Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas: What Musk says caused the blast

Mashable - Wed, 01/01/2025 - 17:33

A Tesla Cybertruck pulled up to the glass entrance doors of Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on New Year's Day, began emitting smoke and then exploded, according to authorities.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said in a media briefing that one individual in the car died and seven others sustained injuries. McMahill added that authorities were investigating "a number of leads."

He also acknowledged the alleged terror attack in New Orleans early on New Year's Day, during which a driver rammed into a crowd, killing at least 10 people. Law enforcement later found suspected improvised explosive devices in the city.

McMahill said local authorities were searching Las Vegas for any "secondary devices," adding that "...there does not appear to be any further threat to our community here, now."

Tweet may have been deleted What caused the Cybertruck to explode?

The cause of the Cybertruck's explosion outside of the Trump hotel was not immediately confirmed by authorities.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said the explosion was caused by "fireworks and/or a bomb in the bed of the rented cybertruck" in an X post Wednesday. Earlier, Musk posted on X that the "whole senior Tesla team" was investigating the matter.

Tweet may have been deleted

"We’ve never seen anything like this," he wrote.

Musk is a close adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, as well as one of his biggest donors. Musk gave at least $277 million to Trump and other Republicans during the 2024 election cycle, according to The Washington Post.

The Cybertruck has been plagued by recalls this year. In December, 700,000 Cybertrucks were affected by a recall related to a tire pressure warning light. The problem could cause users to unknowingly drive on low-pressure tires. Other recall notices involved glitches with the windshield wiper, rearview display, and accelerator pedal.

YouTuber Marques Brownlee explains his part in the alleged Honey scam

Mashable - Wed, 01/01/2025 - 14:32

Recently, YouTuber MegaLag published a 23-minute video with serious allegations against Honey, a free browser extension claiming to offer online shoppers the best coupon codes for their purchases. Honey, a subsidiary of PayPal, also worked extensively with influencers and creators, sponsoring and running ads alongside their content.

"I hate to break it to you, but your favorite influencers sold you a lie," said MegaLag. "Honey is a scam."

MegaLag's accusations included claims that Honey took for itself affiliate revenue meant for influencers who promoted certain products and that it had agreements with retailers to apply the discount codes they preferred. If true, this meant that both the influencers and online shoppers who trusted Honey were being duped.

SEE ALSO: Get ready for these scams in 2025

MegaLag's video, which has more than 14 million views as of January 1, prompted praise from viewers for the investigation as well as shock over Honey's alleged tactics. Now YouTuber Marques Brownlee, who partnered with Honey in the past, has his own video explaining the controversy.

"Obviously, if I had known any of this, I never would've worked with Honey," Brownlee said.

On December 29, lawyers representing content creators who partnered with Honey filed a class-action lawsuit against PayPal, claiming damages in excess of $5 million. Brownlee was not named as a plaintiff.

A spokesperson for PayPal noted Honey's benefits in a statement to Law.com, which reported on the lawsuit.

"Honey is free to use and provides millions of shoppers with additional savings on their purchases whenever possible," the spokesperson told Law.com. "Honey helps merchants reduce cart abandonment and comparison shopping while increasing sales conversion. Honey follows industry rules and practices, including last click attribution."

Every single letter in the grid will be part of an answer. There's always a theme linking every solution, along with the "spangram," a special, word or phrase that sums up that day's theme, and spans the entire grid horizontally or vertically.

The best dating apps for men in 2025 let you swipe less and date more

Mashable - Wed, 01/01/2025 - 05:00

UPDATE: Jan. 1, 2025, 5:00 a.m. EST This story has been updated with our latest recommendations.

A lot of guys have a love-hate relationship with the apps, but what's the alternative?

Sure, even the best dating apps for men can be a pain, yet meeting someone organically can feel nearly impossible. Between work and trying to maintain some semblance of a social life, who has the time to actually meet people? That's the promise of online dating.

The apps promise to deliver an unlimited number of meet-cutes right to your phone — no serendipity required. Some dating apps also use in-depth questionnaires and research-backed matching algorithms to connect you with a curated selection of singles. This means less time swiping and more time on dates with actual potential.

Do dating apps really work?

Look, we get it — a lot of guys are burned out on the apps.

Dating as a man in the 21st century is tough. It's not just the pressure to make the first move or the fear of rejection if you do — it's the endless swiping through fake profiles, AI-generated thirst traps, bots posing as potential matches, and the relentless Instagram models trying to lure you into their OnlyFans scam. Men also face matches with impossibly high expectations. (Have you heard of the 6-6-6 rule? Believers only date men who are six feet tall, have a six-figure income, and a six-pack of abs.)

SEE ALSO: The uncomfortable truth behind the lavender marriage trend

Despite these challenges (and the very long list of others we didn't mention), there are still plenty of real people out there looking for love, just like you. It's just a matter of finding the best dating apps and putting in the effort to weed out the fakes and the flakes.

Don't get discouraged — plenty of men and women are looking for love, friendship, and lust online. Credit: Zain Awais / Mashable

We're not going to sugarcoat it and say everyone finds love on their first swipe (or even their first app). But real men and women are finding connections online every day. One 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that one in 10 partnered adults met their significant other through online dating. The numbers are even higher for young people and the LGBTQ+ community.

When asked about their experiences with dating apps, 53 percent of users said they had a positive experience, with 14 percent rating it as "very positive." And there's more good news — 57 percent of guys reported positive experiences and results compared to 48 percent of women.

SEE ALSO: The dating app glossary: The A to Z of terms you need to know The best dating apps for guys who know what they want

This guide is your cheat sheet to the best dating apps for men in 2025. We've done the research and found the apps that are actually worth your time. Whether you're looking for something casual, something serious, or something free, we have a dating app to recommend

Pro tip: Don't be afraid to experiment. Try out a few different apps and see what works for you. And most importantly, don't get discouraged! Sometimes, the occasional bad date or disappointing flirtation is just the price you pay to meet the match of a lifetime.
