14:22

Autonomous robotaxi company Waymo just announced a fleet of new vehicles — the Ojai — that it describes as roomier and more accessible than its typical Jaguar I-PACE cars.

The self-driving Ojai offers “elevator-like doors,” low steps, flat floors, and a seat-integrated handle, features the Google-owned company says make it easier for riders to get in and out of the vehicle. Waymo describes the space inside the Ojai as a "living room on wheels." The Ojai interior shares some similarities with Waymo competitor Zoox, which operates a fleet of carriage-style autonomous cars.

The Ojai has three large LED screens that display routes, temperature controls, and music options, with embedded braille and screen-reader compatibility (low-vision riders have expressed an affinity for self-driving cars in a recent New York Times report).

The Ojai will feature the 6th-generation Waymo Driver tech, which the company says will enable the cars to operate more effectively in snowy conditions. Don’t look for the cars in New York or Boston, though; they will first roll out as free rides for select riders in the temperate cities of Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, before moving to Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego.

SEE ALSO: Robot, take the wheel: What you need to know about autonomous vehicles rolling out across the U.S.

Speaking of weather, Waymo recently suspended rides in San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta after some of its cars drove into floods. Still, Waymo proudly touts its safety record, recently releasing data showing that its Waymo Driver tech was involved in 92 percent fewer serious crashes than human drivers under the same conditions. Additionally, Waymo stated that its cars have a 13x lower rate of serious injury or fatal crashes than human drivers.

Fitbit users complain about forced migration to Google Health app

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 12:51

Google should be celebrating the release of the Fitbit Air this month. The new screen-less fitness tracker gives competitors like Whoop and even aspects of the Apple Watch a run for their money with a number of unique features.

Instead, Google is now dealing with backlash from some fo Fitbit's existing user base after the company retired the Fitbit app and replaced it with a new AI-focused Google Health app.

On Reddit, not all Fitbit users are happy with the change, to say the least.

"Thanks, Google, for ruining Fitbit," reads one post, which has received nearly 2,000 upvotes on the r/fitbit subreddit. "I’ve been using Fitbit for over 10 years and I canceled my premium membership today. The Google Health [app] is awful. No one asked for this. Google owes us all a refund on these watches."

On social media platforms like Reddit, some long-time Fitbit users have shared their dislike for the new Google Health user interface, which they say is less intuitive and customizable than the old Fitbit app. Others are upset that Google appears to have removed data that was previously available, like certain sleep tracking stats and in-app challenges.

And then, of course, there are complaints about the AI features. The AI coach wasn't a surprise. In fact, Google rolled out trials of these AI features in the Fitbit app prior to the migration. However, within the old Fitbit app, users had control over the AI features and could turn them off. That's not the case with the new Google Health app.

The Google Fitbit Air is a screenless fitness tracker. Credit: Google SEE ALSO: I tested the top fitness trackers for running a marathon (by running the NYC marathon)

"Beyond frustrated with the forced 'Google Health' update," reads another Reddit post with more than 1,200 upvotes. "I participated in the public preview for the new version of this app, and turned it off after a week. It was clear that Gemini was extremely poorly implemented, and the new version was not ready for public use. It appears that they have launched in exactly the same state as it was."

"Why must I now scroll through paragraphs of AI slop on every tab before I can actually see my activities and data?" the Reddit user continued.

Since Google Health's release, Fitbit users have also been bombing the app with negative reviews on Google Play.

"The overhaul of the original Fitbit app is absolutely terrible," reads one review on the Google Play store. "It forces AI on you at every turn, all the information in the app is AI-based, besides from the raw data collected by your Fitbit device. Awful app, 0/10 CANNOT recommend. Give me back the Fitbit app over this trash any day."

"Lacks most of the information that was available on Fitbit, can't track just daily activity, no stress component," reads another. "I guess I will get an Apple Watch."

For Google's part, the company does appear to realize the severity of the situation and has already responded with a roadmap to address users' issues with the app.

According to Google, it's currently working on a series of improvements and bug fixes for the Google Health app. A list of those changes can be found at the Google support site and will roll out starting this week.

The feds say a Google engineer made $1.2 million on Polymarket. He could face decades in prison.

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 11:25

Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket have an insider-trading problem. And now it seems the U.S. Department of Justice is doing something about this illegal activity.

Last month, the DOJ charged a U.S. Army soldier with profiting from Polymarket trades made using their access to classified information regarding the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.

Now, the DOJ has made another insider trading charge. This time against an engineer at Google.

According to the DOJ complaint, Google engineer Michele Spagnuolo made more than $1.2 million off of Polymarket trades based on the search giant's confidential business information.

"Today’s charges reinforce a decades-old message: corporate insiders cannot use confidential business information to turn a profit in our markets,” U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement. "As alleged, Spagnuolo violated the duties he owed to his employer and used Google’s confidential business information to make more than $1.2 million in trading profits on Polymarket. Insider trading compromises the integrity of our markets, and the American people want this greed-driven conduct investigated and prosecuted."

Spagnuolo, who has worked as a software engineer at Google for over a decade, made lucrative Polymarket trades using the alias "AlphaRaccoon," according to the complaint.

The DOJ alleges that Spagnuolo made trades based on this unreleased Google data ahead of the company's 2025 Year in Search.

The complaint alleges that between October and December 2025, Spagnuolo made multiple trades on Polymarket regarding who the “Top 5 Most Searched People on Google" would be for the year. Google didn't publicly release the Year in Search until Dec. 4, 2025. (For those curious, the top 5 most searched people on Google in 2025 were d4vd, Kendrick Lamar, Jimmy Kimmel, Tyler Robinson, and Pope Leo XIV.)

Spagnuolo, an Italian citizen living in Switzerland, is alleged to have profited over $1.2 million from these trades.

Spagnuolo is being charged with violating the Commodity Exchange Act, wire fraud, and money laundering. Each count carries anywhere between a maximum of 10 to 20 years in prison.

Oura Ring 5 arrives, and it’s 40 percent smaller than Ring 4

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 10:52

A couple of years ago, the Oura Ring 4 impressed us with its health tracking capabilities. Now, the Oura Ring 5 looks to do the same, but in a much smaller form factor.

Oura officially unveiled Ring 5 on Thursday, bringing news that the device is 40 percent smaller than the previous model, making it Oura's smallest health wearable yet. It launches on June 4, starting at $399 for basic finishes like silver and black. You can pay an extra $100 to get it in the Gold, Stealth, Brushed Silver, or Deep Rose finishes, too. There's also a standalone charging case available for $99, but you'll need to get that separately.

SEE ALSO: 5 fitness gadgets to help improve your health

If the smaller size of the ring wasn't enough of a selling point, Oura is also packaging it with a bundle of new software features that sound pretty useful for health tracking. You can use the ring to track live activity in the Oura app (for things like running and workouts), and there's a new Health Radar system that constantly monitors certain metrics in the background in case anything troubling comes up. Those metrics to start with are blood pressure monitoring and a measurement of your nighttime breathing habits.

Other odds and ends include an AI health assistant available in the Oura app, as well as new insights into GLP-1 treatments. In general, it sounds like the software offerings here are even more compelling than the size of the device itself.

You can pre-order one at Oura's site now.

Sugar Season 2 trailer teases Colin Farrell on the hunt for another missing person

Mashable - Thu, 05/28/2026 - 10:00

Despite having a twist in Season 1 so unexpected it was borderline criminal, Sugar is coming back for Season 2.

In the trailer above we see the titular John Sugar (Colin Farrell) back in sun-drenched LA for more neo noir-style missing persons investigations, this time going up against a sinister sherriff's deputy (Tony Dalton) in a race to find a man's vanished brother.

Of course, as anyone who's seen Season 1 will know, there's much, much more to Sugar than just a run-of-the-mill crime detective story.

Sugar Season 2 streams on Apple TV from June 19. Season 1 is streaming now.

I'm a bit of a Garmin fangirl. Now only have I been rocking a Garmin watch for six years, but I also bought one for both of my parents and my boyfriend. I'll always recommend them, but especially so when they're on sale. If you're in the market for a high-performance smartwatch built for fitness, one of Garmin's most impressive smartwatches is the cheapest it's ever been.

As of May 28, the Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2, 47mm) is down to just $499.99 at Amazon. That's 50% off its list price of $999.99 and, according to our favorite price-tracking tool, its best price on record. While it's not the first time we've seen the price drop this low, it is the first time this year.

Not all Garmin watches are created equal and the Epix Pro is at the higher end of the spectrum.

It features a shiny AMOLED display with a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and titanium bezel and it goes far beyond just tracking your heart rate and caloric burn. It's packed with advanced features that track everything you can imagine: pulse oxygen levels, stress, body battery, respiration, recovery time, real-time stamina, running pace, heart rate variability, running strength during ascents, endurance over time, and lots more.

You can also follow along with animated workouts or personalized training plans for your next race right from your wrist. There's even a built-in flashlight for late-night and early-morning training.

One thing about Garmin smartwatches that sets them above the rest is the battery life. The Epix Pro Sapphire Edition delivers up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and up to 30 hours in GPS mode — something Apple could only dream of.

If you want a smartwatch that can actually keep up with your fitness journey, the Garmin Epix Pro is for you. And I highly recommend grabbing it while it's half price.

Executive produced by Amy Schumer and Sarah Sarandos, Room to Move aims to destigmatize autism and not just in the world of dance. — S.C.

11. Smothered

Horror and thriller films about motherhood run the gamut from thematically subtle to bizarrely overt, and we can't get enough of them. Directed by Kevin Rahardjo and Rafki Hidayat, Indonesian film Smothered leans into the folk horror side of the subgenre by reinterpreting the West Sumatran legend of Malin Kundang. In this cautionary tale of filial piety, a man who becomes a wealthy merchant is turned to stone for shunning his mother on his return home.

In Smothered, Rio Dewanto plays Alif, a man who left home as a child to earn money for his mother but didn't return, instead establishing his family and success elsewhere. Then, an accident splinters his memories. When an elderly woman shows up claiming to be his mother, Alif doesn't recognise her. But if he turns her away, will a terrible curse will be unleashed? — S.C.

Starring: Rio Dewanto, Faradina Mufti, Vonny Anggraini, Jordan Omar, Sulthan Hamonangan, Gambit Saifullah, Nova Eliza, and Tony Merle

How to watch: Smothered begins streaming on Shudder May 29.

Among them is Max Sugar (Fred Armisen), who catches the attention of Deli Boys scene stealer Lucky (Poorna Jagannathan). If the fun of the first season somehow isn't enough to draw you back, then surely the promise of the pairing of Armisen and Jagannathan will do the trick.*B.E.

How to watch: Deli Boys Season 2 premieres May 28 on Hulu and Disney+.

7. Heel

This twisted dark comedy from 2025 centers on a dysfunctional family with a deep love of discipline. Adolescence's Stephen Graham stars as the mild-manned father named Chris, who seems polite to his new housekeeper Rina (Monika Frajczyk) — that is, until she finds the teenage boy shackled up in the basement. But wait, it's not what you might think.

Chris and his quiet wife Kathryn (Andrea Riseborough) and their 10-year-old son Jonathan (Kit Rakusen) are dedicated to making this teen called Tommy into a better person, through extreme measures. While Tommy (Anson Boon) might initially resist, a begrudging familial bond begins to build with his captors.

In my review out of TIFF, I wrote, "If you're seeking funky and fucked-up entertainment, Heel should scratch that late-night movie itch." —K.P.

Starring: Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Anson Boon, Monika Frajczyk, and Kit Rakusen

How to watch: Heel is now available for rent or purchase on Prime Video.

6. Iron Lung

Markiplier's feature film debut Iron Lung is heading home to the creator's go-to platform: YouTube. In the last few years, 36-year-old creator and streamer Mark Fischbach pivoted to filmmaking, with his first horror movie released in January to colossal theatrical success.

Written, directed, edited, and starring Fischbach, and based on David Szymanski's 2022 post-apocalyptic horror game, Iron Lung follows a space convict tasked with the mission of traversing a sea of blood, within which terror awaits. — S.C.

Starring: Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach, Caroline Kaplan, Troy Baker, Elsie Lovelock, Elle LaMont, Seán "Jacksepticeye" McLoughlin, and Isaac McKee

How to watch: Iron Lung will be available to rent or purchase on YouTube May 31.

5. Over Your Dead Body

The Lonely Island's Jorma Taccone has previously helmed such side-splitting comedies as MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Now, he's back with Over Your Dead Body, an American remake of Tommy Wirkola's 2021 horror-comedy The Trip.

Samara Weaving and Jason Segel co-star as a couple who travel to a remote cabin, theoretically to reconnect. But their dark hearts are separately planning a drastic breakup tactic: murdering their mate.*

In my review out of SXSW, I wrote, "If you're looking for a twisted good time, Over Your Dead Body will deliver. It's not radically different from its source material yet charts its own course in some compelling ways. And if your humor leans toward the dark side, you won't want to miss this." — K.P.

Starring: Samara Weaving, Jason Segel, Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and Keith Jardine

How to watch: Over Your Dead Body is available to rent or purchase on Prime Video.

4. Bring Me the Beauties

If you're ready to feel deeply uncomfortable, HBO documentary Bring Me the Beauties promises to rattle, perplex, or enrage you. Directed by Chris Smith (Fyre), the three-part series delves into the Eternal Values cult run by exploitative New York socialite Frederick von Mierers, through the experience of supermodel Hoyt Richards. In 1978, as a 16-year-old, Richards was recruited into the beauty-obsessed group by its wealthy leader, then rose to global fame in the '80s.

However, the darker side of Eternal Values would see Richards and other young professional models financially and psychologically ensnared in von Mierers' web of bogus New Age (and alien-based) dogma. But what actually happened within the Eternal Values cult? There's much to reflect on in this doc. — S.C.

How to watch: Bring Me the Beauties begins streaming on HBO Max June 1.

3. Scream 7

Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and Matthew Lillard reunited for Scream 7, marking the highest-grossing sequel this franchise has seen. But if you somehow missed how exactly Lillard is returning to the slasher film series after his character Stu Macher was killed off by a TV in Scream, we'd recommend the video below. Visiting our Say More studio, he gave the only kind of spoilers he was allowed, through telepathy.

Shenanigans aside, Scream 7 brought Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson back to the franchise and on as director. The results were a wild ride that had Sydney Prescott (Campbell) defending her teen daughter Tatum (Isabel May) from Ghostface. In my review, I cheered, "As someone who has long counted Scream as the best of the batch, I yearned for a sequel that recaptured that feeling of discovery but also shared in my affection for the first film. Scream 7 does that, paying homage without being beholden to audience expectation or constrictive lore. Incredibly, Williams gives us a hearty dose of nostalgia and Easter eggs while providing new ideas, weird reveals, and fresh chills."*K.P.

Starring: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Isabel May, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Mckenna Grace, Michelle Randolph, Asa Germann, Celeste O'Connor, Sam Rechner, Ethan Embry, Timothy Simons, and Mark Consuelos

How to watch: Scream 7 begins streaming on Paramount+ May 28.

2. The Moment

Charli XCX offers a mockumentary that explores her Brat Summer moment through a thin, crackling sheen of neon-green comedy. The plot follows Charli from promo demands to tour prep to ultra-exclusive spas and shattering personal meltdowns. While she and her trusted creative director, Celeste (Hailey Benton Gates), have a pulsing nightclub vision for the Brat tour, a ever-smiling documentarian named Johannes (Alexander Skarsgård) pressures for a more mainstream vision that'll appeal to "dads."

In my review out of Sundance, I cheered, "Rather than broadly skewering the rich and famous, The Moment shrewdly targets the corporate side of making art for a living. Through celebrity cameos, a succinct yet riveting story, earnest emotion, and biting humor, Charli XCX's mockumentary captures something real about the battle of art versus commerce. How does one hold onto themselves when hit by an avalanche of more, more, more, for better or worse? The Moment shows one answer, urging audiences to find their own."*K.P.

Starring: Charli XCX, Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Jamie Demetriou, Hailey Benton Gates, Isaac Powell, and Alexander Skarsgård

How to watch: The Moment begins streaming on HBO Max May 29.

Best of streaming this week: Spider-Noir

It's impossible to single out just one highlight in the Academy Award–winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but hearing Nicolas Cage voice the ultra-broody Spider-Man Noir is certainly up there. This year, Cage takes that portrayal into live action with Spider-Noir, which audiences can watch in black and white or color.

SEE ALSO: I watched 'Spider-Noir' in black and white and color, and there's a clear winner

The series takes place in 1930s New York, where Cage's Ben Reilly is a grizzled private investigator who also happens to be the city's only superhero. Here's hoping he gets to drink all the egg creams and punch all the Nazis he wants. If it's even half as fun as Spider-Man Noir's appearance in Into the Spider-Verse, I'm all for it.*B.E.

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, and Jack Huston

How to watch: Spider-Noir is streaming on Prime Video May 27.
