Microsoft Office 2019 is on sale for A$47 — pay once and use it forever

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 15:54

TL;DR: Mashable readers can grab a lifetime device license for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more with a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2019 for Windows for A$47.

AU$363 Save AU$316 Get Deal

Your credit card is exhausted from all of today’s subscription fees. While you probably don’t want to cancel your favorite streaming apps or say goodbye to two-day shipping with Prime, you could swap your Microsoft 365 subscription for a Microsoft Office lifetime license.

Instead of spending A$11 monthly (or A$111 yearly), you can pay once and use the apps as much as you’d like. Through 30 March at the Mashable Shop, the Windows software suite is on sale for A$47 — an 86% discount.

What apps are included?

Microsoft Office 2019 isn’t the newest version available, but it’s the cheaper one for people who just need to use the apps and don’t care about what they look like inside. It also has a classic, timeless design and isn't weighted down by unnecessary AI features.

Here's a list of the apps you get:

  • Word

  • Excel

  • PowerPoint

  • Outlook

  • OneNote

  • Publisher

  • Access

Differences between Microsoft 365 and a lifetime license

This purchase is a no-brainer if you aren’t taking full advantage of Microsoft 365’s OneDrive storage, mobile app access, and cloud-based backups. Those just wanting the apps should be more than comfortable with a Microsoft Office download.

You might actually like this license more than the subscription. The apps are downloaded directly onto your PC instead of hosted on the cloud. While this does mean there are no built-in cloud backups, you don’t have to worry about the hassle of trying to work offline.

Plus, now that Microsoft added Copilot’s AI features to Microsoft 365, you might be looking for a way to escape them. Not everyone is crazy about having a virtual robot interfere with their work, and these classic apps won’t ever bug you about it.

The price drop on this lifetime license to Microsoft Office 2019 for Windows ends soon, so get your download for A$47 until 30 March at 11:59 p.m. PT.

23andMe is for sale — and so are 15 million peoples genetic records

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 14:58

After a brutal data breach and a wave of lawsuits, 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy — and now, the consumer genetics company is looking for a buyer. On the table are the business, the brand, and the DNA profiles of more than 15 million users.

The bankruptcy filing, submitted on Sunday, March 23, caps off months of turmoil following a major hack in October 2023. That breach exposed the personal and health-related genetic data of at least 7 million customers. The fallout was swift and far-reaching, resulting in more than "50 class action and state court lawsuits" alleging that 23andMe failed to adequately protect its users' most sensitive data.

SEE ALSO: 23andMe files for bankruptcy, CEO steps down

Now, in an attempt to streamline its legal mess, the company has entered Chapter 11 — a move that also opens the door for a potential sale. According to court filings, 23andMe is in debt to a mix of pharmaceutical firms, health insurers, AI startups like Aganitha AI and CoreWeave, marketing agencies, and pharmacies.

Meanwhile, California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a pointed warning to 23andMe users last Friday: don’t wait.

"Given 23andMe’s reported financial distress," he said in a statement, "I remind Californians to consider invoking their rights and directing 23andMe to delete their data and destroy any samples of genetic material held by the company."

How to delete 23andMe data

With 23andMe officially up for sale, there’s no telling who might end up owning the company — or what they’ll want with the genetic data of millions of users. Over the years, 23andMe has repeatedly claimed it takes data privacy seriously. But at that same time, it partnered with pharmaceutical companies and suffered a massive breach.

If you’re thinking about pulling the plug on your data before a potential buyer steps in, you can do that through the 23andMe app:

  • Head to the “23andMe Data” section

  • Tap “View,” then “23andMe Data”

  • Select “Permanently Delete Data”

One odd wrinkle: on the deletion page, 23andMe includes a Q&A that attempts to reassure users. It reads:

“If the company does change ownership in the future, your data will remain protected under the current 23andMe Privacy Policy unless you are presented with materially new terms, with appropriate advanced notice to review those material changes as required by law.”

In other words, your data stays private... until it doesn’t.

Did Google Maps delete your Timeline data? How to restore it.

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 14:35

Some users just had their timeline data wiped from Google Maps.

The company told Mashable in a statement that it "briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people." It's unclear how many users were affected.

"Nearly everyone with encrypted Timeline backups will be able to restore their data; unfortunately, those who did not have backups enabled will not be able to recover lost data," Google wrote in its statement. Timeline services have since been restored.

SEE ALSO: Google Maps is adding weather incident reporting

Timeline data is helpful if you want to, say, return to an old location from earlier this week but don't remember the address or want to take a similar route but don't remember the exact turns. As Google said, if you had your backup turned on, you'd be able to restore your data pretty easily, but it's turned off by default.

You'll need to make sure Google Maps is updated to the latest version. Then, navigate to your profile and click "Your Timeline." Then tap the cloud icon and choose backup, which will import your data.

If you didn't have your backup turned on, it looks like that data is gone forever — and Google won't be able to retrieve it for you.

Fitness influencers morning routine goes viral for all the wrong reasons

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 12:55

We regret to inform you that the hustle bros are at it again — this time, they’ve brought mouth tape and banana peels.

Over the weekend, the internet was captivated (read: deeply confused) by a resurfaced video from fitness influencer Ashton Hall, whose morning routine might be the most unhinged one to grace our feeds.

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

We’re talking full performance art levels of routine here — a six-hour odyssey that begins at 3:50 a.m. and ends at 9:30 a.m. and includes such highlights as mouth taping, icy face dunks (with very conspicuous bottled water product placement), shirtless push-ups, meditating, weird poses by the balcony, and — we cannot stress this enough — four minutes of hovering over the pool. The video, originally posted on February 7, is labeled "Day 191 of the morning routine that changed my life."

Hall, who boasts over 8 million Instagram followers, is no stranger to the hustle-core lifestyle content mill. His feed is a never-ending scroll of shirtless workouts, aggressively aestheticized morning routines, and the kind of unwavering discipline that makes you want to take a nap out of protest.

The reactions? Predictably savage. Social media has been lit up with memes, stitches, and general bewilderment. And it's not just the randos on the internet — pro sports teams and even Mr. Beast are having fun with it.

The Death Star looms large over Andor Season 2 trailer

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 12:32

While Andor Season 2's first trailer promised rocking Star Wars revolution, the season's second trailer takes a tenser, more foreboding approach.

SEE ALSO: 'Andor' creator on Lucasfilm censoring f-bomb: 'They were right.'

The biggest reason for that tension? The Death Star, which made a brief appearance in the end tag for Andor Season 1. Now, as the show draws ever closer to the events of Rogue One which was all about obtaining the plans to the Death Star — that fearsome Imperial weapon becomes an even bigger threat.

"It's a weapon. They're building a weapon," one character says in the trailer, which then cuts to Rogue One's Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) overseeing the nearly completed Death Star.

But Krennic and the rest of the Empire — including Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) and Dedra Meero (Denise Gough) — will face major opposition from the ever-growing Rebellion. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) is now fully in the fight, along with allies Bix Kaleen (Adria Arjona), Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), and Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly). How much will they sacrifice for revolution?

Andor Season 2 premieres Apr. 22 on Disney+.

New Android 16 beta update brings major feature to older Pixel phones

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 12:29

All Google Pixels can use the Fingerprint Unlock feature even when the screen is off, thanks to the imminent Android 16 update.

According to Android Authority, which spotted the update in Android 16 Beta 3, the off-screen Fingerprint Unlock method now works for Pixel 6 and newer — not just Pixel 9.

The ability to unlock Pixels by scanning your fingerprint on the screen debuted with the Pixel 6, but the display had to be on in order to activate the sensor underneath it. Google introduced Fingerprint Unlock while the display is off with Android 16 developer preview for the Pixel 9, the latest generation of its smartphone. But a new Android 16 beta update indicates this feature will be extended to all Pixels that have the Fingerprint Unlock sensor. That means presumably all versions of Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 versions as well, including Pixel "a" series, since the outlet tested it with the budget-friendly Pixel 6a and reported that it works with the Pixel 7.

If you have the Android 16 Beta 3 installed, you can try it out for yourself. Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. Within the Fingerprint Unlock setting, toggle on Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock. With this enabled, you'll be able to unlock your Pixel with a fingerprint even when the display is off. It's handy feature that feels like a more natural gesture by eliminating one less step to unlocking on your phone.

If you don't have the beta version of the Android 16, you won't have to wait long for the official release. According to the Android Developers Blog, Google expects to ship Android 16 in the second quarter of 2025, which is anytime between April and June of this year.

Moiraine channels extraordinary power in exclusive clip from The Wheel of Time Season 3, episode 5

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 12:00

The Wheel of Time Season 3, episode 4 introduced an incredibly powerful new object: the Sakarnen, a sa'angreal that serves as the female counterpart to the sword Callandor. (This is a change from Robert Jordan's original novels, where the Sakarnen can only be used by men.)

SEE ALSO: 'The Wheel of Time' cast on the most anticipated relationships of Season 3

In episode 4, Aes Sedai Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) found the Sakarnen in the city of Rhuidean, within Avendesora, the Tree of Life. Now, in an exclusive clip from Season 3, episode 5, we get to see the Sakarnen in action.

In the above clip, Moiraine channels with the Sakarnen for the first time, sending large swaths of the One Power soaring across the Aiel Waste. It's one of the most extraordinary displays of power we've witnessed on The Wheel of Time so far, but it seems like it comes with a price. Moiraine appears to be wrestling with the Sakarnen at times, almost collapsing into the arms of her Warder, Lan (Daniel Henney), once she's finished.

"What is that, Moiraine?" he asks.

"What did it feel like to you?" she asks, referencing their bond.

"Euphoric," Lan replies. But when prompted further, there's cause for concern. To him, the use of the Sakarnen also felt "like hunger and thirst, but deeper."

Will he and Moiraine pay an even steeper price for this kind of power?

The Wheel of Time Season 3 is now streaming on Prime Video, with a new episode every Thursday.

Right now, you can get two Blink Mini 2 security cams for just $37.99 on Amazon. That’s a 46% discount and $32 off the regular price of $69.99.

The Blink Mini 2 records 1080p HD video, detects motion, and sends real-time alerts to your phone if something triggers the camera. It also has two-way audio, so you can talk to visitors or scare off would-be intruders. Plus, they’re compatible with Amazon Alexa, so you can view the camera feed on an Echo Show or even have Alexa announce when motion is detected.

You’ll get a 30-day trial of the Blink Subscription Plan, but it’s not required — the cameras work just fine without a subscription.

Dimension 20 fans, heres your exclusive first look at the Fantasy High webcomic

Mashable - Mon, 03/24/2025 - 11:00

Calling all intrepid heroes! Dropout and WEBTOON have partnered to create a webcomic based on Dimension 20's Fantasy High, and we've got your exclusive first look at character art and select panels from upcoming episodes. Can I get a "hoot growl"?

Launching March 31 on WEBTOON, the 61-episode series will adapt Dimension 20's first ever actual play campaign, led by Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan. The shift to a webcomic is the latest in a series of big moves for the Dropout staple, including a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden back in January.

Part epic fantasy adventure, part John Hughes movie, Fantasy High follows six misfits during their freshman year at Aguefort Adventuring Academy. When Aguefort students begin to mysteriously disappear, these unlikely heroes are on the case, uncovering a sinister conspiracy and going on a coming-of-age journey at the same time.

The WEBTOON series is written by Derek V. Song, with storyboards by Alex Brennan-Dent, inks by Denaseey, backgrounds by StarPiper, colors by SZ, and lettering by Nisaa.

Here's your first look at Fantasy High's beloved Bad Kids in the upcoming Fantasy High webcomic.
