Legendary trader Roaring Kitty finally shows his hand, and it's full of GME

Mashable - Mon, 06/03/2024 - 04:25

Roaring Kitty isn't done making money on GME.

The trader (whose real name is Keith Gill), known for making bank on GME (Gamestop) stock in 2021, made headlines last month when his account on X sprung to life after years of inactivity.

The sheer fact that Roaring Kitty (also known as DeepFuckingValue or DFV on Reddit) was active again was enough to propel the value of GME to new yearly highs, but the price swiftly retraced to previous levels as Roaring Kitty's account kept posting dozens of cryptic memes without any real indication as to what he's investing in.

This has now changed. On Sunday, Roaring Kitty posted a screenshot on Reddit's Superstonk subreddit. indicating that he has a massive position in GME once again, with $115.7 million worth of the stock itself and and addition $65.7 million worth of call options, allowing him to purchase GME stock at the price of $20 on June 21.

That's a lot of GME stock. Credit: DFV/reddit

He accompanied this post with another post on X, consisting only of a Uno "reversal" card, which changes the direction of the Uno game when played.

While there's no way of knowing whether Roaring Kitty really holds the positions he unveiled in that screenshot, the market is already reacting, with fans of the stock on Reddit calling it a "historic" moment.

The price of GME ended at $22.97 in the last trading session on the New York Stock Exchange. Premarket price of GME on Robinhood is nearly twice that much, and it currently resides at $43.20 (which, by the way, pushes the value of Roaring Kitty's position to well over $300 million).

Roaring Kitty achieved fame by leading an army of small investors, all of who kept buying GME stock until they pushed the price of GME to as high as $120, liquidating hedge fund Melvin Capital, which had a large short position in GME.

Besides being a bullish development for GME stock, some traders have noted the sheer size of Roaring Kitty's position, which is more than $180 million dollars. It was widely believed that he made tens of millions of dollars on GME, but it seems that he's managed to turn that into hundreds of millions in the meantime.

MrBeast breaks the ultimate YouTube record

Mashable - Mon, 06/03/2024 - 03:53

MrBeast, a YouTuber known for his wildly popular gameshow-type content, has become the most subscribed channel on the platform.

The viral star, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, overtook Bollywood production titans T-Series over the weekend, who have held the most-subscribed title since they overtook controversial YouTuber PewDiePie in 2018.

SEE ALSO: Everything we know about MrBeast's Prime Video game show

"After 6 years we have finally avenged Pewdiepie," wrote Donaldson on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a screenshot of his channel's subscriber count alongside that of T-Series. (Donaldson previously supported Pewdiepie when his channel was competing with T-Series for most subscribers back in 2018.)

Tweet may have been deleted

Donaldson later shared a post saying that Saturday – the day his channel overtook T-Series – was the biggest daily subscriber increase his channel has ever seen. At the time of writing, MrBeast has 269 million YouTube subscribers.

This isn't the first YouTube record MrBeast has broken. Last August – back when Donaldson's channel "only" had 174 million subscribers – he claimed that his latest video had received the highest number of views in 24 hours for a non-music video.

Donaldson's YouTube momentum has only been increasing in recent years. His most popular YouTube video, an IRL version of Netflix's Squid Game, has well over 600 million views. The majority of his recent uploads have view counts in the hundreds of millions.

Connections is the latest New York Times word game that's captured the public's attention. The game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today's puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for June 2's Connections solution. But if you'd rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections?

The NYT's latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications' Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

WWDC 2024: What to expect

Mashable - Sun, 06/02/2024 - 13:57

Apple's World Wide Developer Conference is almost here and the anticipation is palpable. This is poised to be a pivotal event for the Cupertino-based tech giant as it's expected to unveil plans for integrating generative artificial intelligence into iOS.

SEE ALSO: Apple's WWDC invite has arrived. Here's how to tune in.

Unlike hardware events typically held in the fall, WWDC centers around Apple's software ecosystem. However, past surprises like the Vision Pro reveal remind us to stay tuned for potential unexpected announcements.

Here's what to expect:

AI Takes Center Stage

As AI continues to dominate tech industry headlines, Apple is expected to make substantial strides in this domain. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is collaborating with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18. This partnership marks a significant step as Apple aims to compete with Google, Microsoft, and Samsung, who have made substantial advancements in AI.

While Apple doesn't yet have its own AI chatbot ready for release, discussions with Google to incorporate its Gemini AI assistant into iPhones are ongoing. Siri is also expected to receive significant upgrades, using Apple's large language models to perform more specific tasks within apps, such as opening documents and sending emails. These Siri enhancements, however, are likely to be rolled out in early 2025.

For iOS 18, Apple is expected to introduce AI features that enhance user experience. According to Bloomberg, anticipated features include:

  • Voice memo transcriptions: AI-driven transcription for quick and easy voice memo handling.

  • Faster search: Enhanced search capabilities powered by AI.

  • Conversational Siri: Improvements to Siri to make interactions more natural and intuitive.

  • Smart Recap: AI summaries of news stories, documents, and notifications.

  • Custom Emojis: On-the-fly creation of emojis based on text content.

RCS Messaging

Beyond AI, Apple may talk about its move to adopt Rich Communication Services (RCS). Apple is set to have RCS replace SMS — offering iMessage-like features such as typing indicators, high-resolution media sharing, and end-to-end encryption.

This shift will improve cross-platform messaging, especially between iPhone and Android devices, although it's unclear if the green bubble issue might persist.

Adopting RCS is particularly timely as Apple faces an antitrust suit from the Department of Justice. The suit claims Apple undermines competition by not making iMessage available on Android. Highlighting RCS adoption at WWDC would demonstrate Apple’s efforts to address these concerns and bridge the messaging gap.

macOS 15 and hardware expectations

macOS 15 will mirror many iOS updates, including changes to Apple Music, Notes, and productivity apps. The Calculator app is also expected to receive a significant overhaul, featuring Notes integration and improved unit conversions.

On the hardware front, significant announcements are not anticipated this year, following last year’s hardware-heavy WWDC. Processor advancements are a staple of WWDC, and this year will be no different. However, the introduction of M3 or M4 chips into desktop systems could be on the agenda.

The upcoming A18 chip for iPhone is expected to feature improved AI performance, aligning with the new M4 chips in the latest iPad Pro models.

Despite trying to ban it, Trump just joined TikTok

Mashable - Sun, 06/02/2024 - 13:08

Former President Donald Trump is now on TikTok, a move he announced it in an unsurprisingly weird way.

SEE ALSO: TikTok is reportedly prepping a U.S. version of its algorithm

In a video posted onto TikTok on Saturday from the verified account @realDonaldTrump, UFC CEO Dana White introduced Trump, saying "The president is now on TikTok."

"It’s my honor," Trump said, which is pretty odd considering the politician and convicted felon tried to ban the app while he was in office. The rest of the video pans across different shots of the crowd at the UFC fight in Newark, New Jersey to the tune of "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock.

"The campaign is playing on all fields," an adviser to Trump’s campaign told Politico. "Being able to do outreach on multiple platforms and outlets is important and this is just one of many ways we’re going to reach out to voters. TikTok skews towards a younger audience."

Both presidential candidates — Trump and President Joe Biden — have attempted to ban the app. In April, Biden signed a bill into law that could effectively ban TikTok in the U.S. unless ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, sells its shares in the app. When Trump was in office, he issued an executive order to stop new users from downloading TikTok, but courts blocked his attempts.

Despite this, both Biden and Trump's campaigns are on the app themselves.

Asus ROG Ally X hands-on: My brief experience with a possible Steam Deck killer

Mashable - Sun, 06/02/2024 - 05:00

I adore my Steam Deck OLED, but the Asus ROG Ally X has a case as the gaming handheld you should have your eyes on right now.

Announced on Sunday, this new iteration on 2023's ROG Ally is far from a ROG Ally 2. It doesn't have significantly enhanced horsepower nor a dazzling new display, but Asus made a bunch of small-but-important upgrades to everything in the margins.

Based on a brief hands-on demo of the ROG Ally X, anyone who's been on the fence about jumping into the handheld gaming PC market should give this $799 device some serious consideration.

Asus ROG Ally X: specs and upgrades The new black colorway is really nice. Credit: Asus

To be perfectly clear, again, this is not a straight up sequel to the ROG Ally. Anyone who bought that device a year ago should not feel an imminent need to upgrade right now. To demonstrate why, here are the Ally X's basic specs, with differences noted:

  • 7-inch 1080p display with 120Hz refresh rate

  • AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor

  • AMD Radeon GPU

  • 24GB LPDDR5 on-board memory (up from 16GB on ROG Ally)

  • Up to 1TB of SSD storage (up from 512GB on ROG Ally)

  • 3.5mm audio jack

  • MicroSD card reader

  • Two USB-C ports (up from one on ROG Ally)

So, on the surface, we're looking at a device with the same display, the same CPU, and the same GPU as the current $699 model. And yes, it runs Windows 11 just like the previous model did.

That part is important because it gives Asus an inherent, out-of-the-box advantage over Steam Deck, a device that runs a custom version of Linux — unless you go in and tinker with it yourself. Having Windows 11 pre-installed gives users increased access to games from storefronts like the Epic Games Store and Xbox Game Pass. Steam Deck owners, on the other hand, have to work harder to get those things.

But if you thought the upgrades only amounted to more RAM, storage, and another USB-C port, you are sorely mistaken. Asus redesigned the motherboard to include a M.2 2280 slot so users can more easily upgrade the device's storage themselves. Perhaps most importantly, there's now an 80Wh battery powering the device, literally twice as big as the battery inside the older ROG Ally.

Asus was able to do all of that while redesigning the exterior, giving it a new black colorway and a slightly more ergonomic button layout. The new analog sticks are expected to last longer (Asus claims they can survive 5 million cycles), the back buttons are smaller to reduce the possibility of accidentally pressing them during gameplay, and the analog sticks and face buttons are now placed at a marginally more friendly angle, so moving your thumbs from one to the other should be more comfortable.

My actual hands-on time with the Ally X was brief — and there wasn't an original ROG Ally nearby for the sake of direct comparison. But even in just a handful of minutes toying with the device, it was clear that this is a more substantial upgrade than originally expected.

For starters, the new ergonomic button placements feel very comfortable, regardless of how they compare to the original design. Sliding my thumbs from the sticks to the face buttons never felt awkward, and the grips on the back help give it a steady center of gravity. I didn't ever feel like I was in danger of dropping it or anything like that. And no, I never accidentally pressed one of the back buttons, which is something I have done on my Steam Deck.

Asus says the ROG Ally X is only 0.15lbs heavier than the original (for a total of 1.49lbs) despite its internal improvements — and I can confirm that the weight is not a distraction, at least in the short term. One thing Asus promises about the Ally X that couldn't really be tested in a quick hands-on is that it's supposed to have better thermals to reduce the odds of the device running hot after a long session. That will be something to keep an eye on as units ship out to customers later this year.

As for game performance, you shouldn't really expect any major differences from the original ROG Ally (the CPU and GPU hasn't changed). More RAM theoretically helps out, but we'll need to wait for detailed benchmarks for really hardware-intensive AAA games like Cyberpunk 2077. The only game I got hands-on time with was 2020's Battletoads, a 2D beat-'em-up with visuals that looked sharp, punchy, and impressive on the ROG Ally X's display. It was running at well above 60 FPS, too, which is good, but not really surprising.

With a price point that's $100 higher than the existing high-end ROG Ally, it's hard to make a case for someone to run out and upgrade from that device to the Ally X. However, this is a case study in why early adoption is occasionally for suckers. It may not be the ROG Ally 2, but the Ally X seems like the device the original version should've been. A handful of thoughtful internal and external changes give it real potential, especially in a suddenly crowded handheld gaming PC market.

The fact that it just has Windows from the jump is huge, too. Honestly, that should be the selling point, even with how much I love the Steam Deck.
