You probably know AMC as the home of The Walking Dead universe, but it actually has a lot more to offer than just post-apocalyptic zombies. The AMC Networks-owned streaming service, AMC+, is arguably one of the most slept on streamers around. And thanks to this AMC Black Friday deal, you can try it out without breaking the bank. The only catch: you have to be a Prime Video subscriber.

While there are no discounts on AMC+ as a standalone service, Prime Video members can score a pretty sweet deal on the streamer for Black Friday. Through Dec. 2, you can add a monthly subscription to AMC+ to your streaming arsenal for only $1.25 per month (with ads) or $2.25 per month (no ads) for two months. I've been covering Black Friday sales for nearly five years, and more importantly, I'm a tech journalist who's been passionately testing gadgets during the same time frame. As such, I bring expertise on two fronts: I know Black Friday like the back of my hand, and I’ve personally tested the products I’m recommending in this roundup.

I’ll also include links to our reviews for each product, so you can see for yourself that we at Mashable have had extensive hands-on experience with the gadgets we’re recommending.

Here’s something you should know about my ethos: I’d never recommend a product to readers that I wouldn’t personally buy for myself or a friend.

That being said, let's get into the Black Friday tech deals I'd recommend in a heartbeat.

Best Black Friday tech deals 2024

No piece of tech is perfect. While I’ll explain why I recommend the gadgets on this list, I’ll also point out any potential drawbacks that might give you pause. It’s always better to make an informed decision before committing to a purchase.

1. Oura Ring 3

Before testing the Oura Ring, I thought it was just going to be a less sophisticated version of a smartwatch. I didn't think that for one second that I'd opt for the Oura Ring over the Apple Watch, but my experience with it has blown me away. (Mostly because it lasts so much longer on a charge compared to my Apple Watch Series 9.)

I've tested the Oura Ring 4, and while it comes with cool upgrades, it's not that different from the Oura Ring 3. For example, the Oura Ring 4 doesn't bring any new sensors to the table (but Oura claims that the Ring 4's sensors are more accurate than ever.)

Both the Oura Ring 3 and Oura Ring 4 tracks the following: heart rate, sleep, blood-oxygen levels, cardiovascular age, cardio capacity, daytime stress, body clock and chronotype, and more.

Pros:

  • Its battery life is incredibly long; Oura claims it can deliver about 7 days of battery life, which is accurate.

  • Its AI advisor, available in the companion app, is a beta service that launched alongside Oura Ring 4. Many health trackers give you tons of data, but it's difficult to make sense of it. With the ChatGPT-like AI advisor, you can ask it questions like, "What does my data say about my sleeping habits and how can I improve my rest?"

  • The gold option is stunning, and I get compliments on it all the time.

  • You'll get a sizing kit upon purchase, so you don't have to worry about getting the wrong size.

Cons:

  • I've tested the Oura Ring on Android and iOS devices; I found that results and data took longer to populate on the former compared to the latter

  • I recommend the Oura Ring for iPhone users, but not Android owners

  • It requires a subscription fee of $6 month

  • It has the best charging case in the ring-wearable market; you can use it to give the Galaxy Ring an extra battery boost and it's excellent for travel

  • You don't need to purchase a subscription to use it

  • It pairs very well with Samsung phones; while wearing the Galaxy Ring, you can use the "double pinch" gesture, for example, to trigger the shutter button in the Camera app

Cons:

  • Not compatible with iOS

  • Only Samsung users get the full benefits of the Galaxy Ring

I've tested the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Series 10.

Apple wants you to believe these two smartwatches are significantly better than the Watch SE 2. But as someone who has tested all three, the feature gap between the SE 2 and the Series 9 and 10 isn't that wide.

Pros:

  • The Apple Watch SE 2's battery life is just an hour or two shorter than the Apple Watch Series 9

  • Save for the absence of an always-on display and a larger screen, the display quality difference between the SE 2 and Watch Series 9 is imperceptible

  • Great for smaller wrists and for those who prefer a "dainty" look

  • Stylish despite sporting advanced tech

  • Comfortable to wear

  • Supports calls, as well as photo and video capture

  • They can play music, and the audio quality is great

  • Many different styles to choose from

Cons:

  • Don't lose the case; it's difficult to repurchase one

  • Battery life could be better

If you have trouble with your AirPods falling out of your ears, the AirPods 4 is what you're looking for.

Pros:

  • Apple changed the design of the fourth-generation AirPods 4 so that they now fit most ears

  • AirPods 4 (with ANC) do a good job of cancelling out noise, like conversations, the rush of traffic, etc.

  • You can use head gestures, like nodding or shaking your head "no," to accept or deny calls

  • Music sounds crisp and honeyed

Cons:

  • You can't increase nor decrease volume on the AirPods 4 itself via touch controls

I'd also recommend the AirPods Pro 2, which come with a slew of updates that the AirPods 4 do not support, including hearing test capabilities and doubling as high-tech earplugs for concerts.

TikTok owner ByteDance sues intern for $1.1 million in damages for ‘sabotaging’ AI project

TikTok parent company ByteDance is going after a former intern for allegedly sabotaging an AI training project.

According to The South China Morning Post, ByteDance is seeking 8 million yuan (about $1.1 million) in damages and a public apology from ex-intern Tian Keyu. The case, which has already been accepted by Haidian District Court in Beijing, centers around accusations of Tian tampering with code related to an AI training project. ByteDance also owns AI chatbot Doubao, which is the company's answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Tian was fired in August because he "maliciously interfered with the model training tasks," according to a statement from ByteDance. In the same statement, ByteDance disputes rumors that the tampering involved 8,000 GPU cards and lost the company tens of millions of dollars, saying those claims are "seriously exaggerated." The company also said Tian claimed to be a part of the AI Lab, but he was really part of a separate commercial technology team.

ByteDance has been busy with its AI-focused projects. It has introduced several features for TikTok including, AI-generated digital avatars and AI tools for advertising. It also reportedly has a powerful web crawler called Bytespider that's gobbling up content on the internet for LLM training.

Meanwhile, the TikTok ban deadline is coming up in January, making its future in the U.S. uncertain. That said, President-elect Donald Trump, who is now on TikTok, said he wants to overturn the ban.

Bluesky now displays replies by hotness

Bluesky replies will now default to appear by "hotness" in a contentious update to the social media platform.

Announced this week as part of the app's 1.95 software update, post replies will now appear as "hot replies first", which is the new default setting. "With this release, you can now display replies by “hotness,” which weights liked replies that are more recent more heavily," the app's official Bluesky account posted.

Post reply settings also include sorting by oldest or newest replies, most liked, or a random setting labelled "Poster's roulette".

But while Bluesky's announcement was delivered with excitement, a lot of users aren't happy with the addition, especially as it's now the default setting. Users protested the act of rewarding "clout farmers" and lamented this similarity to platforms like X — where many Bluesky users have fled from.

"Prioritising 'popular' like this is one of the main reasons all the other social media sites became awful and encourages shitty behaviour," wrote Phonogram author and illustrator Jamie McKelvie.

12. Dead Calm

If you thought you were safe from deranged killers on a yacht in the middle of the ocean, you haven't watched Dead Calm. Directed by Phillip Noyce and produced by Mad Max's George Miller, the film channels a little Cape Fear in the big blue. Sam Neill and Nicole Kidman are grieving parents traumatised from their son's death, and taking some time to heal on their boat. But when a man (Billy Zane) washes up from a nearby sinking ship, they're not ready for the hell he's about to inflict on them. Three boats become the stage for this thriller-horror, as Kidman gives a really strong performance early in her career, despite her character being forced to do whatever she can to survive. 11. Nutcrackers

After rebooting Halloween with a hard-hitting trilogy, director David Gordon Green has pivoted to a heartfelt, family-friendly movie with Nutcrackers. Ben Stiller stars as a metropolitan real-estate-developer, who's lost touch with his rural sister and her free-spirited kids. But when a car collision leaves his nephews orphaned, it's up to Uncle Michael to fill the void.

Green found inspiration for the movie in four charismatic siblings he knew in his personal life. This led to him building an Uncle Buck premise around real-life brothers Homer, Ulysses, Atlas Janson, and Arlo Janson. But as I warned out of Nutcrackers TIFF premiere, the feel-good movie Green aspires to make never really comes together. "Sure, the Janson boys are winsome," I wrote, "but there are only so many times the same poop joke works. Perhaps Green didn't allow himself the distance to find the path in this terrain that fascinated him, leaving his audience lost in the ideas or intentions that go nowhere." — Kristy Puchko, Entertainment Editor

This time around, Lohan and co-star Ian Harding play exes forced to spend Christmas in the same house, as their current partners are siblings. A dating show that isn't obsessed with youth (they're rare), The Later Daters is Netflix's new series focused on baby boomers looking for relationships later in life. How to Not Die Alone author and behavioral scientist Logan Ury acts as a dating coach in the series, especially focusing on online etiquette. The series is produced by Michelle Obama with Higher Ground, with Queer Eye showrunner Jennifer Lane and Love on the Spectrum's Cian O’Clery also producing. — S.C.

8. Sweethearts

Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga star in the anti-rom com Sweethearts, about two college students (and years-long besties) who make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts over Thanksgiving break. Of course, there are several roadblocks along the way, including an absinthe soirée, an eagle-eyed bar bouncer, and Jamie (Shipka) and Ben's (Hiraga) many emotional hangups, both about their romantic relationships and their relationship to one another.

From here, the stage is set for a classic "will they won't they" trope, but Sweethearts may still surprise you with the evolution of its core friendship. Following an hour and a half of fairly raunchy hijinks (many missing the mark), Sweetheart sobers up for a surprisingly mature ending that lets Jamie and Ben grow in new and exciting directions. A subplot involving their best friend Palmer (comedian Caleb Hearon) getting to know the queer community in their small Ohio town also offers a sweet distraction from the emotional stress of the breakup pact. — B.E.

It's the show that redefined how food shows are shot, and it'll have you staring blankly at your bank account willing it to get you a table at these joints. Cue Vivaldi! — S.C.

6. Beatles '64

If you're a Beatles fiend who watched Peter Jackson's eight-hour The Beatles: Get Back documentary, there's a new treat for you. 5. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary

The wise man has the power to watch this HBO documentary on the perfectly harmonised, smooth sailing West Coast soft rock that defined the '70s and '80s. Created by Bill Simmons, Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary will take you on a voyage through the genre dubbed "yacht rock" by the absolutely must-watch webseries in 2005. — S.C.

4. Get Millie Black

Directed by Tanya Hamilton and written by Booker Prize winner Marlon James, British series Get Millie Black has arrived on Max. It's a crime thriller about a Scotland Yard detective forced to leave the service and return to Jamaica. A Channel 4/HBO co-production, the series stars Tamara Lawrance in the titular role as Millie-Jean Black, whose distance from her detective post doesn't mean she's left her life of crime investigation behind. — S.C.

3. The Madness

Colman Domingo leads this Netflix thriller about a man fighting for innocence after he finds a white supremacist murdered. Muncie is forced on the run while he tries to clear his name, but the conspiracy runs deep, with allies few and far between. Created by The Laramie Project writer Stephen Belber with Justified's VJ Boyd, the limited series was directed by Brother's Clement Virgo. — S.C.

2. Robot Dreams

Great news for Hulu users, Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams has hit the platform. Based on Sara Varon's graphic novel, this dialogue-free, animated film is a must-watch, a tale of friendship and loneliness through the eyes of a dog and his robot buddy. In my review, I wrote of Robot Dreams, "A simply beautiful use of animation, music, and sound to explore isolation and interconnectedness, Robot Dreams will be one of the more impactful, touching films you see this year — all without saying a word." — S.C.

1. Conclave

Despite having only just released in cinemas, Conclave is now available through video on demand. Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Isabella Rossellini, and John Lithgow lead this superb Vatican-set political drama. The secretive selection of a new pope lies at the core of director Edward Berger's thriller, based on Robert Harris' 2016 novel, and the film features some of the best performances you'll see all year.

Mashable's Entertainment Editor, Kristy Puchko, praised the film in her review as a "sophisticated and sharply enthralling thriller," writing, "This is a movie that understands the complications of Catholicism, where reason collides with belief and human nature with divinity." — S.C.

Tesla API pricing could destroy many third party apps

Tesla's API pricing is live, and the news is not good for third party app developers.

On Thursday, the company revealed third party API pricing, which varies related to the type of data the app requires. Streaming vehicle signals to the app, for example, cost $1 per 150,000 signals; performing commands on a Tesla device costs $1 per 1,000 requests; polling a limited set of data from the vehicle costs $1 per 500 requests, and waking up the vehicle from sleep costs $1 per 50 requests.

Tesla got an official API (application programming interface) in October 2023 after years of developers having to rely on an unofficial API. But access was free — until now.

This can be hard to put into perspective if you're a regular user, but for some third-party app developers, these prices are a deal breaker. On Reddit (via Electrek), the developer of popular third-party app Tessie said it would cost them $60 million per year to keep operating at current API pricing rates.

Tessie is an app that offers a comprehensive set of information on your Tesla car, such as real-world range, battery health, and charging times. It also allows the user to perform certain commands on the car. According to the developer, Tessie makes an API call to a car every 30 seconds when the car is "awake and busy."

"Assuming someone leaves Sentry on (common) and the car stays busy, and there are 43,829 minutes in a month, that's 87,658 calls per month. At $1 per 500 requests, that's $175 for one month for one vehicle - not counting wakes or commands. In the worst case, where all vehicles are subscribed and all vehicles have Sentry on, it's actually 470,000 vehicles * $175 = $82,250,000 per month or $987,000,000 per year."

Tessie is a paid app, but these costs are obviously unsustainable. The Tessie developer said they plan to circumvent this by using "direct car communication over IP and BLE," which will require a "wild amount of effort."

Tyler Corsair, founder of another popular Tesla app Teslascope, also voiced his opinion in the same Reddit thread. "The current rates will put the majority (if not all) third-party services, including my own. To provide the same frequency of data would cost Teslascope 7.5x its monthly revenue."

And the developer of another third party app, Teslemetry, said it would cost him "25x revenue at this point."

Tesla does not provide a way for the media to send inquiries, so we can't ask about the reasoning behind these rates. If nothing changes, however, it appears that a lot of third-party apps are going out of business.

With this move, Tesla appears to be going the same path as X (ex-Twitter), and Reddit, which put a lot of developers out of business when they drastically increased API pricing for third party apps.
