The final Grand Slam tournament of the season begins today — the 2024 US Open — which is held at its traditional home, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York. Among the top stars set to play on the opening day is German fourth seed, Alexander Zverev.

It's been a frustrating season for Zverev so far, after reaching the semi-final of the Australian Open and the final of the French Open. He then took an unexpected fourth round exit at Wimbledon. Fans can expect Zverev to advance past unseeded finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori in this first-round fixture, but the 27-year-old German is still looking for his first Grand Slam win. Is he on the road to victory in Queens?

NYT Strands hints, answers for August 26

Mashable - Sun, 08/25/2024 - 22:00

If you're reading this, you're looking for a little help playing Strands, the New York Times' elevated word-search game.

Strands requires the player to perform a twist on the classic word search. Words can be made from linked letters — up, down, left, right, or diagonal, but words can also change direction, resulting in quirky shapes and patterns. Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

You're watching 'Industry' wrong

Mashable - Sun, 08/25/2024 - 21:00

There's a lot of great dialogue in Industry. But if you aren't watching with subtitles on, you're missing out on the best of it.

The financial HBO show is on its third season of mess and drama perpetrated by employees at the fictional investment bank Pierpoint & Co., and it finally got bumped up to the prime Sunday night spot. Mashable's Belen Edwards praised Season 3's experimentation, writing, "that atmosphere of high-risk, high-reward decision-making, complemented by high-risk, high-reward television-making, makes watching Industry a high of its own. It's brutal, it's intoxicating, and it's never been better," in her Season 3 review.

SEE ALSO: 'Industry' Season 3 review: There's no better time to invest in HBO's finance drama

Among the zingers featured in Sunday's episode's audible dialogue:

"I'll just let other people call you a posh cunt behind your back," Rob (Harry Lawtey) lobs at manchild and Lumi founder Henry (Kit Harington) moments before they tussle in Lumi's ball pit.

"Do we have a jacket in the office?" a nervy Henry asks his assistant. "No, you implemented a no-jacket policy," she replies.

"You are the godmother to fucking Boadicea," a livid Anna (Elena Saurel) snaps at Petra (Sarah Goldberg), her partner at FutureDawn, her ESG start-up.

If you love this stuff you can hear upon first watch, you're going to have a feast with your eyes when you turn closed captions on.

In an interview with The Watch podcast in 2020, Industry co-creator Konrad Kay explained that the show's sound design encourages the use of closed captions. "[When we were designing it, we said] it has to be loud, it has to be oppressive. HBO was like, people are not going to be able to hear your dialogue…you cannot start an HBO drama with a disclaimer, 'Please turn on the closed captioning otherwise you won’t enjoy it,'" said Kay. Despite HBO's concerns, Kay and his co-creator Mickey Down went full speed ahead with their atypical approach.

The financial drama makes the case for closed captions with its breakneck-speed conversations in a variety of accents, some more legible than others. (Rob has a particular mumble-grunt delivery that has me rewinding and reaching for closed captions.) And the talk often features more financial jargon than is healthy for the average person's consumption. But closed captions also reveal hidden gems. The tool picks up what human ears might not: the hilarious background dialogue.

Rishi (Sagar Radia) talking some shit out of the side of his mouth on the desk? Closed captions have you covered. A group of people seemingly out of earshot murmuring about the inevitable chaos? It's all written there on the bottom of your screen. The reactions after Gus (David Jonsson) says something peculiar and the camera follows him out of the room? I think you know the answer.

As one X user wrote, "hey @TheEmmys you need to create a category for background dialogue so the #IndustryHBO writers room can get their flowers." The post captioned a series of screenshots from last week's episode, including some truly wild remarks about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce — as always, Industry is endlessly relevant. Author Daniel José Older also tweeted, "you must watch #Industry with the captions on. Even if you're fluent in Assorted British, do it for the murmured background convos which are consistently amazing."

In the The Watch interview, Down explained that they wrote an entire script of automated dialogue replacement (ADR) — the industry term for background noise — per episode. While the co-creators worried that they included too much ADR, Down emphasized its role in creating Pierpoint's realistic open-concept office and undercutting the tense scenes of the show with humor.

As Season 3 gains viewership thanks to its primetime HBO Sunday night spot, the fandom for the show's gimmick also grows. On X, despite streaming services blocking screenshots due to copyright concerns, fans manage to screenshot and swap stills of their favorite ADR moments. The show's subreddit features threads of appreciation for the entertaining background noise. Over on YouTube, a compilation of Rishi's best moments, consisting of almost entirely off-camera one-liners (with subtitles already added) racked up nearly 200,000 views.

Tweet may have been deleted

All-timers include this off-camera exchange between Greg (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) and Rishi:

"I just think, you know, if I had biceps like that…with the vein running down through it, that, that bulge, you know…"

"Like Zac Efron?"

"Yeah, the Zac Efron."

"The Zefron."

"Yeah, I know I should be thinking about other things, like the suicide rate among men my age or whatever…"

And there are dozens of such cases you too could be privy to.

The outrageous background dialogue not only adds humor to the show, but it postitions the viewer right in the middle of the overwhelming world of Pierpoint. No wonder our favorite guys in finance can't think straight. If I was hearing Rishi's constant chatter, I, too, might make my fair share of awful decisions.

Be sure to turn those closed captions on for the full Pierpoint experience. And if you haven't been doing this the whole time, it might be worth a rewatch to pick up on all the background goodness.

Industry Season 3 releases new episodes weekly at 9 p.m. ET on Sundays on HBO and Max.

An apparent drone Steve Harvey projection in Atlanta's sky went super viral

Mashable - Sun, 08/25/2024 - 14:51

It'd be pretty shocking to look up into the night sky and see a glowing visage of Steve Harvey. Yet that is apparently what happened for some folks in Atlanta. Obviously the internet, in turn, loved it.

The whole thing started with a tweet from Andscape senior writer David Dennis Jr.

"There’s a light projection of Steve Harvey over Atlanta right now and I have no clue why," Dennis Jr. tweeted, along with a photo that's now been viewed more than seven million times.

Tweet may have been deleted

Now, let's be clear, Mashable has not yet been able to officially confirm this light show featuring a glowing Steve Harvey actually occurred on Friday night. The image from Dennis Jr. appears to be the only one that's made its way to the wider internet.

Though it does seem likely real, for a few reasons. One: Dennis Jr. is a journalist at a respected outlet and this would be a super strange thing on which to waste one's reputation. Two: The sleuths at Reddit noted there was an event called Invest Fest in Atlanta this weekend that featured Harvey as a speaker. And three: Posts from Invest Fest show a drone presentation, though nothing featuring the image of Harvey.

Regardless of the authenticity, the internet had some great jokes.

So there was (maybe) a massive electric Steve Harvey in the Atlanta sky thanks to drones. You can say a lot about living in the future — good and bad — but it sure is weird.

'10 Drunk Cigarettes': TikTok's trending AI hit is coke-binged bubblegum pop

Mashable - Sun, 08/25/2024 - 13:17

TikTok's new hit song sounds like the Powerpuff Girls dipped into Scarface's powder, puffed a joint, then ripped a night out in the East Village....then wrote a hyperpop, bubblegum song about it.

The song is called "10 Drunk Cigarettes" by Girly Girl Productions and it's a seemingly AI-assisted ditty about all the things a girl needs more than a man. You'd be forgiven that — barring the song title — it sounds like a godawful Katy Perry track. Instead, it's a pretty hilarious and raunchy song that folks have loved.

It doesn't hurt that the song seemingly plays off the old TikTok formula that made viral songs like "abcdefu" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Bitch." It's easy to count along, almost like "The Twelve Days of Christmas."

Here's the bulk of the song, written out for your reading pleasure:

"10 things us girls need before we ever need a man:

1 new vape

2 lines of coke

3 drinks from the bar

4 more lines of coke

5 guys fries

6 hits of my blunt

7 more lines of coke

8 pairs of shoes

9 B.B. belts

And 10 drunk cigarettes"

The song also goes into all the things a girl seriously doesn't need from a man before ultimately deciding some money would be nice. It's honestly a funny song and does the classic trick of mixing an innocent-sounding beat with raunchy lyrics.

People have been sharing it on TikTok and posting lip-syncs and covers. Some of the videos have logged hundreds of thousands, or up to a million, views.

Girly Girl Productions seems to make a lot of similar songs designed to go viral. A recent track, for instance, features a play on the "demure" trend. Most songs seem to follow a similar hyperpop, bubblegum aesthetic, and ridiculous lyrics formula.

So if you suddenly hear tons of tracks on TikTok combining girl power, vapes, and drugs, well, you'll know where it originated.

NASA's new plan keeps Starliner astronauts in space until 2025

Mashable - Sun, 08/25/2024 - 11:08

Have you ever had an eight-day road trip turn into an eight-month excursion? Nope? Well, consider yourself fortunate that you're not one of the astronauts currently stranded in space.

The two astronauts, Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who blasted to the International Space Station (ISS) in a Boeing Starliner are now set to remain there until 2025 due to issues with Boeing's spacecraft. NASA made the long-awaited decision on Saturday, citing safety concerns.

As Mashable's science and space reporter Elisha Sauers covered in detail, the space agency needed to decide about this time in August because port space — effectively parking for space crafts — is limited and NASA also needs to ensure the health of the astronauts. The concerns with the Starliner centered on issues with its propulsion system. Thrusters malfunctioned when the Starliner docked and engineers apparently haven't devised a sufficient fix or explanation. Those thrusters are important when landing the capsule, considering they keep it pointed in the correct direction.

SEE ALSO: Why time is running short to decide Starliner astronauts' ride home

The new plan dictates that Williams and Wilmore will return to Earth in February aboard a SpaceX capsule. The planned eight-day test run of the Starliner will, in turn, become an eight-month stay on the ISS. The Starliner will be sent back without any crew.

People's lives are involved and, it seems, NASA decided it was best to play it safe.

"We have had mistakes in the past," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. "We have lost two space shuttles as a result of there not being a culture in which information can come forward."

The decision is yet another blow to Boeing's reputation, which has had too many bad headlines to count of late. The safety concerns have only mounted since the tragic Boeing 737 Max crashes in 2018-19 that killed 346 people. Its space program also experiencing problems certainly isn't ideal — not for the company and certainly not for the astronauts stranded in space.
