iOS 18 adds new built-in ‘white noise’ sounds that can help you sleep, including fire

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 14:11

Your iPhone has the ability to play "white noise" audio with built-in sounds that can be accessed via the Accessibility settings. You can choose between sounds like Ocean, Rain, and Stream. (Rain is my personal favorite.)

However, with iOS 18 (which you can now test via the iOS 18 public beta), Apple added two new sounds to the library.

SEE ALSO: iOS 18: 4 'Apple Intelligence' features you won't see until 2025 iOS 18 adds new built-in 'white noise' audio

While testing the iOS 18 public beta, you'll find two new white-noise sounds: "Night" and "Fire."

"Night" features chirping crickets with the subtle rustle of leaves. "Fire" appears to mimic the harmonious crackle of a fireplace.

These sounds are not specifically designed to be for sleep, but we have previously recommended the feature to help iPhone users catch some Zs.

You can access the new sounds by navigating to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds. Next, ensure that "Background Sounds" is toggled on before tapping "Sound," which will lead you to the list of available sounds, including Balanced Noise, Bright Noise, Dark Noise, Ocean, Rain, and Stream.

If you plan on downloading the iOS 18 public beta, keep in mind that it's still rough-around-the-edges and not ready for primetime. Consider backing up your iPhone first or running it on a test device.

The next big iPhone update, iOS 18, is expected to launch alongside Apple's next-generation smartphone, likely the iPhone 16.

This Nintendo Switch Lite comes with 'Animal Crossing' — the additional $40 off is just icing on the cake

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 13:48

SAVE $100: Nintendo's Switch Lite console is down to one of the lowest prices we've seen it at, with Walmart selling it for $159. Not only is that a $40 discount, but this bundle comes with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of the Switch's most popular games.

Prime Day may be primarily an Amazon event, but that doesn't mean other retailers can't join in on the action. One of the best gaming deals of the day comes from Walmart, for example, which is selling the Nintendo Switch Lite with Animal Crossing: New Horizons for just $159. Compare that to the roughly $260 it would have cost to get a Switch Lite with Animal Crossing back when the game first came out — and you've got yourself a tantalizing gaming deal.

There are, of course, tons of great Switch games (including many that are currently on the way), so getting a cheap Switch Lite, even with the rumored Switch 2 on the way, could be a steal. Even if you choose not to buy any other Switch games for a while, though, Animal Crossing should keep you occupied with its unique real-time calendar features and omnipresent sense of stress-free whimsy. In our review, Kellen Beck called it a "little beacon of hope."

"Playing it makes me feel like I'm taking the video game version of a breath of fresh air, or going on a little vacation away from everything that feels like it could make me collapse into a pile of jittering slime," Beck said.

iPhone 16 Pro may finally get a pink-ish color with new 'rose' color rumor

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 13:39

Fans of pink colored smartphones, rejoice.

According to multiple Apple analysts and leakers, a rose iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is coming in September when Apple's new smartphone line launches.

This would mark the first time that a Pro model iPhone was offered in pink since the iPhone 6 line was launched with a "rose gold" color in 2015.

SEE ALSO: iPhone 16: Every single thing we know so far A 'rose' iPhone Pro on the way?

The latest source of news comes from an Apple leaker from the China-based social media platform Weibo. The supply chain leaker, known as OvO Baby Sauce OvO, says that the new color option for the iPhone 16 Pro is called "rose." The leaker also emphasized that it's not the same as the previous "rose gold" option.

This same leaker also previously claimed that the Blue Titanium-colored iPhone Pro models will likely be dropped from the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup to make room for the rose model.

According to MacRumors, this latest leak backs up a previous report from well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who said that both the iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max would be available in "black, white or silver, gray or 'Natural Titanium,' and rose."

With Apple launching a newly designed titanium device with the iPhone 15 Pro last year, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro will be the first titanium "rose" colored iPhone.

Currently, consumers who want a pink-colored iPhone must settle for the base model iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus, which offer a light-pink finish.

Now, it seems that Apple fans who want the most premium model iPhone with all the pro features and a pink chassis will finally get their wish.

It's a feature-loaded fitness smartwatch capable of tracking your steps and calories, as well as monitoring your heart rate, sleep activity, and stress levels. The Sense 2 also has built-in GPS and a workout intensity map, letting you visualize your exercise progress.

The Fitbit Versa 4 is the newest offering from Fitbit. Our colleagues at PC Mag (owned by Mashable's parent company, Ziff Davis) tested this watch and called it an "excellent fitness-focused smartwatch" that has design improvements over the last generation. If you've been mulling over whether to get a Fitbit or an Apple Watch, this might be worthy of consideration.

It's officially Prime Day, and there are all kinds of treats for your ears on sale, including wireless earbuds, headphones and speakers, and noise-cancelling headphones. But we're particularly excited about one of our favorite pairs of over-ear, noise-cancelling headphones being on sale for over half off.

As of July 16, get the Beats Studio Pro noise-cancelling headphones for $169.99, $180 down from $349.99. That's a 51% discount, and a return to their lowest price ever that we haven't seen since November 2023. In other words, now is the time to buy.

SEE ALSO: The best headphones and speaker deals during Prime Day

I personally shopped and tried out several pairs of over-ear headphones a few months ago before deciding on the Beats Studio Pro, and I've been very happy with my purchase. (I liked these over both the Bose QuietComfort headphones and the Bose 700 headphones, for what it's worth.)

The Beats Studio Pro are comfortable for longtime wear and offer quality noise cancellation, so I don't hear people around me at the coffee shop or the music coming from the ceiling at the gym. Their biggest plus for me is the fact that people can still hear me well during phone calls, even when I'm outside or in noisy environments (which I often am) — this was a surprisingly tough quality to find. Plus, their one-button control center on the left ear is actually easier to remember and use than some other headphones I've tried. Their 40-hour battery life doesn't hurt, either.

Grab the Beats Studio Pro at their lowest price on record while you can.

Apple's fancy Studio Display is $300 off for Prime Day — a new all-time low

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 12:52

If you've been eyeing up Apple's premium Studio Display monitor, Amazon's Prime Day deal might just be your best opportunity. It's on sale for $1,299.99, about a 19% decrease from $1,599. That's an all-time-low price.

Granted, because this is Apple we're talking about, that's still a pretty hefty price tag for a monitor. The Apple Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K Retina screen with 600 nits of brightness and support for 1 billion colors.

The Apple Studio Display performs well but is mostly geared toward Apple loyalists due to its pricing, according to a review from PCMag, which is owned by Mashable's publisher, Ziff Davis. With the price now discounted for Prime Day, perhaps it's worth revisiting a purchase for those in the market for a premium monitor.

Over 1TB of data stolen from Disney, allegedly by anti-AI hacktivists

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 12:21

A hacker group called "NullBulge" claims to have stolen over 1TB of data from Disney's internal Slack channels. As first reported by The Wall Street Journal, the hackers allegedly leaked messages and files from nearly 10,000 channels, including info on proprietary code, unreleased media projects, and more sensitive data.

SEE ALSO: Disney hacked, apparently by angry Club Penguin fans

According to the WSJ, NullBulge is a hacktivist group protesting against AI-generated art. The group claims to have accessed Disney files with the help of an employee. The massive trove of files was first spotted in BreachForums on Thursday before swiftly being taken down — however, the leak still exists on mirror sites across the internet.

At the time of writing, it is unclear what exactly is in the leak's contents. According to the WSJ, who viewed some of the files, some of the leaks pertained to internal conversations about software development and website maintenance. Additionally, the WSJ saw discussions of potential hires along with unrelated topics, like images of employee dogs. The data goes as far back as 2019.

In a statement to several outlets, a spokesperson for the media conglomerate said that the company was "investigating the matter."

On top of the information taken from Disney's Slack channels, it seems that the hacker group also doxxed a Disney employee who allegedly cooperated with them and enabled the leak — including personal identifying details, medical records, and even employee access passwords. This was apparently in retaliation for cutting off communication with the group.

SEE ALSO: Viral YouTube video lambasts Disney's Star Wars hotel via a 4-hour opus

While this is not the first time Disney has been hacked this year, over 1TB of data is still a lot. However, the good news for Disney is that this hack doesn't seem to be on the level of the 2014 Sony Pictures hack which shut the company down for days, caused a movie to be pulled from theaters, and resulted in co-CEO Amy Pascal stepping down.

With all the money Disney has invested in Marvel, Hulu, and ESPN, it may merit a sigh of relief that the hack is, at the time of writing, basically just mundane coding discussions and pictures of cute dogs.

TikTok partners with Eventbrite to sell tickets directly on your FYP

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 12:00

TikTok has doubled down on ticketing directly on the platform with a partnership with Eventbrite.

Now creators can link an Eventbrite event in their videos and users can purchase tickets to the event without ever leaving TikTok. The link will appear above a video's caption.

SEE ALSO: Internet Princess Rayne Fisher-Quann left TikTok in search of something beyond the algorithm

The integration of Eventbrite into the social media platform stands to benefit creators, like stand up comics, who make their income through live shows. It streamlines the process of event promotion removing the "link in bio" middle man.

"We're giving creators a simple way to jump into trending conversations and bring online communities together in real life through events they’re passionate about," Ted Dworkin, chief product officer at Eventbrite, said in a press release. "With this partnership, millions of people can now easily discover and attend the best events in their cities, right from where the conversation is happening – on TikTok."

TikTok first entered the ticketing space through a partnership with Ticketmaster that first launched in the U.S. in 2022. In Dec. 2023 it rolled out to more markets including the UK, Ireland, Australia, Germany, France, Canada, and Mexico.

The partnership furthers TikTok's use as a search engine as users will be able to search for videos about Eventbrite events. But it ultimately serves to keep users on TikTok for as long as possible. The social media platform only allows very few things to be directly linked in a video including Ticketmaster tickets, TikTok Shop products, Buzzfeed Quizzes, Rotten Tomatoes, and Whisk. It still neglects to allow for articles to be linked, which could an opportunity for spreading rampant misinformation.

Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite gets a comically small price drop for Prime Day 2024

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 11:59

SAVE $15: Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite is on sale for Prime Day for $134.99, a 10% drop-off from the full price of $149.99. That $15 drop pales in comparison to last year's Prime Day sale, which saw the same device go for $55 off.

Prime Day is fully upon us, so naturally, that means Kindles will be discounted to some extent. That's definitely true of the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite, though again, it's not a massive price cut. Still, there's value here; the Paperwhite offers a bigger and brighter display than the default Kindle, as well as four additional weeks of battery life on a full charge. Not hours or days, weeks.

As far as e-readers go, it's one of the best and most popular for a reason. The Kindle Paperwhitehosts 16GB of onboard storage, but there are other Kindles you can buy with more storage if you need it.

But if all you want to do is read books with one of the best Kindle displays Amazon makes, the Kindle Paperwhite might be the way to go.

FBI took 2 days to hack Trump rally shooter's phone. Did they find anything?

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 11:49

On Monday, the FBI issued a press statement revealing that it gained access to the password-protected phone of Thomas Matthew Crook, the shooter behind an assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at the July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

However, breaking into Crook's phone didn't come without challenges. According to the New York Times, as of Sunday, the FBI had trouble breaking into his device, prompting the law enforcement agency to send the phone to the bureau's lab in Quantico, Virginia.

Two days later, the FBI cracked the phone.

What did the FBI find on the cracked phone?

Lab technicians at Quantico sifted through Crook's texts, emails, and other digital footprints, but according to the New York Times, they "did not immediately find clear evidence of a potential motive." The FBI's specialists, the publisher reports, also couldn't find any new details about the gunman's "possible connections to other people."

SEE ALSO: The FBI almost used an infamous spyware for criminal investigations

However, the investigation is still in the early stages. The FBI isn't just analyzing his phone, but all of his electronic devices. The law enforcement agency is also looking into Crook's social media activity and browser history.

It's unclear which phone Crook had in his possession when the FBI obtained it. Plus, how the Quantico technicians bypassed Crook's password-protected phone is nebulous, too.

According to The Verge, which cited a security researcher named Cooper Quintin, law enforcement agencies typically use Cellebrite, a mobile device extraction tool, to break into locked phones. Quintin speculated that the field office in Pennsylvania likely didn't have the advanced phone-cracking tool needed to hack Crook's device, so they sent it to Quantico.

Again, we don't know which phone Crook had, but if it was an iPhone, the FBI would have to rely on its own resources to crack the device. As The Verge pointed out, in the past, Apple has pushed back on the FBI's requests to bypass security protections. In 2015, for example, Apple refused to help the bureau break into the iPhone of the San Bernadino shooter. In the end, the FBI had to enlist the help of an Australian security firm to unlock the shooter's phone.

Mashable reached out to the law enforcement agency for comment; we will update this article once we get a response.

Searching for Prime Day skincare deals? SolaWave is one of our favorite beauty tech brands (as well as TikTok's) and its Prime Day deals truly deliver. The Bye Acne Spot Treatment device, specifically, is a standout Lightning deal you'll definitely want to add to your cart.

The Bye Acne device is regularly $69, but on day one of Prime Day, it's down to just $39.99. That's 42% in savings. We saw it drop down 50% during the holiday season, but this is definitely the best SolaWave deal we've seen since. Of course, like most Prime Day deals, you'll have to be a Prime member to snag it. Plus, as a Lightning deal, there's a limited supply of these babies at Amazon. So, if you want to ensure you get the best price, grab it ASAP.

It's not our favorite of SolaWave's offerings (that honor would go to the celeb-favorite skincare wand), but it still has its place in a beauty routine. It uses the power of light therapy to deliver pain-free acne treatment. When Mashable's Bethany Allard tested it out, she found that it would likely work best "for someone who gets a nasty pimple or two regularly and has the cash to spare." In other words, it's better for spot treatment (hence the name) than for ongoing breakouts. At just $39.99, however, we're definitely more inclined to recommend the device.

If you're on the hunt for more SolaWave Prime Day deals, just head over to the brand's own website, where everything else (including the skincare wand) is currently 40% off with the code PRIME40.

Apple's stylish, over-ear headphones are super popular, though perhaps not the first choice for strict audiophiles. Still, for most users, it's a good option — if you can afford it. Mashable's review of the headphones read: "When it comes down to it, the AirPods Max check off almost all the boxes for what makes an excellent pair of headphones: great sound quality, ideal battery life, easy controls, and a stylish design."

Do Amazon Prime Day deals change? What you need to know

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 07:57

Do Prime Day deals change? It’s a common question people ask on Prime Day.

There are so many deals happening at once, it can be hard to figure out which will linger throughout the sale and which requires a quick decision in order to claim.

The answer is yes, they do change! There are two key factors to consider are whether the item is part of a lightning deal or whether the item is in high demand.

With lightning deals, you could have as little as a few moments to decide whether or not you want to purchase them. It requires you to keep a close eye on the site and be prepared to act.

For the non-lightning deals, it all comes down to common sense. Super cheap 4K TVs, deep-discount gaming consoles, and other in-demand tech have the potential to go quickly, so act accordingly.

A great example is this TCL 65-inch 4K television. During the Prime Day sale, you can get it for $398, which is a 43% discount from its normal price.

The first hip-hop song beamed into space? Congrats Missy Elliott.

Mashable - Tue, 07/16/2024 - 07:00

Missy Elliott can officially boast having the first ever hip-hop song beamed into space. Add it to the shelf with all those Grammys, Hall of Fame inductions, and tens of millions of record sales, huh?

Lyrics from the queen of rap's "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" — her iconic debut solo single from 1997 — were transmitted about 158 million miles (254 million kilometres) away from Earth to Venus on Friday at 10:05 a.m. PT. And according to NASA, it took just 14 minutes to get there, travelling at the speed of light.

The song was sent by the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, through the space agency's large telecommunication service, the Deep Space Network (DSN). It was physically transmitted by the DSN's colossal DSS-13 radio dish antenna (nicknamed Venus, what?) at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow.

Elliott, who is (fittingly) currently on her Out of This World tour, celebrated the moment on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

"My song 'The Rain' has officially been transmitted all the way to Venus, the planet that symbolizes strength, beauty and empowerment," she wrote, "The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning 👽👽"

It's the second song NASA has beamed into space using the DSN, following The Beatles' "Across the Universe" which embodied exactly that in 2008.

The collaboration with Elliot was pitched by Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division at NASA HQ's Office of Communications in Washington. "Both space exploration and Missy Elliott’s art have been about pushing boundaries," said Brown in a press statement. "Missy has a track record of infusing space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting."

Part of NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program, the DSN uses its massive antennas to send radio signals into deep space. It's made for communicating with spacecrafts, tracking missions, and receiving that sweet, sweet deep space data — NASA tracks the legendary Voyager 1 spacecraft using the DSN.

What better moment than this to turn up "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)"? Like there's a bad moment...
