Are you scared to fly? The internet is, too.

Mashable - 2 hours 28 min ago

It seems like there's been a new air-travel incident every day under President Donald Trump's new administration.

Most notably, last month, a U.S. Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines flight near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, killing 67 people. It was the first fatal crash of a U.S. airliner in some 16 years. On Monday, a Delta flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport flipped as it landed in Toronto. There was the deadly high-profile crash of a medical jet in Philly, a fatal wreck in Alaska, and, just today, a fatal plane collision in Arizona.

Good American Family trailer: Ellen Pompeo stars in Natalia Grace series

Mashable - 3 hours 3 sec ago

From Woman of the Hour to Apple Cider Vinegar, movies and TV shows based on true crime stories have become a staple of the entertainment landscape, for better or for worse. Hulu's upcoming Good American Family is yet another addition to the genre, dramatizing the true story of Natalia Grace.

Good American Family introduces us to Kristine and Michael Barnett (Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass). The two adopt Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism. In the trailer above, Kristine becomes unnerved by Natalia Grace's behavior and soon raises questions about her true age.

This story has already been the subject of the documentary series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which examined Natalia Grace's time with multiple families and the abuse she faced there. How will Good American Family tackle these tricky themes? According to Hulu, the series is "told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma."

Good American Family premieres March 19 on Hulu.

Avowed: Best backgrounds and how they link to starting class

Mashable - 4 hours 14 min ago

Everyone on all of my social feeds is going wild for Avowed, the new open-world RPG from Obsidian, the folks behind Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds. A lot of people playing a fairly hardcore RPG means a lot of people having anxiety over character creation, though, so allow me to help.

When you start up a new game in Avowed, you're given some choices that seem extremely meaningful, and thus, are kind of scary to make. Specifically, you choose a fictional background for your character, which confers role-playing bonuses, starting stats, and even affects which weapon you start the game with. Sounds important, right?

Well, the good news is that your starting background doesn't matter that much in Avowed. That needs to be said and emphasized as much as possible before we get into what you get from each background. You can choose any background and still have the experience with Avowed that you want to have. Here's how it all works.

SEE ALSO: 'Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii' review: A nautical delight How backgrounds in Avowed work

When you create a character in Avowed, you're given a choice between five backgrounds:

  • Court Augur

  • Arcane Scholar

  • Vanguard Scout

  • Noble Scion

  • War Hero

Each of these backgrounds gives you a few sentences of backstory to work with, but that's not all. Every background has a default set of stats spread across the six primary attributes you'll level up in Avowed: Constitution, Might, Intellect, Dexterity, Perception, and Resolve. On top of that, your selected background dictates what weapon you start the game with in the tutorial zone.

There are a couple of crucial things to note before we move on. First, the starting stats for each background are merely suggestions; like any old-school RPG, you can fiddle with these during character creation as you see fit, so you're not locked into your background's default statistical profile. Second, the point about backgrounds dictating your starting weapon is only a concern during the 45-minute tutorial sequence. After that, you can use whatever weapons and wear whatever armor you want.

SEE ALSO: The best 'Starfield' traits and background to pick for your new character

Once Avowed properly gets started, you have total freedom over how you allocate skill points and approach combat. Your background doesn't necessarily have anything to do with that, unless you want it to for role-playing reasons. Role-playing should be your primary motivator for picking a background, because the most meaningful thing it gets you over the course of a full playthrough is occasional an dialogue choice you wouldn't get if you chose another background.

What each background in Avowed gets you

With all of that in mind, let's talk about which background is right for you. Again, this is primarily a role-playing choice, so I can't tell you what to choose, exactly. But I can at least lay out what each background does and give some broad recommendations.

Court Augur

Is your favorite Lord of the Rings character Grima Wormtongue? Court Augur might be the background for you. The backstory here is that you're a supernaturally perceptive sort who wound up as the emperor's personal mystic, with a penchant for influencing matters from the shadows. Your starting weapon will be a mace, so I hope you enjoy bashing dudes in the head.

Court Augurs get small bonuses to Perception, Dexterity, Intellect, and Resolve. If you stick to those attributes, your character will be best suited for agile, ranged confrontations rather than brute force. Speaking from personal experience, that's kind of a tough way to play Avowed because you can die rather easily, but it's a lot of fun, too.

Arcane Scholar

Arcane Scholar is probably the easiest background to explain: you're a nerd. This is the background I chose because it gives you a lot of dialogue options where you get to be a know-it-all egghead about basically anything. Arcane Scholars start with daggers.

Statistically, an Arcane Scholar starts with bonuses to Might, Perception, Dexterity, Intellect, and Resolve. It's a pretty well-rounded background, and might be my personal recommendation if you simply can't make a choice on your own. You can turn that statistical profile into basically any style of play.

Vanguard Scout

Do you tire of court intrigue and just wish you could hang out in the woods instead? Vanguard Scout might be the background for you. As the emperor's personal hunter and tracker, nothing will get past your keen senses of perception. Vanguard Scouts start with axes.

If you go this route, you'll get small bonuses to all six base attributes, but mostly Constitution, Dexterity, and Perception. Vanguard Scouts are survivable and smart, in other words.

Noble Scion

Do you live for court intrigue? Allow me to introduce you to Noble Scion, the rich kid starting background in Avowed. Noble Scions start with swords in the tutorial area.

This is another background that gets stat points in all six attributes to start, but the main points of emphasis are Might, Constitution, Dexterity, and Perception. You'll have a little bit of brawn to go along with your brains, making this a pretty good starting background for any type of player, as well.

War Hero

Last but not least, War Hero is exactly what you think it is. You're an elite spearman in service of the emperor, with a distinguished record of battlefield successes. Obviously, your starting weapon will be a spear.

War Heroes get big bonuses right away to Resolve, Might and Constitution, so this is definitely the background for aggressive, in-your-face fighters who don't want to bother as much with magic or ranged weapons.

Again, it needs to be said that none of these choices are necessarily binding when it comes to the Avowed gameplay experience. You can play however you want to play with any starting background. All it changes, in the aggregate, are dialogue choices. But if you've been struggling to make a choice, hopefully this helped.

Apple kills the home button with the new iPhone 16e

Mashable - 4 hours 22 min ago

Condolences to the final holdouts for Apple's iconic home button. The tech giant announced a new iPhone on Wednesday, the iPhone 16e, and with it comes the apparent demise of the home button.

As Mashable's Stan Schroeder wrote, the announcement "likely means the iPhone SE, which was widely expected for today, has been retired in favor of the iPhone 16e" — that shift, Schroeder noted, would be "a pretty huge deal." One reason why? The newly announced 16e, unlike the iPhone SE, does not have the home button.

SEE ALSO: Apple iPhone 16e is the new affordable Apple phone

Apple's cheaper SE line was the last bastion of home button aficionados. The 16e, while also a relatively budget option, falls in line with the rest of Apple's iPhone lineup by swapping out the button for a full-screen experience.

The new iPhone 16e promises a large display, excellent battery life, and the ability to use Apple Intelligence, among other features.

All those features aside, folks online have already begun paying tribute to the deceased home button.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: What are the differences?

Mashable - 4 hours 22 min ago

Apple’s latest flagship duo is here, and you’re faced with a classic dilemma: Do you splurge on the iPhone 16, or is the more budget-friendly iPhone 16e good enough?

Sure, they share some DNA, but make no mistake — these two devices have key differences that could make or break your decision. We’re talking price, design, display tech, battery life, and, of course, camera prowess (because let’s be real, that’s what you really care about).

SEE ALSO: Here's when you can preorder the new Apple iPhone 16e

At $599, the iPhone 16e is the budget-friendly model the people have clamored for, while the iPhone 16 commands a starting price tag of $799. That extra $200 gets you some decent upgrades (mostly, the camera control button) — but are they actually worth it?

Let’s break it all down and see which iPhone truly earns its keep.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Price

At a starting price of $799, the iPhone 16 comes with the following specs:

  • 8GB RAM

  • 128GB of storage

  • A18 chip w/ 5-core GPU

  • 6.1-inch display

  • Camera Control button

  • Action button from last year's 15 Pro models

Naturally, if you’re willing to shell out more cash, you can bump up the storage — but be prepared to drop $1,099 for 512GB. At that price, you might as well go for the iPhone 16 Plus and call it a day.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16e packs nearly the same internals as the standard 16, just with fewer buttons. Here are the specs:

  • 8GB RAM

  • 128GB of storage

  • A18 chip w/ 4-core GPU

  • 6.1-inch display

  • Action Button

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Design

The most immediate difference between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 is the color selection. While both phones share the same aluminum-and-glass design and Super Retina XDR display, the 16e doesn’t get the same color palette as the 16. The latter comes in five colors:

  • Ultramarine

  • Teal

  • Pink

  • White

  • Black

The 16e, however, is limited to just black and white. If color variety matters, that’s something to keep in mind.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Display

When it comes to displays, the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 are nearly identical — both rock a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with a crisp 460 ppi resolution and the usual Apple perks like True Tone, Wide Color (P3), and Haptic Touch. There's also one less camera on the 16e, but more on that later.

The differences do start to show if you dig a little deeper.

The 16e tops out at 800 nits brightness and 1200 nits HDR, while the 16 cranks up to 1000 nits, 1600 nits HDR, and a blazing 2000 nits outdoors. The 16 also gets Dynamic Island, Apple’s interactive cutout, while the 16e sticks to the standard notch.

If you’re all about brightness, Dynamic Island, and better outdoor visibility, the 16 has the edge. Otherwise, it’s basically the same screen.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Cameras

When it comes to cameras, both the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 pack a 48MP main sensor with Apple’s latest imaging tech, but the 16 goes further with an extra Ultra Wide lens and some advanced photography features. If you just need a solid shooter, the 16e delivers. But if you want more zoom, wider shots, and computational photography perks, the 16 is the stronger pick.

iPhone 16e
  • 48MP main camera

  • 12MP 2x Telephoto

  • Digital zoom up to 10x

  • Standard Apple features like Burst mode, red-eye correction, and Live Photos

iPhone 16
  • 48MP main camera

  • 12MP 2x Telephoto

  • 12MP Ultra Wide

  • 2x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out (4x optical zoom range)

  • Digital zoom up to 10x

  • Next-gen Portrait mode with Focus and Depth Control

  • Spatial photos, Macro photography, and lens correction (Ultra Wide)

The 16e holds its own with Apple’s latest camera tech, but the 16’s Ultra Wide lens, optical zoom, and extra computational features make it the better pick for photography enthusiasts.

iPhone 16E vs iPhone 16: Performance

When it comes to performance, the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 are nearly identical. Both are powered by Apple’s new A18 chip, featuring a 6-core CPU (2 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores) for snappy multitasking and power efficiency. The key difference is in the GPU—the 16 packs a 5-core GPU, while the 16e gets a 4-core GPU.

In real-world use, the performance gap between the two is negligible. Unless you’re pushing demanding graphics-intensive apps or games, you likely won’t notice the extra core. Apple claims the 16e is 40% faster than the iPhone SE 3, making it a significant upgrade for anyone coming from an older model.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Battery Life

Apple ran a video playback test on the iPhone 16e and it lasted 26 hours on a single charge.

Compare that to the iPhone 16, which lasted 22 hours on the same test.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Apple Intelligence

Both models come equipped with Apple Intelligence, bringing on-device AI capabilities, including Visual Intelligence for smarter image processing and real-time enhancements.

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 16: Which should you buy?

When it comes down to it, the biggest differences between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 are in the display and camera department. If you're looking for a budget-friendly iPhone, the 16e at $599 is the obvious choice. It delivers almost identical performance to the 16, with even longer battery life — though you’ll have to settle for fewer color options and a slightly lower-tier camera system (at least by iPhone standards).

Opens in a new window Credit: Apple iPhone 16 Pro Save up to $1,100 on iPhone 16 Pro Series at Walmart Get Deal

If a top-tier camera is a priority, the iPhone 16 is the better pick. Its dual-camera system includes Ultra Wide, plus the Camera Control button, which might be a big deal if you like having dedicated camera shortcuts. That extra $200 buys you better photographic versatility, and if you're already considering a storage upgrade, the pricing makes the decision even clearer. At $899 for 512GB, the 16e stops making sense — you might as well get the iPhone 16 instead.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to budget and how much you value camera quality. If saving $200 is worth giving up the Ultra Wide lens and a few premium perks, the 16e is a great deal. Personally, I think it’s the smarter buy — but hey, it’s your call.

You can pre-order Apple's iPhone 16e on Friday.

A few products have a major impact on everyday life, and a monitor is one of them. If you've been cruising along while working from home on a laptop, consider what upgrading to an external monitor could do. Not only does it give you an extra workspace, today's deal on a decently sized 27-inch monitor likely means you can use it for more than one window. Think of typing an email on your laptop while browsing an Excel sheet off to the left on the monitor while also keeping tabs on the Slack channel.

This Samsung monitor is also curved at 1,000R, which brings in another layer of ease and convenience. Samsung mentions that a study from Seoul National University found 1,000R to fit the human field of view best, producing less eye strain. Plus, Samsung used anti-flicker technology, which is also a friendlier experience for the eyes.

With a 75Hz refresh rate and a special Game Mode, this monitor can also be nice for casual gaming. Serious gamers might want something with more impressive specs, but this model will do just fine for many.

The slim design on the monitor paired with the included metal stand makes this a classy addition to your desk, without taking up much real estate.

If your work set-up is in need of an upgrade, consider the affordable 27-inch Samsung FHD Curved Monitor. Since it's on sale for just $137.95, your wallet, workflow, and eye health will be thankful for the investment.

Apple discontinues the iPhone SE, iPhone 14, and 14 Plus

Mashable - 4 hours 33 min ago

Today, Apple unveiled the brand new iPhone 16e. A new iPhone SE model had been long-rumored, as it had been so long since Apple refreshed the lineup. And at $599, the iPhone 16e is the most affordable of Apple's latest generation of smartphones.

However, with the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple has discontinued three older generation iPhone models that it was still selling. On Wednesday, Apple pulled the plug on the iPhone SE, iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

Apple usually discontinues an older generation model of iPhones when it introduces a brand new one, so this isn't unexpected. However, the iPhone 16e is a pretty big price jump from the previous SE model, from a $429 starting price to a $599 pricepoint. So, we're now looking at a minimum of $600 if you want an iPhone.

In addition, the iPhone SE was the last iPhone model to have a physical "Home" button. The iPhone 16e does not have one, so it seems the "Home" button has died along with the end of the old iPhone SE line.

SEE ALSO: Here's when you can preorder the new Apple iPhone 16e

Like the previous iPhone SE model, the iPhone 14 was launched in 2022. It has since been succeeded by both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. In fact, the iPhone 16e makes for a similar yet more powerful replacement for the iPhone 14 as well. So, the loss of the iPhone 14 isn't really a big deal.

However, for users wanting a larger iPhone, the iPhone 14 Plus served as the cheapest available option. There is no new similarly priced, similarly designed replacement. Now, users who simply want a bigger-sized iPhone will have to pay more for one.

Fiverr now lets gig workers train AI on their own work and sell it

Mashable - 5 hours 7 min ago

At a time when AI is already replacing gig workers, Fiverr says they're taking a different approach.

On Wednesday, the freelancing marketplace announced a program for users to train AI on their own body work and use it for future creative projects. The program, called the Personal AI Creation Model is part of a larger AI initiative called Fiverr Go, designed to let freelancers use AI's automation capabilities as a tool rather than be replaced by it.

"It’s a recognition that there’s a growing demand and cultural headwind behind supporting workers and creators amid the AI blitz," Brian Merchant, tech journalist and author of Luddite uprising saga Blood in the Machine, told Mashable in an X message.

"Instead of letting creators be exploited, Fiverr Go ensures they receive proper credit and compensation while giving them unprecedented tools to scale their work," said CEO Micha Kaufman in the announcement. "This is about making our freelancers irreplaceable, not obsolete."

A late 2024 study from the Harvard Business Review found a "steep decrease" in demand for coding and creative jobs following the introduction of ChatGPT and widescale release of AI image generating tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E. The gig economy is already precarious for workers since they face competition with each other and don't have the benefits and protections that come with full time jobs. Now gig workers are forced to compete with generative AI — often trained on their own work – which can code, write, create images, audio, and video, and doesn't need to sleep or eat.

It's a novel approach to adopting AI, especially since some companies have blatantly opted to lay off and replace workers with AI automation in other industries. Fiverr competitors like Upwork and PeoplePerHour have implemented AI assistants to connect customers with freelancers — something that Fiverr also launched on Wednesday. But as far as we know, none have directly embraced leveraging genAI for its creators.

"In theory, this seems to be the right way to engage AI, with workers in mind — as long as the terms are good, approved by workers and creators, and actually equitable," said Merchant. "You do worry that this is paying lip service to creators without delivering — as for example Adobe did with its program that offered artists compensation for letting their work be trained but really didn’t benefit them much."

Fiverr's AI Creation Model gives freelancers "control over their creative process and rights," allowing creators to "configure their models" and "set their prices" said the press release. The program will be available in categories including voiceover, songwriting, graphic design, copywriting, and marketing.

Customers can pay to download AI-generated works created by freelancers or "contact the freelancer of an AI-generated work as a starting point for a project, as an example or inspiration, and ask for a specific service," said a Fiverr spokesperson to TechCrunch.

But training AI on your own work and making money from its creations isn't free. AI Creation Models cost $25 a month and are initially limited to "top, vetted freelancers." The AI personal booking assistant is available as part of the Seller Plus Premium plan for $29 a month. So we'll let you crunch the numbers and decide whether it's worth it.

Our top pick: Eufy Omni C20 Opens in a new window Credit: Eufy Eufy Omni C20 hybrid robot vacuum and mop $399.99 at Amazon
$649.99 Save $250.00 Get Deal

A hybrid robot vacuum that mops and self-washes its mopping pads typically comes at a steep price (upwards of over $1,500). Even our top pick for a budget model — the Eufy X10 Pro Omni — is $700 on sale. That's what makes this deal on the Eufy Omni C20 so appealing. Back on sale for its Black Friday low of $399.99 (down 38% from $649.99), the Omni C20 has just slightly less powerful suction (7,000Pa vs. 8,000Pa) than the X10 Pro Omni and lacks small obstacle avoidance for cords and pet waste, but otherwise is a similar robot vacuum with a slim build and self-washing and drying mopping pads. Never needing to touch dirty and soggy pads is a game changer.
