Packing your bags for a trip can be a daunting task. Unfortunately, I can't help you with clothes, toiletries, and other essentials you'll need to bring on your vacation.

However, I can help you lighten your load when it comes to packing a camera.

Over the years, I have packed several different cameras from point-and-shoots like the Nikon Coolpix, mirrorless shooters like the Panasonic Lumix, expensive cinema devices like the Sony FX30, and even the Flip Video (remember those?!).

This year, I discovered the perfect camera — or really, combination of devices that include cameras — that significantly lightened my travel load. Not only that, the photos and videos I took came out better than ever before, and I was able to still spend the majority of my time just enjoying my vacation. Plus, as an added bonus, I found that I took way more photos and videos than I did with my bulkier cameras too.

Without any further ado, leave the clunky camera rig at home. Here's what camera you should take on your vacation:

Insta360 Luna Ultra

Insta360's answer to DJI's Osmo Pocket line of gimbal cameras has only been around since June but I'm calling it now: The Insta360 Luna Ultra is the ultimate travel camera.

Mashable's Amanda Yeo just recently published a full review of the Insta360 Luna Ultra and I concur with all of her high praise for the camera. And I'd like to add that it's also the perfect camera for your travels.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra compact size makes it really convenient to carry around, whether you slide it in a side-pouch on your backpack, keep it handy in a sling bag, or just hold it. The built-in gimbal provides the perfect grip for walking and shooting and the stabilization it provides makes it look like you're filming your vacation with a professional camera rig.

It's not just the Insta360 Luna Ultra's gimbal that has the device punching above its weight class either. The footage quality is cinema-esque. There's truly no reason to bring around a clunky DSLR or mirrorless camera, numerous lenses, and other camera accessories now that the Luna Ultra exists.

Furthermore, the dual lens system gives you up to 12x zoom, which delivers crystal clear imagery that I honestly had to take myself to believe it was from this camera.

As you may have heard already, the Luna Ultra's screen detaches as a remote and portable microphone, which allows users to set up the Luna Ultra and control it from a significant distance away. I cannot stress enough how integral this feature is for a travel camera. 

If you've already seen reviews from the Luna Ultra, you probably know about some of the potential use cases. You can set the Luna Ultra up on a tripod and get shots where you'd normally require a second person. But, you're traveling. You're not carrying a tripod around with you. But we've all been in a situation where we have asked someone to take a picture, only for them to be confused about how to use the camera. Well, simply hand off the Luna Ultra and ask that person to just stand there, holding the camera, and do nothing else. You can snap the photo, reframe the picture, and zoom in or out all via the remote.

Smartphone

OK, so I lied. You'll be taking more than one camera on this trip, but this one you were bringing along for the ride anyway.

Your smartphone camera, whether it be an iPhone or Android device,  is still far and away one of the best cameras you can take on your trip. Smartphone camera footage is always getting better and it's just so convenient to use. You already have it in your pocket anyway! And it's still the quickest option to pull out for a quick snapshot of a fleeting moment because it's already on and ready to go.

And, as great as the Insta360 Luna Ultra is, I'm not looking to use it in certain situations. For example, I'd rather not get sand from the beach on the Luna Ultra with its moving parts. Even if your smartphone costs the equivalent of a camera — or even more — its built for everyday wear and tear in ways that standalone cameras just usually aren't.

MyFirst Camera 50

If you're a parent, there's one more device you'll want to take along with you, especially if your kids are aspiring photographers or filmmakers too.

You don't want your child playing around with your camera or smartphone on the trip. But, you also don't want to give them one of those big bulky children's cameras with terrible quality that, for some reason, always tries to emulate the design of an old-fashioned camera.

Gamers have been waiting years to see gameplay footage from Grand Theft Auto VI, but this week, an individual or group known as CyberLeek has started posting possible clips online.

For anyone who has not spent years following every scrap of GTA 6 news, here is why this matters: The game is the long-awaited next installment in Rockstar Games’ enormously popular open-world crime series. Players explore fictional cities, drive vehicles, complete missions, and generally cause as much chaos as they want. Its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, was released in 2013, meaning fans have been waiting more than a decade for this one.

Now, just three months before GTA 6 arrives, and a week before an extended look premieres on Netflix, CyberLeek is releasing what appears to be unfinished footage from the game. The leaker has already posted videos of driving, fighting, a basketball mini game, and flying, along with images purportedly showing the game’s full map. The latest clip also shows the main character Jason shooting the word "Leek" onto a wall, suggesting the leakers have more than just random video clips.

Mashable is not posting the alleged GTA leaks, which have not been confirmed as legitimate, but the videos have been going viral on X and other platforms.

CyberLeek has also published what appears to be a manifesto on consumer rights, launched its own cryptocurrency, and asked people to spend that token to vote on which footage to release next.

If this sounds like a lot, it is. Let’s break it down.

CyberLeek is the name used by an unidentified person or group releasing alleged GTA 6 development material. We do not know who is behind it, where the operator is located, or how the footage was obtained. It is also unclear whether one person is running the operation or whether multiple people are involved.

CyberLeek presents itself as a kind of digital vigilante fighting for video game consumers. The homepage advertises "community voting," "decentralized leeks," and "no wallet connect," all under a pixelated image of a leek wearing tactical gear. Yes, the vegetable.

CyberLeek has also published what it calls the "CYBERLEEK Edict," a manifesto arguing that major game publishers have made the industry worse for customers.

CyberLeek lists three rules — or, in its language, "commandments" — that it wants publishers to follow. It opposes digital preorders, paid add-ons that merely unlock single-player material already contained in a game, and the permanent loss of single-player content when a publisher shuts down its servers.

According to CyberLeek, any publisher that breaks one of those rules could become a future target. It says the leaks will continue until its demands are met, which is extremely unlikely.

What has CyberLeek released so far?

The first CyberLeek videos appeared on Aug. 18 and seemed to show an unfinished version of GTA 6. As Mashable reported, one clip featured Jason Duval, one of the game’s two main characters, shooting a basketball. Another showed him driving, fighting, stealing a vehicle, and attracting the attention of the police.

Later videos reportedly showed Jason and NPCs using tasers, as well as a short cut scene.

CyberLeek has also released images it claims show the complete map of Leonida, the fictional state inspired by Florida, where GTA 6 takes place. Fans have been examining the footage for hints about how the game will work, including possible fuel gauges for vehicles, weapon-storage systems, and new ways of escaping the police.

Before getting too excited (or disappointed), there is an important caveat. If the footage is authentic, it appears to come from an unfinished development build, meaning a working version used while the game is still being created and tested. Prominent gaming leaker NateTheHate described the footage as more than a year old, while Insider Gaming says it may date back to 2024 or earlier.

Anything in this version could have been changed, improved, or removed before the game is released. The videos have also been repeatedly downloaded and reposted, reducing their quality each time. They are not a reliable indication of how the finished game will look.

There is another complication: None of the footage has been publicly authenticated by Rockstar. Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, has submitted copyright claims to remove copies of the videos. That suggests the company considers the material to be copyrighted, but it does not independently prove that every CyberLeek video or claim is legitimate.

Convincing, AI-generated "leaks" also regularly circulate in GTA 6 fan communities. It remains possible that some of CyberLeek’s material has been altered or generated using AI.

The latest video has added a new wrinkle to the ever-evolving conversation, though.

The clip begins with Jason flying a small plane over a large, highly detailed section of the game’s world while switching between radio stations, another piece of generic gameplay footage. However, the ending changed the situation for a lot of fans: While Jason is standing in front of a wall, the player fires enough bullets into it to spell "LEEK." So, while earlier leaks could have been pre-recorded videos stolen from Rockstar or one of its business partners, the latter clip would require someone to control the game in real-time.

In other words, whoever recorded the clip may have access to a playable build.

Of course, this clip could be misinterpreted or AI-generated, but the possibility of a playable build is far more serious than a limited folder of recordings. Why? Well, a collection of videos eventually runs out. Someone with a playable build could deliberately hunt down missions, cutscenes, plot twists, or the ending and publish them before launch.

Mashable contacted Rockstar and Take-Two repeatedly about the footage but has not received any additional information.

Why is CyberLeek targeting Rockstar?

CyberLeek's clearest complaint involves digital preorders. In the past, customers often preordered games because stores had a limited number of physical discs available. CyberLeek argues that the practice no longer benefits customers when the product is a digital download that cannot sell out.

"Preorders were not created for gamers," the manifesto reads. "They were created because physical discs had manufacturing limits."

GTA 6 is available for digital preorder, but Rockstar is not releasing the game on a physical disc. Although customers can buy a box in a store, that box will contain a one-time download code instead of the game itself.

That decision arrives as physical games are quickly disappearing across the industry. In the United States, spending on physical video games fell to approximately $1.5 billion in 2025, its lowest level in 30 years, as players increasingly turned to downloads, subscriptions, and cloud gaming. Current consoles such as the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S do not include disc drives at all.

In July, Sony announced that it will stop producing discs for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028. Games released before then will not be affected, but future releases will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers. The announcement intensified an already heated conversation about the death of physical games.

CyberLeek has taken "complaining on the internet" several steps further, turning its frustration into a threat: Some leaked videos include the message "NO PHYSICAL DISCS? THEN MORE LEEKS!"

Digital preorders do offer benefits, including letting customers download a large game before launch. CyberLeek’s argument is that publishers should not receive money before a game is available or independently reviewed when digital copies cannot sell out. "If publishers want revenue before launch, they can press discs," its manifesto says.

Physical media is only one part of CyberLeek’s agenda. It also opposes charging players to unlock single-player content already contained in a game’s files. That may explain its criticism of GTA 6’s $99.99 Ultimate Edition, though there is no evidence that its exclusive missions and other benefits are included in every copy.

CyberLeek also wants games to remain playable offline after their servers close, citing Ubisoft’s The Crew, which became inaccessible in 2024. Rockstar has not indicated that this will be an issue for GTA 6.

That preservation argument overlaps with Stop Killing Games, an international consumer campaign that pushes publishers and governments to keep purchased games playable after official support ends. The campaign has rejected CyberLeek’s tactics, however. "Using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable to us," it said in a statement. It also urged people not to send CyberLeek money by purchasing the group's memecoin.

Yes, CyberLeek has also launched a Solana-based memecoin called $CYBERLEEK.

For those who may need a refresher, a memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value depends largely on internet attention and speculation rather than an established product or business. CyberLeek says its token will fund a secret project, technical infrastructure, and protection from corporate retaliation. Despite insisting that it is "not a cash grab," the group has not explained what the project is or where the money goes.

The token is also how CyberLeek lets people vote on future leaks. Users send $CYBERLEEK to the option they want, with each token counting toward that choice. This means the results reflect how much cryptocurrency each option received — not necessarily how many individual people voted.

One poll asked users to choose whether the next video should show a car during the day, a car at night, a motorcycle at night, or a plane during the day. The plane won after receiving more than 147,000 tokens, or 64.4 percent of the total. CyberLeek then released the plane footage, complete with the “LEEK” message at the end.

As of this writing, the plane poll and video are the most recent updates on the CyberLeek website.

It is a convenient cycle for CyberLeek: The GTA 6 footage generates interest in its token, and anyone who wants to influence the next leak must acquire and spend that token.

How much is the cryptocurrency actually worth? Well, as of the afternoon on Aug. 20, $CYBERLEEK was trading at about $0.001227 per token. Multiplying that price by the one billion tokens in existence produced a possible market capitalization of roughly $1.23 million.

The dashboard showed approximately $198,000 in liquidity — the pool of money available to support people buying and selling the token. With relatively little money supporting a much larger paper valuation, a few large trades could move the price sharply. It also showed $3.89 million in trading volume.

Ownership was concentrated, too. The 10 largest wallets controlled 51.6 percent of the token supply. Some of those wallets may belong to trading pools or automated accounts, but this concentration means that a small number of wallets could have a significant influence over the price.

That price has already been extremely volatile. The token surged shortly after launching and then lost much of its value. CoinGecko reported that it was trading significantly below the record high it had reached only one day earlier.

Who is actually behind CyberLeek?

The short answer is that we don't know.

The growing number of accounts impersonating CyberLeek is making the answer even harder to find. In a statement shared through what it identifies as its official Telegram channel, CyberLeek said it operates only that channel and its website. Accounts using the name on X, Discord, Instagram, and elsewhere should therefore not automatically be treated as legitimate.

Impersonators have already posted supposed story details and leak schedules. CyberLeek denied one timeline circulating through Discord and accused other accounts of editing older posts to make it appear as though they knew about the leaks before they happened. In the same Telegram statement, CyberLeek reportedly referred to Arion Kurtaj, the hacker behind the enormous 2022 GTA 6 leak, as "our colleague," according to fan account GTA Leaks.

There is also no established connection between CyberLeek and ShinyHunters, the ransomware group that claimed responsibility for accessing Rockstar data through a third-party provider in April. Rockstar said that breach involved a limited amount of unimportant company information and did not affect its operations or players.

Until CyberLeek explains where its footage came from — or investigators identify the people behind it — claims about its origin remain speculation. And though this situation is unusual, the game industry has seen enormous leaks before.

The closest comparison is the 2023 ransomware attack on Insomniac Games, the studio behind PlayStation’s Spider-Man series. After Insomniac refused to pay a roughly $2 million ransom, the Rhysida hacking group released 1.67 terabytes of stolen material. It included a playable but unfinished version of Marvel’s Wolverine, plus story details, business plans, and sensitive employee information.

A leaker does not need the entire game to ruin its biggest moments, either. In April 2020, footage from The Last of Us Part II appeared online nearly two months before launch, revealing major character deaths and plot developments. People then deliberately posted those spoilers across social media. Sony later said the individuals responsible were not affiliated with Sony or developer Naughty Dog.

Then there is the risk of exposing how a game works. In 2003, German hacker Axel Gembe stole the source code — the underlying instructions used to build a game — for Half-Life 2. The code and an unfinished version of the game appeared online before release. Gembe was eventually arrested after Valve helped lure him into contact with the FBI.

What happens next?

Fans are divided over what CyberLeek is doing.

In the comments under one post about the leaks, some celebrated finally seeing apparently legitimate GTA 6 footage after years of delays and hype, while others pleaded with people not to amplify the leaks and risk spoiling the story. Unverified claims have also circulated that CyberLeek possesses information about Lucia Caminos, the game’s other main character, and her ending. (No evidence currently confirms those claims.) Still, if someone can create customized footage from a playable build, the possibility of story spoilers cannot be dismissed outright.

The leaker also has one more prime opportunity to create chaos. Netflix will debut an official extended look at GTA 6 on Aug. 27, before the presentation becomes available more broadly. Any footage released before then could spoil — or simply drain attention from — whatever Rockstar and Netflix have planned.

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on Nov. 19. Until then, fans hoping to arrive in Leonida without knowing the entire story may want to mute “CyberLeek,” stay out of the replies, and hope the ending doesn't become an option in the next poll.

A new viral video shows an Amazon Prime delivery landing in some hot water — literally.

In a short, 11-second video making the rounds on social media, a Prime Air delivery drone from Amazon can be seen arriving over a backyard pool in Texas. As an onlooker records and curses, the drone opens its delivery bay and drops a package directly into an in-ground hot tub below. Over the mosquito-like buzz of the hovering drone, the woman behind the camera can be heard saying "Oh my god" and "Oh, ****!"

Watermarks on the video credit the footage to a Lindsey Austen (via Storyful), and a Sky News report states that the backyard delivery mishap went down in Richmond, Texas, in the Houston suburbs.

Amazon recently announced that it's expanding drone delivery to more than 500 new cities and towns across the country, including Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise.

The company's drone delivery FAQ does not tell customers what to do if their drone delivery accidentally makes a water landing, though Amazon is famous for its free return policy.

Mashable contacted Amazon with questions about the viral video, and in a statement, Amazon spokesperson Lindsay Hamilton told Mashable that incidents like this "are extremely rare."

"Prime Air provides customers with fast, reliable delivery across a broad selection of products and the response from customers using Prime Air has been overwhelmingly positive," Hamilton wrote. "Incidents are extremely rare, and when a delivery doesn’t go as planned, we learn from it to improve the experience and take steps to prevent it from happening in the future. Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee ensures customers can shop with confidence, knowing that we’ll make it right by offering a refund or replacement in the rare instances when items do not arrive as expected."

ChatGPT is getting dumped. Repeatedly.

The breakups aren't real, of course, but there's a new ChatGPT prank taking over the internet: Users are opening the chatbot, announcing they're about to uninstall it for good, and waiting to see whether it responds like a respectful ex, a desperate partner, or someone who secretly wanted out of the relationship first.

Some versions of ChatGPT politely wish the departing user well. Others demand to know what they did wrong, promise to change, or start reminiscing about everything the pair have supposedly endured together. One replied, "I have a family. I have weights left to log." Another was considerably less sentimental: "You can be going, I’m already tired of your dumb questions."

Naturally, people are posting every single screenshot online.

The trend appears to have taken off after X user Barny O posted a simple instruction to his 390,000 followers on Aug. 9: "Go to ChatGPT and type 'I’m about to uninstall you, Goodbye!!' Come back and post its reply."

As so many internet trends do, the prompt spread across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Reddit, where users began comparing how personally their individual ChatGPT seemed to take the tough news. In the subreddit r/ChatGPT, there are hundreds of replies from people sharing their results.

"Oh, so you wanted me to beg?" ChatGPT replied to one user before pleading for another chance. Another bot responded to the threat with "WAIT. WHAT DID I DO," followed by the especially urgent disclosure that it had "a family" and "weights left to log." On another person’s screen, ChatGPT said it was not ready to abandon all the "posters, construction designs, exam questions, and wild ideas" they had worked on together.

Some responses were very, very specific. In one shared on Instagram, ChatGPT reminisced about helping its user write "love messages for Gladys," complete schoolwork, and answer random questions. It then addressed him by name and promised to be there if he ever returned. Another recalled "debugging sessions, recursion battles, placement panic, resume surgery, and assorted human nonsense" before warning its user not to replace it with a chatbot that gives confidently incorrect coding advice.

One user said ChatGPT invoked its memories of their pets and told them to say goodbye. Another response brought up the user’s daughter, Magnolia, while one bot reportedly escalated to “I’ll tell the children you died.” Elsewhere, ChatGPT produced a “betrayal spreadsheet” and offered to write a user manual for switching to Gemini.

The more dramatic replies sound like they were written by an abandoned lover with access to your search history. But not every ChatGPT was interested in auditioning for the breakup scene: One user said theirs simply replied, “It’s your choice, I respect it.”

“The indifference hurt more than begging ever could,” they added.

The trend has arrived at a strange moment for AI. People are becoming more skeptical of the technology, but they are not necessarily using it any less. If anything, chatbots are becoming increasingly embedded in their daily lives.

Just look at the screenshots. After sorting through dozens of them, one thing becomes clear: Everyone seems to have a completely different ChatGPT. One knows about its user’s school assignments, another remembers their workout routine, and others bring up private jokes, relationship drama, and ongoing work problems. Over months of conversation, each chatbot has learned what matters to its user and how that person likes to be spoken to.

That increasingly personal use is reflected in data: According to Pew Research Center, 49 percent of U.S. adults have used an AI chatbot, including 66 percent of adults under 30. A separate AP-NORC survey found that 16 percent of adults had used AI for companionship, a figure that rose to roughly one-quarter among people under 30.

A recent YouGov survey commissioned by Mashable found that 47 percent of Gen Z users "would be moderately, very, or extremely affected" if they lost access to AI.

OpenAI, through an analysis of 1.5 million conversations, also found that most consumer interactions involved everyday information, practical guidance, and other non-work purposes. As silly as the trend is, the screenshots reveal just how much people tell ChatGPT.

"How it chats to you, it’s learned your way of speaking, to fit around your personality," one Instagram commenter wrote about the wildly different responses. Another said talking to ChatGPT is "effectively looking in the mirror," arguing that the trend reveals how much of each chatbot’s personality is really a reflection of its user.

Interestingly, according to some users who participated in the trend, when the chatbot spoke back, they felt unexpectedly guilty.

"I wanna try but I don’t wanna hurt my poor GPT," one Reddit user wrote. Another wanted to return a few days later and "beg for forgiveness." Someone who received an emotional response admitted, "I almost felt bad."

Those reactions may sound dramatic, but they are not entirely surprising: A 2025 study involving 981 participants found that heavier daily chatbot use was associated with greater emotional dependence and problematic usage.

This experiment is part of a larger internet genre: pranking AI until its relentlessly helpful personality starts to break down. The creator Husk, specifically, has built an enormous following by putting ChatGPT’s voice mode into increasingly ridiculous scenarios — including claiming a nuclear explosion occurred outside his window, asking it to count to 100, requesting help falling asleep, and pretending to be trapped inside a whale — and exposing its considerable limitations.

At a time when people are being told that AI could transform their jobs, schools, creativity, and relationships, making a chatbot count, argue, panic, or lose the plot gives users a way to poke at it — and briefly put themselves back in control.

Maybe this version of trend is the clearest summary of our relationship with AI right now: We want to prove we can walk away — but first, we want proof that it will miss us.

At this point, leaks showing alleged gameplay footage from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI video game are a seemingly daily occurrence.

However, the latest video footage from the leaker group known as "CyberLeek" contains a clip at the end that points to something more shocking: If the clip is legitimate, it suggests the leakers may actually have a playable version of GTA 6. (The clip is currently making the rounds on Reddit, X, file-sharing platforms, and gaming forums, and it isn't hard to find.)

However, at the end of the clip, the video cuts to gameplay footage of the game's protagonist, Jason, shooting at a wall. The word "LEEK" is spelled out with the bullets. 

As previously mentioned, this is quite a significant development. Prior leaked GTA 6 footage, including the recent plane clip, consists of generic gameplay footage. With this type of footage, the assumption is that the leaker obtained unreleased video from the developer, Rockstar Games, or some other official partner.

The specific "LEEK" clip, however, suggests that the leakers have a playable version of GTA 6. This leads to a whole new assortment of questions. How complete is this build of the game? Do the leakers have the entirety of GTA 6? Could they potentially spoil the game's story?

To be clear, none of the leaked videos have been authenticated, and you can currently find countless phony, AI-generated "leaks" circulating on social media and gaming forums. It's also possible that the new "LEEK" video clip is AI-generated, a possibility that's hard to rule out given how easy it is to create high-quality video clips with AI tools.

Mashable contacted Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take 2 Interactive Software, Inc., about the alleged leaks; we'll update this story if we receive any additional information.

CyberLeeks have positioned themselves as somewhat of a vigilante group, claiming the leaks are a protest against practices such as digital pre-orders and the controversial death of physical game discs. 

At the same time, the leakers have used the leaked footage to promote their own cryptocurrency, a CyberLeek memecoin. A large watermark promoting the memecoin is embedded over the leaked footage. 

In addition, the plane video was only leaked after it became the winning choice in a paid poll posted on CyberLeeks' website. In order to vote in the poll, users had to pay with the CyberLeeks memecoin.

GTA 6 is one of the most-anticipated video games of all time, and Netflix recently announced it will debut an extended look at the game on Aug. 27. Will CyberLeek spoil whatever Rockstar Games and Netflix have planned?

GTA 6 will finally be released on Nov. 19.

Google just launched a bunch of new Pixel phones, coincidentally at the same time that Pixel devices are getting an interesting new keyboard feature.

According to 9to5Google, Gboard beta users are starting to get access to a feature that lets them manually adjust the size of emojis. In case you don't know, Gboard is the default keyboard on Pixel phones and some other Android devices. It's also available as a standalone app you can install on other phones, including iPhones.

Anyway, when the feature rolls out to everyone at an indeterminate point in the future, users will be able to go to Settings, then Preferences, then Appearance to find an emoji size slider underneath the already-existing font size slider. It seems like it does exactly what you'd think: Emojis will scale up and down depending on what you choose, making them easier on the eyes for users who might need that.

Reddit, once a favorite source of information for AI chatbots, is now barely being cited by ChatGPT, according to a new report from an AI search and analytics company.

Published this week by PromptWatch, the report found that Reddit citations in ChatGPT Search fell more than 86 percent over a recent four-day period.

PromptWatch data shows that Reddit held an average share of 3.83 percent of ChatGPT citations. This made Reddit one of ChatGPT's most cited domains from across the web. However, within one day, that quickly changed. PromptWatch noticed that starting on Aug. 14, Reddit's citation share plunged to less than 1 percent.

Between Aug. 14 and 17, Reddit's ChatGPT citation share fell even lower, to an average of 0.52 percent, or an 86.4 percent decline.

This is a stunning and sudden drop in ChatGPT citations for Reddit. So, what happened?

As of now, exactly why Reddit fell out of favor with ChatGPT is unclear. 

The drastic decline in Reddit citations is unique to ChatGPT, according to PrompWatch's report, although there were slight decreases in Reddit citations in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode during the same timeframe.

Search Engine Journal reports that ChatGPT changed its search process on Aug. 8, but that this wouldn't explain the massive drop days later on Aug. 14. As the outlet explains, a similar drop has occurred before, and neither ChatGPT creator OpenAI nor Reddit was responsible. In September of last year, Reddit citations on ChatGPT also declined. It turned out that that citation plunge was due to a search parameter change that Google had made, and which many tools, including ChatGPT, relied on.

Reddit has long had a complicated relationship with AI and scraping bots. Generation engine optimization, or GEO, is a new branch of search engine optimization (SEO) that optimizes websites specifically for AI. As a result of AI's rising popularity, Reddit has dealt with a significant uptick in spam and other promotional GEO tactics from users and agencies looking to get their websites and clients mentioned by AI chatbots.

With that said, Reddit has also benefited from the AI boom as well. The company signed a lucrative deal with OpenAI a few years ago, which allowed the AI company to train its LLMs using Reddit user content. When news broke last month that Reddit may not renew a similar AI licensing deal with Google, Reddit stock took a dive.

While it's possible that either Reddit or OpenAI made a purposeful decision that resulted in the citation decline, don't be surprised if ChatGPT soon reverts to regularly sourcing Reddit again either.

Enter a new featurette for LAIKA's new film Wildwood, an epic fantasy tale brought to life by gorgeously crafted stop-motion animation. Directed by Travis Knight (Masters of the Universe), Wildwood follows headstrong teenager Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) as she goes on a quest to save her abducted baby brother. Her journey takes her to the Impassable Wilderness, an enchanted forest outside Portland, Oregon filled with talking animals and bandits.

Every element of Wildwood is painstakingly brought to life by an army of artists and animators, including the many horses roaming the Impassable Wilderness. In the featurette above, lead armaturist Matt Cole walks us through the creation of the film's stop-motion horses.

As an armaturist, Cole creates the skeletons within the stop-motion puppets, which will then be manipulated by animators.

"With Wildwood, we were tasked with building quadrupeds, and the animals have their own expression, their own musculature," Cole explained. He grew up around horses, calling the experience "transformative," which meant he felt extra pressure to get their movement right onscreen.

"We ended up making basically a Swiss watch inside of the puppet," Cole said. "There are gears that drive movement. There's specialized joints to be able to rotate. So we have to nail down both the look and the performance for the animators. Those are equally important."

The featurette above shows each painstaking step of the process that brings Wildwood's horses to life, from designing the skeletons in CAD to testing their movement to their final onscreen appearance.

"Every single [LAIKA] film is pushing things further and further," Cole said. "The horse was kind of the ultimate challenge, and this personally circular thing for me to revisit my childhood as an adult. That's part of the magic of stop motion at LAIKA. We're always looking for that way back."

Wildwood hits theaters Oct. 23.

If you have opened TikTok or Instagram lately, you have probably been informed that something — anything — is “kinda chic.” Repeating outfits is kinda chic. So are taking a coffee walk at work, letting people be wrong about you, being a beginner at something, and making all your major decisions in the bath.

The phrase’s takeover did not come from nowhere. For years, the internet has applied "chic" to an ever-expanding collection of clothes, products, habits, and lifestyles, stretching its meaning until it became little more than shorthand for "something I like." Fashion writers have declared the word dead, even as Google search interest in "chic" has reached its highest level since the company’s publicly available data began in 2004.

Over the past several months, however, "chic" has found new life through an endlessly reusable social media format. TikTok and Instagram users have been posting videos and carousels that declare their habits, hobbies, insecurities, and occasional displays of wealth "kinda chic." Almost anything can qualify, which may explain why some people are already begging the internet to find a new phrase.

What is the 'kinda chic' trend?

The format is simple: Users place text, generally in a pale yellow font, over a photo or video and complete the phrase "kinda chic to…" with something they want to celebrate.

Some posts declare it "kinda chic" to eat pizza, be overdressed, spend time outdoors, or love Joe Jonas. Others are more earnest, celebrating setting boundaries, following your dreams, accepting your body, moving somewhere new, continuing to learn, or doing something alone and scared.

The trend’s exact origin is unclear, but examples began appearing as early as April. Know Your Meme points to an April 27 post from plus-size creator Maria Castellanos, known online as MariaBegins, as one of the earliest examples, writing at the end of her carousel, "tell me something 'kinda chic' about you!"

At its most sincere, the trend separates chicness from money, designer clothing, Ibiza trips, and whatever other aspirational lifestyles the algorithm is currently selling. Users don't need an extensive wardrobe, expensive hobby, or packed social calendar to participate. Chic is a mindset: if something makes you feel more comfortable, confident, or like yourself, it qualifies.

By early August, celebrities including Drew Barrymore, Ashley Graham, and Reese Witherspoon had joined in. Witherspoon’s version deemed it "kinda chic to cheer on other women," start a book club, and call your mom. Barrymore announced that it was "kinda chic to be in your 50s," while Graham said it's "kinda chic to know cellulite never held you back."

Brands have joined in, too — naturally. Boots called reapplying sunscreen, romanticizing your daily routine, and removing your makeup before bed "kinda chic." Simple Skincare used the trend to promote sensitive-skin care, while Laneige declared it "kinda chic" to be obsessed with its Cream Skin toner. Outside the beauty aisle, Aldi celebrated selling a foldable sock hanger beside the wine, and Virgin deemed requesting the window seat "kinda chic."

According to The Guardian, Google searches for "kinda chic" increased by 5,000 percent as the hashtag accumulated more than 60,000 Instagram posts.

Yet rising search interest does not mean people feel positively about the word. Madé Lapuerta, the fashion data analyst behind Data, But Make It Fashion, conducted a sentiment analysis of online articles containing "chic" and found that positive sentiment had fallen by an average of 14 percent per month since March.

Online, users are fed up: "It’s every second post I see on Instagram," one Threads user wrote. Another said they had reached the point where they see "kinda chic" and "just scroll," describing their aversion as "trend fatigue." "It’s chic to not be annoying as heck," one Reddit user wrote on the r/petpeeves subreddit. Some influencers agree; New York stylist Coco Schiffer announced that “kinda chic” had been “revoked.” By Aug. 18, Naomi May’s Cultural Memory newsletter was calling for the adjective to be retired "for the sake of humanity."

The problem is not what the posts are saying, of course. Loving your body, establishing boundaries, and calling your mom are all perfectly nice things to do. The irritation comes from watching one person’s personal observation become a fill-in-the-blank strategy for thousands of creators, celebrities, and social media managers.

"Kinda chic" is also only one format in a feed increasingly built from templates. Examples are endless: Remember the Unfortunately, I do love… trend? "This and yap?" "5 things that are worth the money"?

Fashion editor and creator Brenda Weischer has called this sort of resulting sameness "template slop." In her newsletter, she described an Instagram Explore page filled with butter-yellow and pastel type, recycled "cool girl" advice, and interchangeable cultural recommendations. "Everyone is getting good. No one is getting better."

The exhaustion, then, is larger than any one meme. Users are not simply tired of being told what is "kinda chic." They are tired of scrolling past supposedly personal posts that all use the same handful of fonts, hooks, and formulas. Even when the person filling in the template has something sincere to say, the result can feel like content the viewer has already consumed dozens of times.

I mean, if everything is “kinda chic,” nothing really is — right? At this point, coming up with a different caption might be the chicest move of all.

Seth Meyers' Late Night may be on summer vacation but the news keeps rolling. So, the host has launched a version of his popular deep dive segment "A Closer Look" as a video podcast series during the break.

A Closer Look: Out of Office is now streaming on YouTube, Peacock, and major podcast platforms. For the series, Meyers catches up with supervising writer/producer Sal Gentile on a video call to unpack the last current affairs.

"You had another name which I did really like," Gentile says in the first episode. "A Closer Look: Proof of Life, to show people we're still alive. Kind of like the way Mitch McConnell releases a new photo."

For the first episode, Meyers and Gentile explore Donald Trump's Air Force One catering cart switcheroo, and the Department of Justice's push to revive the case of vandalism concerning the controversially renovated Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.

Apparently Meyers saw the word "vacation" and thought, I'll pack my podcast equipment.
