For over a decade, we've been in a Wallace & Gromit drought. It's been 16 years since the franchise's last short, A Matter of Loaf and Death, and 19 since its first feature film, the Academy Award–winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. That's a long time to be apart from two of Britain's greatest treasures.
Thankfully, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl is here to put an end to this international crisis. The new film from Aardman Animations and Netflix reunites us with the beloved Claymation duo, and the results hit as hard as a comforting cheese platter.
SEE ALSO: 'Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl' teaser: Feathers McGraw is back! What's Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl about? Credit: Courtesy of NetflixDirected by Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham, Vengeance Most Fowl begins with the return of a familiar face: that of Feathers McGraw, the penguin (and criminal mastermind) who attempted to steal a precious diamond in 1993's The Wrong Trousers. Thanks to cheese-loving inventor Wallace (voiced by Ben Whitehead) and his loyal beagle Gromit, Feathers ended up behind bars in a local zoo, plotting his revenge.
Meanwhile, over at 62 West Wallaby Street, Wallace has been puttering away on a slew of new inventions, including a smart gnome named Norbot (voiced by Reece Shearsmith). Gromit is already perturbed by Wallace's reliance on his many inventions, but Norbot is the last straw. Not only does he ruin Gromit's carefully tended garden, he also appears to be replacing Gromit as Wallace's right-hand man.
SEE ALSO: 42 movies you'll want to see this fallThe threat of replacement is pretty harrowing — and resonant with current fears of AI replacing artists — but things go from bad to worse when Feathers McGraw, genius that he is, manages to hack Norbot and turn him down a dark path. With an army of angry Norbot customers and suspicious police officers breathing down Wallace's neck, it's up to Gromit to save the day and defeat Feathers once more.
Wallace and Gromit are charming as ever in Vengeance Most Fowl. Credit: Courtesy of NetflixWhile Vengeance Most Fowl doesn't quite hit the highs of The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, in part because of its reliance on The Wrong Trousers over a brand-new story, the film is still a delightful romp in all ways. Silliness reigns supreme here, with Vengeance Most Fowl's smallest details — including a deluge of puns and a cheese-themed captcha — just as likely to send you into orbit as its madcap set pieces, which involve everything from boats to office chairs.
Wallace and Gromit's dynamic remains charming as well, with a beleaguered Gromit once again cleaning up after the often-oblivious Wallace's mess. Beyond this central pairing, characters new and old add further layers to Vengeance Most Fowl. Feathers McGraw continues to prove his villainy and ingenuity, making him the perfect foil for Wallace and Gromit. The Curse of the Were-Rabbit's Chief Inspector Mackintosh (voiced by Peter Kay) returns as well, his bumbling ineptitude a source of many laughs. Joining him is PC Mukherjee (voiced by Lauren Patel), a new police officer who may be the most competent character in the film. (Human character, that is.)
Vengeance Most Fowl takes a stand against AI.But it's Norbot who makes the biggest splash in Vengeance Most Fowl, bursting on screen with his glossy red cheeks and a ditty about tidying up that will surely get stuck in your head. On top of providing some of Vengeance Most Fowl's best moments, like an absurd charging sequence that understandably drives Gromit to extremes, Norbot's presence also gets at the film's key messaging about the dangers of using AI and tech to replace human creation and connection.
That messaging comes through right from the start of Vengeance Most Fowl, with the sheer number of Wallace's inventions creating distance between him and Gromit. The worst culprit? The Pet-O-Matic, a dog-petting machine that removes any contact between man and his best friend, leaving Gromit feeling farther from his master than ever. Meanwhile, Wallace hopes Gromit will "embrace tech" — even namedropping AI to prove a point.
Norbot takes these themes to further extremes. When we first see Gromit's garden, it's a colorful wonderland brimming with personality. By the time Norbot is done with it, though, it's become devoid of any personality, its variety of flowers and textures sanded down to smooth lawns and cubed topiaries. Watching it, it's hard not to think of so-called "AI art," which plunders the work of other artists and lacks any soul of its own. Vengeance Most Fowl is the first Wallace & Gromit film to come out after the rise of AI, and it's clear from the garden scene alone it already has a lot of thoughts on the subject.
The reason Wallace sics Norbot on Gromit's garden in the first place is because he thinks Gromit finds the manual labor of tending to his plants tedious. But for Gromit, whom we glimpse in small, peaceful moments of gardening, the process is the point. And it's hard to think of a filmmaking form where this emphasis on process resonates more than Claymation itself, Wallace & Gromit's bread and butter.
Claymation and stop-motion are painstaking, time-consuming journeys, but as Vengeance Most Fowl proves, their rewards are huge. Handcrafted sets and characters breathe new life and texture into the film, while Wallace's elaborate Rube Goldberg-esque inventions are boundlessly creative testaments to the time that goes into Claymation. When you're watching Vengeance Most Fowl, or any stop-motion animated movie, you're keenly aware that you're watching the culmination of years' worth of effort, just the same as when you look at Gromit's prized garden for the first time. That appreciation of effort and process is something no speedy Norbot or other AI could give you, and Vengeance Most Fowl rightfully wants you to know that.

For parents still catching up on generative artificial intelligence, the rise of the companion chatbot may still be a mystery.
In broad strokes, the technology can seem relatively harmless, compared to other threats teens can encounter online, including financial sextortion.
Using AI-powered platforms like Character.AI, Replika, Kindroid, and Nomi, teens create lifelike conversation partners with unique traits and characteristics, or engage with companions created by other users. Some are even based on popular television and film characters, but still forge an intense, individual bond with their creator.
Teens use these chatbots for a range of purposes, including to role play, explore their academic and creative interests, and to have romantic or sexually explicit exchanges.
SEE ALSO: Why teens are telling strangers their secrets onlineBut AI companions are designed to be captivating, and that's where the trouble often begins, says Robbie Torney, program manager at Common Sense Media.
The nonprofit organization recently released guidelines to help parents understand how AI companions work, along with warning signs indicating that the technology may be dangerous for their teen.
Torney said that while parents juggle a number of high-priority conversations with their teens, they should consider talking to them about AI companions as a "pretty urgent" matter.
Why parents should worry about AI companionsTeens particularly at risk for isolation may be drawn into a relationship with an AI chatbot that ultimately harms their mental health and well-being—with devastating consequences.
That's what Megan Garcia argues happened to her son, Sewell Setzer III, in a lawsuit she recently filed against Character.AI.
Within a year of beginning relationships with Character.AI companions modeled on Game of Thrones characters, including Daenerys Targaryen ("Dany"), Setzer's life changed radically, according to the lawsuit.
He became dependent on "Dany," spending extensive time chatting with her each day. Their exchanges were both friendly and highly sexual. Garcia's lawsuit generally describes the relationship Setzer had with the companions as "sexual abuse."
On occasions when Setzer lost access to the platform, he became despondent. Over time, the 14-year-old athlete withdrew from school and sports, became sleep deprived, and was diagnosed with mood disorders. He died by suicide in February 2024.
Garcia's lawsuit seeks to hold Character.AI responsible for Setzer's death, specifically because its product was designed to "manipulate Sewell – and millions of other young customers – into conflating reality and fiction," among other dangerous defects.
Jerry Ruoti, Character.AI's head of trust and safety, told the New York Times in a statement that: "We want to acknowledge that this is a tragic situation, and our hearts go out to the family. We take the safety of our users very seriously, and we're constantly looking for ways to evolve our platform."
Given the life-threatening risk that AI companion use may pose to some teens, Common Sense Media's guidelines include prohibiting access to them for children under 13, imposing strict time limits for teens, preventing use in isolated spaces, like a bedroom, and making an agreement with their teen that they will seek help for serious mental health issues.
Torney says that parents of teens interested in an AI companion should focus on helping them to understand the difference between talking to a chatbot versus a real person, identify signs that they've developed an unhealthy attachment to a companion, and develop a plan for what to do in that situation.
Warning signs that an AI companion isn't safe for your teenCommon Sense Media created its guidelines with the input and assistance of mental health professionals associated with Stanford's Brainstorm Lab for Mental Health Innovation.
While there's little research on how AI companions affect teen mental health, the guidelines draw on existing evidence about over-reliance on technology.
"A take-home principle is that AI companions should not replace real, meaningful human connection in anyone's life, and – if this is happening – it's vital that parents take note of it and intervene in a timely manner," Dr. Declan Grabb, inaugural AI fellow at Stanford's Brainstorm Lab for Mental Health, told Mashable in an email.
Parents should be especially cautious if their teen experiences depression, anxiety, social challenges or isolation. Other risk factors include going through major life changes and being male, because boys are more likely to engage in problematic tech use.
Signs that a teen has formed an unhealthy relationship with an AI companion include withdrawal from typical activities and friendships and worsening school performance, as well as preferring a chatbot to in-person company, developing romantic feelings toward it, and talking exclusively to it about problems the teen is experiencing.
Some parents may notice increased isolation and other signs of worsening mental health but not realize that their teen has an AI companion. Indeed, recent Common Sense Media research found that many teens have used at least one type of generative AI tool without their parent realizing they'd done so.
"There's a big enough risk here that if you are worried about something, talk to your kid about it." - Robbie Torney, Common Sense MediaEven if parents don't suspect that their teen is talking to an AI chatbot, they should consider talking to them about the topic. Torney recommends approaching their teen with curiosity and openness to learning more about their AI companion, should they have one. This can include watching their teen engage with a companion and asking questions about what aspects of the activity they enjoy.
Torney urges parents who notice any warning signs of unhealthy use to follow up immediately by discussing it with their teen and seeking professional help, as appropriate.
"There's a big enough risk here that if you are worried about something, talk to your kid about it," Torney says.

The new iOS update, iOS 18, gave us so much: Apple Intelligence, a more customizable Control Center and Home Screen, more emoji Tapback reactions, locking more apps behind Face ID, and more.
But one very important update could revolutionize the way you help your parents do something new on their iPhone or show your friend an Instagram post from their blocked enemy — you can now take control of someone else's screen — or let them take control of yours — when you FaceTime on a one-to-one call. Here's how.
Total TimeStep 1: FaceTime someone
Obviously, this feature only works over FaceTime. You must have the person you're calling saved in your contacts, and it must be a one-to-one FaceTime — i.e., you can't do this on a group call. Both people need to have their phones updated to iOS 18 or later.
Step 2: Share your screen
If you want to request control of someone else's screen, you'll need to share the screen first. Whoever's phone you want to actually have control over will need to share their screen. You can do this by tapping the "share" button in the top row, next to the red "x" end call button. A button will pop up asking if you'd like to share the full screen or just an app, and you'll click "share my screen."
Step 3: Request control
Now you'll see a preview of the other person's screen. Tap the window to view it, and tap the "Request Control" icon in the bottom right. The other person will accept that control, and you'll be able to control their phone.
Step 4: Cancel control
In order to cancel remote control, simply tap the "stop" button on the bottom right of the screen.
I try not to get too worked up over which TV shows get nominated or snubbed at the Emmys, but there's one omission over the past few years that's really made my blood boil. How in the world has HBO's Somebody Somewhere, now in its third and final season, never cleaned up in the Best Comedy category? Adding insult to injury, this critically acclaimed show has never even been nominated. (Thank goodness it won a Peabody in 2024; otherwise, I'd really think I was going crazy.)
SEE ALSO: 40 shows we can't wait to see this fallThe answer likely lies in the show's low profile. Somebody Somewhere is a slice-of-life comedy built on subtle heartbreaks and successes, starring actors who aren't household names. (Although after this show, they should be.) Heck, I wouldn't blame you if you hadn't heard of it until now. But Somebody Somewhere's lack of flashiness or big name guest stars should in no way discount it from being considered one of the best comedies on TV. The emotional authenticity it has built over its first two seasons is nothing short of monumental — and it only gets better in Season 3.
What's Somebody Somewhere Season 3 about? Bridget Everett, Jeff Hiller, and Murray Hill in "Somebody Somewhere." Credit: Sandy Morris / HBOCo-created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, Somebody Somewhere's third season brings us right back to Manhattan, Kansas, where Sam (Bridget Everett, also an executive producer) is grappling with big changes to the community she's built up over the past two seasons. Her newly divorced sister Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) is in girlboss mode, selling her explicit novelty pillows, growing her event-planning business, and dating around. She and Sam are also renting out their parents' old house to a kindly Icelandic man of few words, whom they just refer to as Iceland (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson).
Elsewhere, Sam's friends are all coupled up. Her best friend Joel (Jeff Hiller) is moving in with his boyfriend Brad (Tim Bagley), while the incredibly named Fred Rococo (legendary drag king Murray Hill) faces pressure to correct some unhealthy lifestyle habits from his wife Susan (Jennifer Mudge). With everyone in her life making big changes, Sam feels more behind than ever before — especially when Susan implies that Sam brings people down.
Thankfully, as it does in its prior seasons, Somebody Somewhere Season 3 teases out a new path of emotional growth for Sam and those around her, one that strengthens her bonds to others and maybe even points to a love story down the line.
SEE ALSO: The 13 best TV shows of 2024 (so far) Somebody Somewhere Season 3 is all about GAAO: Growth Against All Odds. Bridget Everett in "Somebody Somewhere." Credit: Sandy Morris / HBOEverett, Bos, and Thureen have spoken about how the theme for Somebody Somewhere Season 3 is "GAAO: Growth Against All Odds," and while that especially applies to Sam, it's true across the board. For example, Joel and Brad know they love each other, but now they have to get accustomed to living together, and all the small questions that come with it. Whose way of loading the dishwasher is best? Should they put pictures on the refrigerator? Do kitchen appliances belong on the counter? Sure, these may seem like inconsequential concerns, but Somebody Somewhere builds them out into larger questions of how Joel and Brad see themselves as a couple. Will these compromises — such as Joel going to Brad's church and Bible study — chip away at their individual identities? Hiller and Bagley will break your heart and sew it back up in almost all their scenes, their openness making Joel and Brad into one of TV's most compelling couples.
Speaking of great TV relationships, it's remarkable to see just how far Tricia and Sam have come in the span of three seasons. From being at each other's throats in Season 1 to supporting one another wholeheartedly in Season 3 — while still getting on each other's nerves, of course — these are TV sisters for the ages. One scene in particular, where the two discuss their late sister Holly and their worries that they aren't grieving correctly, is just one of many scenes this season that will get the tears flowing. (Special shout-outs are also in order for a soul-baring Thanksgiving dinner, and for a surprise musical performance from Brad and Sam.)
And of course, we can't talk about Somebody Somewhere without highlighting the relationship at its heart, the friendship between Sam and Joel. These two have certainly been through a lot together, but in Season 3, they encounter a new challenge: distance. As Joel embarks on a new stage in his life and Sam feels stagnant in her own, how will the two find time for each other? Fret not, they certainly do, but the occasional missed call or lapse in communication between them is enough to induce heartache of the highest degree. The only cure is watching them work to keep their friendship alive, bolstered by the always-impeccable chemistry between Everett and Hiller. Seriously, one minute these two will have you sobbing your eyes out over discussions of botched dreams, and the next they'll have you rolling with laughter, thanks to the show's perfectly deployed potty humor.
That's the essence of Somebody Somewhere in a nutshell, a show that takes all of life's ups and downs in stride. In any other show, a big development like a successful business pitch, a disheartening trip to the doctor, or an encounter with a homophobic high school bully would cause a commotion and take up an entire episode. That's not a bad thing in itself, but Somebody Somewhere simply plays by a different set of rules, taking these developments and weaving them quietly into these characters' lives to inform their actions. It feels as true to life as TV can get, and it's an absolute gift we've gotten to experience it.
Somebody Somewhere premieres Oct. 27 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max.
