Apple is reportedly still working on smart glasses of some kind

Mashable - 7 hours 25 min ago

Apple's augmented reality glasses may be dead (or at least on hold), but it sounds like the company is still working on a different kind of smart glasses.

Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter at Bloomberg (via 9to5Mac) reported that Apple is continuing work on a pair of smart glasses, just a couple of months after a different Bloomberg report indicated Apple's AR glasses were not happening anymore. According to Gurman, the glasses that are currently being worked on are more akin to Meta's Ray-Ban collaboration, in that they will be filled with tech, but will stop short of offering real augmented reality displays.

SEE ALSO: Apple plans to produce all U.S.-sold iPhones in India, report claims

Gurman stated that they would be powered by Apple Intelligence and could "analyze the surrounding environment and feed information to the wearer," though to what degree it can do that is still unknown. The Meta version of this concept is largely influencer-focused and allows for glasses-based photography and Instagram live-streaming, though apparently Apple is not entirely committed to allowing photography on its glasses yet for privacy reasons.

At any rate, it'll probably be at least a couple of years before we see the fruits of all this labor, if we see it at all. Maybe the smart glasses dream will live on.

Review: Are Tumble washable rugs too good to be true?

Mashable - 12 hours 49 min ago

I love rugs. Anyone who's ever seen The Big Lebowski knows that a good one can really bring a room together. The only problem is, I have a dog that sheds, drools, and makes every other kind of dog-related mess you can think of. That basically means that any time I get a new rug, it's ruined in a short amount of time. Huge bummer.

So, when I came across Tumble's rugs on both my TikTok and Instagram feeds, I knew I had to try one out for myself. Why? They promise that their rugs are machine washable (when it's not possible to spot clean), spill-resistant, comfortable, and a good fit for homes with pets. Music to my ears.

But are Tumble's claims too good to be true? I set out to find the answer, and after about a month of use, I walked away from my experience with Tumble very impressed. My Tumble rug is one of my favorite additions to my apartment in recent memory.

SEE ALSO: Honest review of Ruggable: Are the washable rugs worth the price? What I loved about my Tumble rug

My time with Tumble started strong. Right out of the box, I was really happy with how the rug looked — I already knew what design I'd be getting ahead of time, but it looked even better in person. I went for the Wren rug in Olive and Sand, which is a cool take on the trendy checkerboard design that fits perfectly into my home's aesthetic. The colors are vibrant, and the materials feel high-quality.

The rug and included rug pad came neatly rolled up in the shipping box, along with a small envelope containing setup and care instructions, as well as some adhesive pads. I placed the quarter-inch-thick rug pad down first, right where my kitchen table lives. Now, I expected to throw the rug on top and call it a day, but Tumble goes the extra mile here. Using a corner-pocket design on the bottom part of the rug, you can slide the rug pad into each pocket, ensuring that the pad won't slide out of position.

After that, I slapped the adhesive pads to the bottom to lock everything in place. I tried my best to move it, but the rug wouldn't budge, and it's stayed that way for an entire month. As an aside, I also thought the rug was quite comfortable to walk on — the fabric isn't a plush material, but it's still soft to the touch, and the rug pad below it gives it a nice bounce. So, if you need a runner or office rug, I can definitely recommend Tumble.

The rug's surface is still looking great even after a month of heavy traffic. Credit: Dylan Haas / Mashable Tumble rugs pass the stain test

The whole point of a washable rug is to, you know, wash it. And I definitely got to stress-test Tumble's stain resistance.

Fortunately for you, my dog decided to throw up her dinner on the rug just one week into my test. Usually, I wouldn't enjoy cleaning up dog puke, but this time was different — it was an opportunity to put Tumble's machine-washable claims to the test. I wiped up the excess and carefully lifted the rug away from the rug pad. Then, I chucked the rug into my washing machine and started a cold cycle. Once that was done, I did a quick inspection of the rug and my machine to make sure there wasn't any damage, but it still looked great, and the stains my pet added to it were totally gone.

After a quick tumble dry, I placed the rug back in its spot. I was very happy with the results; it looked as good as new.

SEE ALSO: The Ninja Swirl is even better and more fun than the original Creami

For smaller messes, clean-up is even easier. The rug is made using spill-resistant materials, so whenever a liquid hits the fabric, it'll start to pill up instead of working its way into the fibers. Anytime something got on the rug, I was able to quickly wipe it up with a damp paper towel and move on with my day. I even spilled part of a matcha latte on it at one point, and it didn't stain, which felt like a small miracle.

What I didn't love about my Tumble rug

My Tumble rug experience was not without its flaws, though they've been pretty easy to overlook. For one, I didn't love that I could see the rug pad under the rug. It wasn't sticking out the sides thanks to the rug's underside pockets, but there was a noticeably raised area where the pad sits, and I couldn't mask it no matter what I tried. Not a huge deal in my opinion, but you've been warned. Finally, my rug did start showing very small signs of wear and tear on the sides, but this will happen to any rug you put down in high-traffic areas like a kitchen, playroom, or hallway.

A very small amount of fraying has started on the sides of the rug. Credit: Dylan Haas / Mashable The rug pad shows through the actual rug just a bit. Can you see it? Credit: Dylan Haas / Mashable Are Tumble rugs worth the price?

Tumble's rugs aren't cheap. The brand's smallest size is priced at $119 (the one that I tested), and their largest sizes run well over the $400 mark. But if you're more concerned about durability and convenience over luxuriousness, I think Tumble is well worth the investment. And that's especially if you have pets or children running around. One day, when you're wiping up yet another pee puddle or rogue glass of orange juice with ease, you'll be thankful you shelled out for a Tumble rug.

Stop watching, start doing (it): These dating sites are way better than porn

Mashable - 13 hours 44 min ago

Would it surprise you to learn that Pornhub pulls in enough eyeballs to rank among the most-visited websites on the entire internet?

According to SimilarWeb (an analytics platform for websites and apps), adult websites like Xvideos and Pornhub get an average of 693.5 million and 639.6 million monthly visitors, respectively. To put that number in perspective, these porn giants often outrank sites like Netflix and Amazon (though not ChatGPT).

But if you're itching to take things a step further than just watching and want to live out some of those fantasies IRL, then exploring Pornhub alternatives like BeNaughty, HRNY (formerly UberHorny), and other NSFW dating sites could connect you with someone who's on the same page.

SEE ALSO: How to unblock and watch Pornhub for free

These dating sites aren't perfect, and some of them get pretty raunchy. But if you're tired of getting off all by your lonesome (goon caves can get pretty lonely), then you try some of our favorite X-rated dating sites as an alternative to Pornhub. Here's the scoop on what you're getting yourself into.

The lowdown on NSFW dating sites

Keep in mind that the term “dating” in this situation basically means a one-night stand, a threesome, or an ongoing sex buddy situation, and not a long-term partner. Of course, if you're searching for X-rated and NSFW dating sites, we're guessing that's not a problem.

Take note: NSFW dating sites don't operate without mutual consent, boundary-setting, and respect. When building out your profile, be specific and honest about your intentions and what you’re looking for so you can find people who genuinely match up with you and your interests or fetishes.

SEE ALSO: The top 10 porn sites to visit when you want to get off

And if you like the instant gratification and virtual aspect of internet porn, you can also try cam sites and sexting apps that let you meet and chat with adult performers right away.

What else to know before using NSFW dating sites

Besides not giving away any personal information, especially for things like anonymous encounters on cam or sexting sites, know the risks when it comes to sending nude or partially nude photos containing identifying details like your face or tattoos. While it’s against the law in many places to circulate private sexual images, that doesn’t stop people from doing it.

SEE ALSO: Best sex toys for couples looking to switch things up between the sheets

Like Pornhub, most of these sites are free to access, with some offering various levels of paid membership fees to unlock bonus features. Others, like Tinder and Grindr, are free to use. So, if you're tired of seeing the same content over and over again at the hub, check out these Pornhub alternatives for NSFW encounters.

Before clicking through, be warned: NSFW content awaits.

Watching The Last of Us? Heres how to play the video games that inspired it.

So, uh, season two of The Last of Us really started out with a bang, huh? (Beware, that link contains spoilers for the season's second episode.)

If you're as obsessed as we are with HBO's adaptation of the video game franchise with the same name, then we highly recommend playing through the source material. Seriously, if you haven't played either of these games, consider it required reading (or playing, we guess).

SEE ALSO: 'The Last of Us' Season 2 review: Joel and Ellie's return devastates and infuriates

If you're not a gamer but you're ready to experience The Last of Us in its original form, we've put together a handy guide for how you can do exactly that in the most efficient, cost-effective way.

What console can I play The Last of Us games on?

Up until recently, The Last of Us series had been playable exclusively on PlayStation consoles. Now, the PlayStation 5 versions of the game can also be played on PC, including The Last of Us Complete, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and The Last of Us Part I. The older editions of the games — The Last of Us Part II and The Last of Us Remastered — are playable on both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

How can you play The Last of Us series on Xbox? You can't. For the forseeable future, both Xbox and Nintendo players are out of luck when it comes to TLOU.

Welcome to Seattle. Credit: Naughty Dog What are all the editions of The Last of Us?

There are a few different versions of The Last of Us floating around out there. He's a breakdown of what each edition includes so you know which one to buy:

The Last of Us Complete ($99.99): This is the most complete version of the series you're going to find, and it's exactly what you'll want to get if you've never played the games before. It includes the PlayStation 5 (and PC) versions of The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us: Left Behind, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, as well as the No Return roguelike mode that came bundled with the sequel's PS5 remaster. You'll also get the bonus features that came with both games, including Lost Levels, developer commentary, and more. There's a physical collector's edition of Complete as well, but it's currently sold out at the time of this writing.

The Last of Us Part II ($39.99): Even if you don't have a PlayStation 5, you can still play the original, non-remastered version of The Last of Us Part II. This is the base game, so it doesn't include any bonus features, but it's definitely the most inexpensive iteration.

The Last of Us Part I ($69.99): The most up-to-date version of the first The Last of Us game for PlayStation 5 and PC, which comes with the Left Behind DLC and a few other in-game extras. If you've only ever played the older version, it's worth hopping into this one to experience the story with a fresh coat of paint.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered ($49.99): The most up-to-date version of The Last of Us Part II for PlayStation 5 and PC, which includes No Return and the bonus features we outlined in Complete. If you've already played the first game and still need to play the second, but don't want to spend $100, this is the version you want.

The Last of Us Remastered ($19.99): The PlayStation 4 version of the original game, which also comes bundled with the Left Behind DLC.

The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC ($9.99): Finally, if you haven't played the DLC and want to check it off your list, you can buy it as a standalone game. Absolutely play this if you want the full TLOU experience.

Are there any other ways to play?

Finally, a PlayStation Plus Extra membership will gain you access to the PS Plus Game Catalog, which is an Xbox Game-Pass-esque collection of titles that you can download and play whenever you want. At the time of this writing, The Last of Us Remastered (which also comes with Left Behind) is included in the catalog. It's the PlayStation 4 version of the game, but it's still playable on PS5.

A tariff survival guide to buying refurbished smartphones, TVs, and headphones

Mashable - 13 hours 49 min ago

Before tariffs get you down, brush up on the best places to buy refurbished electronics. And keep checking Mashable for our latest tariff news and explainers, from delayed Nintendo Switch 2 preorders to reports of iPhone 16 panic buying.

Do you feel a primal urge to buy the newest iPhone every year? That feeling was dangerous even when tariffs weren't a thing. But it's becoming a nasty habit to have with the fast-approaching May 2 reciprocal tariff deadline. President Donald Trump's tariff policy has caused economic chaos and rising prices, and consumer tech is one of the hardest-hit industries.

Though we don't know exactly how tariffs will affect the price of iPhones, laptops, and other gadgets, they could have wide-ranging effects. It's likely that most of us will have to upgrade or replace a device at least once during this extra expensive time.

SEE ALSO: The 2025 guide to recycling electronics, beauty empties, and clothing

Burning "stock market today" into your Google search history and trying to shop accordingly probably isn't a sustainable approach to saving money. Rather, flip to the most important page in the tariff survival guide: Buying refurbished.

It makes so much sense when you think about it. Tariffs and related policy changes could quickly infiltrate the tech space like cordyceps in The Last of Us. Electronic devices are composed of so many different materials, many of which are produced in countries facing new levies on imports to the U.S. So, buying a device that's already in circulation is one surefire way to fly under the radar of these tariffs. Plus, you get bonus environmental points.

What are the advantages of buying refurbished?

FWIW, being a savvy refurbished shopper is a skill everyone should be honing, regardless of the current price hike situation. If you do it right, buying refurbished is not only an underrated money-saving hack but also a simple way to be a more sustainable consumer. Refurbishing electronics extends their lifespan by years and lowers the number of electronics leaking toxins into the ground through landfills. (This is what Julia Fox was talking about when she stepped out rocking a CD Walkman as a purse in honor of the Right to Repair movement.)

Refurbished items are naturally priced lower than brand new items, but if you're looking for further discounts, we have a running list of refurbished tech deals, too.

Below, we're outlining the best places to buy refurbished electronics online. We'll compare general retailers that sell a variety of devices and brands, then dive into the refurbished programs offered by big brands like Apple and Dyson. We've also noted warranty and return information.

What is Woot? This Amazon-owned daily deals retailer offers steep, short-term discounts on both brand-new and refurbished items. The unusually low prices are often joined by a timer counting down the number of hours you have left to score the item at that price. Plus, because of the Amazon connection, Prime members can get free shipping with their Woot purchases.

Woot's inventory is as, let's say, whimsical as the website's name and overall vibes. The electronics selection spans from smartphones to TVs and vacuums to cameras (both security and photography), with refurbished gadgets from brands like Apple, MSI, Dyson, and JBL.

But gadgets are hardly Woot's only specialty — the rest of the site is filled to the brim with the most random assortment of deals, from discounted fancy cookware to boxes of La Croix and weirdly cheap Hunter rain boots. It has the chaotic energy of a Target clearance section, but the items are legit.

All refurbished devices on Back Market's virtual shelves have gone through Back Market's Verified Refurbished System. Many listings also have devices available in Fair, Good, or Excellent condition at different price points — you can decide whether you want to pay $199 or upwards of $250 for a refurbished Nintendo Switch.

Wondering how to buy refurbished iPhones? People are pretty concerned about what'll happen to iPhone prices in the wake of tariffs, and understandably so. China has been saddled with a particularly stiff reciprocal tariff rate compared to other countries, and it's estimated that 80 percent of iPhones are manufactured in China. Though Apple itself hasn't given any official word, the effects of tariffs on iPhones seem imminent. (The story is probably similar for other Apple devices.)

You could hang onto the delusion that a Made in America iPhone will exist anytime soon and cost a normal amount of money. You should heavily consider buying a refurbished iPhone. If you'd prefer to still buy your most precious device through the brand itself, Apple's own Certified Refurbished market is probably the most exhaustive brand-specific refurbished marketplace on the internet.

SEE ALSO: iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 15: How are they different?

Buying your renewed Apple device ensures genuine Apple parts and fully-tested functionality up to Apple's own standards. Delivery and returns are free, and trade-in credits are possible with an eligible device. Apple doesn't really offer direct discounts on any of its products on its website, but it does claim that going the refurbished route saves up to 15% compared to buying new.

What can you buy? There are tabs for iPhone, Mac, iPad, Watch, AirPods, Apple TV, HomePod, and accessories like the Apple Pencil.

Buying refurbished from Nintendo

The Nintendo Switch 2 is the console of the hour, and not just because a new Mario Kart is afoot. It was barely two days after the highly-awaited handheld was announced that a second announcement came: Nintendo had to pause Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. because of tariffs.

For many impatient folks considering buying a Switch 2, it might be worthwhile to just buy a refurbished OG Switch from Nintendo instead. This won't be helpful to anyone who already has a perfectly fine Switch at home, or anyone who specifically wants to play new games that'll only work on the new Switch. But say you're simply trying to replace the broken Switch you currently have — the Nintendo Store has several refurbished systems on hand for way less than the original asking price, including OLED models. Cosmetic defects are possible, but they've all been restored and verified to be fully functional.

What can you buy? You won't find the Switch 2, but you can buy the original console, the Switch OLED, extra controllers, and other accessories.

Buying refurbished from Samsung

Samsung doesn't rely as heavily on China for the production of its smartphones as Apple does, so it's not as affected by the aftershock of Trump's reciprocal tariff feud with China. But Samsung's biggest manufacturing countries (like Vietnam) are still being hit with substantial tariff rates, so it's quite possible that Samsung products will get more expensive as a result.

Luckily, Samsung has been perfecting its reuse and recycling game for years, at least when it comes to its Galaxy phones. Samsung Certified Re-Newed Smartphones have been crafted with new batteries and are eligible for trade-in credits up to $250 when you trade in an eligible smartphone. Renewed phones as new as the 2024 Galaxy S24 Ultra are available on Samsung's website. For other Samsung products, like Galaxy Watches or Galaxy Tablets, Back Market and Best Buy have more options.

Buying refurbished from Dyson

Vacuums, hair styling tools, fans — all items that you'd probably feel better about buying secondhand if you had the assurance that their filters and motors were professionally cleaned. The Dyson Renewed Outlet has a handful of refurbished options in each of those categories at any given time. All are already priced anywhere from $50 to $250 lower than the MSRP or even common sale price of the brand new versions, but Dyson often tacks extra discounts on as well. Bonus: Everything ships in brand-new recyclable packaging.

Amazons massive book sale competes with indie sellers on Independent Bookstore Day

Mashable - Sat, 04/26/2025 - 12:40

Readers, patronizing their local shops for annual Independent Bookstore Day, are once again participating, perhaps unknowingly, in a competition between indie book stores and commerce giant Amazon.

The holiday, created 12 years ago to promote local businesses in the same vein as Record Store Day, has become a nationwide boon to independent sellers, including more than 1,600 participating stores and online retailers. Taking place every year on the last Saturday of April, it's now supported by the American Booksellers Association (ABA) and saw record online interest in 2024 amid mass increases in book sales.

SEE ALSO: LinkedIn and Adobe announce partnership to help creators protect their work against AI

But as stores and shoppers geared up and stuffed their carts full of books in anticipation of this year's event, Amazon simultaneously announced its multi-day annual book sale, taking place between April 23–28 and including massive discounts on physical and increasingly popular e-books.

Users, including many BookTok creators, were upset, calling the move an obvious attempt to steal sales using their age-old tactic of predatory pricing. Many urged fellow readers to protest Amazon's book event and purchase from a local store instead. In a statement to Fast Company, Amazon refuted the claims that the timing of their sale was intentionally chosen to undermine Independent Bookstore Day, saying, "The dates for our sale were set this year to accommodate additional participating countries.”

Still, independent bookstore supporters don't believe it was coincidence. Amazon, originating as an online book seller, still maintains literary dominance, and it isn't just about ease: Online options exist for independent book store as well, including mass marketplaces like Bookshop.org, IndieBound.org, and ThriftBooks, and the use of e-book reading apps connected to public library systems (like Libby and OverDrive) swelled over months of lockdown.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed. This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

Despite expanding into all realms of commerce, health, and even artificial intelligence over the last three decades, the company has continued to invest in its book offerings, even testing physical Amazon book storefronts. It now owns more than 80 percent of industry sales. In 2024, the ABA attempted to intervene in an ongoing Federal Trade Commission antitrust investigation, alleging that Amazon's dominance constitutes a monopoly power over book sales. The motion was denied.

Independent book stores continue to fight back, however, and have scored some important wins. In the last four years, the number of independent book stores has nearly doubled, leaning into the public's desire for community engagement and curation. Online communities are throwing their support behind local shops in turn, including Black and LGBTQ-owned businesses, unionized stores, and booksellers focused on diverse, or even banned, catalogs. Simultaneously, a renewed interest in public libraries paired with increasing anti-capitalist sentiment has offered a respite in a financially uncertain time for many.

Thanks to BookTok and its celebrity ambassadors, reading is cool again. And independent book stores, bolstered by these digital communities, continue to push back against the industry giant.

LinkedIn and Adobe announce partnership to help creators protect their work against AI

Mashable - Sat, 04/26/2025 - 10:44

Adobe and LinkedIn are knocking out two birds with one stone, combining their identity verification and content validation tools into one shared system under a new "Verified on LinkedIn" program.

"Using Verified on LinkedIn, users will be able to use the verifications they've completed on LinkedIn to show who they are across the different online platforms they use, boosting trust, confidence, and credibility," said Oscar Rodriguez, vice president of trust at LinkedIn.

SEE ALSO: U.S. government agency sounds alarm on AI's toll on environment, humanity

Expanding on LinkedIn's current identity, workplace, and educational verification badges, the new partnership harnesses the professional social networking platform's free identity verification tool for Adobe creators looking to protect their work, helping them seamlessly verify who they are and automatically credit their work across both platforms.

When a creator who is verified on LinkedIn adds credentials through Adobe's content authenticity app, those credits will appear with a Verified on LinkedIn badge, tacked to the user's profile. And if that content is posted on LinkedIn, the platform will automatically tag it with the user's content credentials.

Adobe's content authenticity app, now in public beta, allows users to add content credentials to images and photos, part of the company's wider Content Authenticity Initiative. Other platforms, like TikTok, tech companies, and news organizations have joined the movement, including adding their own content credit systems and signing onto the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a nonprofit-backed project facilitating content provenance in the age of AI.

LinkedIn's badge can also be applied to TrustRadius, G2 and UserTesting, the company explained, as it encourages other companies to similarly integrate its free verification tool.
